FREE SKIN CANCER CHECK AND AWARENESS UNIT TO VISIT INVERLEIGH

SATURDAY 1st & SUNDAY 2nd JUNE 2024 – 9am to 3.30pm

The van will provide a free skin screening service to local people and will be operated by fully trained, certificated , volunteer dermoscopists. The unit will also be a valuable resource for local people to access not only the skin check, but valuable and timely information about skin care and self-checking techniques.

We know early detection of skin lesions potentially saves lives, so this visit will be a timely support and reminder to local people of the need to take care of their skin. Following the skin check, visitors will be issued with a referral to their GP if th ere are any suspect spots or lesions.

The Unit is not a medical clinic, so diagnosis or treatment requirements are not discussed – it simply provides the skin check and alerts the visitor to skin lesions that require further checking and attention: a great first step in ensuring urgent needs are addressed. The airconditioned van has three fully equipped screening rooms and an entry foyer, as well as a disabled lift and entry at the rear.

Members of the Lions Club of Inverleigh-Leigh Valley will be responsible for

BANNOCKBURN SURGERY IS CELEBRATING 40 YEARS.

Bannockburn Surgery first opened its doors in 1983 – a humble beginning in small rooms located between the original Pharmacy and Supermarket.

The practice soon moved to 19 High Street in 1986 with two consulting rooms, a small treatment room and tiny tearoom for its team members. In 2000, the current building (16 High Street) was opened, – a purpose-built practice complete with five consulting rooms, a sixth room having been added in 2010.

One of the Principal GPs, Dr Cameron Profitt commenced in 1991. With Dr John Henderson joining the practice in 2006 and Dr Ben Fry following suit in 2012. The practice has since grown from strength to strength and has a wonderfully dedicated team of Doctors, Nurses, Reception staff and Practice Manager. They also have access to high-quality Allied Health Practitioners with plans for more services to come.

Bannockburn Surgery has been fortunate to have additional GP Registrars join our team expanding our provision of service even further. This means they are lucky to be in the position to have capacity to offer more appointments including on the day appointments.

A GOOD-FOR-ALL Good Friday:

If there was ever any doubt about the power and goodwill of community in our region, The Royal Hospital’s 2024 Good Friday Appeal should lay it to rest. With attendances somewhere between 3 and 4,000 the turn-out was unprecedented, the weather spectacular and the money raised, phenomenal, a whopping $40.059.71!

Event organiser Jay Cook said, ‘the stand-out moment for me was seeing thousands of people come and enjoy themselves and help us raise this huge amount.’ For everyone else it was all about getting together: having fun, examining vintage cars, slurping Timboon ice cream, petting farm animals and even cosplay.

From performances by our local talent to the Lion’s Club sausage sizzle to the spectacular raffle baskets and hand crafted toy boats being made for kids by The Men’s Shed group, the event was a triumph complete with rides, slides and showbags.

On behalf of the IDGFA committee Jay expressed his thanks to all the business, individuals and community groups who supported the day. ‘Without our many supporters we would not have been able to raise anywhere near this amount. Thank you! We are always looking for new ideas, committee members, volunteers, business and community groups.’

It might take a village to raise a child but it takes a town like Inverleigh to raise this sort of money in a town of 1500 people. Where did they all come from?

If you are interested in becoming involved in the IDGFA Family Fun Day in 2025 please get in touch with Jay Cook on 0409 234 652 or email him on Inverleighfa@gmail.com

Hello everyone as we pass the 1/3 mark of 2024. Where has the time gone...

As you can see from the front cover photos, the new additions to the Playground at Yerram Yaluck Bun are moving along nicely. It's clear to see now that these additions involve a substancial amount of earth moving and that scale is well suited to teens and their activities.

For those who are wanting access to the water pumps and standpipes, please note that Murray McMillan will not be available for a while. During his absence you will need to contact Gwenda Smith for the issue of keys to access the pumps in the pump shed. Her contact details are on page 51 of this edition.

And finally boys and girls, see if you can find where Maggie is hiding this month. Her photo may be getting smaller making it a bit harder to find, but she is somewhere in this magazine. Regards to you all, PeterT

Help us make a Zine about Inverleigh.

To start with, what is a zine?

A "zine" is all sorts of things, but most often a self published work featuring an interest or passion from the writer/artist/creator. They can be made up of art, story, fan fiction, poetry, comic, humour, protest. alternative media or self revelation. Zines are often made to add unheard voices to the mix and usually not made for a profit. Zines can be swapped, sold, shared or given away.

