A WORD FROM OUR WEST ARMY PARTNERS
Green Your Holidays: Celebrate with Purpose, Not Waste
By: Katherine Dickerson, DPW Environmental, AGEISS Inc.
The holiday season is a time of joy and generosity, but it can also be a season of excess From packaging waste to increased energy use, the environmental footprint of the holidays adds up quickly. This year, take small steps toward a greener celebration and help keep our installation mission ready by conserving energy and reducing disposal costs.
Decorate with Purpose
Start with the decorations you already have before purchasing new ones. If you need more, check out the Fort Lewis Thrift Shop or McChord Thrift Shop for affordable, pre-loved holiday treasures. For natural touches, collect pinecones, evergreen branches, and acorns for wreaths or centerpieces, and add dried citrus or cinnamon sticks for both scent and beauty. When buying lights, choose LED options They use up to 75% less energy and last up to 25 times longer than traditional bulbs
Give Thoughtfully
Thoughtful giving starts with mindful planning. Choose gifts made with environmentally responsible materials, such as items in recyclable packaging or choose options for less packaging when ordering online Consider gifts that don’t require wrapping, like experiences, lessons, or homemade meals. When wrapping is needed, use creative and recyclable options such as newspapers, maps, or reusable fabric instead of non-recyclable glossy paper.
Compost Christmas Trees and Pumpkins
After the festivities, reduce waste by bringing your Christmas trees and leftover fall pumpkins to Earthworks Composting Center. Real trees must be free of lights, tinsel, ornaments, and flocking. Pumpkins should be clean, carved, and seedless, with no glitter, paint, or other inorganic decorations These materials will be composted into rich soil instead of going to waste While you’re there, ask about self-loading compost to prep your spring garden! Need directions? Call (253)967-3803. Hours 0700-1530.
By rethinking how we decorate, give, and dispose, we can reduce waste, conserve energy, save money, and ensure our installation remains mission ready for years to come.

Announcement Date:
Fats, Oil & Grease (FOG)
American Water JBLM
Military Services Group
November 6th, 2024
AmericanWaterJBLM Military Services Group regulates the introduction of Fats, Oils and Grease (FOG)intotheJLBM sanitary sewer collection system Many of these products are introduced into the systemthroughresidential households and commercial kitchens that do not follow simple steps and practicestoeliminate them from the system Please be aware of the effective actions you, as a residentand/orbusiness, should follow regarding FOG Also remember rags wipes, even those that are labeledasflushable, can clog your sewer pipes The actions you take today will prevent clogged sewerlinesandsanitary sewer overflows tomorrow.

FollowtheseDO’s and DON’Ts for FOG-free sewer pipes You’re part of the SOLUTION to prevent FOGclogs!
DO DON’T
Pour cooled FOG into their original container or another sealable container like a soup can Once solidified, place the container in the trash. If you have a lot of FOG, mix it with kitty litter and dispose of it in a trash bag Examples: meat fats, lard, cooking oil, shortening, butter and margarine
Scrape all fatty and greasy food scraps into the trash before washing your dishes Any excess grease can be absorbed with a paper towel and tossed into the garbage Examples: baking goods, dairy products, food scraps, Sauces.
Use a sink strainer while rinsing dishes to catch any remaining fatty food items or other trimmings
Put FOG down the drain
Use hot water and soap to “dissolve” FOG and wash it down the drain The FOG will harden when cooled
Use your garbage disposal to wash fatty and greasy food scraps away Meat scraps and other fatty items tossed down the drain can clog sewer pipes.
Put eggshells down your drain or disposal
The shells mix with FOG to create a plasterlike substance that blocks sewer pipes
We are all affected by how we care for our environment. Being good environmental stewards and preventing sewer overflows helps every person to live in a safer and healthier area. **All commercial kitchens and large FOG producers (restaurants, prisons, schools, daycares, dining halls. etc.) are required to have and maintain an adequate grease removal system. This may include a large volume grease interceptor, under sink grease trap, containment of grease for pickup, or a combination of all these approaches.
We thank you for your continued support in reducing the strain on our valuable infrastructure

SAVE YOUR PIPES
NEVER FLUSH WIPES
(even if they say they’re flushable)!
AVOID COSTLY CLOGS

Many sewer blockages occur between the house or business and the utility’s sewer main, where the property owner is responsible for correcting the problem. Avoiding blockages could mean avoiding an unnecessary plumbing bill.
Unlike toilet paper, many hygiene products and wipes don’t break down once they are flushed Rags and wipes, even those that are labeled as flushable, can clog your sewer pipes and leave you with a costly repair bill On a larger scale, when these products make their way into the public sewer system, they can collect together and cause blockages in the sewer mains, get tangled up in pump equipment and result in service problems So, instead of flushing these items down the drain, throw them in the trash
BOTTOM LINE
These products can clog your sewer pipes and leave you with a costly repair bill. Instead of washing these items down the drain, throw them in the trash.
