be picking up. You can read more on page 56. And, if you feel inspired to join our Panel, please just drop me an email – I’d love to hear from you. Our cover story this month is Price’s, a real favourite of mine because they’re a company with

P24 such heritage – they started producing candles back in 1830 for goodness sake! Today they hold a Royal Warrant for Her Majesty the Queen. For a company with such a history behind them, they’re always looking forward and in this issue they talk about their new Fragrance range, consisting of 14 bright, on trend fragrances. I heartily recommend you read more about them on page 20 and head to their stand at Spring Fair. This issue really is jam-packed with new product. We have a comprehensive overview of the thousands of new products being launched at the show. And, putting this issue together I’ve really started to get excited about the new trends we’ll see coming through in spring/summer ’18 and beyond. elcome to the February issue of Gifts Today – our Spring Fair special! With Christmas and New Year sales firmly behind us, there’s no better time to dive headlong into buying season than with this essential show. I’m looking forward to visiting my second Spring Fair, along with my Ad Manager Mark Horsnell who will be visiting for the 12th time! There’s so much to take in, so many products to see and people to meet, that I’m considering taking a tip from John Lewis Gift and Candle Shop buyer Sara Allbright, who told me she and her team walk up and down every single aisle of every single Hall to ensure they don’t miss a thing. I hope you enjoy our exclusive interview with her on page 24 where she talks trends, economic uncertainty and the importance of reacting quickly to what’s selling - and what’s not. She was also incredibly generous in sharing her thoughts on how the small independent retailer can give the big department stores a run for their money when it comes to the customer experience. We also spoke to some movers and shakers in the gift industry to see what trends they predict will be big in 2018 – we covered everything from gender-neutral candles to the importance of personalisation. We also talked mermaids, llamas, flamingos and, of course, unicorns! This four-page Trade Talk special starts on page 46. Our friends in our Retailers’ Panel also spilt the beans on what they’ll be looking for at the shows – as well as sharing their own special survival tips. I’ve been making notes and am planning to stock up on plasters for sore feet and a new trolley case to carry all the brochures I’ll

was chosen because it helps encourage artistic expression and spiritual reflection – pretty useful in these times of economic uncertainty! Looking around, I discovered this shade is already popping up everywhere on all sorts of gifts, and it’s a great starting point if you’re looking to instantly update your offering. You can discover more on page 36. As we go to press, the finalists at GOTY have been announced. I was thrilled to be one of the judges in the awards and can’t wait to see them handed out on the Sunday night of Spring Fair where the brilliant impressionist Rory Bremner is hosting proceedings. Check out who has made the finals in various categories on page 18. I hope you enjoy the issue and find it useful in planning your buying season. As for me, it’s time to hunt out those comfy shoes and business cards. My Spring Fair diary is already filling up fast and I look forward to seeing as many of you at the show as possible. Happy buying and selling! Have a great month, Sally

Raise a toast to Ashleigh & Burwood’s 25 years This is a special year for home fragrance experts Ashleigh & Burwood, marking 25 years since the founding of the company by father and son John and Andrew Nettleton. From humble beginnings at the family kitchen table Ashleigh & Burwood has grown to become the largest independently-owned UK home fragrance company. With the same passion for fragrance that the company was founded upon still firmly at the heart of all they do, Ashleigh & Burwood are looking forward to what their next 25 years will hold. To celebrate, they are releasing a special edition of their Sparkling Prosecco Lamp Fragrance, a festive favourite back by popular demand. The anniversary bottles will feature a swing tag encouraging customers to ‘raise a toast to 25 years’ with Ashleigh & Burwood.

BTHA gives the Gift of Play to Parliament The British Toy and Hobby Association (BTHA) held its first Parliamentary reception in the House of Commons under its Giving the Gift of Play campaign. The event was a celebration of Britain’s exciting and innovative toy manufacturing sector and the various aspects of the BTHA’s work on play that its members and the industry work on all year round. Giving the Gift of Play was a cross-party event sponsored by Andrea Leadsom MP. As part of the theme, all 35 attending MPs at the event had the opportunity to select a children’s charity within their constituency to receive a selection of toys for Christmas, donated courtesy of the BTHA and its members. The theme this year celebrated the diversity of work of the industry. The BTHA plans to repeat the event, with an emphasis on issues the industry needs political support for.

If you have a vested interest in the home and gift industry, a visit to this year’s British Craft Trade Fair should be on your ‘must go’ list! The fair represents the largest collective of British craft and design in the world, with almost 500 makers represented. It is a beautifully-presented trade fair and if, you have a sales outlet, it is a brilliant place to view, select and order some of the UK’s best handmade home and giftware. Established over 40 years ago the fair has gone from strength to strength over the years and is a firm favourite with buyers from the home, gift, stationery, fashion and greeting card sectors. British-made has enjoyed a huge resurgence in popularity with consumers over recent years and there have been several government-backed marketing

campaigns around ‘Made in Britain’ that have helped the cause. BCTF brings together the very best of created British art and design and helps the buyer to make an informed choice on ‘Buying British.’ Margeret Bunn has developed and managed the fair over the last 12 years and she is very proud of her exhibitors who, as she says, in many cases represent many of tomorrow’s antiques and collectables. Margeret says: ‘British craft and design has over recent years come of age and is currently very cool with consumers wanting to buy home and gift that is handmade with integrity and passion. Our exhibitors have also become far more professional and much of this has come about as a direct result of our mentoring programme ensuring that exhibitors are ready to supply trade buyers.’ Whatever your involvement within the industry, it’s worth paying a visit to Harrogate this spring. Merchandising solutions

Price’s have created brand new POS packages to drive customer attention as well as great-looking merchandising stands so you can be sure the range will look and sell great in store.

Meet the designer

Nicky Dawson shares the story behind the design of the new range… What’s your history with Price’s Candles? I have been at Price’s now for just over 18 months after almost 20 years in the greeting card and gift industry. Being at Price’s has allowed me to transfer all my skills and knowledge to this fantastic industry.

What were the inspirations behind the images you created for your Fragrance range? We wanted to create a range for a new Price’s customer with a younger demographic, so I focused on bright, vibrant images and colours that would still reflect our photographic style - giving a contemporary twist with a solid colour that will brighten up any home.

I have with the whole collection.

How did you create the images for the packaging? There was a lot of time spent searching for the perfect images to suit each h product d t so th the packaging k i ‘oozed’ fragrance even before smelling it. A few tweaks in editing and the magic came alive.

What did you want to bring to the collection with the artwork?

Do you have a favourite and why?

The collection needed to ‘marry’ together and frame the range by using the use of lines and blocks alongside the photos that I have chosen. Also once the products are in your home I wanted to create the same feel with the one product as

My favourite smell is the coconut as it reminds me of my travels on beautiful beaches, and my favourite design has to be Spa Moments as it makes me feel like I’ve just been for a massage after a hard day in the office.

Retail Interview - John Lewis

Survive & thrive With John Lewis announcing a 3.1% increase in same-store sales in the six weeks to December 30, Sally Norton caught up with Sara Allbright, buyer for Gifts and Candle Shop, to discover how she navigated the Christmas period and what plans her department has for 2018.

F

Sara Allbright

rom jittery customers to a volatile economic environment, many feel that trading in the year ahead will be bumpy, to say the least. However, when employee-owned John Lewis posted rising sales over the Christmas period, with Black Friday its most successful sales day in its history, it becomes clear that it is possible for sales to grow. True, their profits will be dented by higher costs incurred because of the Brexit-hit pound and by increased pressure on margins as the company keeps prices low to compete with rivals, but it’s clear that the team is doing something right. In an exclusive interview with Gifts Today, buyer Sara Allbright discusses the particular challenges facing her department and how, when it comes to in-store shopping, experience is everything. Sara, can you give us an idea of your responsibilities? I head up a team of nine – five are buying-related, four are merchandising. I source and develop product that fits into the Gift and Candle Shop categories. Gift is quite a wide category in a way because a gift can be so many different things, from jewellery boxes to gift experiences to personalised product, and lots more besides.

