The Gift of Christmas Shoes!
Saisha’s Story
For many of us, Christmas begins with slipping on shoes to walk to church, sing carols, or gather with family. But for Saisha, 45, from Sirkali village, this simple act was once filled with pain and sorrow. Leprosy had damaged her feet, leaving her with ulcers, infections, and finally the amputation of her left foot.
Her journey began at just 16, when she noticed an ulcer on her left foot. She had never heard of leprosy before. “I don’t know what’s in their hearts, but I didn’t see any signs of discrimination in front of me,” she says of her family, who stood by her even as she cried, watching her friends marry while she felt left behind.
By 20, her hands had clawed.
“I now feel I should have taken the surgery earlier, and I could have had that time to do something important. I regret that decision now.” At 36, doctors amputated her left foot.
“Why am I still alive? Why should I live anymore after the surgery?” she asked through tears.
Then hope arrived. She was fitted with an artificial limb. “I felt I got my life back after getting the limb, and I
even went to Delhi for travel, which made me very happy.”
Earlier this year, The Leprosy Mission India provided her with a lighter, more natural prosthetic. “I’m very happy that I received this new limb thanks to TLM… I never expected my hands would be straight like this, so I’m very thankful… I couldn’t believe this.”
Alongside her limb, Saisha also received a pair of Christmas Shoes These specially made shoes keep her fragile feet safe from further wounds. For her, they mean she can walk to church with dignity and joy, just like everyone else.

Your Gift of Cure for Prapti
Prapti is 18 years old and lives in Nepal with her mum, dad, elder brother, and his two children. Her family works hard together on their farm. They grow food to feed the family for six months each year; and then rely on selling their crops for the rest of the year to make money.
Two years ago, Prapti began to feel something strange. Her fingers hurt, almost like heat burning inside them, and soon she developed a fever. Within months, blisters appeared on her hand, back, and foot. She began missing school often, her friends wondering why she wasn’t coming. She had never even heard of leprosy, but after a private clinic in Janakpur referred her to a hospital an hour’s bus ride away, she was finally diagnosed.
“I was scared when I found out I had leprosy, if my friends or other neighbours found out about this, I wouldn’t know what would happen. I was also scared about how I would look like with these patches and the effect of the reaction that started to happen.”
Prapti was started on Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT) for 12 months. But within the first two months, she developed a severe reaction and had to be admitted to hospital for one month of treatment.
“When the doctors gave me a lot of medicine, I was so scared. Because I didn’t know if I was going to die. I started to feel weak again.”
Over the next few months, she had to
return to hospital several times. When arriving at The Leprosy Mission’s Hospital, she finally received the right treatment including medicine for her reaction. Just recently, she went back again after feeling pain in her right elbow. She is now waiting for results. Despite this long journey, Prapti remains hopeful:
“I’m happy that my family have been very supportive throughout this time. I had to miss attending school for a long time because I had to come back to the hospital over and over. I hope to continue my study and go to university one day. I would like to pursue a healthrelated subject. But if cannot do it I’m happy to do a management subject too. My dream is to become a nurse one day.”
