WILSON RUNNING

WILD Life and football have few constants. Fortunately for Austin Peay, DeAngelo Wilson spending 2019 cutting opposing secondaries into ribbons is one of them. It’s not so much that Wilson has made the most of his opportunities through the first few weeks of Austin Peay’s 2019 campaign, although the way he’s caught every pass thrown in his general direction has opposing coaches wondering if the ban on Stickum has been lifted. A good rule of thumb for Austin Peay quarterbacks: if you get in trouble, find Wilson. Often as not in 2019, he’s been the guy running wide open across the middle, leaving a trail of would-be defenders in his wake. Wilson was the sure-handed safety valve in the slot a year ago, the reliable second option in the event DJ Montgomery was triple-covered. But with Montgomery gone pro, there’s been a void to fill as Austin Peay’s primary target. And through four games, it’s been Wilson’s slot action—finding the soft spots in the defense and then letting his athleticism do the rest of the work—that has kept the chains moving for the Govs.

BY COLBY WILSON

By Wilson’s own admission, the ball is spreading around in the Governor passing attack this season, and the numbers back that up as first Jeremiah Oatsvall and now JaVaughn Craig work to keep everyone involved. To become a pass-catcher the quarterback returns to time and again, reliability is key. And Wilson has improved his route-running to get separation—”I’ve tried to make all my routes look the same, so I don’t show any tendencies off the line of scrimmage,” he said. But also, there’s something to be said for doing the simplest part of the job to the best of his ability. “I try to catch everything they throw my way, because if you do that they’re more comfortable throwing you a 50-50 ball,” Wilson said. “I want them to feel that if I can’t catch it, nobody is going to catch it.” With Craig taking the reins for the time being, reliability is something the Austin Peay offense needs more than ever as he settles in. And this can’t be stressed enough: the expectations don’t change from quarterback to quarterback. The belief in Craig is no different than the belief in Oatsvall.

“Right now, JaVaughn is settling in and getting comfortable,” Wilson said. “He’s finding his playmakers and we’re making plays for him. I’ve got the same expectations of JaVaughn as I do of JO; I know they can put the ball where it needs to go and make the right reads.”

moner, understand typical human stature to be. I once saw AJ Green when he was a wide receiver at Georgia; he was 6-4 and 200 pounds of granite and ran like a gazelle fleeing a pride of lions. It was inconceivable he was of the same flesh and bone you and I are made of.

Wilson doesn’t necessarily look like the guy who would boast the Wilson isn’t a larger than life force—if anything, he’s noticeable best athleticism on a football team. 5-8 and unassuming, he came because in this land of nimble giants, he looks exceedingly out of to the Govs from Bowling Green High School with a reputation place. All his life, he’s been the little guy; overlooked, misunderstood, for sure-handedness born doubted. It’s impossible to of a prep career that, realknow what goes through ly, should’ve been a pretty the mind of an opposing good indicator of what defensive back as he settles “I WANT THEM TO FEEL he’d do as a Gov. But, you in across from Wilson for know—5-8. It’s cliché to the first time; his stature THAT IF I CAN’T CATCH say that you can’t measure won’t scare anyone. IT, NOBODY IS GOING heart, desire and drive, but you can measure height; And then he gets the ball in TO CATCH IT.” 5-8 may leap off the page, his hands and suddenly it’s — DEANGELO WILSON but not for the prototypical everyone trying to stop him reason. who looks out of place as he sprints by them on the “A lot of schools I talked to way to another huge gain. told me I was a little too small,” Wilson said. “But Coach (Will) Healy took me in, treated me and my mom like family, and I knew this was “I hope they don’t doubt me because of my size, but I’m sure there the place for me. I’ve been fighting that my whole life. I just go out are people who do that,” Wilson said. “At the end of the day, I’m just and try to play bigger than I am.” going to prove everybody wrong.”
