Decorative Arts
We open our last seasonal auction of the year with property from the estate of Bob and Gladys Parry, an extraordinary collection of clocks, automata, and mechanical music.
Gladys's passion was porcelain, which she started collecting in the 1960s (lots 128 & 129), whereas Bob was fascinated with clocks, automata, and mechanical music. Bob’s collecting began with romantic origins – a music box purchased from Kozminsky Galleries in 1972 as a gift to Gladys on their 21st wedding anniversary. From this, their interest in mechanical music grew, leading into associated collecting categories such as automata and clocks, including some musical examples.
Having family living abroad, Bob and Gladys had the opportunity to travel to the UK and the USA every second year, allowing acquisition of exceptional quality items not readily available in Australia at the time, with purchases of music boxes from acclaimed specialist dealers such as Arthur Lewis from Lewis of Hereford Ltd and, closer to home, Creswick Antiques. Music was a strong theme throughout their collection, with no less than nine music boxes each with various features, such as bells, drums, strikers, castanets, and organs, by renowned makers including Nicole Frères, Humbert Brolliet, and Allard & Jaquet (lots 10-17 and lot 20). The collection also extended to other mechanical music such as polyphones, including a coin-operated polyphon disc music box automaton with a Savoyard organ grinder (lot 18).
Other highlights from the Parry collection include a finely detailed musical chalet clock (lot 7), a very large musical picture clock (lot 8), a lovely singing bird automaton (lot 9), and a rare ‘Cornettino’ fairground barrel organ by Frati & Co. (lot 21), likely awarded prizes at international expositions of the 1880s.
Our second single-owner collection is selected property from the Collection of Lily and Louis Kahan (lots 25-34). Being patrons of the arts and having an appreciation of artistry in all forms, it is no surprise that a highlight of the Kahan collection is a selection of furniture by the esteemed Melbourne craftsman Schulim Krimper. Most of this was made for the Kahan family in the late 1950s and 1960s, including a drinks trolley, a nest of tables, and a cabinet. The most notable piece in the collection, and the only piece not bespoke made, is a rare glass-topped black bean desk (lot 34), which Krimper retained as his own desk and was purchased by Lily and Louis Kahan from his widow Elsbeth in the 1970s. The desk is likely to have been made around 1960 and is featured in Terence Lane and Mark Strizic’s 1987 book on Krimper’s work.
As the third single-owner collection in our November auction, we are very pleased to offer a curated selection of predominantly 18th-century English furniture, silver, and art from the collection of Mary Adamson (lots 36–72), a long-standing client and friend of Leonard Joel. Mary’s passion for antiques began early in life, growing up in the historic convict-built home ‘Wyvenhoe’ in Hobart. Her deep appreciation for English country furniture and fine objects blossomed during the early years of her marriage, when she and her husband lived in the UK. Once back in Australia, with her discerning eye, she continued developing her collection, becoming well-known as a knowledgeable collector and cultivating close relationships with wellrespected local dealers including Miles Bovill, John and Andrew Wilson, Ross Grace, Miguel Meirelles, and Jamie Allpress, among others.
Following our featured single-owner collections we have the mixed vendor parts of the auction offering a rich and diverse selection of silver, glass, porcelain, furniture, fine art and sculpture, and antiquities.
Highlights from these sections include a magnificent large Victorian sterling silver centrepiece epergne candelabrum by Elkington & Co. (lot 93); a large George II sterling silver dish by coveted silversmith Paul Storr (lot 107); a large signed Aubusson verdure tapestry formerly in the collection of the Melbourne print-maker Jessie Traill (lot 176); and a pair of Regency terrestrial and celestial globes on stands by the leading London maker, W. & J. M. Bardin (lot 185), consigned from a private Melbourne institutional collection, to which they were donated circa 1957 to be lent to furnish Cook's Cottage, Melbourne, where they were exhibited until the 1970s.
Closing our auction, we have a small selection of Egyptian and Roman antiquities, mostly from the collection of Dr Christine Rothauser, who acquired these in France in the 1970s and ‘80s (lots 233-242).
