A FOUNDATION They don’t get much credit. That’s kind of the deal when you become an offensive lineman: you have to be alright with doing the dirty work without getting much in the way of the glory. When a running back breaks through a hole the width of a city street and gallops untouched to the end zone, the offensive line is often picking itself up off the ground, 40 yards behind the play, because their sacrifice made it all possible. When a quarterback can go through progression after progression and finally hit his fourth or fifth option, who do you think has been keeping the marauding defensive front away? The o-line, that’s who. And sure, maybe some public recognition would be nice. But that’s not what drives these guys. “What we do basically allows them to get those stats,” said Byron Glass. “We know if we perform well, they’re going to perform well. And if they’re getting a bunch of credit, that’s good for us because it means we’re winning games.” Aside from the occasional All-Ohio Valley Conference honor (or in the case of Ryan Rockensuess, some academic accolades as well), they’re remarkable most in their consistency. For most of the last four years, regardless of what else was happening around them – good times, bad times and everything in between – the Governors interior was going to be just fine, thanks to Glass, Rockensuess and Ethan Self. Saturday will mark the end of that era. Rockensuess, Glass and Self will take the field for the final time as Governors; what they leave

behind may not make it into the history books, as offensive linemen seldom do; lack of stats and all that. But in this moment, we – you and I, dear reader – can take stock of the influence these young men have left behind. For starters, there’s the very obvious statement that the Governors were not very good at football when these guys arrived. That can no longer be said; perhaps this season has been up-and-down, but we’ll always have 2017, and it’s not even within shouting distance of the 0-23 start to their careers. And there’s no way everything that has come since happens without them. “I think everything’s changed since (we’ve) gotten here,” Rockensuess said. “It’s a complete 180-degree switch from coming in in the summer and getting summer classes and getting food in the summer. And on top of it, just training much harder in the offseason and preparing for the season. “I think we’ve really become the foundation for our offense. A lot of people can lean on us, or look at us and be like, ‘These guys are getting it done. We’ve got to keep going, keep moving forward. Even if times are bad, we’ve got to just keep going.’ I think it really helped us getting through any obstacle that’s been put in front of us throughout the years that I’ve here, especially the first mat drills. That was really difficult, but all the o-linemen just stuck together and were like, ‘Let’s go. We’re all going through this.’” If, as the old adage goes, everything in football starts in the trenches, then the Govs’ cohesion has paid huge dividends. These guys have played side-by-side for four years, with nary a start missed. To say

F E AT U R E S T O R Y

they know one another like the back of their proverbial hands is probably not quite accurate enough. “Having cohesion is a big deal because we all want to know what we were good at, what we were bad at,” Self said. “We can help each other and stuff like that. We can make each other better. Off the field, we’re pretty close; each and every one of us.” This trio might’ve reached the heights they’ve achieved regardless; they’re all three talented enough to have started more or less from the beginning of their collegiate careers. But the arrival of Joshua Eargle as offensive line coach and run game coordinator helped them take their raw talents and shape them into the d-line savaging group they’ve become. In addition to providing them with the week’s best meal each Thursday during football season.

(

Coach Eargle gets them ready during the week in other ways too. “I think he’s really good at creating a mindset for us to not accept being average, and that anything is possible,” Glass said. “He’s really good at teaching us on the field also, and pushing as hard as we can go. There were times I thought, ‘I don’t know if I can do anymore,’ but he’ll push us and get it out of us one way or the other. Once it’s done, you’re like, ‘That wasn’t too bad. I can do more.’” One more rep, one more lap, one more play. They’ve done more for four years and, to quote our new Director of Athletics, Gerald Harrison, they’re leaving this place better than they found it. Veterans, they can put into proper perspective just what it is they’ve done, and what they hope they’re leaving behind. “A legacy that we were part of changing things around, and we’re not a losing football team,” Self said. “You can win here. You can

)

“YOU CAN WIN HERE. YOU CAN DO WHAT YOU WANT.”

— ETHAN SELF

Thursday Night Throwdown at the Eargle abode has become a tradition, and Kristen Eargle – Coach Eargle’s wife and Austin Peay sideline reporter – comes through each week with a sumptuous meal. Chicken and waffles. Fish tacos. Oreo balls (a rumored favorite). But perhaps even better, it gets them more time with a family that has more or less adopted them as one of their own.

do what you want. Always having that chip-on-your-shoulder-type deal, because we don’t get the accolades or stats like other people do. I just want people to know that we can help those people. For future offensive lines to be tight-knit like us, because if you’re tight-knit like us, I think you can get through anything that they throw at you.”

“I think they’ve really taken all the o-linemen in as like our family away from home,” Rockensuess said. “I’m 600 miles away from home, so I don’t really get to have a family dinner all the time. It’s a huge deal getting to hang out with them each and every week. We all play Uno with (their daughter) Kourtney every week, and I’m not going to lie, she beats us sometimes.”
