LEMMON DROPS: Pressing the ‘pause’ button to give thanks Some rapid-fire, holiday-themed Lemmon Drops (many are repeats from previous Thanksgivings):

• I’m thankful to be living in Indian River County. I love

the pace of life here. So glad we don’t have to compete in the “rat race.” I’m thankful for the beautiful weather here, especially from November through May. There’s no better place to be. I’m thankful Hurricane Matthew drifted 20 miles to the east before hitting Indian River County. A Category 1 storm was scary enough … can’t imagine what a Cat 4 would be like! I’m thankful there’s a height limit for buildings in Indian River County. It’s our insurance policy against becoming “another South Florida.” I’m thankful for all of the snowbirds who make their way here each year. They add a certain “spice” to the area. Most of the snowbirds I meet are appreciative and know

how good they have it. I’m thankful that neither State Road 60 nor County Road 512 looks like U.S. 192 in Melbourne. (With each passing year, though, the similarities increase.) I’m thankful Sebastian and Fellsmere are in Indian River County. When you visit each community, it’s like taking a Russ Lemmon step back in time. I’m thankful I’ve gotten to meet dozens of smallbusiness owners during the past two years. Such quality people. Josh Binafif, Joel Stout, Brenda and Jim Weller, Mark Santangelo, Greg Hepler, Tiffany and Eric Barkwell, Brian Schauder, Jurgen Schwanitz, Chuck Cannon, Barbara and David Letts, Chad Leonard, Tom and Beverly Lowther, Sammy Boksmati, Ana Cendejas … I could go on and on. (They are the reason I ran the “Small Business Saturday” ad in this week’s issue.) I’m thankful Indian River County is home to roughly

18,000 military veterans. Thank you for your service. I’m thankful there is a Bob Evans restaurant in Indian River County. As I always say, this is my connection to the Midwest. (Having spent the first 21 years of my life in Indiana, I’m a Midwesterner at heart.) I’m thankful there are no orange barrels currently on U.S. 1. I’m thankful Indian River County has three top-flight libraries. I’m thankful sister publications Vero Beach 32963 and Vero News exist, because they provide competition for the Press Journal. I’d hate to see the content in the PJ if it didn’t have such formidable competition. I’m thankful for Vision Plus, Treasure Coast Jewelers & Music, Sandpiper Pest Control, Lowther Funeral Home and Colkitt Air Conditioning for having an ad in every issue of Lemmon Lines. I’m thankful for the 879 followers on Twitter and the 662 “Likes” on Facebook. Some people scoff at the social

media, but there’s no denying it has changed the way we communicate. Just ask President-elect Donald Trump. I’m thankful for the level of traffic in Indian River County. Most days, I drive from one end of the county to the other – and sometimes I do it more than once. I’m always befuddled when people complain about the traffic. I’m thankful for the 20 wonderful years my wife and I have had together. She was scared to death when I started this venture – after all, I left a secure job with good benefits at the Press Journal – but she trusted my instincts. I’m thankful so many readers have made Lemmon Lines a weekly habit. We couldn’t do it without you! I’m thankful for the advertisers in Lemmon Lines. If you enjoy reading this publication, please thank the advertisers you see on these eight pages. They made it possible. Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Top 500 countdown Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down. 170. “I Write the Songs” (1975) Barry Manilow Memory: Another song I instantly associate with Chicago’s AM powerhouse, WLS. Always thought it was interesting a member of the Beach Boys wrote it. 169. “Do You Believe in Love?” (1982) Huey Lewis and the News Memory: I’m not a big fan of the group, but how can you not sing along with this one? 168. “Waiting for a Star to Fall” (1988) Boy Meets Girl Memory: I could listen to this song 10 times in a row and not get tired of it.

Fun facts According to the 2010 census, Indian River County’s population was 138,028. Of that, the number of people in unincorporated areas of the county totaled 91,366 and the number of people in incorporated areas totaled 46,662. – Source: Indian River County
