The Collector's Auction
This auction presents a curated selection of art, design, and history — an assembly that bridges centuries, continents, and styles. From the bold expressiveness of modern Australian artists to the timeless elegance of European decorative arts and the enduring mystery of antiquities, this sale invites collectors to journey through a world of refined craftsmanship and creativity.
Anchoring the modern and contemporary offering are familiar names such as Brett Whiteley, David Boyd, and Robert Dickerson. Of particular note is a unique painting by Garry Shead featuring Australian swimming legend Dawn Fraser. Further enriching the Australian art component is a collection of John Olsen-decorated stoneware pieces, whose whimsical and calligraphic line work capture the artist’s playful experimentation with potter Robert Mair.
From the international sphere, an elegant painting by Danish artist Carl Vilhelm Holsøe draws the eye inward to a quiet evening interior, a study in light and atmosphere. The furniture selection offers its own masterworks, notably a superb Régence kingwood bombe commode in the manner of Pierre Hache — a statement piece for any home — and an impressive William & Mary longcase clock by Richard Baker of London, highlighting the incredible skill in marquetry work of this period.
The auction also brings to market the Odino Collection of Antiquities, offered for the first time. Collected over generations by a Northern Italian family, it began in the 19th century with Roman, Greek and Etruscan objects gathered by Mario Odino’s great-grandfather. The late Dr Mario Odino, a maritime lawyer, brought the collection to Australia in the 1960s, where it has remained. The pieces reflect both the cultures of the ancient Mediterranean and a family’s long commitment to collecting.
Other highlights include a selection of Russian silver and enamel and an array of Asian works of art that speaks to centuries of artistic tradition. Property from a Private Woollahra Residence rounds out the offering, bringing with it a refined blend of silverware, art, and objects, chosen for a life well-lived and beautifully appointed.
With its breadth of periods and genres, The Collector’s Auction offers more than individual treasures — it offers the chance to compose a collection that reflects both the diversity and depth of human creativity.

James Bourlet & Sons was a company known for its expertise in fine art packing, framing, and related services. After PAOLO CALIARI (VERONESE) (Italian School, 19th century)
Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints (The San Zaccaria Altarpiece) oil on canvas
114.5 x 64.5cm
provenance
Private collection, Sydney
other notes
This composition was originally painted by Veronese for the Pala di San Zaccaria when it was restored in 1562, and is now housed in the collection of the Gallerie Accademia, Venice. It is a fine example of his early works with harmonious richness of colour. The young John the Baptist stands at the meeting point of the two compositional diagonals formed by the figures of St. Joseph, St. Francis and St. Jerome, who are invested with a look of detached spirituality. The colour is made vibrant by a continual juxtaposition of light and dark tones.

It was paid, together with other two drawings of semi-dressed ladies , 50 lire of the time.
In 1920 the collector Charles Loesar, friend of my father, presented him to Dr.Ross (attached is his visiting card) who acquired for the Boston Museum the two figures of women for 1000 dollars. Father did not want however to part with the “Two Heads of Angels”.

In the latter half of the nineteenth century, art schools began to emerge across the Indian subcontinent. The faculties comprising predominantly of British teachers instituted a model of education combining academic training with native techniques to scale up the production as the outputs from the schools’ workshops went to meet the demands of the European market, following the successful reception of Indian art in the Great Exhibition in London in 1851.
The ‘Jeypore School of Industrial Arts’ opened in 1866 at the behest of the Maharaja Ram Singh II. From the outset, the school’s main ideology was to ‘exhibit’ rather than to produce articles of direct utility.

The Odino Collection of Antiquities
lots 152 – 207
Collected across generations by a distinguished Northern Italian family, this remarkable selection of antiquities reflects a legacy of curiosity, scholarship, and refined taste.
The late Dr Mario Odino (pictured) was a prominent maritime lawyer whose professional life was spent navigating the complex legal world of international shipping. Mario and his Australian wife shared a passion for collecting, amassing objects of beauty and historical resonance with the eye of true connoisseurs.
The origins of this collection trace back to the 19th century, beginning with Mario’s great-grandfather, a man captivated by the classical world—particularly Roman, Greek and Etruscan antiquity. Mario’s father, Domenico Odino, served as a senior naval officer during the Second World War, and Mario himself completed naval service before relocating to Australia in the 1960s due to illness. The collection made that journey with the family and has remained in Australia ever since.
Offered now for the first time, these pieces reflect not only the cultural richness of the ancient Mediterranean but also the quiet legacy of a family who preserved them across centuries and continents.
