INVERLEIGH PROGRESS ASSOCIATION meet in the
Inverleigh Public Hall
on the 3rd Wednesday of each month @7 :30pm (Except January)
VISITORS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME President: Hilary Hamilton Secretary: Luanne Thornton Treasurer: Tony Waayers Leigh News Editor: Peter Trevaskis
The Progress Association has been actively working towards improving the amenity of Inverleigh for over 40 years. Of course all such organisations need volunteers and the Association is no exception. Without them nothing happens. If you have some ideas for the town you would like to achieve, you are welcome to join us and help achieve them. Some of the projects completed by the Progress Association include: The Federation Bridge which was built to commemorate the centenary of Federation in 2001. Walking Tracks were established with lots of support from the community, including fencing and tree planting. Public Toilets Progress Association members worked for many years with Council to have the old toilets removed and a new block built, which did not detract from the entrance to our town. They are used more than any other toilets in the Shire. The Clock a new clock was recently installed on the clock tower in our main street, clearly visable from the General Store across the road.
The Inverleigh Historical Society was formed in 2004. It operates under the auspices of the Inverleigh Mechanics Institute and Public Hall Committee. Our Aims are to collect and preserve items of local historic interest and to promote research and interest in local history. We welcome all donations to our collection or the opportunity to copy material. We are most grateful to the many people who have kept meet in the Inverleigh Public Hall 0n the 4th Monday of each Month @ 8pm the Historical Society in mind as they sorted through their own collec(Except December & January) tions. VISITORS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME We undertake many interesting projects and have enjoyable President: Katrina Robson meetings, which you are welcome to attend.
Peter’s Editorial
Summer is nearly over and it's getting cooler. Perhaps you would like a story to read? Well, I can help you out! On Page 41 is a story shared with me, which I felt was so well written and worthy of including here in the Leigh News. It was too long to include it all, so I will publish it in serial form over the next few months. I know you will enjoy it. The Leigh News exists to promote all that is local community, here in Inverleigh, Teesdale, Shelford etc. and I include as much as I can each month (hence this month we are up to 52 pages again). If you have a story to share or a community event to promote, send it to me. Leighnews@bigpond.com will find its way to my desk and I'll deal with it from there. I trust you all enjoy this issue. There is plenty for every type and taste to enjoy. Have a go at the crossword too. I have (without peeking, of course) and have got about 70% done so far. That's pretty good for me! Have a good month and hope to see you around the village sometime!

4 Leigh News POLICE REPORT FOR MARCH 2020
Hello all, I noticed recently some dogs roaming about the streets after the recent thunderstorms which can be traumatic for some dogs and other animals. Some dogs become that distressed that they flee their premises and run around the area making them vulnerable to vehicles. Please ensure if you own a dog that it is registered, it’s wearing it’s collar and also have a tag with owner details and contact phone numbers on it please so you can be quickly located
to collect the animal. It is great to see the town signage on the rock walls on either side of the town. Together with the new playground and re vamped school crossing I feel that the amenity of the main street has been greatly enhanced. Congratulations to all those involved in obtaining these facilities/features. In relation to current Police issues in the area it is still mainly traffic issues that I am getting tied up with. I have been getting a few
disqualified drivers passing through our area which I have initially detected speeding. Please take care over the upcoming Easter period when we will have a lot of extra traffic on our roads heading to various holiday destinations. I am normally very busy over Easter with motorists not obeying the various road rules. Keep safe Chris

McMillan Family Reunion in Inverleigh
On Sunday 9th February three generations of descendants of Stanley Traill McMillan gathered at Inverleigh for a reunion. During the early 1800s business ventures were created in both Geelong and Melbourne by the family, moving to Inverleigh and buying property in 1913. Through the generosity of Geoff and Isobel Oliver, family members were able to visit “Englewood Park” the first of two properties owned by Annie McMillan and her two sons Stanley and Leslie, for many years they traded as McMillan Brothers. This arrangement continued for some years after which they also purchased the “The Falls” which was ultimately occupied by Les and his family and the two properties were gradually managed individually. The family became well known for their development of Polwarth sheep and associated stud. Stanley and his wife Elma had 5 children John, Robert, David, Peter and Ann, all serving during the second World War and between boarding school and the armed services they had little time at home on the property yet had been able to recount family life at Englewood and passed that history onto their own children,
subsequently during the visit, armed with family records some of Stanley’s grandchildren were able to describe to younger generations what life was like at “Englewood Park” They were able to identify the site of the original homestead, the 2 acre vegetable garden, the orchard, the croquet/tennis court, the water wells, the formal gates to the front garden (still in place) the bluestone tank (also still in place) water from which was used for swimming and garden. For the older of Stanley’s grandchildren the visit to “Englewood Park” brought back special memories of family activities especially for John and Murray as they had the privilege of living on the property for their early years whilst their father David developed a business and home in Inverleigh. Murray with his wife Kate and family still live in Inverleigh. “Englewood Park” was sold in 1953 to the McConachy Brothers and subsequently is now owned by the Oliver family, after visiting the property the family had lunch at the Inverleigh Hotel.

