NOVEMBER

2025

Saluting our Military Families!

A month dedicated to honoring all those who served and to the family members who supported those service members.

On November 11th, our nation recognizes the service and dedication of military veterans on Veterans Day. Originally called Armistice Day, after the armistice signed by the allies and Germany that signaled the end of World War I, the name was changed in 1954 to include veterans from all wars, both living and deceased.

The month of November is also about celebrating military families Originally a single day holiday, in 1996, the Armed Services succeeded in expanding November into a month-long observance of “Military Families Month” via presidential approval. Every year since, the government has declared the month as a National observance through a signed proclamation and it is a wonderful opportunity to recognize both your dedication and service to our country.

Liberty Military Housing would like to thank all of our military families for your steadfast support as you have faced the special challenges of long deployments, family separations, and frequent relocations with great courage and resolve. Your selfless dedication, which has directly contributed to the mission readiness of our service members, is a source of inspiration and deep gratitude.

How Can We Help?

Do you have a needed repair, a suggestion, or a concern? Liberty Military housing is committed to enriching the lives of military families through providing homes and vibrant communities Your feedback is an important piece in helping us accomplish this goal, and we want to ensure we provide you with an avenue to initially address your needed repair, suggestion, or concern and the process to escalate it, should that be necessary. The Sharing Shelf for Household Chemicals

Moving is a fact of military life When Permanent Change of Station (PCS) orders arrive, many families are left with half-full paint cans, extra bottles of cleaner, or garden supplies that cannot be packed and shipped These items often end up in the trash Still, a smarter, safer, and more cost-effective solution is available right here on Joint Base Lewis-McChord: the Household Hazardous Waste Sharing Shelf, located at Building 9679 on Rainier Drive.

Why Reuse Matters

Household chemicals cannot be thrown in the garbage or poured down the drain They are considered hazardous waste, which means JBLM must pay for proper disposal Every gallon of paint, jug of antifreeze, or container of cleaner that is discarded becomes a costly to dispose of

By reusing and recycling these products, we:

Save money for families. Picking up free items from the Sharing Shelf means families don't have to purchase brand-new products A gallon of touch-up paint or a bottle of bleach be available free of charge

Save money for the base. Every item that is reused is one less item JBLM must pay to dispose of This helps keep costs down and resources available for other important programs

Protect the environment Proper reuse prevents toxic materials from entering landfills, storm drains, and waterways It is a win for the community and for the natural environment we all share

How It Works

The process is simple:

1 Drop Off: Bring unused or partially used household chemicals to Building 9679 Items accepted include motor oil, batteries, propane, antifreeze, light bulbs, household cleaners, and disinfectants

2 Pick Up: Browse the shelves to see what is available You might pick up leftover fertilizer or a can of touchup paint at no cost

3 Sign In: A quick sign-in at the front desk and a brief description of what is being dropped off or picked up is all that is required

The Sharing Shelf is open Monday through Thursday from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m For questions, call 253-967-4786.

PCS Perks: Do Not Pack It, Share It

If you are preparing for a PCS, this program can save you time, effort, and money Moving companies will not ship hazardous materials, and paying for disposal off-post can be expensive Instead, bring your extra materials to the Sharing Shelf Not only will you avoid unnecessary costs, but you will also help another family who may need exactly what you are leaving behind

A Community Effort

The Sharing Shelf works best when the community takes part. Whether you are dropping off items you no longer need or picking up supplies for your home, you are contributing to a cycle that reduces waste, saves money, and supports JBLM families. So, the next time you are cleaning out the garage, preparing for a move, or simply looking to save money, stop by Building 9679. You may be surprised at what you find, and you will know that every can, bottle, and bulb you share makes a real difference.
