Kids declare castle a royal success! We celebrated the grand opening of our newly-built timber castle at Inverleigh playgroup on 11 October with dress-ups, crown making and a special morning tea. 60 people attended, including members of playgroup and local community groups who supported this project. Children loved discovering all of the castle’s features, especially the interactive shield on the front of the castle which is adorned with textural elements and moveable parts. Other accessories include telescopes, binoculars, rotating flags, drums and a funfair mirror – items are distributed across the two levels to cater to mixed abilities. This project was funded by the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal and custom-built to our own design by Shamus O’Reilly, playgroup parent and local builder (SO’R Construction). We are so grateful for the enormous amount of patience, time and energy that was required to bring this project to life and create such a high quality construction. Materials were sourced from Barwon Timber. The installation of this castle has been a huge accomplishment for the 2023 Inverleigh Playgroup Committee, and we hope it will be of great benefit to the community for many years to come! WOW can you believe high eight is turning 10…what an achievement!!! On November 1st 2013, Lisa Sarcevic opened a home and living store. A dream that became a reality was the beginning of high eight. A 150 year old cottage in the heart of our village, became the quaint store that we all love to visit. The Progress Association has been actively working towards improving the amenity of Inverleigh for over 40 years. Of course all such organisations need volunteers and the Association is no exception. Without them nothing happens. If you have some ideas for the town you would like to achieve, you are welcome to join us and help achieve them. Some of the projects completed by the Progress Association include: Public Toilets Progress Association members worked for many years with Council to have new block built. They are used more than any other toilets in the Shire. The Clock a new clock was recently installed on the clock tower in our main street. Town Entrance Signs. IPA worked for many years to procure the 2 Entrance Signs (Hamilton Highway East and West) welcoming travellers to our town.

The Inverleigh Historical Society was formed in 2004. It operates under the auspices of the Inverleigh Mechanics Institute and Public Hall Committee. Our Aims are to collect and preserve items of local historic interest and to promote research and interest in local history. We welcome all donations to our collection or the opportunity to copy material. We are most grateful to the many people who have kept the Historical Society in mind as they sorted through their own collections. We undertake many interesting projects and have enjoyable meetings, which you are welcome to attend.

There are some very exciting activities coming up this month in the district. The Historical Society have a special presentation on "Flour Mills of Geelong" which could be quite interesting. The R.S.L. have all sorts happening on 11th November, starting with the Remberance Day March and services at the Inverleigh Monuments, followed by a "vehicle Show" of Cars, Custom Cars, Street Machines, Bikes & Trucks. The will be drinks and Food available, giveaways and raffles. It falls on a Saturday so lots of opportunity to pay your respects to those who served in the Forces, as well as family fun and activities. Lest We Forget! And finally, the street upgrade and revitalized parking from the Hotel to Servo is progressing with tar all but finished, gravel levelling of parking bay to be completed, grassed areas to be completed and post and rail fencing (similar to Yerram Yallock Bun Play area) to be installed. It will be good.

Leigh District Riding Club - Inverleigh

Leigh District Riding Club’s home grounds are at our beautiful local Victoria Park in Inverleigh. This is an invitation for new members, and a special encouragement for those who use and enjoy the horse facilities at Victoria Park, to join and support the club that maintains them. Or simply to make a donation to LDRC towards the maintenance of the arenas you enjoy. Golden Plains does not own Victoria Park and does not fund or maintain it. These grounds are entirely maintained by volunteers of either LDRC or the Victoria Park Committee. We are a small, inclusive club for adult and junior riders wanting to enjoy their horses, at whatever level they might be. Most rally attendees are not highly competitive riders, but riders who enjoy the calm of a smaller club. Joining LDRC costs $220.00 of which $170.00 is the HRCAV insurance fee which covers you 365 days of the year, provided you are engaging in a HRCAV type activity, wearing riding boots and helmet. (think riding at home, trail riding, having a lesson, but not rodeo). Juniors and non-riding members cost less. HRCAV membership also allows

