125 MOGENS KOCH

March 2nd 2023, would have been the 125th Birthday of Building Architect Mogens Koch.
This small designer profile info, is a collaboration between a handful of individual unique danish brands who all share the legacy of Mogens Koch designs – still in production today.
During in Copenhagen we celebrate this 125th anniversary introducing special models, limited editions etc. and they will be featured at our individual showrooms – for sale later in the year.
Mogens Koch graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. He became associate professor in 1940 and worked as a professor of architecture from 1950 to 1968.
Mogens Koch is probably best known for his bookcases and folding furniture.
His talents led to designing silver objects and he also collaborated with his wife to produce many series of rugs and carpets. He even went on to restore many buildings and churches around Denmark.
Mogens Koch was one of Kaare Klint’s first students and later his closest employee. He was also employed by Povl Baumann and Ole Falkentorp at “Vesterport” in Copenhagen.
Getama Furniture
Mogens Koch’s folding chair MK 16 was created in the wake of functional elements from the well-known director’s chair/club chair. In Koch’s version, the main feature of the chair is a traditional folding stool with raised front and back post to support the armrest and back. The construction is quite secure and carried out with such elegance that it is able to support itself without collapsible metal security brackets. Koch’s chair is simple and easy use.
The chair frame is available in beech or oak. The seat and back are made of unbleached, double-layered canvas, and it has natural-colored leather armrests. The brackets are made of brass. The upper, inner part of the wooden cross frame is bevelled to allow complete folding of the chair. The chair was originally designed for a church seating contest in 1932. In 1938, a prototype of the chair was exhibited by the Carpenters’ Guild, and it was put into production in 1960.

Le Klint pendants
Mogens Koch’s strong connection to the Klint family, led to him creating a design for LE KLINT. His pendant has helped to lay the foundation for how we are today as a design brand.
Model 105 was designed for a Danish handicraft exhibition in Stockholm as early as 1942. The lamp had a prominent position when LE KLINT was officially established in 1943 and opened the first store in Copenhagen. Here, Mogens Koch was responsible for the interior decoration, in close collaboration with Kaare Klint who designed the furniture.
The original design from Mogens Koch has been in the collection since then and is still today handmade in Odense, Denmark.
To mark the anniversary of Mogens Koch we are introducing a new hang-up system in pure brass and two new XL versions.
Made in Odense, Denmark since 1943
Skriver Collection was established in 2007 and is well known for its great quality carpets. Besides being practical, the design carpets are made with great durability and performance, while giving a personal and unique touch to the interior of a home. Every Skriver Collection carpet is made of recycled nylon and has a PVC free rubber backing.
Mogens Koch has drawn a large number of patterns, after which his wife, weaver
Ea Koch (1905-1987), has woven the most beautiful carpets. Embroidery patterns were also drawn for the Handwork Promotion and the watercolor block was also used extensively for sketches. These patterns form the basis of the Skriver Collections collection. A rigorous design in which each part serves a purpose and where the emphasis is on a single idiom without superfluous decoration.
To mark the anniversary we introducing a brand new 150 cm round carpet.
In 2023, it will be 125 years since Danish architect, professor, and furniture designer Mogens Koch was born. In that connection, FDB Møbler is now launching a very special 3-seater sofa in close collaboration with Mogens Koch Design.
The MK46 sofa is a high-quality sofa that combines all the best from two of Mogens Koch’s previous designs. One of the sofas was designed in 1937 as a commission for a wholesaler and only made in that one example. The other sofa was designed for the manor house “Gammel Kjøgegaard”, located south of Copenhagen, near Køge, but the sketches were never brought to life. One of the characteristics of Mogens Koch’s upholstered furniture is that the frame is made as an independent construction – with frame and chair always being clearly and separately defined. Koch didn’t like the idea of the legs of the furniture emerging straight out of the upholstery, because the blind frame is often of a different type and quality of wood.

Bellahøjbench (1949) MK-15
The bench was designed at the request of Mogens Koch’s good friend and colleague, professor landscape architect C.T. H. Sørensen, whose task was to design the park around the point houses at Bellahøj. Therefore the name ‘Bellahøjbench’. The bench is made of cast iron with a wooden seat and back. The bench will be relaunched by VNKL in Horsens. Artmuseum Louisiana and The Designmuseum Denmark each bought a few copies.