24 gifts today

I’m currently buying for 49 stores, though this will be 50 when we open in Westfield in March – it’s an extension to the White City development. Obviously, there’s online as well, and all our international wholesale. Do you have a typical customer? No, it’s impossible to pigeonhole customers like that because gifting is such a wide thing, and you get quite a diverse range of people. Generally, the assumption is that gift buying is always a more female-led thing, but then you come into the last few weeks of Christmas and there’s always a real balance of people looking for stuff. Rather than a typical customer, I’d say it’s more of a typical customer per

‘The biggest challenge is that no-one knows what the year holds’

range, brand or product. It’s about trying to give options to everyone; say, if someone’s buying Christmas gifts for a family, it’s about having gifts to cover quite a few of their recipients. Where are sales strong? In Candle Shop, the biggest growth is around what we call the premium brands, meaning anything from Neom upwards in terms of price. For John Lewis, it’s

about quality. Home fragrance are products you actually use and, once you find a brand that you like, then that encourages repeat purchase - and I think that’s where you get the growth. John Lewis offers candles from £10 to more than £300 and, pricewise we do well across the board, but there was definitely more growth at the premium end in 2017. Brands like Cire Trudon did really well for us. We also always see strong trade on reed diffusers, because our customers trend to be quite practical. We also had great success with our very first Home Fragrance Advent Calendar, basing it on quite a few fragrances we had within our own brand Christmas range. It worked really well for us. For general gifts it depends on what the strong licence is at the time, and generally about offering a good mix of style. For instance, within the collections we try to make sure we’re offering, say, something classic, something floral, animal designs and so on. We definitely noticed a real surge towards board games and puzzles, perhaps as an alternative to gifts today 25

Retail Interview - John Lewis

technology. It might not be very trendy to say you like puzzles but people seem to like the mindfulness of doing a puzzle or playing a board game. We mainly work with Gibsons and Ravensburger and some Christmasspecific ones proved really popular.

‘As we head towards summer, that tropical vibe will be coming through, with lots of palms and plants, greenery and ferns’ What trends have you identified for 2018? When it comes to home fragrance, there’s a move away from vessels that are simply clear glass – statement vessels are definitely coming through. We’re doing some ceramic ones, painted glass, vessels that are a design statement in themselves. The Luna range from Stoneglow, for instance, has marbled packaging which is right on trend. When it comes to candles, we always change into fresher lighter scents at

this time of year. As well as introducing some of our own brands this year, we’re launching a new range with Heyland & Whittle called Solutions that is based around alleviating bad smells in the home – kitchen smells, pet smells and so on. I think games and puzzles will continue to be big, and we’ll offer summer outdoor games as part of the ‘summer party’ story that we tend to do at this time of year. Mermaids and gin-related gifts will continue to be strong – and I don’t think the unicorn will go away just yet! Flamingos look set to be popular, along with toucans. As we head towards summer, that tropical vibe will be coming through, with lots of palms and plants, greenery and ferns. Particular challenges for 2018? The biggest challenge is that no one knows what the year holds. But that really is the essence of trading. I think it’s more important than ever to be able to react to things. Although we plan a season at a time, week by week we look at what’s working, what’s not, what we need to change. There used to be a time when you would wait, say, six months and then make changes – it’s much more proactive now. How do your bricks and mortar stores deal with online competition? Of course we have the luxury of having both. Online is still really important to us, and things like ‘click and collect’ are very popular. When it comes to the store, it’s more than just the product. We’ve done a lot around all the catering in-store, meaning that visiting the shop now is more of a day out. Then we offer experiences instore. For instance, we had a calligrapher at Ted Baker personalising gift tags and writing beautiful things in notebooks for people. It’s based on the product, but offering something a bit more. Does most of your inspiration come from shows? We try to divvy up all the shows between the team. As well as the key UK shows, we visit Maison et Objet and Ambiente. It can be challenging but we do try to get someone from the team to everything if we can.

26 gifts today

Generally, we don’t book appointments in any way shape or form, otherwise you spend your life just going from hall to hall. The reason we go to shows is to see people we don’t know already, which means you can’t make an appointment with them anyway. I tend to walk up and down each aisle in every hall, being methodical so I don’t miss anything. I also find lots these days from looking online. Sites like notonthehighstreet highlight their new sellers and from time to time we have a scoot through. We also do a lot with the great British Exchange, which is good as it means smaller suppliers can work directly with us. The Giftware Association is useful, too, especially with Gift of the Year and their Meet the Buyer events. You get to see the stuff that’s out there and, even if it’s not anything particularly progressive, at least you’ve seen it and got an idea of what’s happening. What advice would you give to the independent gift retailer? I think it’s a matter of deciding your point of view, say something very retro or Scandi, and then really focusing on that. Make a clear statement to

your customers what the shop is about. Smaller stores can win on the personal experience, whether it’s doing some nice gift wrapping at the till, or spending a bit more time on the customer experience.

Pretty paper Museums & Galleries Hall 3, Stand P17 Museums & Galleries has a box full of spectacular delights for 2018. Truly, the company has reached far and deep to bring customers a selection, which should please all fans of the fine art based company’s card and gift stationery products. There are two major card range launches for 2018. First up, M&G is hugely proud to announce a ground-breaking partnership with Transport for London, with a range of 24 branded cards launching in January and gift stationery products to follow later in the year. The card collection draws on the Transport Museum’s iconic and extensive collection of transport posters, exploring the sights, locations, and festivals of the great metropolis of London and the world’ s oldest metropolitan transport system. TfL’s design heritage extends to its world-famous tube map, roundel logo, typeface, station names, tube line colours, and seat moquettes - not to mention the iconic Routemaster busses. This year the Natural History Museum released an innovative and eye-catching digital collection re-imagining its wondrous exhibits for the contemporary market place. Strikingly graphic and very ‘now’, M&G has translated this stunning look onto capsule collections of Everyday and Christmas cards and boxed notelets, journals, notebooks, gift wrap, magnetic memo pads, and bookmarks, all available from January. M&G’s long relationship with the British Museum has for 2018 blossomed forth into a full-blown branded stationery collection. The world-renowned museum’s branding is distinctive, bold, and classic, making for a stylish collection focusing on bringing out the hidden commercial gems from the museum’s archives. Products include boxed everyday notelets, journals, bookmarks, gift wrap and a magnetic memo pad. 2018 is the 60th anniversary of Paddington Bear, and M&G celebrates by launching a collection of cards and stationery products featuring original illustrator Peggy Fortnum’s classic artwork for author Edward Bond’s iconic character bear. Cards feature in M&G’s Illustrators range, accompanied by gift wrap, a notebook, magnetic memo pad, boxed notelets and bookmarks. There is also a Christmas theme box of Paddington Bear’s winter frolics. Also in its Illustrators card range, M&G releases the hugely loved Quentin Blake illustrations from the Roald Dahl children’s books, and Dick Bruna’s iconic Miffy. The outstanding new additions raise 30 gifts today

this already long-running and best-selling M&G card range onto another level. M&G is introducing a new-format journal in the spring, especially designed to coordinate with the company›s new gift stationery spinner. The journals’ covers are soft and textured, featuring foil and other special finishes. The format will showcase designs from M&G partners Matthew Williamson, V&A, British Museum, and the Natural History Museum. The hugely successful 2017 launch of gift ballpoint pens for the V&A is for 2018 accompanied by pens for Matthew Williamson. Matthew’s pens feature gold-effect metallic trim gilding his inimitable and spectacular printed patterns. These pens will be the must-have fashion accessory for 2018. M&G have extensively added-to and refreshed all existing card ranges, including the V&A’s card range, launched only eight months ago. Highlights include delights from the British Library and distinctive British designer Cressida Bell, whose first Christmas collection for M&G was widely praised and made a big impact in sales. Other notable refreshes include Art of Print and the best-selling Mezzanine, which have been rejuvenated with fresh and contemporary looks from new artists as well as existing stars.