Last year we held a Zine Fair in Inverleigh and this year we are having another one. Yay!

Saturday July 27th we’ll be back at the Inverleigh Town Hall with support from the Inverleigh Progress Association and the Beyond the Valley Festival.

Last year's Zine Fair was a fabulous day that saw stall holders and visitors to the town from Apollo Bay, Ballarat, Geelong and Melbourne as well as Lethbridge, Teesdale and the Bellarine.

This year we are expecting another amazing time and we would love to make a local zine. This will be a free zine that will be distributed to stall holders and visitors at ZINEverleigh.

If you have artwork, stories, comics, poetry (or something else) that you would be interested in having included in this zine please get in touch at "zineverleigh@gmail.com"

“Cameron Hill”

“Cameron Hill”, Murgheboluc, is one of the older farmhouses in the district being built in 1859 and is listed on the Victorian Heritage Database. All the newspaper articles and historic listings show a rather dour and brooding building, but this image taken recently by Bronwyn Price shows an inviting and loved building. Maybe it is the use of colour which enhances the “a rare surviving example of the one and a half storey vernacular farmhouse built of rubble basalt construction similar to those in Scotland and northern England”.

CAMERON HILL: MURGHEBOLUC PHOTO:

Scotsman Alex Cameron built a house, planted vines and a bluestone winery following others in the establishment of a Geelong wine industry. In the 1870’s the property was sold to the Richie Bros. who had leased the nearby “The Hermitage” from the Amiet family. Already established vignerons they won prizes for their wine in Sydney and Paris. In 1879 the family had wine stock of 45½ hogsheads. A hogshead is a large cask holding between 250 -300 litres. That amounts to 43,650 litres. Sadly the good times could not continue and after the discovery of Phylloxera, the Victorian government instituted the Vine Disease Act for the eradication of vines in Victoria with compensation to be paid. Most of the Richie family moved to Gippsland.

Phylloxera, an aphid-like root louse that destroys grapevines, devastated up to 70% of Europe’s vineyards at the end of the 19th century. It first appeared in Australia at Geelong in 1877. It spread north, being detected in New South Wales in 1884 and

Queensland in 1910, destroying vineyards and devastating the industry. South Australia, having banned the movement of vine material in 1874, remained free of the pest. Western Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory also escaped infection. Properties were inspected to ensure no traces of vine roots remained.

“Cameron Hill” was in the care of the Brislane family for generations who farmed sheep, with Darcy Brislane, in a Geelong Advertiser interview in 1976 stating “it’s just home”.

Apart from “Cameron Hill” and “The Hermitage” Inverleigh also was the home of “The French Vineyard” located in the vicinity of Fuller Road.

Rhonda's Long Lost Family from Poland

Rhonda Trevaskis (nee Ostrowicki) from Shelford (Pictured left) recently met up with relatives from overseas when they visited Australia for the very first time.

Rhonda's family are originally from Europe and she has been searching since she was 27 years old, to make contact with any distant relatives.

The "Ostrowicki" family of 4 from Poland are: Krzysztof (Dad, aged 61) Hanna (Mum, aged 60) and their 2 daughters, Alicja (37) and Agata (28). This is their story.

"The Picture"

Left to Right: Bob (brother-in-law), Irene (sister), Renate (sister) Laila (sister)

Front row.L to R. Rhonda Trevaskis, Aud (mother) Robie (nephew) Frank (Dad) and Sonia (Niece)

gave it to me . And I wrote to You saying that we might be family. Then after we exchanged some emails you sent us "this picture"!

So it was like this: your cousin Krzys kept telling us that we have a family in Australia and that he remembers that this uncle from Australia visited Poland when he was a young boy. So at first I ignored it but he was persistant and because he didn't know English he asked me and Aga if we can maybe search somehow for some family in Australia but we found nothing.

So my dad started to ask around the family to collect some more info. He told Wojtek about the search and Wojtek said that his mom also remembers that an uncle from Australia visited them back in 1970-ties

We don't stay in touch with her, even Wojtek does not know that much. But he asked her and she said that she remembers that he stayed in touch with his parents and siblings and he was writing letters to them but after he died it stopped and they lost contact to any family that was still there in Australia. She also said that some years ago one of her cousins said that she received an email from a potential cousin from Australia. But this cousin said that she didn't know English so didn't reply and just forgot about it. We don't stay in touch with that part of family at all, I haven't met that lady before (I believe she is my aunt) but I found her daughter on Facebook and I wrote to her. She is a girl my age and I told her that I presume that her mother received an email from an australian email address. So this girl sneaked to her moms computer and found your email address and

And my mom saw this picture and said "wait, I recognize this picture” and she went upstairs to the attic where we store all the family photos and she brought a box with old pictures that we inherited after my dads mom died and she found this exact picture because years ago Uncle Frank from Australia sent it in the letter to his mother and then his mother gave it to Frank’s brother and his wife = my dad’s parents.