riders to compete / attend other HRCAV events and shows. You can also be a member of more than one club, in which case you only pay the insurance once. HRCAV / membership fees are due from 1 November 2023 so joining now gives the best value for money. LDRC has fantastic jumps and obstacles available for instructors to use. During 2023 we enjoyed several rallies with instructor Heather Bowers involving dressage, poles and jumping, depending on rider choice. We also had Jodie Rowan and Alex Bader for lessons. We attended an indoor arena during the Winter months, and held an obstacles day with Marg Anderson. Our rallies are held on the second Sunday of the month. The AGM is being held on 12.11.23, after an obstacles morning. We do attempt to cater for all horse and rider abilities. If you want to come and try a rally before considering membership, we can organise Day insurance. Afterwards, we will sometimes share some lunch. This great community event cannot continue unless we can find a community minded person/people with a passion for books and the ability to coordinate the 2024 Inverleigh Book Bazaar in May. The Inverleigh Public Hall Committee members will give support, guidance, links to other Book Bazaar volunteers, and practical assistance. The Book Bazaar is a fund raiser for our Hall. Help Shape Primary Health Care in Western Victoria People from all backgrounds and parts of western Victoria are invited to apply to take part in Western Victoria Primary Health Network’s (WPVHN) Community Advisory Council to help identify and plan the right health services for our community. WVPHN is a not-for-profit organisation predominantly funded by the Commonwealth Government to work with the GPs and others in the primary health care sector to improve health outcomes for the community. Through its advisory councils, WVPHN wants to draw from a diversity of community views and experiences. On Sunday the 15 th of October Inverleigh CFA Brigade celebrated and acknowledge the dedication of its members. As everyone knows how hard it is to get a group of people together in one place at once time. It was a very proud moment to get the Brigade together for a group photo. All active members in the new station were looking sharp . Service awards were presented to members from 5 years to 55 years of dedicated service. As the Captain of the Brigade it was a very proud moment seeing all these members recognised and presented with there certificates and medals by our Commander Gavin Fitzgerald and Group Officer Mark Brown .There are so many stories and a large amount of

history that this brigade has over its 86 years in the town . From current members to retired members we all enjoy our afternoon supported by the Inverleigh Hotel and fantastic staff . The brigade is also very proud of its new up and coming young members seen below in there new gear conducting some pre summer drill’s pumping water down on the Barwon river . Think of the couch or sofa or settee, A place to lounge, a safe place for me. Or snuggling up on a cold winter’s night, Listening to the storm and not taking fright. I have six pillows or maybe more, Some that just get chucked on the floor. But under my head they feel so nice, They always look comfy and they so entice; I love my pillows of all sizes and shapes, So soft and sweet, them, I’ll never hate. I long for my bedtime to snuggle up sweet An experience every night, a lovely treat.

Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve The Friends of the Reserve had a very successful outing on our bird walk in October, recording over 25 birds, and learning a lot along the way. One bird that we did spy, and can always count on to make a show, is the Superb Fairy-Wren. The adult males are those strikes of blue and black you see flitting from bush to bush, and the mousy brown feather balls are the females. The best way to tell a FairyWren from the other little brown birds, is the long, thin, cocked tail they sport and wiggle as they chirp and chatter amongst themselves. They’re never far away and if you do the right things, you can help them into your back yard. Fairy-Wrens feed on the small bugs and wrigglers in and around the grass and low dense bushes. Being such a small critter (only 14cm long at their biggest) they also need some good dense shrubs and bushes to retreat into. Native grasses help provide their dinner, as do small native shrubs. Small dense bushes also provide a home and a refuge and shelter from the bigger bullies of the bird world - think small dense spiky grevillea or dense mounds of local Hop Goodenia.