Wonderful warriors

Magic mugs

Mandarin Arts Ltd

Dunoon

Hall 4 Stand F70

Hall 9, Stand F18

To coincide with the arrival of an exhibition of terracotta warriors in the UK for the first time in 10 years, Mandarin Arts will be bringing their own collection to this year’s Spring Fair. Varying in stature from pocketsize right up to life-size, the enigmatic figures that guarded Emperor Qin Shi Huang’s tomb for some 2000 years continue to fascinate and amaze people the world over. Few of us have an emperor’s wealth to lavish on an army of warriors, but take a look at this display and 2018 could be the year for the terracotta army to enhance and protect your wealth. Throughout the dynasties, China has continued to excel in ceramic production and you’ll find many more great examples dotted around Mandarin Arts’ stand. With richly-coloured and contemporary designs, you’ll find new additions to their range of elegant porcelain table lamps on display for the first time alongside many more new lines of both practical and decorative plates, bowls, vases and jars.

Dunoon have two big launches at Spring Fair. The Hannah Longmuir Collection offers a set of twelve designs on Dunoon’s Orkney fine bone china shape. These are by an artist who is new to Dunoon, Hannah Longmuir. The designs feature very simple studies of wild animals, birds and insects drawn in Hannah’s inimitable style and coloured with delicate watercolour washes. Each mug has its own endearing subject, including blue tits, hedgehogs and robins, to name but a few. The Slapdash! Range offers a set of three designs on both of Dunoon’s Cairngorm and Lomond shapes. These colourful patterns are made up of expressive colour themed watercolour dashes and are sure to be a favourite. They are designed by Caroline Bessey and made in fine bone china in the heart of Staffordshire.

The family firm’s stand will be bristling with their 700+ strong range of walking sticks, seat sticks and umbrellas. New products will include orthopaedic handle canes fitted to shafts in the company’s bestselling black floral pattern. Managing Director Charlotte 32 gifts today

Gillan explains: ‘Many people suffer from hand problems such as arthritis and rheumatism that mean they cannot easily grip a standard walking stick handle. Generally, sticks with orthopaedic handles are quite plain in appearance, so we thought we would marry the supportive handles with a pretty pattern, which we are sure will sell very well.’ Other new products include a new colour of grey in the beech derby walking sticks range, adjustable sticks aimed at men and assorted cane clips and specialist rubber ferrules to make life easier and more comfortable for stick users.

Get on trend Puckator Hall 4, Stand C10-D11 2018 is upon us and with it brings a whole year of exciting new trends! Over at Puckator, they will be kick starting the ‘new year new me’ hype with their hot off the press ‘Gym & Her’ range. We all know that once January hits you can’t move for health-related products and Puckator really wanted to create some inspiring and exciting fitness accessories. There’s been a real shift in the graphic community towards 80s inspired bold prints and pastel shades, probably due in no small part to the overwhelming success of the 1980s set Stranger Things. Puckator have tried to incorporate the classic styling of 80s TV giants such as ‘The Fresh Prince of Bell Air’ and ‘Saved by the Bell’, integrating them with motivational yet humorous slogans. It’s time to stick on that Jane Fonda workout, dust off those leg warmers and get into the 80s spirit! Another super hot trend the company saw emerging in the last quarter of 2017, that is sure to be huge coming into the New Year, is mermaids. Anything iridescent, pearlescent and scaled is sure to go down a storm in 2018. Big bold graduated colours, that shouldn’t work but really do, are the aim of the game here. There have been many examples on the fashion catwalks of brash clashing prints and loud overlaid patterns; these ideas really lend themselves to the mysterious underwater depths of this mermaid theme. Finally Kawaii culture is fast becoming one of Puckator’s favourite themes for 2018. Kawaii is Japanese for cute and this fashion culture is emerging straight from the streets of Harajuku, Tokyo, where they live and breathe the Kawaii lifestyle. This is a trend that sees cute creations adorned with adorable features to bring life and character to everyday subjects. The new range centres on charming weather repeats and delightfully summery ice creams. Typical features of this Japanese inspired craze include pastel colours, bold outlines, minimal features and all things cute. Puckator are continuing to grow and mature as a company and are really focusing on making design and innovation in the giftware world their main aim.

Realm of the Dragons Netherwood Collectables Hall 4 Stand D73 Netherwood Collectables presents an exciting new range of British designed hand painted dragons featuring ice, fire, sun and moon. Netherwood Collectables was created originally by father and son duo Graham and Charles Hughes in 2009. Until then Graham had been chairman and Managing Director of ’The Tudor Mint’, trade name of The Watson Group Limited with its hugely successful fantasy ranges of ‘Myth and Magic’ and ‘Land of the Dragons’. Two years ago, Graham semi-retired and Charles took over as Managing Director, Charles created various collectable items and at the Spring Fair last year was approached by some of the Tudor Mint’s old customers with a request to create a range of good quality but affordable dragon pieces. Hence ‘Realm of the Dragons’ was born. There are twenty dragons in the range featured in four styles: Ice, Fire, Sun and Moon. All the pieces are beautifully hand painted and all come gift boxed in attractive red and gold packaging. Realm of the Dragons is in stock now.

Trade talk

Gifts Today loves to hear your views.

Spring Fair, trends and new products – it’s all up for discussion with some leading gift companies this month.

Sarah Watmore Miss Milly Why is Spring Fair important to you as a company? Spring Fair is our biggest show of the year, both in terms of orders and the size

Perry Simmons MD, Stoneglow Why is Spring Fair important to you as a company? It is our most important trade show in the calendar. It reaches out to international and domestic customers. It is such a great platform to showcase our ranges and we get the opportunity to catch up with many of our customers, and introduce ourselves to many new clients. This year we are in the Summer House, so it’s a massive trade show for us.

Big trends for 2018? Over-sized earrings are set to be huge – if you saw Tess Daly’s enormous hoops on the Strictly final, you’ll know what we’re talking about. The big fragrance trends will be gender-neutral, unisex fragrances for the home; sophisticated aromas built around herbal, earthy, with exotic woody notes such as vetiver, amber, cypress. Charlotte Gillan MD, Classic Canes Why is Spring Fair important to you as a company? The Spring Fair is important to us as a major means of meeting new stockists, both from the UK and abroad. Walking sticks are very tactile items so it is a great opportunity for them to come to life when buyers touch and hold them.

Big trends for 2018? Walking stick trends will be towards the artistic and the contemporary this year. We have lots of beautiful new painterly patterns in the pipeline as well as canes in more modern materials and finishes. As the baby-boomer generation are fast becoming walking stick users, designs have to keep up with the tastes of a different generation.

What products/ranges will you be encouraging retailers to look at on your stand? Retailers visiting our stand will be encouraged to consider folding walking sticks, which are increasingly popular due to their convenience and the wide range of colours and patterns we have available. Being easily height-adjustable they make excellent gifts, and are much easier to gift wrap and post than a standard walking stick, too.

Any special survival tips for the Fair? I would always recommend comfortable shoes and a small wheeled suitcase for all the catalogues you collect. Also be very careful to remember your business cards; not only do they save you time on each stand but, along with how smartly you are dressed, they give would-be suppliers clear signals about how serious your business is. Important to remember if you are hoping for credit

Stephen Illingworth Laurence Whiting National Sales Manager, Price’s Patent Candles Ltd Why is Spring Fair important to you as a company? Spring Fair is our most important show of the year. It kickstarts the buying and lays out the plans for the year ahead. It’s great to catch up with our customers so soon after Christmas while it’s still fresh in everyone’s mind. We’re really grateful to everyone who takes the time and effort to come and see us. We realise it’s tougher than ever to get time away from the business to come to the trade shows.

Big trends for 2018? The last few years have been dominated by pastel colours, whereas 2017 and 2018 has moved towards bolder, brighter options. Price’s have always produced more realistic fragrances as standard and this is now bearing fruit. Customers are keen to know that the fragrance is well balanced and high quality, whilst focusing on true-to-life perfumes.

Product Development Director, Widdop and Co Why is the Spring Fair important to you as a Company? As well as new and export customers who are vitally important to us, it’s a fantastic opportunity to meet up with our existing customers who are looking for a New Year boost to their business.

Big trends for 2018? Inspiring messages and encouragement are the order of the day providing a much needed breath of fresh air. The celebration of special occasions changing them into memorable events via journals, hand engraved tankards or a personalised baby gift is another big trend. New colours and styles are entering the giftware arena inspired by fashion, home accessories: copper and blush, neons, vintage Americana, Moroccan inspired homewares, and soft greys and sage green as featured in our Vicky Yorke collection all capture the key trends of 2018. And finally who could forget the unicorns, mermaids and llamas?