Long story short: I heard rumors that she was contacted by someone from Australia years before, I asked her daughter, her daughter didn’t know about it but she logged into her mothers computer, found your email address and sent it to me, I wrote to You, we confirmed that we are family by having the same picture that was taken in Australia.

David and Rhonda prepared a signature Book, complete with Polaroid Photos of family and guests for the special family to take home. Peter and Bev Cullen made their "Austin Six" car available on the day to transport the guests, bringing to a climax a wonderful long lost family story, long to be remembered by all.

Fire Restrictions Lifted.

As of 1am on Monday 22nd April the fire restriction period for the summer months will be lifted for our local areas covering the Golden Plains and Surf Coast shires.

This now lets people conduct burning on their properties without the need for permits or restrictions such as cleared perimeters and water requirements near the fire. While the legal aspect of burning has changed the common-sense approach is still needed and always will be when dealing with fire.

So just because restrictions have been removed it is not a signal to burn everything you can at the first opportunity you have. Do not do silly things such as lighting fires on really windy days or near buildings or assets or other valuable objects. Do not try and burn things that might be better off in the rubbish bins or taken to the tip.

Scouts, Venturers, Rovers and Adult Leaders from 1st Bannockburn are set to attend the 26th Australian Jamboree in Maryborough Queensland in January next year and are fundraising to help offset the fees.

A Jamboree is a once in a lifetime event for a Scout. Held every 4 years, Scouts spend 10 days doing awesome activities, experiencing new challenges and making friends for life.

Our fundraising activities to date include holding BBQ’s at community events, raffles, and selling Cadbury chocolate boxes, hot cross buns, socks, and donations via the Container Deposit Scheme. Other fundraising events which will begin soon are a battery and scrap metal drive.

The group is planning to hold a trivia night in August and will be seeking donations of goods and

Every year we seem to have call outs to fires that have got way or caused problems when burning after the restrictions have been removed, in most cases they are incidents that could have been avoided if more care had been taken. This year has had a drier start so some grasses and timber are probably still capable of carrying a fire in certain places, so be vigilant.

If you are to have a reasonably large fire or a fire that might go for a while, then it is a good idea to register the burn with the emergency service authorities so the fire brigade does not get called to it. This can be done two ways as follows.

Register Online at Fire Permits Victoria and enter your details, Call 1800 668 511 and speak with an operator to record your details.

Thank You to the boarder community for its help in keeping our local region relatively fire free over the last summer and remaining vigilant on the high fire danger days that we experienced later in March.

I read recently that the way to make time slow down was to introduce your brain to new experiences, that way it gives it different things to evaluate and your perception of time passing slows down. So here is the penners solution to this, a new poem from Peter Wilding. It’s a bit of a tongue twisters so that should get the grey matter exercised.

No thanks required, just enjoy.

Cheers, Wendy.

Changing Seasons.

Does the season need a reason

For to start you off a-sneezin’?

Or do seasons just go do as seasons do?

For if seasons don’t need reasons

Then why am I a-sneezin’?

“Nothin’ personal” says Autumn, “It’s not you.”

“But the times they are a-changin’

And the weather’s rearrangin’

It’ll keep on gettin’ colder now, mind you.

You’ll need to find a jumper

For there’s gonna be a dumper, These clouds of mine have got an inch or two.”

So I went inside to shelter.

No longer would I swelter;

Put the shorts away, the summer T-shirts too.

Close the window, turn the heat up,

Watch the rain come down and beat up

All my earthworks in the garden, turned to goo.

POLICE REPORT FOR MAY 2024

Hello all,

Had a recent report of a theft of a push bike from the rear of a premises in High Street Inverleigh down the Eastern end of town. This is on top of a recent incident in the Inverleigh school grounds where a male and a female were wandering around trying door handles of various rooms. Please be aware that on occasions there are people up to no good wandering about the town and any unsecured property especially visible from the road/paths could be a target.

