Local Inverleigh resident standing for Council

VOTE 1 John Crowe

My name is John Crowe, and I am nominating as a candidate for the Golden Plains Shire Council Elections 2024.

I am a resident at Inverleigh and have been for 63 years. I am married to a soldier’s settlers’ daughter and raised three boys who had a great lifestyle growing up at Inverleigh.

I have been involved in the local school, sporting and community organisations. Currently, I am an active member of the Inverleigh Leigh Valley Lions Club, serving on the executive committee. My professional background was in senior accounting and administration roles in building, tourism and hospital fields.

If elected as your councillor, I would listen to, and understand your concerns. I believe my professional skills will greatly assist me in assessing the financial viability of all policies for economic benefit of you the ratepayer. I would adopt a balanced approach on key areas of Council policies, such as budget, rates, road maintenance, asset management, community groups, seniors and youth opportunities, to name a few.

"Its

time to listen"

As the Shire is in a rapid growth phase, there is a big responsibility that Council makes the right decisions affecting the environment today, so that the Golden Plains Shire continues to be a great place to reside in. I would welcome the opportunity to play a part in this role. I would appreciate and thank you for your vote.

PeterT's milestone! editor of 100 editions of the Leigh News

PETER TREVASKIS IS "100" and going strong. Recently Peter’s grandson was required to attend school dressed as someone who was 100 years old. He chose to go as his “Pa-Pa” who (spoiler alert) is nowhere near 100 yet but has published 100 issues of Leigh News and been its editor since 2015. We may never know who nominated him as Senior Citizen of the Year in 2021 but there are many likely suspects and while discretion remains the better part of valour, our town elders all know how much work he does to keep us all on the same page.

The work of bringing our town and community together via media and organisations is a delicate and time consuming task. Without all the networks of people: police, RSL, sporting clubs, poets, seniors’ groups, churches, historical society and progress association coming together under the "Leigh News" masthead, we’d be a scattered and isolated bunch. Bannockburn has no local paper anymore and while the transition from print media to social media may be viewed as inevitable by those born this century, there is much that gets lost in the scrolling of devices and the rush of digital data.

Peter Trevaskis is president of the Leigh Senior Citizens group which numbers 40+ and he continues to champion The Golden Oldies Men’s Group in Bannockburn (both groups’ funding is tenuous and tenaciously maintained by Peter). He does this while keeping monthly editions of the Leigh News coming out through droughts, plagues and flooding rains. Each month we print 750 hard copies, email 450 copies and publish each edition to the Inverleigh Facebook page which has 2000+ subscribers. It is also uploaded to Inverleigh.org.au where past issues can also be accessed. All this work is done for love and for free.

Peter, like many newer residents, worked elsewhere when he and his wife Dot moved here in 2000 and it was only on retirement he found time to get to know

the town, its people and its needs. He directly succeeded Grattan Frazer as editor but the torch had been carried for decades prior by Luanne Thornton, Mike Withers, Stuart Carter, Keith Windle, Ian Lyster, Brian Burbage and others, each of whom understood the important role a local newspaper plays in connecting a town’s diverse inhabitants.

Local service providers who advertise through the Leigh News have printed visibility on pages that circulate the district for a month. They are not just floating in cyberspace and they don’t get lost in the algorithms of wider web searches. Advertising contributions keep us afloat and offer opportunities for each of us to support our own community members. Leigh News is a treasure we’d miss if it was gone and it offers us all a current voice and an historical narrative. Where the shire prints impersonal corporate newsletters, Leigh News is the voice of the district and is quick to respond and include. Try us.

Be it the floods in 2016 or the floods of 2022 or the 150th anniversary of the district’s primary schools, Leigh News was there and Peter, ever ready with a camera and keyboard. Without the editorial work he does (largely single handedly) the annual wonders of the Dachshund Derby, the Good Friday Appeal, the inauguration of Disc Golf in 2017 and the splendours of the Shelford Duck Race might have passed us by and would exist merely on a cloud.