What products/ranges will you be encouraging retailers to look at on your stand?

Our key focus of the Spring Fair will be our brand new fragrance range. Consisting of 14 initial fragrances, these candles and diffusers are bright and on-trend, with strong, quality fragrances and burn.

Highlights from our brands include The Happy News, an inspirational gift collection aimed at the trend-led modern gift or card department. The Aromatherapy Company’s range of fragranced hand cream, lotion and diffusers are bursting with essential oils. And not forgetting our bestselling wedding and baby brands, Amore and Bambino, that in addition to greeting cards and gift bags have grown to include additional lines for hen parties, the bridal party and baby showers.

Comfortable shoes are a must to survive of course! We don’t get a lot of time off the stand to explore all food options but we found a great new cheese toastie café at Autumn Fair which we’re hoping reappears in February!

Plan ahead – whatever you do, don’t just show up at the Fair expecting to see it all. Use the Little Black Book to decide who you must see and work out how you are going to get round those stands. Wear flat shoes and stay hydrated.

Steven Russell Senior Marketing Executive, Jumbo Why is Spring Fair important to you as a company? We are returning to Spring Fair this year, because we see the value it brings to us in maintaining our growth in the adult puzzles and accessories market and continuing to be a market leader. It’s the ideal show for us to meet and present to existing and new Independent customers.

Big trends for 2018? We strongly believe that the growth in adult puzzles seen in 2017 will carry on throughout 2018 and visitors to our stand will be able to see how important this category is for us.

What products/ranges will you be encouraging retailers to look at on your stand? We will have over 65 new Adult jigsaw puzzles across varying piece counts from 200XL to 1,500-pieces that we are launching for spring/summer across our Wasgij, Falcon deluxe, Premium Puzzle Collection and Jan van

Any special survival tips for the Fair? There’s surely only one choice at the NEC for lunch and to help you survive the long days – Subway!

Cara Beech New Product Manager, Personalised Memento Company

Monique Scott MD, Groovy Why is Spring Fair important to you as a company? The NEC gives us a chance to present new lines for 2018 and discuss exclusive options with our customers. It’s a showcase for what we can develop and also gives us new introductions for those that haven’t met us before.

Big trends for 2018? Movie licences seem to be stronger than ever and Disney and Warner Bros seem to be taking over everything. Harry Potter, Star Wars and Justice League show how far this area has developed. They suit adults and kids and are so exciting to watch. Our products can be used every day but help people remember the fun and design in the movies. Why not wear a bathrobe with matching slippers and think you are a Jedi Knight?!

What products/ranges will you be encouraging retailers to look at on your stand?

Why is Spring Fair important to you as a company? Spring Fair also allows us to showcase our best-selling products and ranges, giving visitors the chance to see products in the flesh and decide what products will suit their business best. It’s also a great opportunity for us to demonstrate how personalised gifts can work for a variety of business types.

Big trends for 2018? The recent trend for pugs and cats have created a demand for humorous animal and pet gifts, which are set to grow in popularity during 2018. Our licensed Rachael Hale range fits the bill for this trend and has something for all pet lovers. As well as our new Rachael Hale Valentine’s Day gifts, we will soon be launching new designs from this licence, for key gifting occasions throughout the year, such as Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Llamas/alpacas are set to be the next big thing. Our newly launched llama range uses bright colours and striking artwork elements, which ensures these fun and funky creatures will become a must-have gift for him, her and the home.

Groovy has an amazing collection of bathrobes and slippers in all the current movie greats. We have fantastic handbags in Harry Potter and lighting across all licences. All the items are designed by our in-house design team, so originality and quality are key. You can wear a Darth Vader bathrobe and make the breathing noise through a sound chip; now that’s worth a look at!

Pace yourself! There’s so much to see, so it’s important to take your time, plan carefully and take everything in.

We’ve expanded our range of personalised unicorn products quite considerably in the last six months. New products include our unicorn-shaped money box and brand new Baby Unicorn collection, which is perfect for babies and toddlers.

Jocelyne Royou-Roznowski D&J Glassware Why is Spring Fair important to you as a company? It gives us the opportunity to engage with many customers over a short period of time: this is so useful to gain valuable feedback about our products.

Any special survival tips for the Fair? Products that are well made, represent great value for money and make people happy. We have noticed a renewed interest in the handcrafted nature of our glassware. Given the uncertain times at present, many people will be reluctant to move house and so will look to enhancing their existing homes. Any products that fulfil this purpose will be popular in 2018.

What products/ranges will you be encouraging retailers to look at on your stand?

We encourage retailers to look at the quality of our products. No matter how good an image is, nothing compares to seeing a product ‘in the flesh’. Our home fragrance collections are growing and the demand for our products is growing, too. Retailers will have the opportunity to smell the gorgeous fragrances for themselves.

Any special survival tips for the Fair? Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Seems obvious, but as I ended up in casualty due to dehydration at a show last Autumn, you can never be told too many times.

Tabi Marsh Papilio at Heritage, Thornbury, Bristol Are you planning to attend Spring Fair – and why?

Any survival tips you can share when attending such a big show?

Yes, I am. The ability to see so many suppliers in one go is invaluable, as is seeing the products in person. Reps and agents can’t carry everything and it’s not possible to properly see quality and colour on an iPad. I also appreciate having a few days solely focused on buying and planning, it’s a very different feel to the rest of the year when it’s being fitted in with everything else that comes with running a business.

Aside from the usual of wearing comfortable shoes, I do find it’s important to pace myself. I spend the first day just scoping out the most relevant halls to get a general idea of colours and trends before then placing orders from day two. This gives me the evening of day one to reflect on what I’ve seen and how it will best fit into my shop and meet my customers’ needs.

Any other shows you’re planning to attend early in the year? I’ll be at Top Drawer, I’ve found some great Greeting Cards companies there as many smaller companies attend.

Who are your must-visit companies? I always pop onto the Rodney Holman stand as it’s great to see all the jewellery out in one place. Voyage Maison is an important stand to visit in order to get a proper idea of colours and for the chance to actually sit in the furniture. Similarly, Artko and Art Marketing as photos never do justice to artwork.

Are you planning to attend Spring Fair – and why? I hope to get down to the Spring Fair, but it’s my Mum’s 60th Birthday and will be heading up to Aberdeen first that weekend!

Any survival tips you can share when attending such a big show? Wear flat shoes (bring a plaster or two in your bag!) and come armed with which suppliers you want to see and where their stands are located – this saves so much time as Spring Fair is vast.

Any other shows you’re planning to attend early in the year? I will be heading to Glasgow for the Scotland’s Trade Fair Spring where I am a judge for the ‘Product Awards’ and I can’t wait to see what new gifts are coming forward for 2018.

Who are your must-visit companies? I will be visiting my suppliers who exhibit at these trade fairs, the likes of Widdop & Co, White Cotton Cards, Scott Inness, Stoneglow Candles to name but a few. It’s lovely to see their gift offering for the New Year in the flesh and see what trends are coming through.

What will you be looking for? New gifts and cards which are colourful, a good price point for our customer and with an emphasis on designed/Made in the UK.

Any trends you’re hoping to buy into? I will have to wait and see what catches my eye!

Dougal & Lesley Philip New Hopetoun Gardens, Broxburn Are you planning to attend Spring Fair – and why?

Kevin Bellwood Love Roobarb, Bridgnorth, Shropshire Are you planning to attend Spring Fair – and why? Yes of course we are. As a retailer you have attend this trade show, whether you’re buying or not from the event. It’s the biggest show in the UK and it’s good to take a temperature gauge of the business from people you meet, both suppliers and fellow retailers. It’s also good to see your suppliers face to face and for them to put a face to the company they supply. We also enjoy going because the show puts you in optimistic mood for the coming season after a cold, dark January and for you to plan and further impart that optimism and excitement to your customers.

Any survival tips you can share when attending such a big show?

Yes, we are attending. Having put Christmas to bed at Harrogate in January, we are ready to move on with our general gift offering for the spring and early summer. Once we get really busy with gardening from March onwards, the gift department needs to be set up ready as it can’t demand too much attention for the next three months.

