PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: Poem (‘To Vero’) provides picture of life here in 1919 In their fair and sunny land. Days sped by, and yet I lingered, Saw the little hamlet grow. Passed one winter, then another, Far away from ice and snow. Pam Cooper

By Mary E. Springer, born in Indiana and died in Broward County. (Poem published in the St. Lucie County Tribune, April 22, 1919)

In a little town I halted In the land of fruit and flowers, Nestling by the Indian River, There I spent some happy hours. For the people made me welcome, Gave the glad and cordial hand; Bade me be at home among them

Saw the people from the northlands Stop to look, as I had done– Saw them spend their money gladly For some holding near the town. Saw the country bud and blossom As did Eden long ago, And the produce sown and garnered Made the banks to overflow. Orchards bending with their burden Of the great round globes of gold, Citrus fruit from the Indian River, Finest in the markets sold. And my life was calm and restful,

Gone was worry, fret and strife, Nervous fears allayed forever, In this sweetly simple life. Yet this is no place for laggards, One and all must do their best. If we use our brain and brawn, Nature here will do the rest. Want to know where it was I lingered, Found the rest my being south, Learned again the joy of living, And that worry brings you naught? Little Vero – child of effort, Vigorous, strong and growing great, All the people one big household, They who run may read its fate. Could not help but be a city; Could do naught but strength attain, While they make each stranger welcome, Bid one and all come back again.

Pam Cooper is the former supervisor of the Archive Center & Genealogy Department at the Indian River County main library. CFC1425952

Just off U.S. 1, there used to be a restaurant called Marvin Gardens. It has been gone several years now, but behind it there was a colony of cottages ... all painted white that used to be quaint little homes with a thriving small population. They were abandoned for years. I managed to photograph them before they were all destroyed last year.

LEMMON DROPS: Pressing the ‘pause’ button to give thanks Some rapid-fire, holiday-themed Lemmon Drops (many are repeats from previous Thanksgivings):

• I’m thankful to be living in Indian River County. I love the pace of life here. So glad we don’t have to compete in the “rat race.” I’m thankful for our beautiful weather, especially from November through May. There’s no better place to be. I’m thankful we avoided a direct hit by a hurricane for the second year in a row. I’m thankful there’s a height limit for buildings in Indian River County. It’s our insurance policy against becoming “another South Florida.” I’m thankful for all of the snowbirds who make their way here each year. They add a certain “spice” to the area. Most of the snowbirds I meet are appreciative and know how good they have it. I’m thankful that neither State Road 60 nor County Road 512 looks like U.S. 192 in Melbourne. (With each

passing year, though, the similarities increase.) I’m thankful Sebastian and Fellsmere are in Indian River County. When you visit each community, it’s like taking a step back in time. I’m thankful I’ve gotten to meet dozens of small-business owners during Russ Lemmon the past two years. Such quality people. John Malek, Joel Stout, Eric Behymer (and his uncle, Joe Fly), Mark Santangelo, Greg Hepler, Tiffany and Eric Barkwell, Brian Schauder, Jurgen Schwanitz, Chuck Cannon, Barbara and David Letts, Chad Leonard, Brian Cunningham, Tom and Beverly Lowther, Sammy Boksmati, Josh Binafif … I could go on and on. (They are the reason I ran the “Small Business Saturday” ad in this week’s issue.) I’m thankful Indian River County is home to roughly 16,000 military veterans. Thank you for your service. I’m thankful there is a Bob Evans restaurant in Indian

River County. As I always say, this is my connection to the Midwest. (Having spent the first 21 years of my life in Indiana, I’m a Midwesterner at heart.) I’m thankful there are no orange barrels currently on U.S. 1. I’m thankful Indian River County has three top-flight libraries and a great nonprofit in the Used Book Depot, which helps fund the libraries. I’m thankful sister publications Vero Beach 32963 and Vero News exist, because they provide competition for the Press Journal. I’d hate to see the content in the PJ if it didn’t have such formidable competition. I’m thankful there’s an organization like Impact 100 in Indian River County. So inspiring that 100 women contribute $1,000 for grants that help make this a better community. I’m thankful for Vision Plus, Treasure Coast Jewelers & Music, Sandpiper Pest Control, Lowther Funeral Home and Colkitt Air Conditioning for having an ad in all 163 issues of Lemmon Lines. I’m thankful for the 930 followers on Twitter and the

684 “likes” on Facebook. Some people scoff at the social media, but there’s no denying it has changed the way we communicate. President Donald Trump is Exhibit A. I’m thankful for the level of traffic in Indian River County. Most days, I drive from one end of the county to the other – and sometimes I do it more than once. I’m always befuddled when people complain about the traffic. I’m thankful for the 21 wonderful years my wife and I have had together. She was scared to death when I started this venture – after all, I left a secure job with good benefits at the Press Journal – but she trusted my instincts. I’m thankful so many readers have made Lemmon Lines a weekly habit. We couldn’t do it without you! I’m thankful for the advertisers in Lemmon Lines. If you enjoy reading this publication, please thank the advertisers you see on these eight pages. They made it possible. Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Overlooked cinematic gems As owner of a used DVD shop, I occasionally find fairly obscure movies that turn out to be quite good. Here are three of them:

Joe Carnahan) will find much to like with this one. Also stars Ed Helms, Brooklyn Decker, Jessica Alba, and Ray Liotta (with an awesome appearance by David Hasselhoff!). Also features Chris Pine, who is, • Bone Tomahawk (2015, R, directed by S. Craig oddly enough, not named in the credits. Zahler). Kurt Russell stars in this gritty western that • Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015, PG-13, delves into outright horror. In the Wild West town directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon). High school of Bright Hope, the settlers are besieged by a group student Greg (Thomas Mann), despite being a Mike Bushman of cave-dwelling cannibals. It’s down to four brave creative genius, just wants to maintain an air of men to try to save the day. Also stars Patrick Wilson, invisibility until he makes it out of high school. Matthew Fox, and Oscar nominee Richard Jenkins. This one Never standing out, never creating ripples. That all changes is sure to send chills down your spine! when his neighbor Rachel (Olivia Cooke) is diagnosed with • Stretch (2014, R, directed by Joe Carnahan). Stretch leukemia and their ensuing friendship, along with the help of (Patrick Wilson) is a down-on-his-luck limousine driver, his best friend Earl, force him to take an active part is life. A struggling to pay off his bookie, who bites off more than he poignant coming-of-age drama that is highly recommended. can chew in this over-the-top action comedy. Top 500 countdown Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the past few years, Lemmon Lines has been counting ‘em down. 16. “1979” (1996) Smashing Pumpkins Memory: I’d describe this as a “mesmerizing” song. That is, for the longest time, I couldn’t understand the lyrics, yet I listened to the song over and over again. Another example of the video elevating the status of the song. 15. “Peace of Mind” (1977) Boston Memory: To me, this is the “perfect” rock song. If you’ve followed this countdown, you know I love songs with powerful guitars – and this is definitely an “air guitar” classic. I’m really glad that Boston came along during my college years!

Fun facts Vero Beach High School’s football team headed into last week’s playoff game ranked 123rd in the nation, according to the website MaxPreps.com. Vero Beach (11-0 heading into the playoff game) was ranked No. 17 in Florida, according to MaxPreps.com. Heading into the season, the website ranked Vero Beach 43rd in the state and No. 734 nationally. – Source: MaxPreps.com

All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com