Thanks to Peter, I for one, can tell you the skate park’s opening 2 months earlier was due to popular demand and irrepressible teen trespassers. He has the heads up and low down on the new bakery or the oldies’ exercise classes (their term not mine) on Thursday. Thanks to his trusty archive, he can tell us that the wonderful stone piles announcing Inverleigh on the Hamilton Highway, were constructed in March 2020, while in March 2019 you can read about how close we came to the service roads becoming a one way system. Through past issues we can remember the wonderful Gladioli restaurant that came and went like a delicious love affair. Who remembers the bus crashing into the white house or the goods train catastrophe in November 2022? Peter does and it’s all recorded for posterity, even a photo of the milestone outside his brother’s house on the Bannockburn Shelford Rd which makes the claim. ‘On this spot in 1788, nothing happened.’ Who knows, something might have, but that was another story that predated this chronicle. Leigh News was started in August 1977 by Ian Lyster so thanks Peter for keeping it going until 2024 and beyond!!

It is true! This is my 100 editions as Editor of the Leigh News.

I really love preparing each edition, thanks to the loads of information and articles they keep coming to my desk. I rarely have to chase contributors for information. It just keeps coming in!

And what about our Skate Park, Basket Ball Court and Bike Pump Track, and the lights!!!

I have yet to get my skates out but my grandsons Henry and George love the new facility. Many thanks to all those who have made it all possible. And what about the Hail we had in Inverleigh yesterday (25th August). It was so loud! But we are still falling behind with rainfall. I trust we will get some soon for the crops and our gardens too.

September 2024 Calendar

2023 G.D.F.L. Football Premiers-Inverleigh

The main picture for August on the Inverleigh Historical Society’s 2024 calendar features a very happy Inverleigh Senior football team with a grinning Coach, Chris Moore (at the rear wearing a cap and a smile.) The Seniors, led by Jack Fiolet, had a very convincing win in the Grand Final at St. Albans Reserve, beating Thomson by 63 points, the scores being – Inverleigh 15 goals 5 behinds 95 points to Thomson 4 goals 8 behinds 32 points. This win helped wipe memories of three recent losing grand finals by the Hawks.

Inverleigh’s last premiership was in 1992 with a hard-fought win over Modewarre and, previous to that, a Flag in 1961 when they defeated Lara. ‘Evergreen’ Mel Quinlivian played in that team and also in the last Reserve Premiership team in 1974 against Anakie. The Seniors win followed the Reserves team, led by Adam Muir, who defeated East Geelong by 8 points – 7 – 9 – 51 to 6 – 7 – 43 before the main game.

The photo top left shows the 2 Premiership Cups – the Seniors winning the Morris Seniors Cup and the Reserves winning the Buckleys Cup and both adorned with the brown and gold colours of the Inverleigh Hawks. Both Premiership Cups now sit proudly in the clubrooms for all past, present and future players and supporters to enjoy.

The bottom left photo shows former player and club legend Russell McIntosh, Club President David Haste with a friendly arm on Russell’s right shoulder, former player Garry Harding, Reserves Captain Adam Muir, Reserves Coach Ben Web and twice Premiership player Mel Quinlivian enjoying a quiet post victory ale outside the Inverleigh Hotel.

Inverleigh’s first football match was played against Winchelsea in 1875 and for many years they played ‘local’ teams/districts on an ad hoc basis until joining the Barwon Football Association in season 1911.

GOLDEN PLAINS SHIRE COUNCIL MEDIA RELEASE

Date: Friday 23 August 2024

HAVE YOUR SAY: TEESDALE TURTLE BEND RECREATION AND EVENTS SPACE SITE PLANS

Golden Plains Shire Council has developed site plans for Teesdale Turtle Bend Events and Recreation Space following community consultation earlier this year. Council Invites residents to have their say on the site plans from Friday 23 August until 5pm, Friday 13 September.

The site plans have been developed based on community feedback provided through the initial phase of community consultation in February 2024. Proposed upgrades include: upgrading the stage area and surrounding pathways, replace existing picnic tables with family-sized accessible tables, install a new playspace area, improve parking, upgrade the bike and skate facilities, install fitness/agility areas and increase safety around crossing points and shared path trails.