Any survival tips you can share when attending such a big show? Pre-show planning is a must. Lesley makes a plan (she is the organised one in our buying team of two) of who she must see in each hall, who she would be interested in seeing if we have the time and then we hope to pick up a few new companies that we happen upon in our progression through the halls – sometimes led to these by an advert or a new product listing.

Any other shows you’re planning to attend early in the year? Harrogate for Christmas 2018 and the Scottish gift fair in Glasgow as it’s an easy show to digest locally.

Who are your must-visit companies?

Wear sensible shoes. Your feet will be throbbing after a few hours pounding the miles of product. Also don’t forget your trolley case to carry all the heavy brochures, they can break your back in two. You could also put your sandwiches and flask in there, too.

The companies that we buy most from during the year in order to see what direction they are moving in, and what’s new and the opportunity to touchy feel their products which is what our customers do during their instore experience. These include Junction 18, Gisella Graham, Earth Squared, Quintessential, Burgon & Ball, Fairyglass, SSP, Wax Lyrical, Heaven Sends, RFB Stone, Nova Leathers, Really Good, House of Marbles….

Any other shows you’re planning to attend early in the year?

What will you be looking for?

As we sell fashion in our shops as well as lifestyle gifts, we attend the fashion trade shows like Moda and Pure. We are also planning to attend many shows abroad this year to keep us ahead of the game.

Who are your must-visit companies? We like to visit the newbies and up-and-coming companies as there is maybe a treat waiting there for you that no one else will have. That little something that fits your shop and gets your customers talking about you.

What will you be looking for? Again looking for that ‘something different’ element. Until you get looking and exploring you never know what is there waiting for you. And it may be at the Spring Fair.

Any trends you’re hoping to buy into? We try to steer away from trends or our shop tends to look the same as everyone else’s. Every shop full of shiny gold and silver pineapples and pink flamingoes isn’t a good thing and doesn’t do anyone any favours. So whilst we keep an eye on trends and are aware of them, we don’t go there.

Something that appeals to us as buyers and that is well designed, good value and fits into our price pointed ranges that our customers wouldn’t be surprised to see amongst our offering.

Any trends you’re hoping to buy into? Always paying attention to passing trends that we should move on from and, as a result, keen to be exposed to new trends. Like our customers we really only like moving gently into a new trend and are happy to follow it once we see it appearing in lifestyle magazines or it really appeals to us as buyers and believe that our customers might be attracted as well..

It’s all about the fragrance…. Melt Hall 6, Stand R10 With a passion for hot wax and fine fragrance, melt have been creating candles of exceptional quality since 1999. Fragrance is known for turning your mood and creating the right ambience in your surroundings – and melt’s preferred choice is always elegant, sophisticated, a tad refined, confident and slightly sexy – or as some splendid newspaper of note said ‘Recherché’. They specialise in producing hand-made, fine fragrance candles of fabulous quality and it is their willingness to step out of the conventional fragrance arena, in order to seek out more unusual perfume combinations for which they are now known. They have worked hard to source raw materials locally and over 93% of ingredients and packaging comes from Lancashire companies with the balance being from the UK. All of their candles are hand poured and can take up to 36 hours to produce – and working with molten waxes ensures the candle is fragranced throughout. Melt’s range has now grown to include 33 unique fine fragrances. Each range consists of six candle sizes. Three pillar and three container candles with burns times from 22 hours up to 160 hours.

Scent stories Ashleigh & Burwood Hall 4, Stand B10-C11 Wild Things After a hugely successful launch last season with six colourful, collectable designs by designer Sumitta Spencer-Townson, Ashleigh & Burwood’s luxury Wild Things collection introduces three new unique designs for spring/summer 18. Bright, bold and bursting with vibrant colour, the three new designs feature exotic koi, graceful zebra and playful toucans on ceramic vessels topped with elegant gold lids. • Don’t Be Koi: A rich tapestry of heady jasmine, lush narcissus and sensuous lily envelops the air, woven with sparkling citrus notes of lemon and orange and dusted with musk. • I Zee You, Baby: Through a veil of blushing, rosy petals, a well-travelled zebra displays her signature stripes. • Toucan Play That Game: A flock of bright-beaked toucans rise from lush fruit trees, filling the air with the rich, refreshing scent of sun kissed mango, juicy guava and tangy mandarin.

Fresh and floral new scents for spring This season, two brand new fragrances have been skillfully crafted for the Artistry Collection, inspired by the creativity of fragrance design. In the Artistry Collection’s signature style, the new additions are paired with in-house designer Philippa Steele’s unique hand-illustrated artwork on the collection’s creative packaging. • The fruity, floral scent of Pear Blossom is ideal for bringing the sunlit happiness of spring into the home. A welcoming and uplifting fragrance for the hall, lounge or bedroom. • Infuse the home with the invigorating atmosphere of the seaside. t wasn’t so long ago that Xystos was known only as the thriving supplier of some of America’s bestknown candles. But as the result of a conscious move two and a half years ago to become the UK’s number one bath and body distributor, the company is now also the ‘go to’ provider of some of the country’s leading personal care products. Visitors will be able to experience the best of its British and US brands which will sit side-by-side in the Xystos Flame and Fragrance one-stop shop in Hall 4. Director Tom Sykes explains that, while continuing to be a leading player in the wax market with famous names such as WoodWick and Village Candle – ‘we haven’t taken our foot off the gas there’ – much of the company’s growth is now with garden centres, and ‘bath and body is the cornerstone of that business as far as gifting is concerned’. Having subsequently added the distribution of the Woods of Windsor, Baylis & Harding and Di Palomo brands to that of The Naked Bee, it would be difficult to deny that the company has achieved its ambition to become the leading provider of personal care products. Comments Tom: ‘Baylis

& Harding has proved to be a phenomenal addition to our portfolio. Never before have we taken on the distribution of products that are supported by so much marketing – and the brand awareness is second to none in the category.’ The latest Xystos partnership is with another bath and body supplier, Di Palomo, which he describes as ‘a very commercial brand’ with good distribution backed by strong marketing and product development. The company continues to win admirers with a range of appealingly presented products such as Black Cherry, Wild Fig & Grape, Orange Blossom with Wild Honey & Olive, and White Grape with Aloe. Xystos recently launched a bath and body Gardeners Range from Woods of Windsor, which is ideal for gifting and self-purchase. Additionally, Xystos has introduced the new Ayr Gifting Range from Woods of Windsor, which complements the existing English Heritage Home Fragrance Collection and the Floral Fragrances Collection. The various ranges from WoodWick continue to lead the flame and fragrance charge, while the company’s Cello melt burners have added another dimension to the success story that sees the company go from strength to strength. Among the Village Candle limited editions. Urban Nights has scents of fresh sage, patchouli and a touch of vanilla, while Forest Hike comprises rainforest moss, juniper and dark timer. The trio is completed by Acai Berry Tobac, featuring light tobacco, sweet berry and soft musk.

Lofty is more than happy to be left off the guest list, preferring to while away lazy days with the Nap Appreciation Society where he dons his sweatband to... well, you know, nap. Profile - Portmeirion Group

Portmeirion Westerly

Table talk In the run-up to Spring Fair, we spoke to Phil Atherton, Group Sales & Marketing Director of Portmeirion Group about their new launches for the show. Phil Atherton

How is giftware doing for the company compared with tableware? In the current trading environment, you can’t separate giftware from tableware – they’re intrinsically linked. This trend has been driven by the popularity of the afternoon tea event which has become incredibly popular amongst all age and demographic groups. Pretty much everything we make is giftable – whether that be a teapot, a candle, a baking dish or even a plate. As entertaining at home increases in popularity consumers know that a gift of tableware, cookware or serveware will be very well received. The concept of entertaining at home is evolving rapidly. We’re even seeing people who are invited to a home-based gathering contributing to that get-together by cooking or preparing a dish and buying a serving piece or cookware item to present it in, and then giving that item to the host as a gift.

