A Life in London:

The Jo Walker Collection

London shaped my eye. It was there, amid its galleries, auction houses and antique markets, that I learned to see objects not as things, but as stories: traces of time, taste and craftsmanship. My years in London were spent discovering beauty in contrast: gilt beside iron, the refined beside the timeworn. A Life in London is the story of that journey, a collection built piece by piece, guided by curiosity, instinct and the quiet joy of finding something that feels both rare and right.

Collecting began almost by accident. I was searching for a mantel clock and instead began collecting. That first find set me on a path through auction rooms, markets and warehouses across Europe, from the Paris flea markets to Roman antique fairs, from small French villages to the grand salerooms of London, Paris and New York. Each discovery deepening my fascination with the beauty of craftsmanship and the stories objects hold.

My love of antiques began much earlier. My grandmother’s house was full of pieces that carried their own history, and as a child I was captivated by the way she treated objects - not as possessions, but as companions with lives of their own. That early influence never left me.

My background is in economics and finance, but my passion for art and history led me to study Fine and Decorative Arts at Christie’s in London. It was there that my eye was truly trained - not only to recognise form and style, but to understand context, provenance and the cultural threads that connect seemingly ordinary things. That experience, combined with years spent attending auctions and exhibitions across Europe, shaped how I see objects: as reflections of people, places and time.

In London, I found myself not just collecting but trading - learning to let objects pass through my hands and into others’. I dealt in 18th- and 19th-century French, English and Italian furniture and decorative arts, drawn to pieces that held a certain spirit. I became particularly fond of Victorian Majolica, papier-mâché, and of vintage fashion that carried traces of their past lives. Those years taught me that dealing is as much about intuition and empathy as it is about knowledge.

Over the years, my eye has been drawn to contrast: the opulent and the industrial, the refined and the timeworn. I adore the theatricality of giltwood and ormolu, the quiet poetry of French industrial design, and the tension that arises when these worlds meet. Collecting, to me, has never been about perfection or price, but about connection - finding pieces that speak with character, humour or depth.

My favourite piece is the monumental clock face from a building in northern France. I found it while travelling with my daughter, then three years old. It was a day I’ll never forget. Her eyes lit up when she saw it, as did mine. It hung in the entrance of my home for years, a constant reminder of that moment. The clock itself no longer kept time - it was right only twice a day - yet somehow, it always felt timeless.

Some of the most special pieces in this collection are not the most expensive, but the ones whose stories linger: a French industrial table with the scars of use, an ornate mirror that once hung in a London townhouse, an ancient Campanian Hydria, an occasional table from Winston Churchill’s estate, and a sculpture of Michelangelo’s David modelled in original scale, its faint tide line still visible at the eyes – a quiet testament to the great Florentine flood of 1966. Together they form a portrait not just of design, but of a life lived among beautiful and interesting things, where history and chance intertwine.

Every piece in this collection has shared a part of my life - moments of travel, laughter, learning, and time spent with the people I love. As they pass into new hands, I hope they carry forward not only their history, but also the joy, curiosity and wonder that first drew me to them. Perhaps it’s fitting that this collection begins and ends with a clock. Collecting, after all, is about time itself - the time spent searching, living alongside these objects, and knowing when the moment has come to let them go. To part with them now feels like both closure and renewal: the passing of one hour into the next. In that sense, A Life in London will always live on - not in a place, but in the stories these objects continue to tell.

A likely attribution for the present lot would seem to be the celebrated neo-classical architect, James Wyatt. The distinctive trellis decoration relates to a suite of furniture including a pair of side cabinets known to have been designed by him for Heveningham Hall, Suffolk, and which are now on view at Heaton Hall, near Manchester. The finely detailed frieze on the offered lot would further tend to support a Wyatt attribution as it is similar to those seen on several pier tables also designed for Heveningham.