Golden Plains Shire Council Mayor Cr Brett Cunningham said the proposed upgrades in the Teesdale Turtle Bend Reserve Recreation and Events Space site plans aim to cater to a diverse range of age groups

“Council received more than 120 responses during the initial consultation page, which goes to show how important this community space is to Teesdale residents and visitors to the area,” Cr Cunningham said.

“This project aims to increase opportunities for social connection and inclusion for residents and users and will support the health and wellbeing of the Golden Plains community. Having community-endorsed site plans is an important part of advocating for State and Federal funding to make these improvements a reality,” he said.

“I encourage Teesdale residents and visitors to view the plans and share your thoughts to further inform this project as it progresses.”

The Teesdale Turtle Bend Recreation and Events Space Site Plans engagement is open from Friday 23 August until 5pm, Friday 13 September 2024. Local residents and visitors are encouraged to view the plans and provide their feedback by visiting goldenplains.vic.gov.au/consultations.

Once the site plans have been finalised, Council will advocate at a State and Federal level for funding to deliver the proposed upgrades for the Teesdale Turtle Bend Reserve Recreation and Events Space.

Threats to the Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve

Our reserve is not a dumping site

I have been regularly visiting the Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve for the past 5 years and one of the most common sights, sadly, are the piles of dumped rubbish. I have seen all sorts of things dumped in our reserve. Roof tiles, building materials such as concrete and broken PVC, car parts, tyres, and countless bottles, cans and glass shards. Bizarrely, I once saw a fridge full of rotting fish in bags – the fridge is still in the reserve to this day. To me, this dumping is troubling and saddening. The illegal dumpers do not realise that the reserve is an important community asset which benefits us all, and having it sprinkled with garbage is a great loss.

The reserve sees mixed use from dog walkers, horse and motorbike riders to wildflower enthusiasts and birdwatchers. The physical and mental health benefits of a nice walk in nature are priceless. For me, the reserve’s primary value is to escape society and be a part of the natural, untouched bush. That illusion becomes broken quickly when you’re looking at the ground and spotting a beer can or plastic wrappers every 25 metres.

recent good news however, in that the group has received a grant from Bannockburn & District Grants which has gone towards two new handheld GPS units. Used previously for marking invasive boneseed, these will also be used to mark dumping sites for removal.

The Friends of the Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve hold rubbish clean-up days which usually focus on roadside areas as they are the most visible and accessible. The larger items of hard-waste dumped deep inside the reserve are a lot harder for the Friends group members to address. There is some

Not to excuse bad behaviour, but everybody is feeling the cost-of-living pinch right now and I suspect it is playing a part in the rise of dumped rubbish I have noticed. The fuel costs, disposal fee and even the time involved in getting rid of an old fridge clearly is too much for some people. It should be as easy and affordable as possible to do the right thing. One solution could be a Golden Plains Shire hard-waste collection service to alleviate the dumping issue by providing people with a free and legal method of disposing of these kinds of items. Shire residents would benefit from a system similar to The City of Greater Geelong’s system where residential properties can book two hard waste and two mattress collections each financial year. If anyone is interested in coming along to help out the Reserve, or for any enquires contact: Keith Windle on 0429 651 298 or at windle.keith@gmail.com. You can also like our Facebook page ‘Friends of the Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve’.

In the meantime, enjoy a bird walk with the Friend’s group on Sunday 8th September 9.30- 11.30. Meet at the Common Road entrance. Spare binoculars will be available.

Golden Pens - Write side up

G’Day from the penners for September. This month’s poem is from one of our newer members. Gail has led an interesting life, with stints of living overseas including Arab lands and she regularly writes about her experiences, which we all find fascinating. This little beauty is about some experiences a bit closer to home.

We hope you enjoy it. Remember you can contact us, like Gail did, via our email address goldenpens4@gmail.com

Cheers, Wendy.