Which giftware ranges did well for you in 2017? The Sara Miller London Portmeirion collaboration has been an unprecedented success. The two brands have so much in common and are therefore the perfect fit for each other – and like any good license, the result is greater than the sum of its parts. We have experienced an extremely positive reaction from our customers and also on social media

which has raised the profile of both brands. New ranges and line extensions are being launched this spring. Royal Worcester’s Wrendale Designs collection is another fabulous giftware range. After 5 years on the market, it has more than proven its status as a best-seller. Uniquely charismatic designs, fine bone china and gift pieces; the brand goes from

strength to strength. Our heritage collections continue to perform well too. Portmeirion’s Botanic Garden collection remains a best-seller across the globe as does Spode’s Blue Italian. Both of these collections are bought as gifts and are presented in beautiful gift packaging. We have found that these collections are being used in the creative photography of lifestyle influencers in the UK and abroad who see the classic ranges as very relevant to today’s trends. This has provided a huge amount of quality usergenerated-content that has really helped bolster our heritage brands.

Any particular design trends in giftware and tableware you’re predicting in 2018? 2018 promises to be an exciting year for new design trends. Mid-century retro remains a key look for interiors in 2018 and Portmeirion’s new Westerly collection fits this trend perfectly. With 3 different colourways, it also embraces the market’s desire for mix and match tableware and therefore has a wide appeal. As you’d expect, the collection is presented in beautiful gift packaging. Bold flashes of colour form another trend this year and the new Colour Pop collection from Sophie Conran for Portmeirion has just that. The Sophie Conran for Portmeirion core collection of white porcelain pieces has already established itself as a best-seller across tableware and giftware for the past 11 Years. These new Colour Pop pieces extend the giftability of this unique collection. The Sara Miller London Portmeirion collection also epitomises this trend. Bright Spode Blue Italian Dinner Plate

colours are central to all of Sara Miller’s designs and the range will see the introduction of many new items including two dedicated Christmas collections, a celebration collection and new designs to join the fabulous Piccadilly Set. Timeless, heritage designs also inspire trends in 2018. Spode will be launching a stunning Pure Morris collection which features classic designs in a muted grey tone. And, Ruskin House will also join Spode’s portfolio; a beautiful design that’s classically Spode. Both are presented in lovely packaging.

Giftware lines you’re launching for 2018? As well as launching brand new collections to meet the trend predictions of 2018, we are also strengthening our successful giftware ranges with new line extensions and categories. Royal Worcester’s best-selling Wrendale collection will see new creatures join the family including zoological orangutans, pandas, toucans, sloths and koala bears as well as new, very British hedgehogs, red squirrels and hares. Expanding the giftable kitchenware category, chopping boards will also be launched. The iconic Botanic Garden will see a range of striking kitchen utensils added to the collection which will make wonderful gifts for Botanic Garden fans, old and new. We are also adding a baking set and flexible placemat to Portmeirion’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar collection. Following the success of Portmeirion’s venture into home fragrance, a new Botanic Blooms collection will be introduced this spring – striking packaging and on trend fragrances mean this range will stand out from the rest.

How important are the trade shows – in particular Spring Fair – for you as a company? Trade shows form the ideal platform to showcase our new ranges and products as well as enabling us to listen to our customers about the opportunities they have and the challenges they face at a time when people are really focused. Whilst everyone is incredibly busy, the trade shows still give you the chance to have in-depth discussions about the industry and markets as well as the product ranges and consumer demand. Spring Fair is perfectly timed. It’s at the start of the year when retailers are looking forward to seeing what the year holds in terms of new. It is a fantastic opportunity to talk to our customers about the year ahead, what they have planned and what we have planned. It is a great platform to demonstrate to the trade why Portmeirion group are the ideal gifting partner.

Profile - Beth Dodsworth

Like mother, like daughter Recent winners of Family Business of the Year Award in Yorkshire, Julie and Beth Dodsworth explain why keeping it in the family benefits their customers and retailers alike.

I

t is always very exciting to meet new young entrepreneurs in the the home and gift industry. Gifts Today caught up with Beth Dodsworth, the young, talented retailer and distributor, to discover how working alongside her mother Julie has reaped benefits for both their businesses. The daughter of British artisan Julie Dodsworth, Beth has her own retail high street shops in Ilkley and

Ripon, North Yorkshire. She also is co-director of the Julie Dodsworth Trade Counter which specialises in supplying fellow independent stores with products from the Julie Dodsworth collections. ‘It all started with a small enquiry through our Julie Dodsworth eshop,’ Beth explains. ‘At the time Mum was solely concentrating on the display, design and licensed side of the business. I had just opened our second shop when we received an enquiry from another small independent shop in North Yorkshire. The lady was looking to be a Julie Dodsworth stockist and simply needed a little direction to the Julie Dodsworth manufacturers. But, after a little more conversation passed by, I realised I could help the lady with lots of additional information, best sellers and even a little of my own stock to try. Our Mini Trade Counter was born! ‘With the support of the Julie Dodsworth manufacturers – with Churchill China, Briers and Canova amongst the 15 amazing companies Mum works alongside - we set up our new facility. This means smaller independents can buy little and often via our Mini Trade Counter, across the 700+ SKU collection. As so many of the shops are so similar to my own, I find I can confidently advise what we think would be a great starter box. So much so, we guarantee the first delivery as everything in there really has been tried and tested. We include a free sign, follow-on support and lots of PR/social media. ‘In return I collect feedback for the Julie Dodsworth brand and work with Mum towards creating new products for the seasons ahead, ones that the retailers will love and at a perfect price point. Our new collections in home fragrance and washroom have been born entirely from the Julie Dodsworth design archive, as well as the preferences and expertise of our lovely retailers. The brand which specialises in listening has never been more so!’

‘Our new collections in home fragrance and washroom have been born entirely from the Julie Dodsworth design archive, as well as the preferences and expertise of our lovely retailers’ The Julie Dodsworth trade mark is a reflection of the family brand essence. Warm and friendly, honest and approachable, the mother/daughter team have gone on to be noticed outside of the industry and became winners of the ‘Family Business of the Year’ award

- a recognition for a combination of common sense and attention to customer service were amongst the judges’ citations. Beth will be exhibiting the Julie Dodsworth Fragrance & Garden collection at the NEC Birmingham Spring Fair in Hall 20, Stand A32 for the first time this February. Do pop along to their stand and say hello. Their warmth, good humour and enthusiasm will be infectious!

Case history

Helen and Mark of Sandgate gifts in Whitby were one of the first retailers to take advantage of the new Mini Trade Counter service. ‘We were already buying larger orders of Julie’s biscuits and jams from the manufacturer but wished to add in just a few pieces of china and the famous seedpots. Beth was simply a breath of fresh air - she made gentle suggestions and put a super little starter box together for us. True to her word, it was a box of bestsellers and we have never looked back. We have a whole section of the store now dedicated to the Julie Dodsworth brand. The support and advice has been just fantastic.’ gifts today 89

Spring Fair

From gravitydefying earrings to the return of the brooch, Spring Fair is the perfect hunting ground for the latest jewellery trends. We take a closer look at what could be big in 2018.

Jewellery @ Spring Fair Top trends for 2018 W

ith stands packed with jewellery inspired by the catwalks, there’s no better way to see what’s on trend than by walking the Spring Fair halls. It’s the easiest way to discover accessories that are sure to suit every consumer, as underlined by the fact that 89% of visitors attend the show to look for new suppliers. ‘Spring Fair is a premier show and being seen there sends the right signal to our customers. I know that sales would drop if we weren’t part of it,’ says Jackie Brazil, jewellery brand. Stephen Thurlow from Alexander Thurlow agrees. ‘Being at Spring Fair gives you the potential of massive exposure to the gift trade. Hopefully the work we have put into exhibiting does the job of attracting new buyers.’ Sarah Watmore from Miss Milly says: ‘We are very excited about 90 gifts today

Spring Fair, which is our biggest show of the year. The new collection is our favourite to date with old favourites and brand new designs in some really stunning colour palettes, and we can’t wait to share them with our customers.’ Josh Round, Director and Marketing at Treaty Jewellery, agrees: ‘We go every year to Spring Fair, it’s the biggest show and attracts a large footfall. Let’s be honest, it’s the one that everyone goes to and is the place where we need to be seen.’ Keep your eyes peeled for Fashion First at this year’s show. New for Spring Fair 2018 and designed to help put the spotlight on the newest, most exciting fashion brands, Fashion First will reveal an exclusive selection of eight international and UK, new to market and artisanal brands exhibiting at the show for the first time. They include Darkstar Leatherworks, Planetlocal and Vannaci.

