Beena has faced more challenges than most could imagine. Diagnosed with leprosy later in life, she endured painful operations on her legs and years of recovery. Her husband left after learning of her illness, leaving Beena to raise their young daughter alone. Despite the hardship, she refused to give up.
Through the support of Anandaban Hospital in Nepal, Beena was introduced to New SADLE, a fair trade organisation that provides employment to people affected by leprosy and disability. She discovered her gift for weaving and paper-making. Even with weak fingers and recurring ulcers, Beena creates beautiful handmade products that travel across the world, loved by people like you! Her work brings her independence, pride, and community.
Today, Beena’s daughter has completed her university studies and works full-time, a dream Beena once thought was impossible.
This New Year, when you choose fair trade and handmade gifts, you become part of stories like Beena’s – stories of hope, resilience, and renewal.
Each purchase brings brighter days to artisans rebuilding their lives, one handcrafted piece at a time.

Poonam has been married for 21 years and lives with her husband, two children, and father-in-law. Her husband works as a seasonal farmer, while their 19-year-old son supports the family by working in a brick factory. Life has never been easy, but together they’ve always found a way.
About four years ago, Poonam noticed a pale patch on her left elbow and a tingling sensation when she bent her arm. Trusting her instincts, she visited the local health post, where she was diagnosed with leprosy. She immediately began a 12-month course of multidrug therapy (MDT), the treatment provided through The Leprosy Mission’s Cure Package. After completing her treatment, she was fully cured and gradually regained feeling in her arm.
This wasn’t her family’s first encounter with leprosy. Her daughter had been diagnosed seven years earlier, at just 17. Thankfully, early diagnosis and treatment meant she too was cured before the disease could cause disability. Because of the awareness and support within their community, there was no fear or stigma, only care and understanding.
After recovering, Poonam joined a Self-Help Group supported by The Leprosy Mission. Thanks to supporters like you, she went through Financial Business Training, she learnt how to manage her income, access loans, and grow her

small business. With the cooperative’s support, she took out a loan to buy goats and also start growing chillies.
Just four months later, Poonam had repaid both loans through her earnings from goat sales and chilli harvests. She’s now producing her own seeds, making her farming more sustainable and profitable.
Poonam’s story is one of quiet strength of how practical support, community, and the right opportunities can transform lives.
Your Gifts of Love of Financial Business Training and Cure Package can help more families like Poonam’s overcome leprosy and build a secure future.