The Flying Sanger

Not so very long ago we four were at ‘The Zoo’, Enjoying some respite at last, our game of golf concluded. In the back room, just us four, we shared our plans and outings, Perused the menu, ordered food, and… continued talking.

The rest they say is history. We all know what ensued. An errant egg jumped off Marg’s plate and bounced upon the floor! The waitress scooped it up post haste and dropped it in a bin. What laughs we had at its expense—that funny runaway egg!

Another time, another place, the club house at Curlewis. We found a table, settled down, decided what we’d have, Approached the bar and ordered drinks, along with simple snacks, Then sat back down and waited for the fare to be delivered.

Coffees came, paninis too, and even extra napkins But toasted gluten-free cuisine takes much more time it seems. We waited, waited patiently, for Marg’s bespoke delight And there it was! Upon a plate. Aloft and coming near.

‘Ta da!’ I shouted, so excited. ‘Finally, it’s here!’ ‘Oh no!’ we chorused. ‘Not again! Look out. It’s taken off!’ And right before our very eyes, with mouths agape in shock The flying sanger launched itself and crashed onto the floor!

Embarrassed, crushed and mortified the waitress stood stock still: ‘I’m sorry, Marg. I couldn’t do… anything… to stop it!’ But by this time, we’d laughed and laughed, ‘Til tears ran down our cheeks.

‘Not your fault,’ we reassured, the food and beverage waiter. ‘It’s not the first time that we’ve had a foodie misadventure.’ And so with that, another lunch, was fixed within our psyches Of times enjoyed, made memorable, by airborne eggs and sangers.

22 Leigh News POLICE REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER

Hello all,

Good to see the new Inverleigh skate park, BMX track and basketball court open and a big thanks to those involved in getting this project up and running. Please respect the area, Police have already had a call about a vehicle driving onto and parking on the basketball court.

I have had some reports of a couple of locals regularly drink driving after sessions at the hotel. If you are detected driving with a breath alcohol level of .05 or more it means a loss of licence and fitting of an interlock if you manage to regain your licence. I will be keeping an eye out for some of the people and vehicles nominated and will be doing some random checks of drivers leaving the area.

We are still getting some youths riding about the Inverleigh township on electric scooters and even today while I am writing this article one on a petrol motor push bicycle riding past the shops annoying staff. Electric scooters can’t be ridden by anyone under 16 and petrol fitted push bikes are motor bikes and can’t be ridden without a licence and registration.

INVERLEIGH RSL IS ‘CALLING THE ROLL’ TO FIND ANY UNKNOWN LOCAL VETERANS

Inverleigh RSL has launched ‘Operation Roll Call’ to ensure that any currently unknown war Veterans are properly commemorated.

‘We have become aware that our roll of Veterans is incomplete. We are determined to discover all those whose names are presently unknown to us’ said Sue Maguire of Inverleigh RSL

‘Veterans whose names should be inscribed on a local monument or honour board all deserve to be properly recorded’ said Inverleigh RSL President Deema Johnston. ‘In effect we are 'calling the roll’ to make sure that 100% of our district’s Veterans are accounted for’, he said.

‘Operation Roll Call’ will build on the outstanding work already done by members of the Inverleigh Historical Society, who have built up an extensive database of local Veterans who served up to and including World War 2.

‘The names of our district’s Veterans who served in any conflict or operation since 1946 still need to be documented’ said Bronwyn Price, Convenor of Inverleigh Historical Society.

Local families who are aware, or concerned, that they have a military ancestor who has not yet been acknowledged, are urged to contact Sue on 0419 383 207 or Deema on 0430 211 916 with any available details.

Smoke Alarms

I recently attended an information session about smoke alarms and learnt a few new things about alarms and the positioning of them.

Firstly most people should be aware that they need to be tested regularly, monthly has been suggested as a good period of time, just get the broom and give it a press on its button to make sure it beeps.

Then change the battery every year if it is one of those types requiring a battery.

In August 1997 the building code changed so that every new building or renovation of a larger size needed the smoke alarms to hard wired with 240volt electricity. So now we have two types of alarms, older homes with battery only and the newer homes with hard wired and battery back up. Both types need to checked on a regular basis that they are working correctly. In recent times there has also been long life battery alarms that the battery will last the life of the alarm.

