Hubbard sent out a letter asking for support, which reached Lovings and piqued his interest. Having never been to Africa or on a mission trip, Lovings wanted to do more. He wanted to experience something powerful.

naian dish of fermented corn and cassava dough) to picking in the garden to slashing (cutting the grass with scythes). The afternoons offered more time to rest, along with both of the twice-daily devotional periods, before the day finally came to a close around 9:30 p.m.

He signed up to go serve in Ghana.

“You do what needs to be done, different stuff,” Lovings said. “I fixed a car one day. I helped put on tires and fixed a flat. It’s just about helping out; I just wanted to be around the kids as much as possible. The kids are awesome. These kids are behind the eight-ball—they may not have a family, that’s why they’re at the orphanage.

”Jason sent out a letter asking for support, and I answered to ask what I could do,” Lovings said. “I’d never been to Africa, I wanted to give back and do something I’d never done or experienced before. I had to go down to Orlando and go through some courses, and then they sent me to Ghana for about two weeks. “The courses in Orlando were basics ranging from currency exchange to preparing you for what you’d experience to daily chores and your daily schedule. But also it was a chance for the people involved to get to know us and get to know who they were sending to Africa for this trip.” For Lovings, the trip offered no apprehension—arriving with no preconceived notion of what he was walking into, he was able to absorb all that Africa had to offer him.

“You learn a lot, and they are eager to help you out and teach you their culture. Their norms and values may be different, but it’s so inviting. They accept you; the Ghanaian culture is an accepting and friendly culture, and that’s something I’ll take with me forever. It’s something that I want in my culture, wherever I’m building a football program. Invite everyone in. Be one big family.” It’s difficult to say whether Lovings’ experience changed him—I didn’t know him before his African jaunt. If nothing else, it reinforced who he wants to be, as a person and a coach. And his players at Austin Peay will be grateful for the man who returned from Ghana.

“I didn’t have any expectations,” he said. “I wanted to be a canvas. I didn’t know what to expect—Africa can have a $500 a night hotel and a tin hut right next to it. The disparity between rich and poor is really distinctive. I just wanted to take it in with open eyes and let Ghana show me what it is.” This visit was certainly not of the $500-a-night-hotel variety. Rafiki’s Ghanaian village is a series of white buildings on more than 50 acres of land, with a children’s home, a school, a soccer field and playground, a guesthouse for overseas volunteers, missionary housing and a farm. Established in 2001, it was the first Rafiki Village established on the continent and helped set the standard for all that came after. But that doesn’t mean it was the Club Med of mission trips. The days were long and the work arduous. Lovings and his fellow volunteers would arise early to help with chores, from cooking banku (a Gha-

“Life is about other people; that’s what coaches do daily, is serving other people’s kids,” he said. “You have to give back. Being a mentor to somebody, giving them a hug, just being there and listening to them—you have to get over yourself and give back to others.”