The spring/summer ‘18 catwalk shows gave the magpies amongst us plenty to enjoy. Some key trends across the board include:

• Statement earrings It’s the bigger, the better when it comes to earrings. It’s not just giant hoops that are in fashion – shoulder-grazing chandelier styles incorporating everything from beads to precious stones and lightweight metal sculptures are set to be huge.

• Chunky bracelets The maximalist theme continues. From tinkling charms and statement resin pieces, the bracelet and bangle are bang on trend.

• Rose gold This colour is flattering on all skin types and right on trend for 2018. Worth considering in your usual mix of silver and gold shades.

• The brooch is back Models were spotted with brooches pinned to belts, using them to clasp jackets closed and even used in pairs on a simple ballet pump. It could be time to reintroduce this classic to a new generation of wearers.

Hall 19, Stand J05 The award -wining glass designer Julie Fountain of Beach Art Glass is launching a new and very affordable Beach Babe range of stunning jewellery. The company’s fast growth in both domestic and export markets make this an exciting time for the family business. Like the rest of the Beach Art Glass jewellery, the Beach Babe jewellery is unique - each Venetian glass bead is individually hand crafted using a technique called lampwork or flamework. Julie Fountain loves working on each individual piece. ‘Every handmade glass bead is a miniature work of art, so every customer acquires a unique necklace, bracelet or earring,’ she says. ‘Our customers and trade buyers simply fall in love with these stunning, and very collectable, creations.’ Lampwork beads are created one at a time by melting and shaping rods of Italian glass in a flame, and slowly kiln-cooled for durability. The jewellery is then finished off with sterling silver and the bracelets and pendants carry a British hallmark. The entire range is inspired by the sea and comes in four beautiful colourways - Sand & Sea is the original design, accented with a touch of bright coral, the glossy Deep Blue Sea and the softer, subtler colours of palest blue Sea Spray and lavender Sea Mist. Beach Babe completes the set, with finer sized pendants in three shapes across all four colourways.

Simply stunning Culinary Concepts Hall 7 on Stand A20 - B21 2018 is set to be another exciting year for Culinary Concepts with hundreds of new lines being introduced. Since 1999, Culinary have been dedicated to designing and creating fresh and stylish new home and giftware every season and will be showcasing all of their newest additions at Spring Fair 2018.

Lighting As an ever-growing part of the Culinary Concepts repertoire, 2018 sees the introduction of even more stunning pendants, chandeliers and lamps in a multitude of colours and finishes. Inspired by the beauty of Italy, their new ‘Rimini’ pendants with their elegantly curved, mono-chrome frames will become an eye-catching centrepiece in any room. The rustic romance of the ‘Venice’ collection with its textured ribbon shades in grey, black and gold, contrasting against simple metal frames, will add both interest and depth. Or inject a fun splash of colour with their aptly named ‘mélimélo’ chandelier – a contemporary jumble of boldly patterned mix and match shades on an impressive black or white metal frame.

Octopus Culinary’s bestselling Octopus collection is also back - but this time with a unique twist. As warm shades of gold and brass take centre stage in interiors this year, Culinary have beautifully incorporated this into one of their most popular collections. Featuring an Octopus motif winding its tentacles around each piece, they have created some truly show stopping dining accessories, now available in a spectacular gold finish. From the shell shaped bowls to the Octopus itself, the attention to detail is second-to-none and designed to make a statement on any table top. This season also sees some brand-new additions to the original silver Octopus collection with a bottle holder, glass topped cake stand, cheese board and serving bowls all making their debut.

Furniture Statement furniture pieces are an important part of any room and bold designs and beautiful finishes are something Culinary do best. Add instant style with a pinch of glamour to bedrooms and sitting rooms with one of their striking arm chairs, big on design but bringing a softer element with their plush velvet finish. Crafted with mid-century style wooden legs, these chairs make a real impact and are available in a range of designs from ‘Soho’ to ‘Cadogan’ and a variety of key colours from blush pink to leaf green. The chairs also look great when combined with their new Art Deco style drinks trolleys – an absolute must for cocktail hour and an ‘Insta-worthy’ way to display favourite tipples and bar paraphernalia. Or couple with an elegant side table to create the perfect corner to relax in; a particular favourite being the acrylic table – a stark but complementary contrast to the luxurious velvet finish. This year Culinary have added a collection of matching velvet cushions and ontrend vintage style Persian rugs to complement perfectly their collection of tables, storage pieces and chairs.

Christmas 2018 After the huge popularity of their Christmas collection in 2017, Culinary are delighted to introduce their biggest Christmas launch to date with over 400 brand new decorations and festive accessories for 2018. A glittering array of baubles and hanging decorations in contemporary silvers, vintage glass and intricately embroidered fabric awaits, all thoughtfully designed to add festive finesse to any Christmas decor. Team with stunning warm white LED light shapes for an extra twinkle - now available in a stag head and hare designs. Or channel a more traditional feel and brighten up the winter evenings by adding the warm glow of candlelight emitted from opulent and bejewelled tea light and candle holders.

Jumbo jets in

Hall 5, stand K64

Gifts Today caught up with Steve Washbourne, Sales Director of Jumbo Games, ahead of Spring Fair to discover what plans the company has for the show. What does your job involve and what do you particularly love about it? I oversee all UK sales, I love the diversity of the role and the challenges this brings. How has the company managed to succeed in such a tough trading environment? By adopting a ‘keep it simple’ approach, focusing on our core strengths and areas of expertise. In 2015 we reverted back to ‘what made Jumbo’ and it was the strength of our Adult Puzzles. We have seen double-digit growth across all brands and maintained our position as the UK’s Number 1 Adult Puzzle & Accessories manufacturer. What is it, do you think, about your products that mean you’re doing so well? We’ve got ranges that appeal to everyone and we invest heavily in ensuring that our images and themes for our puzzles are of the highest standard and what puzzlers want. Consumer research is the key to success. We have focus groups, puzzle clubs and also interact daily with our consumers on social media. Feedback is invaluable and the consumers really appreciate the fact that we genuinely care. Do you have any perennial bestsellers? Our Wasgij jigsaw puzzle brand has been the UK’s Number 1 Adult Puzzle Brand for over 10 consecutive years and saw further growth in 2017 with a +6% increase in sales YOY. There’s nothing else like it on the market for puzzlers. We invest in bringing in the best artists who in turn provide the best images and themes that our fans want. We manage releases throughout the year so as not to over produce, this way we maintain the, all important, collectability value and keep fans excited for the next releases. Our high quality range of puzzle accessories, Puzzle Mates, continues to top the charts for consumers and our Number 1 seller, YOY, is the Portapuzzle Deluxe that saw growth of +16% in 2017. Over the past two year, since its 40th Anniversary, our range of traditional British nostalgia puzzles, Falcon deluxe, has seen prodigious growth in the UK (and Europe) and has increased its share of the puzzle market and grown its fan base and loyalty tenfold. By releasing over 40 brand new Falcon puzzles a year, we 112 gifts today

offer retail and consumer a wide variety of choice in images, themes and pieces counts that are all proving the recipe for success. Can you tell us about the new products you’ll be showing at Spring Fair? From the 65 new puzzles that we have launched for spring/ summer, check out the latest Wasgij Destiny 18 ‘Fast Food Frenzy!’ and Wasgij Original 28 ‘Dropping the Weight!’ 1,000-piece puzzles – they’ll be top of Wasgij fans lists. In our traditional Falcon deluxe puzzle range, the new ‘Clacton-on-Sea’, ‘Sunday on Canal’ and ‘Racing to the Finish’ 1,000-piece puzzles feature beautiful artwork and are my personal favourites. Available in time for Easter, we will be launching our brand new Peter Rabbit children’s in both our top-selling formats, 4in1 Puzzle Box Set and Giant Floor Puzzle. You can also check-out the 20 brand new wooden toys in Jumbo’s Goula that have been added to high quality wooden range of puzzles, games and toys. How will you be supporting retailers to help them sell more in 2018? We invest heavily in Point of Sale so that we can help retailers make our puzzles stand-out from the shelves and drive increases in sales. We have a wide range of material available and we also produce bespoke items for specific retailer needs. How do your products offer both kids and adults, and how that brings in a more diverse shopper? We have quality products suitable for all ages and abilities to offer retailers, so that their customers can get everything they need. From our Goula wooden range for children aged 2+, to our pre-school licensed puzzles such Peter Rabbit, to our Disney Games & Puzzles for older children/tweens and then our Adult puzzles for older fans. How important are the trade shows – in particular Spring Fair – for you as a company? The Trade Shows are invaluable for us which I think I clear by our, ever increasing, presence. For this year’s Spring Fair, we have doubled the size of our stand and relocated to a stronger position.