So what is the life of a smoke alarm? It is ten years. It is now recommended that they should be changed over every ten years and replaced with newer and more efficient units. This is easy enough for the older style battery only alarm but the newer hard-wired ones will need to be installed by an electrician. If you have older hard-wired alarms then maybe next time

you have the need for an electrician then add alarms to list of work to be done.

Another issue to consider is where to position an alarm. A lot have been placed in hall ways and outside bed rooms, but recent thinking has changed and it is suggested now to have them in all the bedrooms and living areas. This has come about for several reasons but one of the main ones is that people shut themselves in bedrooms on a device and if a fire starts then it takes too long for the alarm to activate if all the doors are closed and when they finally do, then escape can be a lot more difficult. The amount of chargers and electrical devices away from the kitchen area have increased massively with the advent of phones, computers, games and the like and therefore the risk has increased in these rooms.

Smoke alarms can be hooked together as well so if one goes off, they all do, therefore alerting the whole house and not just a room. A working smoke alarm is the first line of defence in your home and they are not that hard to check and maintain. Regardless of any legal requirements, it just good practice to ensure they are working and in good condition to protect your home and family, It is your responsibility, not anybody else’s.

Southern Farming Systems (Media Release)

Young Agriculture Professionals Network for South West Victoria Southern Farming Systems was proud to host the inaugural Fields of Future Dinner for the Young Agricultural Professionals (YAPs) network at GMHBA Stadium on Wednesday 14 of August. The fantastic evening was attended by many in the agricultural industry from across the western districts of Victoria, including a representative from Tasmania bring together like-minded young (or young-at-heart!) professionals in the agricultural industry, providing a space to develop connections, network, and socialise. Supported by Southern Farming Systems with funding from the Australian Government’s Future Drought Fund.

The unseasonably warm weather made for a pleasant evening, with delicious food, flowing drinks, and a lively atmosphere. Oli Le Lievre, MC for the evening and founder of the Humans of Agriculture podcast, kicked off the event with a warm welcome, setting the tone for the night.

Guest speaker, Rhys Stanley, AFL Footballer for the Geelong Cats, delivered an insightful speech about his career as an AFL footballer and his experiences in farming, highlighting the interactions between the two. Then after dinner, Dr. Elle Moyle joined Oli for a chat, sharing her journey of buying her own farm at just 27, learning to run it, and how her background as a veterinarian has shaped both her farming lifestyle and her role as District Veterinary Officer for Agriculture Victoria.

Oli then gathered all the guest speaker’s Rhys, Elle, and Scott Chirnside, SFS Chairman of the Board on stage for a Q&A session. The discussion provided valuable insights on how farming has influenced Rhys’ life, enabled Elle to offer more practical advice in her veterinary work, and the importance of engaging young people in agriculture while keeping them passionate and connected. The key takeaway? Enjoy what you do! Finally, Malcolm from the Rural Financial Counselling Service delivered an important talk on managing tough times, offering resources for those who might need them, especially given the dry season.

“The night was a resounding success, made possible by the hard work of the SFS team that truly made the event shine!” said Greta Duff, SFS YAP’s Coordinator.

We look forward to our next YAP’s event. If you’re interested in joining or want to know more about our future activities, visit https://sfs.org.au/project/young-agriculture-professionals-yaps-network. or contact Greta Duff E: gduff@sfs.org.au

Avian Influenza- Community Update

Updated on 22 August 2024

Early detection helps to stop avian influenza from spreading beyond the existing areas.

Agriculture Victoria is responding to the detection of avian influenza at 7 Victorian poultry farms in the Golden Plains Shire and 1 in the Corangamite Shire. Avian influenza is a viral disease of birds found globally.

Seven properties close to Meredith have been infected with a strain of avian influenza called H7N3. A property near Terang has become infected with the H7N9 strain

A comprehensive disease monitoring program is in place in the restricted and control areas to detect the viruses. Restricted and control areas surround all infected premises.