These are the Days of Our Wren. The Friends group will hold a final Wildflower Walk for the year on Sunday 12th November, 1.30-4.00. Meet at the Common Road entrance. Tree Planting Day

Our Tree Planting Day held at the school last term was a huge success! We managed to get almost 70 native plants in the ground, plus our new fruit trees. A big thanks to all of our community members who came to help, Jimmy from Tree Care Consulting for pre digging holes and teaching our students how to plant, Hannah from Hesse Rural Health for the 'Smoothie Bike' and all of her help on the day, Dan and Jackson from Pristine Outdoor Property Services for assisting with our new orchard and feature trees, Planet Ark, Golden Plains Shire Council and Victorian Schools Garden Program for their financial support to purchase our trees and shrubs, Warrion Cottage and Diaco's Garden Nursery for their great range of native plants and fruit trees and the wonderful staff Shelford Primary School, couldn't have done it without you! I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as Mayor over the past 12 months and am proud to have served the Golden Plains community. I encourage residents to review their fire emergency plan and stay informed this fire season to keep themselves and their community safe. Council will be providing fire safety information on its website and through social media over the coming months, so make sure you stay up to date. Council recently adopted the Moorabool River Reserve Masterplan which helps guide environmental conservation, rehabilitation and passive recreation at the Reserve for the next 10 years. There has been a tremendous amount of work put into this plan we look forward to implementing the key elements to ensure proper management of the reserve. Lastly, I’m thrilled that the Golden Plains Twilight Market is returning in 2023 for a delightful evening of festivities. I encourage the community to save the date on Thursday 14 December from 4 to 9pm at the Bannockburn Heart. Grass Seeds

Grass seeds are a common problem and are most prevalent during the spring and summer months. They usually end up in your dog’s eyes, ears or paws but can also be found in other places. Grass seeds have sharp tips and can easily penetrate your dog’s skin or lodge themselves in your dog’s ears, eyes or paws. Dogs usually acquire grass seeds during a walk or play in the grass. They can cause a painful swelling which can turn into an abscess. The swelling will be very irritating for the dog and they often will lick, scratch or chew the area. Seeing the signs early on will allow for quick treatment. If left untreated there is the risk of having an ongoing issue that can be difficult to get rid of. If you suspect your dog has a grass seed it’s important to have it treated as soon as possible. In some cases the vet will need to place your dog under sedation to be able to examine, locate and remove the grass seed. If an abscess has formed sometimes a drain will be placed. Antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication are often prescribed after removing a grass seed to avoid or treat infection.

GOLDEN PLAINS SHIRE COUNCIL MEDIA RELEASE Date: Monday 23 October 2023

CALLING OUR EMERGING LOCAL LEADERS Golden Plains Shire Council is supporting aspiring community leaders to strengthen their leadership capacity and competency with the return of its Community Leadership Program. The Community Leadership Program (the Program) aims to develop emerging and aspiring leaders within the Golden Plains community, foster their leadership abilities, enhance their expertise, competence and self-assurance as well as develop community-driven projects and events. The Program will begin with the first session in December 2023 before resuming in the week of Monday 12 February 2024 and running weekly until the week of Monday 29 April 2024. Participants can select for the program to run on Tuesday mornings from 10am to 12.30pm or Wednesday evenings from 6.30 to 9pm. The day selected as most preferred by majority of participants will be the day the weekly program runs on. The Program will consist of 10 sessions delivered both online via Zoom and face-to-face at the Bannockburn Cultural Centre, 27 High Street, Bannockburn. Participants are required to attend at least 8 sessions to complete the Program. Community members who live, work, study or volunteer in Golden Plains Shire and are looking to improve their leadership skills and connect with other community leaders are encouraged to apply for the program. Participants require access to reliable internet connection and a computer screen. Mayor Cr Brett Cunningham encouraged aspiring community leaders to participate in the program. “Community leaders are a vital part of Golden Plains Shire and have the power to make a positive impact on our community. It’s important we’re providing our local leaders with opportunities to develop and enhance their skills, build strong networks and learn from each other to create lasting change,” Cr Cunningham said. “The Community Leadership Program empowers our local leaders by enhancing their skills and equipping them to enact positive change through tangible actions, supporting Golden Plains Shire to continue growing as a diverse and connected community.” Expressions of interest will be open until 5pm, Monday 4 December 2023, and can be completed online at goldenplains.vic.gov.au/consultations.