Social Media - Ross Hewitt

Instagram’s time has come The groundswell of interest has been evident for a few years now - 2018 is the year where Instagram will establish itself as the most important social media platform for our industry

s an industry we used to view Facebook and Twitter as the main two platforms, but the reality is that the more visual the content then the better the engagement. Twitter’s response to their lack of growth was to recently increase the number of characters that could be used in a tweet, which serve as well as strapping a parachute to a drowning man. The average interaction rate with audiences on Facebook and Twitter is now universally accepted as 0.1%. I wrote about this a couple of months ago, with a focus on Facebook. If you have 5,000 followers on Facebook and get five likes or comments on a post, then that is 0.1% interaction. Remember, don’t focus on that one or two posts that went well – take a blended average for the last four months and work it out from there. It is likely to be even less on Twitter. Instagram should be giving you a minimum of around 2% and anywhere up to 5%. You may have less followers on Instagram than you do on Facebook right now, but 2% of 1,000 is better than 0.1% of 5,000, so do some maths on your own accounts. You will grow your Instagram following by embracing the platform fully and engaging with your potential audience in a themed and planned manner. The first step is to write down a list of content types that you think you can do well and frequently, and then come up with four or five suggested posts that you could create for each one. If you find yourself struggling to come up with ideas then maybe you are trying to generate content for something that doesn’t flow well for your business, so perhaps think

again. For example, you might want to create content around the following four themes: 1. Product demonstrations 2. Educational or hints & tips 3. Humour 4. Your geographical location Product demonstrations should come naturally to any brand or retailers, and you might find that video works well here, and you can upload up to

one minute of video content into an Instagram post right now. This type of content is easy to create and very engaging and very believable. Educational content might again be video based, and could focus on a feature such as how to prolong the life of a candle or clean a certain type of fabric. Humour should always be relevant to your audience, and on-brand. There is plenty of material out on the internet, just search for your chosen humour theme on Google and then bring them to life using an app such as Word

Swag or Canva where you can add a suitable photo and overlay the text on top. Geography is an interesting one, and this is the territory that independent retailers should have a focus on as you are based in a particular town or city. That is your doorstep and you need to rule it. When you create a post on Instagram you can tag a location and one thing that is universal across the world is that Instagram users search for local content, either by hashtags or by using the ‘Places’ tab in search results. Make sure you use a local hashtag or two and tag the location. You don’t have to stay loyal to the gifts industry with this type of content. Go out and celebrate the best cafés and restaurants in your town, or the ones that offer the most diverse menu. Video or photograph the best party venues nearby, or document the architecture if that is a feature of your town. Find a way to be a local hero and local people will gravitate towards your account, and they may become a customer. Local followers give you a better foothold to promote in-store events or generate footfall, so do try to make this a priority. Sitting over all of that is the beauty of the image or video you are sharing. Instagram is all about visual engagement so it all must look good. Invest in a great camera if your smartphone isn’t great for photos or videos, and maybe get a tripod. Lighting always makes the difference, so look on Amazon for LED rings or a soft box. Tidy up the background if you are making a video and don’t have boxes all over the place. All of that though is a full article on its own…maybe next time.

‘For children, only the best is good enough’ 124 gifts today

ichael Bond based Paddington Bear on a lonely teddy bear he noticed on a shelf in a London store on Christmas Eve 1956, which he bought as a present for his wife. The bear inspired Bond to write a story, A Bear Called Paddington - first published on 13 October 1958. Little could he have known then how many people from around the world would come to know, love and adore his small bear from darkest Peru. When Margarete Steiff created the world’s first soft toy in 1880, little did she realise the enormity of the gift that she was giving to children everywhere. In 1902, her nephew Richard designed the Steiff Company’s signature invention the Teddy bear. These are but just two moments in our history Mrs Brown bent that embraced nostalgia, and by doing so, down. ‘You’re a very changed children’s enjoyment of childhood all small bear,’ she over the world. said. Steiff has always devoted itself to making the ‘I’m a very rare sort very best soft toys for children and treasuring innovation imagination and perfection. As of bear,’ he replied Margarete Steiff herself said: ‘For children, only importantly. ‘There the best is good enough.’ aren’t many of us Therefore, given the opportunity to celebrate left where I come the marmalade-loving BAFTA nominated bear from.’ was something Steiff grasped with both hands. ‘And where is that?’ Still renowned for creating unrivaled ‘life like’ asked Mrs Brown. animals, Steiff are thrilled to add this extra ‘Darkest Peru.’ dimension of playful soft cuddly Paddington Bears that are sure to become friends for life. The company’s new plush Paddington Bears embrace all the ingredients that made Steiff famous – ultra-high quality materials, intricate hand craftsmanship, and the famous ‘Button in Ear’ Paddington is of course machine washable and manufactured to the highest standard Paddington is available in three sizes, retailing at £75 28cm tall, £99 38cm tall and an impressive 60cm tall at £169. It is the story of a company responsible for the unequalled popularity of the Teddy bear, the world’s most favourite soft toy. Over 100 years later and the popularity of Steiff has spread the entire globe and grabbed International headlines as antique bears made of traditional mohair and firmly filled with wood-wool, set world record prices at auction. Proud of their heritage yet forward-looking and venturesome, Steiff never stops chasing dreams. After all, just what would childhood memories be like if there were no teddy bears? Unimaginable!

It’s all about the Critical Non Essentials When it comes to business, CNEs – Critical Non Essentials – can really help the small business stand out.

herever and whatever the stage your business is at, there will always be bigger fish than you. It’s a challenge to not be too fazed, but the important thing is to focus on the tiny differences between you and your competitor. I remind our team daily that a race horse can win by a photo finish! A terrific speaker I was once so lucky to hear told us all about CNEs, super CNEs and those racehorse finishes! CNEs, by the way, are Critical Non Essentials the magic pixie dust in business. To really grasp a CNE, take a closer look at your favourite hotel. The clean bedclothes and smiling receptionist you probably take for granted - these are the ‘essentials’. Yet the hotelier has to piece together many, many CNEs alongside these basics - complimentary soaps and optional pillows are a good example. Then add on some Super CNEs like complimentary chocolate, state-ofthe-art technology, and the white fluffy slippers. These are the ‘wows’ they hope you will maybe even talk about when you return home, therefore advertising them and encouraging others to visit.

I remind our team daily that a race horse can win by a photo finish!

A favourite restaurant of ours called Lucy’s in the Lake District always asks when we book if our ‘meal is to celebrate something special?’ The evening menu is printed daily and these little special mentions appear within the text, with the diner encouraged to keep the menu as a souvenir. I still have the one from our first wedding anniversary in my little memory box - a fantastic ‘super CNE’ that cost zero. Once you grasp a CNE and a super-CNE you will see and experience them everywhere. It’s great to be inspired and maybe

adapt them for your business. These will become your USPs - your unique selling points; something you do that no one else in your high street/city/nation/the world (you know your market place) provides. For sure, over our 30 years in business, survival has always rested entirely on our ability to reinvent, adapt and evolve, reacting to our customers’ needs and changing quickly. Here can lie the hidden strength of the smaller guy. Where a larger competitor would take months (even years!) to change or m adapt a new plan, we could turn on a a sixpence. We’ve tried to celebrate this t in every way and always made the t very most of being smaller and closer to our customers who, in turn, c have valued our personal touch and h dedication. d But most of all, never forget that the t biggest unique element (and selling point) that can never be s replicated anywhere in the universe r or o at any time.... is you!
