Exercise 1 Portrait of a Building or Space Technique: Montage Brief: Create a portrait of a chosen space using the camera to structure a moving image narrative, capturing the essence and atmosphere of the place.

Be guided by your individual experiential/ perceptual/cognitive image of the space. You are encouraged to dramatise the space, to emphasise its characteristics, to consider its temporal dimension (e.g. pace, rhythm in edit). Focus on the Chosen Space: Unused semi-private space located at the university.

Exercise 2 Observing Action in a Space Technique: following action on the fly, one continuous shot, camera is hand-held.

Participants shoot one member of their group performing an action in the same space portrayed in exercise 1, in real time. Consider the following: where to place the camera, how to shoot from different angles to allow for edit points, cutaways.

This is an exercise from observational documentary film making: the camera must be as unobtrusive as possible, not interfering with the subject/action. No interference of cinematographer with the life action.

No rehearsals and no second takes are allowed.

Using Film Skills in Andover Estate Skills acquired in the film workshop can be utilised in Andover Estate to help strengthen our hypothesis

1. Montage A collection of views of the Andover Estate to convey its overall atmosphere. Special attention will be paid to areas of contested privacy, including circulation spaces, garages, and open areas.

2. Observing Action in a Space Film could be used as a tool to document scores that will be carried out there. This well help to show how people perceive the space and demonstrate what they can interpret from the space by using their bodies.

3. Filmic Essay The filmatic essay will focus on the potential of the semi public/private spaces around the Andover estate, as well as areas that are currently occupied by cars.

Results of Proposed Survey System To test the new survey system we picked an area within the estate that represented most of the common typologies that we had found representing elements of home. We used the scores and film to closely survey the space to allow a survey of many layers.

Other important elements of the space include...

- it’s larger than the required standard space - it’s function as circulation space but nothing else - the connection to both private homes and open semi private space(the square) Therefore this would be a space that has potential for innovation, and this survey will help us to understand the elements that charecterise this space.

Aim The goal of the score is to understand the circulation patterns of the space and what affects them.

07 Understanding Space

Aim The graphic score does not have specific instructions,allowing different participants to interpret it differently and therefore have several interactions with the space, resulting to more observations and information. Goal of the score is to gain a better understanding of the space’s current conditions; what kind of movement does it allow, what are the acoustics, what is the relationship of the space with the human body, etc.

Instructions 1. Stand in the centre of the selected space, close your eyes, take3 deep breaths, open your eyes and take note of how you feel in the space.

2. Study and follow the graphic score.

3. Have someone take a video of you while performing the score.

4. Once you finish the score, take again some notes of how you feel in the space now.

5. Have another participant repeat the score but to perform it in a direction perpendicular to the first one.

Aim The score wants to achieve a better understanding of the elements that influence one’s actions besides the physical ones. The score’s instructions allow the participants to spend more time noticing their environment.

Way finding and Safety

Aim The score aims to gather element that help one’s wayfinding throughout a certain space, as well as element that provoke feelings of safety or unsafety during that journey and whether the 2 affect one another.

Instructions 1. On the map that you were given, select and mark two specific points of interest.

2. Draw three possible paths (1,2,3) on the map from A to B. 3. While walking, the first person should take photographs of any objects or spaces that makes them feel safe or unsafe (gates, cameras, light/ shadow, etc.)

4. While walking, the second person should take photographs of any objects or spaces that makes help them find their way (signage, network, lights, etc.)

5. When you arrive at point B both participants should write down 3 emotions they felt while walking through path 6. Go back to point A following path 2 and repeat.

7. When you arrive at point A, go back to B, following path 3 and repeat.

10 Soundscape

Aim The goal of the score is to gather different patterns of sounds from different points of a space and to understand how those could indicate certain rituals or even their absence.

2. The first participant of the score should find a point within the selected space that seems quite and sit down.

3. Start an audio recording and a video.

4. For 2 minutes listen and draw a continuous line that relates directly to your understanding of what you hear.

6. Note in your sketchbook what you think were the sources of the sounds you heard.

7. The second participant should find another quite point and repeat the score.

8. The third and fourth participants of the score should find a point within the selected space that seems busy and repeat the score simultaneously.

Instructions 1. Prepare your film by identifying areas that could the backdrop to daily rituals. To identify how it relates to the home make sure it is a space with an element of residential qualities.

2. When arriving on site, take note of the time and walk around the estate to experience the places you identified.

3. Whilst doing this if you notice any unplanned rituals film them.

4. Film in the places you expected to find rituals and take note if there is anything you expected.

5. When home from the site visit, view and listen to all the clips to understand the journey you took through the estate and identify the rituals you observed (either on or off film.

6. Edit your film using a line as the protagonist, representing all the rituals and your journey through the estate.

7. Choose appropriate music to set the tone and tempo for your film.

8. Identify the most important sounds from the site and make sure they are clearly audible amongst the music.