What is it?

Avian influenza is a highly contagious viral infection of birds. Serious forms of the disease caused by highly pathogenic (disease-causing) avian influenza viruses can result in severe illness and sudden death in poultry.

How is my area impacted?

From Thursday 15 August 2024 the housing requirement for poultry in the control areas surrounding Meredith and Terang has been lifted:

• the restricted area around the Terang infected property has been reduced from a 5km to a 1.5 km radius

• the control area at Terang has also been reduced from a 15km to a 5km radius

• The control and restricted areas in the Meredith area will remain the same.

Poultry farmers, backyard flock and bird owners are urged to continue to be vigilant and report any cases of unexplained bird deaths to the VicEmergency Hotline on 1800 226 226.

Restrictions will change in line with the risk over time, to keep updated on current restrictions please visit agriculture.vic.gov.au/avianinfluenza.

Have you received a text or phone call from Agriculture Victoria?

Agriculture Victoria is contacting residents who are within the restricted and control areas for the avian influenza virus. To help us to transition back to normal – we need to hear from you.

If you have not spoken with us but have received a text or phone message, please call us on 1800 226 226. We would like to know if you have poultry and if they have been unwell in the last month. If you answer yes, we will work with you to monitor your poultry and support your concerns. We will not be imposing further restrictions or removing your birds – if you answer no, we will remove you from our call list.

Spread to humans is rare

The spread of avian influenza from birds to people is rare but may occur with some strains of the virus if there is close contact with infected birds or their droppings, or with heavily contaminated environments. Always practice good personal hygiene when handling birds.

People cannot become infected by consuming cooked chicken meat or eggs. If you have had contact with birds on an affected property and you are experiencing cold or flu symptoms, call your doctor or the Department of Health on 1300 651 160 for medical advice.

The seasonal flu vaccine doesn't protect against avian influenza, however, it can help prevent the mixing of bird flu with seasonal flu virus

Let us know

Avian influenza is a notifiable disease. This means that you must tell Agriculture Victoria if you know of or suspect it in any birds. Call the VicEmergency Hotline on 1800 226 226

For more information

More information, including movement permits, maps, compensation details and mental health resources, is available online at agriculture.vic.gov.au/avianinfluenza or via the QR code.

For advice on keeping backyard poultry, visit the Agriculture Victoria website and search for backyard poultry.

Welcome Dr Dora Tan

You may have seen our newest vet Dr Dora here at the clinic on a Saturday.

Dr Dora is a 2019 Melbourne University Graduate who currently works at a specialist equine hospital during the week and at Bannockburn Veterinary Clinic on Saturdays.

Welcome to the Bannockburn Veterinary Clinic family Dr Dora!

Bathing Your Dog

There are some major differences between canine skin and human skin. Due to these differences its important to use specific veterinary products when bathing your dog.

Canine skin has a pH of 6.2 and human skin has a pH of 5.5. A good quality shampoo should be pH balanced to the pet.

Canine skin is much thinner than human skin and this means that the delicate skin on our dogs need to be treated and washed with veterinary specific products. These are less likely to strip oils from the coat and disrupt the normal function of the skin.

Hills Prescription Dental Diet

Hill's nutritionists and veterinarians have developed Hill's Prescription Diet t/d specially formulated to keep your dog's teeth clean and help control the oral bacteria found in plaque.

Features & Benefits include:

* Unique kibble scrubs away laden plaque in the mouth to promote systemic health

* Clinically proven to reduce plaque, stain and tartar buildup

* Reduces bad breath

* Added antioxidants to control cell oxidation and promote a healthy immune system

Hills Prescription dental Diet has been awarded the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) Seal of Acceptance for helping reduce both plaque and tartar accumulation.

We stock Hills Prescription Dental Diet for both dogs and cats. Come into the clinic or call our reception on 03 5281 1221 if you would like more infomation.

Magpie Swooping Season

We are often out and about walking with our dogs in the nicer weather. It's important to remember spring time in Victoria is usually known as Magpie swooping season.

