LEMMON DROPS: Used Book Depot ready for its sixth move

Humanity and the Humane Society – operate thrift stores to support their missions. That’s basically the role of the Used Book Depot for Indian River County’s library system. Money generated by the Used Book Depot – which has been around more than 30 years – goes to Friends of the Library, which in turn provides financial support to the local library system. Last year, it generated $63,000 for Friends of the Library. After 12 years at its current location (1670 14th Avenue in Vero Beach), the Used Book Depot is moving to a new home about 12 blocks to the south. It hopes to reopen Nov. 21 at the new location – 492 Old Dixie Highway, Unit 102. It’s next to the Second Chance

This will be the sixth time the Used Book Depot has moved. Which is not a Russ Lemmon pleasant task when you’re talking about 22,000 to 25,000 books. Dawe says the condition of the current building prompted the move. There have been problems with the roof and the front door, among other things. The new building (2,100 square feet) has just 100 square feet more than the current building, but they’ll be saving $500 a month in rent, she said. The new building will have several more parking spaces, too. The Used Book Depot is staffed totally by volunteers. There are 55 volunteers, and they work 3-hour shifts to

If you’ve never been to the Used Book Depot, I highly recommend it. Book lovers could spend hours in there. Thanks to Paula Thomas for letting me know about the Vero Beach mention in the November issue of Southern Living magazine. The biggest surprise of the week? Geoff Moore is out as host of the morning show on 93.7 FM. Such is life in radio. Moore deserves credit for bringing stability to WGYL’s morning show. The Red Onion has closed its mainland restaurant (near the Indian River Medical Center). The sign on the door directed customers to the Red Onion on Ocean Drive. For more information the facility, check out the website (stouthousewhereartistscreate.org). Before every local election, political consultant Curtis Carpenter sends me his predictions. For the Vero Beach City Council race, he predicted Laura Moss would receive 3,562 votes. Her final vote tally: 3,562. In last week’s issue, I wrote about the Pelican Diner (and a dozen-plus restaurants in the county) being sued for violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The lawsuits were filed by what’s being called “serial plaintiffs.” Jeanne Gascoigne, 94, said she could hardly contain her anger after reading about the lawsuit. She said it was her experience the Pelican Diner couldn’t have been more accommodating to people with disabilities.

Top 500 countdown Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down. 173. “Love Train” (1972) O’Jays Memory: Before learning to drive, I listened to Chicago’s AM powerhouse, WLS, in my bedroom – and this song was a staple. 172. “Keep on Loving You” (1980) REO Speedwagon Memory: The band, popular in the Midwest in the 1970s, broke through nationally with this power ballad. 171. “Reason to Believe” (1971) Rod Stewart Memory: This song spent 41 weeks in Billboard’s “Hot 100” (the longest of any by the legendary singer). All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com
