HOME SECURITY TIPS OVER THE HOLIDAYS If you’re lucky enough to be heading away over the holidays, have a great time! Just be sure to take some time out before you leave to ensure your home is safe and secure from intruders this season. A little peace of mind is a great way to start that holiday. With that in mind, here are a few helpful tips to prevent your house becoming a target for thieves.

Secure Your House Ensure all doors and windows are fitted with good quality locks, and double check they are secure before leaving. Do not leave keys in any locks. Place all valuables our of sight. Fit and/ or check external sensor lights around entrances & security alarm systems. Ensure all garden tools, ladders, and other tools that may be used to break into your house are secured away. Lock the shed and side gates. Place secuirty signage in visible locations. Turn down the volume of your telephone, and do not leave a message stating you are away.

Secure Your House Not only can the neighbours help keep up appearances, but they can also be your eyes and ears when you’re not there. Don’t forget to leave them with emergency contact numbers. Trim your lawn and tidy the yard prior to leaving. Use an automatic timer for lights. Have your bin put out and put away on rubbish days. Have you mail collected daily. If nobody is available to collect your mail, Australia Post will hold your mail whilst you are away for a fee. Place a ‘No Junk Mail’ sign on the letterbox to ensure no advertising clutter builds up.

A few extra tips... Cancel milk & newspaper deliveries. If heading away just after Christmas, do not leave packaging for electronic and other expensive items in the bin, as this can alert would-be thieves as to what’s on offer inside your home. 60 YEARS LATER... FROM JUST 12 HOUSES IN THE 50’s (LEFT) TO AN ESTIMATE OF 7020 HOUSES TODAY (RIGHT).

CASH’S CROSSING BRIDGE Road access to the Pine Rivers region was limited until the discovery of gold at Gympie in 1867. Prior to this time, the first road in the area crossed the South Pine River at Cash’s Crossing. Until the 1870’s, there was no bridge and the crossing was undertaken at the shallow point of the river. The southern approach to the original crossing, is named after the first settler, James Cash, and is now known as Cash’s Crossing. The original bridge was a low level structure and built in 1892, This was washed away in 1893, and rebuilt. During the floods of April 1908, both the north and south approaches to the bridge were washed away, leaving only the middle section of the bridge standing. This was not repaired until February 1912. In 1931 bridge was completely washed away again. A new higher bridge (picture bottom left) was built in 1934, and survived the 1972 floods only to have the northern approach washed away in 1974. Picnic spot at Cash’s Crossing in the 1950’s

Extensive sand and gravel extraction took place in 1936 to provide material to build the Story Bridge and Eagle Farm Airport, and a gravel plant was established not far from the crossing at this time. The new Cash’s Crossing Bridge (picture below) was officially opened on 13 August 1993.
