LEMMON DROPS: By moving to Oslo Road, C.W. Willis Family Farms positioning itself for future Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the first official day of summer:

• Even though the citrus industry has been on the decline

for years, C.W. Willis Family Farms has big plans for a 7.46acre parcel in the 3700 block of Oslo Road. They currently operate a 20-acre nursery at 1405 58th Ave. After they move the nursery to Oslo Road (that’s Phase 1), the real fun will begin. Phase 2 is building an open-air produce stand, having an open-air eatery, and running a distribution building for produce. They anticipate that will take about 18 months to complete. C.W. Willis Family Farms purchased the parcel on Oslo Road for $966,749 in 2018, according to the Property Appraiser’s website. “There’s a lot going on along Oslo Road,” said Melissa Willis, wife of the operation’s namesake, Chris William Willis. “There’s a huge concentration of rooftops.”

The family is very familiar with the current state of the citrus industry. They own groves in Lake Wales (150 acres) and Fort Pierce (70 acres). Still, they were not deterred in forging ahead with this family enterprise. The intention, she said, is to one day leave it to their three kids – twins Colin Russ Lemmon and Caleigh (age 15) and daughter Cadie (11). I’ve always considered the vacant city block just east of the Vero Beach Police Department headquarters to be a “sleeping giant.” Billy Moss, a broker with Lambert Commercial Real Estate, is now listed as the contact person for the 3.75-acre parcel. “It’s a major piece of property in Vero Beach,” he said. “It’s an ‘impact’ property.” Moss believes retail stores, restaurants and apartments are among the possibilities for the block.

He’s confident it will be sold while he is the listed broker. “That’s my mission,” he said. Thanks to Woody Sutton, a former executive with Union Pacific, for keeping me updated with Virgin Trains USA’s plans for high-speed passenger service from Orlando to Miami. According to an article he emailed me from Railway Age’s website, “construction is expected to be completed and service will begin between South Florida and Orlando in 2022.” If I recall correctly, the original completion date was supposed to be 2018. Whether they keep to the 2022 schedule, or there’s another long delay, remains to be seen. Szechuan Palace’s 30-year run with owners Sue and John Liang comes to an end June 15. The Chinese restaurant would definitely rank in the Top 10, and maybe even the Top 5, for local restaurants currently operating under the same family ownership for the longest time. The Ocean Grill (1965) would top the list. Bobby’s (1981)

appears to be No. 2, followed by C.J. Cannon’s (1984). The Kountry Kitchen has been under the same ownership since 1998. Owner Mark Santangelo said the restaurant operated by that name for at least 15 years before he bought it. Is there a bigger “empty threat” than the one on a sign at the entrance to an apartment complex across the street from Indian River Charter High School? The sign says, “Private Community. No Turn Around. Violators will be prosecuted.” I’d be willing to bet not one person has been prosecuted ,,, or will be prosecuted. In this space three weeks ago, I asked about your first job. (Mine was selling shoes at JCPenney’s.) Barbara McElroy made me laugh with her response. “My first job, when I was 16 (you had to get working papers), was in McCrory’s 5 & 10, selling toys,” she said in an email. “When I was 17, they moved me to Men’s Underwear and I quit!”