I am still getting complaints about motorists not stopping at the stop sign at the end of Common Road at the intersection of the Hamilton Hwy. You need to come to a complete stop and give way to vehicles travelling on the Highway. Just because you may see no one coming you cannot pass without coming to a complete stop. The infringement is a $365 fine with 3 demerit points. Vic roads and the council assess intersections and make the decision wether they will erect a stop or give way sign and usually the stop signs are put there for very good reasons/collision data.

I am still getting complaints of youths on unregistered motorcycles riding about the new estates on either side of Common Road and on occasions around Turtle Bend in Teesdale. If parents obtain motorcycles for their children they should also make the effort to take them to legal tracks or have arrangements with friends that have farm properties etc. There should be no permitting their children riding about the roads/ footpaths. It is dangerous for the inexperienced riders and also an annoyance to the amenity of the neighbourhoods. Please have consideration of the other residents in your community.

\Scooter complaints is also on the rise. I have previously detailed the offences for riders and a quick search on vic roads and other web

sites will let you know the offences the main one being children under 16 cannot ride electric scooters at all. No carrying an extra passenger, no riding on footpaths and helmets must be worn. There are specific offences for electric scooters and parents should be aware of the rules before purchasing them for their children. There has been a lot of publicity of the high numbers of injuries reported from riders of electric scooters and their have been several fatalities reported as well.

One of the biggest risks to community safety in the area is still road trauma with several major thoroughfares passing through the community and we all know of several bad collisions that have occurred in recent times including some heavy vehicles ones recently.

While patrolling last year I issued over 930 infringements to drivers getting about the roads and highways including 3 for drink driving, 34 for excessive speed where they had their licence suspended, 31 unregistered vehicles and 19 for unlicensed driving. I am still getting a lot of speeding drivers but the speeds I am detecting are generally coming down. This was on top of other offences including suspended/disqualified driving and excess prescribed concentration of alcohol offences where summonses for court were issued. Please obey the road rules most infringements are issued to drivers who are not locals but I am detecting locals on occasions breaking the road rules including for exceeding the prescribed concentration of alcohol which is disappointing to see.

Footy/netball season is well under way. Please make sure if you are consuming liquor at sporting events please do not drive and either walk home, have a designated driver or get a lift/ taxi.

Keep Safe Chris.

Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve

Fungi season is approaching. It is a time when the weather is wet but not too cold, and life that is usually hidden from our view, can be seen. Mushrooms and other fungi are present all year round, living as threads in soil or wood. If you turn over leaves which have formed a damp pile on the ground, you may find these threads, which are usually white, growing on leaves or sticks. A mass of fungal threads is called mycelium. When the weather is suitable, it sends out the fungi that we see, growing from soil or wood, on leaf litter, or even on unfortunate insects.

Fungi come in a range of shapes, sizes and colours. Many are mushroom-shaped and brown or white, but some are vivid shades of purple, yellow, red, orange, green or blue.

A small mirror is useful to look under the cap of a fungus. On most fungi you will see gills, but one group known as boletes, has a spongy layer instead. The purpose of the gills or the sponge is to release spores which fall to the ground or fly in the wind. When one lands in a suitable place it can develop into a new fungus. While mushroom shapes are most familiar, you may find fungi shaped like spheres, shelves on trees, cups, corals, cauliflower, clumps of jelly and even red starfish. Puffballs have a tough skin which is filled with powdery brown spores.

When a raindrop or a stick touches the puffball, a puff of spores flies from the small hole on the top of the ball.

If you find a fungus, consider its role in the environment. Fungi use mycelium to gather nutrients from the place where they are growing. If this is wood or leaf litter they are helping to break it down, so that it becomes part of the soil. Fungi close to trees may join their threads to small tree roots. The tree provides the fungus with sugars manufactured in their leaves. In return, the fungus gathers minerals and water from the soil to share with the tree.

Fungi also provide food for animals. You may find fungi with wallaby teeth marks, or with insects feeding on their gills. Wherever you find fungi, in a natural place such as Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve or even in your garden, look at them closely and think about the benefits they provide to our world.

Inverleigh Tennis News

The win tops off what has been a dominant season for the boys, finishing second on the ladder at the end of the home and away season. Ocean Grove, their opponents for the grand final, had narrowly defeated Inverleigh on both occasions during the season however the boys proved to be finals specialists, defeating Ocean Grove in the semi-final 4 -2 and then again in the GF with a thumping 6-0 victory.

Congratulations gents on a terrific season.

In the junior competition our top junior girls team, fresh from their 3-peat the previous season, were regraded and moved up into section1. This is a tremendous achievement and a testimony to all the hard work and practice they have put in over the years. The team consisting of Georgia Collins, Laura Terpstra, Lucy Blersch, Ellie Broadhurst and Clara Blersch did not make the finals this year but had a good season non the less against some very strong competition. Well done girls.

