Babita’s Christmas Cards Come with a Story of Strength
Meet Babita. Every Christmas card she creates is more than just festive, it’s a symbol of resilience, hope, and quiet determination.
Babita grew up in Kathmandu, Nepal, working hard to help provide for family. Her childhood was full of changes and uncertainty. But through it all, Babita discovered a love for art and design, a passion that would one day become her path to stability.
She married young. Her decision wasn’t easy. In fact, her family didn’t support it, except for her mother, who stood by her. But Babita followed her heart and began a new life with her husband.
Life didn’t always go smoothly. Her husband lost his job at a local factory, and with two young children to care for, Babita worried about their future. That’s when her mother-in-law introduced her to New SADLE, a social enterprise that empowers people affected by leprosy, disability and poverty. Babita took a leap of faith and began training in traditional Batik painting. It changed everything!
Now, Babita is one of the skilled artisans behind our beautiful handmade Batik Christmas cards. Using wax, dye, and steady hands, she paints intricate festive scenes. Each one crafted with patience and care. These cards are more than decorations; they’re a piece of Babita’s story.
Thanks to people like you who buy her designs, her children have completed school, and her daughter has the opportunity to work overseas.
This Christmas, every card you choose carries a message of hope. Thank you for supporting artisans like Babita. You make stories like hers possible.

Dhwani’s Story: From Numbness to New Life
Dhwani was just ten years old when the pale patches appeared—first on her right elbow, then across her back. Her parents didn’t know what it meant. No one in their village did. They took her to a traditional healer, hopeful and trusting. For two years, she drank the herbal brews, sat through rituals, and watched as the patches only grew.
She was 25 when a government team arrived in her village and gave the name to her silent, growing fear: leprosy.
“I didn’t know about leprosy. I was afraid. I didn’t know what it would mean for my life.”
By then, Dhwani had finished her studies and was still living with her parents. She began Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT), which cured the disease. She thought that chapter was behind her. There were no visible effects yet, she married a kind fisherman, started her family and she kept her diagnosis to herself due to shame and stigma.
“I didn’t think anything more would happen,” she said quietly. “I didn’t
know that deformities could still come years later.”
Dhwani and her husband built a life together by the sea, raising two children. But in the background, slowly, leprosy left its marks. First her fingers began to curl. Then came numbness in her feet. When her husband found out, the warmth in their home faded. Verbal abuse began. Isolation grew. Eventually, he left her, choosing to live with their daughter in another district.
Today, Dhwani lives with her son in a humble rental house. She used to help distribute fish, earning a small commission, but as her deformities progressed, she could no longer carry the baskets.
“I didn’t want to sell fish either. People wouldn’t buy from me.”
Her world became smaller. Her steps more painful. Until one day, she heard about a leprosy camp being held nearby. That’s where she met
Our Leprosy Mission staff visiting Dhwani in India.
“I didn’t think anything more would happen,” Dhwani said quietly. “I didn’t know that deformities could still come years later.”
staff from The Leprosy Mission.
From there, her journey began again—with hope.
She received surgery to straighten her left thumb. With regular physiotherapy and splints, she’s now preparing for further surgery to correct her clawed fingers.
But one of the most unexpected gifts was something so many of us take for granted, a pair of protective shoes.
“My feet have lost all feeling. But these shoes… they protect me. They stop the injuries I don’t even feel happening.”
Dhwani’s feet show signs of past damage, cuts and scars that could’ve turned into ulcers. With proper footwear and care, she can still walk to the local market and feel confident stepping out of her home.
The gift of Christmas Shoes helps rewrite someone’s story.
This Christmas, Dhwani is not asking for much. She is still healing. Still hoping. She doesn’t know if she’ll ever be able to work again. But thanks to people like you she’s standing, walking, and smiling.
Your generosity can go even further when you buy your own pair of ethically made thongs, you’ll also help support someone in need, someone like Dhwani. A woman whose journey, courage, and quiet strength remind us that every step forward is a step worth celebrating.
“A wonderful way to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas.” Mary