Magpies swoop to protect their young however not all Magpie's swoop. There are many ways to protect yourself from the minority of birds that do.

Swooping behaviour can be scary and intimidating and usually it is only the male bird that swoops. They only do so if they have chicks in the nest and it can last up to six weeks.

The easiest way to avoid being swooped is to avoid locations where swooping birds are. Leave the area as soon as possible but don't run and if riding

We have a wide range of Dermcare products at the clinic available for purchase. We are more than happy to help find the right choice for your dog. Did You Know?

Fleas thrive in the warmer weather.

Spring is often when we realise that we may have let flea and parasite control lapse over the winter months.

There are many flea and parasite products available such as Simparica Trio or Revolution for Dogs and Nexgard Spectra Spot On for Cats. Call us on 03 5281 1221 or drop into the clinic to discuss which product is best for your pet.regarding any of the above with one of our vets.

That lip curl cats make after sniffing something is called the flehmen response. They use their tongue to trap the pheromones above the roof of their mouth to process them.

a bike hop off and walk as Magpie's see fast moving objects as threatening. If you are travelling in a group they are less likely to swoop as they mainly target individuals.

They are also less likely to swoop you if you’re looking directly at them. Keeping your eyes on the Magpie while leaving can reduce the chance they will swoop again.

You can use an umbrella which can protect you while you move through the area. It shoudn't be used as a weapon but only to protect yourself should the Magpie decide to swoop.

Gelding procedures

Dr Hugh met this shetland pony recently when he was in at the clinic for a gelding procedure.

The pony lived up to the reputation of a cheeky shetland, stealing a few nibbles on legs during the exam but was a great patient none the less.

If you have a colt requiring gelding please call the clinic on 52811221 to book an appointment.

BANNOCKBURN SURGERY IS CELEBRATING 40 YEARS.

Dr Rimas Liubinas

A humble beginning for Bannockburn Surgery when it first opened its doors in 1983 – small rooms located between what was the original supermarket and pharmacy.

Soon outgrowing these rooms, they moved in 1986 to 19 High Street with two consulting rooms, a small treatment room and tiny tearoom for its team members. Its current building (16 High Street) was opened in the year 2000 – a purpose-built practice complete with five consulting rooms and a sixth added in 2010.

The practice has grown from strength to strength and has a wonderfully dedicated team of Doctors, Nurses, Reception team and Practice Manager. They also have access to high-quality Allied Health services including podiatry and newly introduced acupuncture with Dr Rimas Liubinas, with plans for more services to follow.

For Bannockburn Surgery who celebrated their forty-year anniversary a few weeks ago, this was a proud milestone. The surgery welcomed back former team members: doctors, nurses, administration staff, and allied health for an evening of festivities reminiscing on the past forty-years and what the future holds for the practice.

The Directors (and Principal GPs) of Bannockburn Surgery would like to take the opportunity to say thank you to those whom have been part of their practice team, past and present. And also extends a warm thank you to patients for ongoing support in entrusting their health to the team at Bannockburn Surgery and their journey.

The surgery has a proud history and is incredibly excited for the future. Not only the future of Bannockburn Surgery, but also in continuing to support the growing community of Bannockburn and its surrounds. The surgery has grand plans and is eagerly awaiting to commence build

Bannockburn Surgery is a fully accredited medical practice that provides comprehensive GP services and have been practising within the community for 40 years. Bannockburn Surgery is the largest practice within the shire.

We are an accredited teaching practice –training medical students, nursing students and future GPs.

of their purpose-built facility to be located next door to their current premises.

It is pleased to announce that another GP Registrar will be joining the team from August, Dr Ernest Cheng, which will extend the provision of service even further. They are also very fortunate that their two current GP Registrars; Dr Bushra Akhund and Dr Abhi Selvakumar will be continuing at the practice for an additional six months.

Bannockburn Surgery doctors will be continuing to bulk-bill patients with healthcare cards and pension cards, as well as those under 16 years old.

Appointments are available daily and the doctors are welcoming new patients.
