Your $15 for Protective Shoes this Christmas may be the difference between mobility and independence or amputation and disability You may remember Chandra Maya. We first met her at The Leprosy Mission’s Anandaban Hospital on a visit to your projects in Nepal. She had undergone surgery and had received a prosthetic leg and protective sandals. However, back in Nepal recently, we found Chandra Maya had returned and was scheduled for a foot amputation.

Because of leprosy damaging her nerves, she hasn’t been able to feel the infection in her foot. She’s had a long-term ulcer that just hasn’t been healing.

The doctors at Anandaban Hospital suspected she may need an amputation.

They were hoping with diligent self-care and by starting to wear her protective sandals, the wound may be able to heal. That she may not need the surgery.

But she’s had leprosy so long and help came too late.

As Chandra Maya gets older, it gets harder having a heavy artificial leg and the constant ulcer care is tiring. Her grandson is there at the hospital to support her. They see the amputation as a positive step. It has plagued her for a long time now. After the surgery, she will have to wait for the foot to be made.

After this, she will need time to learn to walk with it.

When patients live far away, they need to stay at the hospital for 3-4 months to wait for the leg to be made and then to practice using it. But as Chandra Maya lives in a leprosy community nearby, she can choose to go home to recover from the surgery before coming back for the fitting.

Renu’s Story

When your gift is worth much more than the paper it’s wrapped in…

It’s a whole Cure Package! leprosy bacteria) and have had to keep coming back to the hospital for further treatment. This has meant taking them both away from their family again.

But Lalsari is hopeful, “I have not lost hope.

As long as there is life, there is hope - I can do something to earn a living and take care of my children. I can be happy again,” Bishal’s mother Lalsari says.

Lalsari’s Story Lalsari and her son Bishal have spent many long stays at The Leprosy Mission’s Anandaban Hospital in Nepal.

Although they are cured of leprosy now, their initial Multi-Drug Therapy was required for 24 months!

That’s double the usual 12 months of daily medicine it takes to be considered cured of leprosy in most cases. Their leprosy bacterial count was still way too high after one year, so they had to stay on it much longer. They feel so blessed that people like you have been supporting them throughout their extended treatment. Their family could have never afforded this on their own.

Thankfully, through The Leprosy Mission community outreach program, Lalsari (and her husband) were able to work at a nearby paper factory in Kathmandu throughout her treatment.

“I enjoy working here. Now I feel a sense of belonging. I have a place to stay and work,” Lalsari says gratefully.

Sadly, both Lalsari and Bishal, now cured of leprosy, have been suffering from Leprosy Reaction (an immune system response to

Your love and compassion also meant Bishal has received a Gift of Love Educational scholarship. He is now back at school and enjoys learning with his friends. “I love English and Mathematics class. I want to be a doctor when I grow up so I can help other people affected by leprosy,” said Bishal.

At just seven years old, Maya has faced unimaginable hardship. Being diagnosed with leprosy was life-changing enough. Shortly afterwards, Maya lost her much-loved father.

Heartbroken, she then watched as her family’s home in Nepal was swept away in devastating floods. Maya must have felt that her whole world had been swept away with it. She desperately needed her friends.

In her hour of need, Maya was no longer welcome at school. Her teachers and classmates believed that she was cursed and excluded her out of fear.

Can you imagine how lonely she felt?

Across the world, leprosy is robbing children like Maya of the opportunity to get an education. Many families can’t afford to send their children to school. Children are stopped from learning because of misguided beliefs and hurtful discrimination.

If we do nothing, countless children will suffer the physical and emotional toll of leprosy, made worse by the loss of their education and friends. We know that this is not God’s plan for these precious children.

Jesus held out his hands to children when others turned away. Today, you too can reach out to children like Maya when others have shunned them. You can make sure they have everything they need to go to school.