Mitali’s Hands Are Crafting a New Future
Mitali never imagined her life would be shaped by handmade work. She grew up in a crowded neighbourhood on the outskirts of Delhi, India, where opportunities were scarce and hope even scarcer. Her family struggled financially, and like many girls in her community, Mitali was encouraged to marry young. By her early twenties, she was a mother of two, doing whatever she could to put food on the table.
But when her husband’s work became inconsistent, the responsibility fell on Mitali’s shoulders. She wanted more for her children: schooling, stability and a safe home. And yet, with no formal education or work experience, her options were limited. That’s when Mitali discovered
POWHER at Mesh, a local initiative offering training and dignified employment to women from low-income households. She joined their artisan team, where she learned to create beautiful, handcrafted products, each one stitched, woven, or beaded with care and intention.
It was a turning point.
Through her work, Mitali not only earned a reliable income, but also gained confidence and community. Your purchases have enabled her to save money, sending her daughter to school with the hope that she’d have more choices than she did. Each product Mitali makes carries the story of her resilience.
“Before POWHER, I didn’t think my hands could do anything special,” Mitali shares. “Now, these hands are building a future for my children.”
Your support makes this possible. When you choose ethical, artisan-made products, you help women like Mitali step into dignity and independence. Every purchase empowers a mother, sustains a family, and transforms a story once marked by hardship into one of strength and possibility. Thank you for shopping with purpose this Christmas. You’re not just buying beautiful gifts, you’re helping someone build a beautiful life.

A Goat, a Gift, and a Growing Future
Lanni has been married to her husband for 32 years. Together, they’ve built a life of resilience and love, rooted in farming. Their big family of two sons, a daughter, and three grandchildren all live together in one lively, shared household. But it was not like this before.
A few years ago, Lanni noticed strange patches appearing on her left arm. Within six months, they had spread across her body. Doctors couldn’t identify the issue at first, until she spoke at a community meeting run by a local group. There, she was diagnosed with leprosy. Most people would be heartbroken— but not Lanni.
“I laughed when the doctor told me,” she recalls. “Because now I knew what was wrong and I could be cured.”
With her spirit, Lanni shared the news openly. Her family and neighbours were supportive, and her courage helped others in her village seek treatment too. That’s the power of speaking up and support from people like you.
Lanni’s determination didn’t stop at recovery. She joined a Self-Help Group and eventually became chairperson of her local cooperative through the SPROUTS project, supported by The Leprosy Mission. With a loan, she received four goats
and even funds to improve her goat shed. Her goats are now a growing source of income for the whole family.
She also took part in training in goat raising, business skills, disaster management, and gender sensitivity, learning how to manage money, track income, and lead with confidence.
“I used to only know farming. But now I can run a business, train others, and help my whole community.”
This Christmas, your Gift of Love of a Goat or Financial Business Training can spark the transformation for someone like Lanni and her community.
It’s more than a donation. It’s a fresh start. It’s hope and dignity for people affected by leprosy, disability and poverty to earn a dignified income of their own.
Will you help empower someone to build a brighter future?

Helping Cure the Next Child in Need
Upon arriving at Anandaban Hospital in Nepal, Kamal’s condition was severe. His young face swelled with disfiguring patches and lesions.
Kamal was very sad about how leprosy had affected him... but he did not know a far more terrible truth. We had caught him on the brink of a fate much, much worse –a lifetime of severe disabilities and deformities. That is what leprosy can cause if left too long without treatment.
He was suffering from leprosy reaction, a complication that exacerbates the disease. His small body had one of the highest levels of bacteria and infection that the doctors had ever seen.
After small red patches appeared on his face, his mum took him to a local healer. The healer told Kamal’s family that the snake god had cursed him.
Fear gripped the family. And while his family tried to lift the curse with costly offerings they couldn’t afford, Kamal got sicker and sicker.
Kamal started a strict treatment plan. It included three steroid medications and multi-drug therapy (MDT). The medical team worked hard to improve his critically low nutrition.
The good news now is Kamal’s leprosy will not define his future. Leprosy Mission supporters are creating a path for him, offering care and a cure. Soon, Kamal can put leprosy behind him.
Too many people still suffer – even though it can be cured. Sadly, others don’t have your knowledge about leprosy, or your love for those who suffer its pain.
That’s why, we’re asking you to join the front-line teams in the Screening BLITZ to end child leprosy by 2035.
Donate a $435 Cure Pack to help us reach the next child in need. Your support can prevent severe disabilities and deformities for a lifetime. Join the generation to end leprosy!