Our section 2 green ball team consisting of Grace Lubcke, Matilda Lomas, Morgan Miller and Ava Lubcke narrowly missed out on playing finals after finishing 5th, one painful point out of 4th position. They hope to go one step better next year.

Our section 4 green ball team consisting of Fenn Hayden, Ada Wilson, Charlotte Lomas, Florence Taylor and Zac Irouton-Cole went one step further by qualifying for finals after finishing the season in 3rd position. Unfortunately, they were bundled out in the semi-finals but it was a terrific effort to make finals in their first year of competition. Well done all.

A great addition to junior tennis has been the introduction of a much more introductory orange ball competition for kids just beginning to play tennis or keen to try it out. Played on a ¾ court with low pressure balls, the games are fun and instructional with parent help on court not only helpful but highly encouraged, with participation prioritised over the score results. It was fantastic to see the club enter a team in the orange ball competition this summer and all involved had a great time.

The orange ball competition is open to all so contact the club if you would be interested in entering your own team.

Again, thank you to all the parents who have made themselves available to help out the juniors with transportation on the weekend and for also getting involved with scoring and umpiring.

Thank you also to Jo Mullen for co-ordinating the teams each week and recording the results online. With the summer season now completed the club is keen to hear from anybody interested in putting their name down to play in future competitions, winter or summer. This can be a junior team, a senior team or

A reminder also that Nicole Mullen is running weekly tennis coaching clinics at the courts every Thursday afternoon at 3.30pm, 4.15pm & 5pm. Cost is $10 per child. Nicole can also provide racquets for anyone wanting to have a hit but don’t have one.

Farewell to Dr Niki

We are sad to say goodbye Dr Niki Bricknell who recently left the clinic to pursue an opportunity overseas. Dr Niki has been at Bannockburn Vet Clinic for over 2 years and will be greatly missed by all the staff and clients.

We wish her all the best with her time abroad and future endeavours.

World Veterinary Cancer Congress

Last month Dr Peter and Dr Kelly travelled to Tokyo in Japan to attend the World Veterinary Cancer Congress.

New Microscope

As part of winning Zoeitis Vet Of The Year late last year Dr Kylie received a new microscope as her prize.

The new microscope has been a huge asset to the clinic. With the large screen it allows us to show owners what we are looking at when we take swabs, scrapes and needle aspirates.

It allows us to document our findings and compare bacterial numbers after medication has been given.

The picture on the screen shows rod bacteria and inflammed cells from a dogs urine sample.

Have a look at what else we have found in the frames below.

Arthritis and Your Cat

Arthritis is a condition that leads to pain and degener- ation of the joint.

Cats can be affected by having limited mobili- ty, sore joints and poor quality of life. Arthritis is common in all sizes, ages and breeds and up to 40% of cats have some clinical signs of osteoarthritis.

Solensia is an new therapy that can help your cat keep comfortable and have a good quality of life. It targets and neutralises a protein that stimulates pain in cats with athritis. Its a simple monthly injection administered by your vet and means your cat can benefit from decreased levels of pain and increased mobility.

If you think your cat may benefit from Solensia and would like a consultation with one of our vets please call the clinic on 03 52811221 to book an appointment.

36 Leigh News

The World Veterinary Cancer Congress is an international conference held every four years with a goal of improving and developing the level of education in veterinary oncology around the world.

Our Vets are always updating their knowledge on the most current veterinary practices to ensure we give your pets the best quality of care and socialisation early on. Juvenile Class is a great option for young dogs who need that extra bit of training or socialisation but are too old for Puppy Class.

Call the clinic on 52811221 for more information or to book into a class today

Vaccinations

Pet vaccines exist to prevent your pet from falling ill. They provide immunity from a range of infectious diseases and work by building up the immune system.

While a puppy or kitten is with their mother, they are protected from illness through the maternal antibodies they receive through her milk. Puppies and kittens are at a higher risk of catching infectious diseases when they are weaned.

Regular vaccinations are an important part of routine health care. At the time of vaccination, a physical examination will also be performed by our vets. Because our pets can't tell us how they feel, regular check ups are vital for their health.

Vaccination schedules can be confusing so feel free to contact the clinic with any queries. We send regular reminders to ensure your pet is up to date with vaccination and parasite control.

If you would like to book a vaccination appointment please call the clinic in 03 5281 1221
