Superintendent’s Corner While I have worked for Lewis for over 38 years, my history with the company goes even further back. I remember in junior high, riding with my father in his Chevy truck with the Lease Crutcher Kisse logo on the side to check on the Sea-Tac Airport parking garage project. When I started working for Lewis in 1985 as a green-as-the-hills apprentice, the company looked very different. Our main office was in Redmond, and our yard was a small pole building behind the office. I remember playing volleyball in the area between the office and the yard. As a foreman in Special Projects, I remember being handed a pager and told to keep a roll of quarters on hand to return calls. Then came cell phones and, eventually, the smartphones we use today. When Lewis considered giving superintendents laptops, I was one of five people picked for a test run because I was already using my own. I had gotten IT to download Sure Trak so I could play with my schedule. I won’t get into the stories on safety through the beginning of my career, but suffice it to say, our safety transformation is easily one of the best changes I have witnessed. Personally, I don’t like change. But when I look back on all the changes I have gone through during my years with Lewis, I realize that change can be good and necessary. Lewis is not the company I started with all those years ago, but it is still the only company I want to work for. So, when change comes your way, remember that Lewis is trying to improve, which is good for all of us. Brett Wines Superintendent, Seattle