INVERLEIGH TOWN ENTRANCES – QUITE A JOURNEY
In 2009 the Inverleigh Community Coordinators, requested to use the Inverleigh Progress Association ABN to apply for a Community Grant to beautify the town with a view to building a Town Entrance at each entry point along the Hamilton Highway. The Association received a grant of $3600 on behalf of the community coordinators and it was hoped this would fund at least half of the project. A project brief was to be developed and our local artist Ade Loe was asked for ideas. In March 2011 Ade suggested an exciting metal tree, approximately 20 feet X 30 feet, that could be located on the north side of the highway leading into Inverleigh from the east. A quote of $50,000 was obtained and there was some concern expressed at the next community coordinators’ meeting because the cost was for one end only. In 2010 a letter was sent to Council requesting an extension of the grant. This project was originally to be coordinated by the local community coordinators with the support of Neil Nolke, then employed by the Shire as a Community Facilitator. In 2011 after further discussions it was suggested that an electronic “What’s On” sign be erected opposite the General Store near the Gazebo. Neil Nolke then moved on from the Shire to the Water Taskforce for Geelong’s G21 team. The electronic sign did not raise any lasting interest, but the idea for a Town Entrance was instilled. In 2013 a new community Plan was developed for the Town and the Town Entrance was one of the projects remaining from the 2001 Inverleigh Town Place Plan and received much support at the meeting. In 2014 a note in the Progress Association minutes “Still looking at options. No decision as more important matters.” The project had by now fallen to the Association as there were no longer a group of local community members working with the Shire facilitators.
In May 2014 the then editor of the Leigh News, Gratton Fraser, showed us a proposal. There would be 2 rock walls, approximately 3.5 metres long by 1.1 metres high at a price of just under $10,000. Unfortunately, he received a business offer in August to move to Queensland. November 2015 a new Community Planning Facilitator, Nicole Langtip was appointed and her role with the Progress Association was very welcome. We were not eligible to apply for any further Community Grants until we had completed the project for which we received our grant in 2009. The Town was due for an update to the 2013 town plan and Nicole suggested she would help get the project to fruition. In 2016 Eliza Peel joined the community and the Progress Associa-
tion. Like many of her generation she was happy to take on a project, rather than just attend meetings. Before long she had contacted a number of stonemasons and made contact with the Shire as to possible locations. She also obtained some extra funding, including $5,000 from the Bendigo Bank in Winchelsea. There followed much discussion and by July 2017 the design was being clarified. The plans and sites needed approval from the Shire, Vicroads and the Corangamite Catchment Management Authority as the western town site was in on a flood overlay and there were a few hiccups along the way. Nicole coordinated our project with the various bodies and kept us on track. Eliza kept the community informed along the way, writing for the Leigh News, spending time at various

places showing the community and using our notice board. David Long, the selected stonemason, stayed with us throughout and did not increase his fee. By February 2018 we had a project brief, which was forwarded to the Shire. There were no objections. By March all the initial paperwork was ready for Council. In May, Eliza met onsite with Michael Thornton from Rendine Constructions. He offered to have detailed CAD drawings with all the required details and forward them to Melissa Blyton, then an engineer with Golden Plains Shire. Later, a meeting was held at Rendine with Melissa, David, Eliza, Luanne and an engineer to guide us through the various permits and paperwork required to undertake such work on a roadside. By September we were only awaiting the Golden Plains Council to remove one of the Cypress Trees on
the site to the west and give us a final permit “Application to work within a road reserve. Work started on site on 24th October 2018. Ray Sarcevic and Aaron Peel dug and poured the concrete footings and David was able to proceed. During the weeks it took to build Eliza and Ewen Peel hosted David in their home and we are indebted to them for this. By the end of January Aaron Peel was removing the last of the excess stones and the community could see the two entrances. The final piece of the puzzle was the lettering and Peter Trevaskis worked with Eliza and Ion Carpus from Atex Steel, to come up with the design for the individual steel letters. They are now in place, thanks to Peter. This project has taken a long time but we have been supported by so many people, including staff at our Council, over the years. We hope you, the community, appreciate the beauty and be proud of our Town Entrances and understand how much time and effort has gone into building them. Inverleigh Progress Association

CFA MESSAGE FOR THIS MONTH What a summer so far! Heat, humidity, fires, rain and floods. The rain particularly was a great example of what was mentioned last month with the fire rating system that we have in place in Victoria. When ratings of “Extreme” and “Code Red” are in place CFA members will not be able to extinguish the fire should it occur. Even a “Severe” rating means that a fire may not be able to be extinguished, but the heavy rain that occurred over a wide area did what we can’t do ~ put the fires out or bring them under control! It’s really important that this message gets through, if only to minimise the possibility of a careless act that can have severe consequences. CFA members will certainly be “on the ground” in all cases but their task will be to protect lives and, where possible, protect properties. One of the dangers is that some may now think that the worst is over, and this simply isn’t true. The fire danger period will run through, at least, to the end on March and there’ll be more hot and windy days to come, so please maintain your state of awareness and preparedness. News services have exposed the younger members of our community to sights that can be quite disturbing. While the kind of fires we’re now seeing are horrific and unprecedented, most children are
resilient and will bounce back. By parents can minimise the risk that their children will experience disaster-induced anxiety or depression. The following steps will help engage children in talking about the fires that they might have seen on the television or seen pictures about in the papers. 1. Let them know that whatever they are feeling is okay. Children need to know that whatever they’re experiencing or feeling in response to the fires is normal and understandable. 2. Reassure your children. The questions children ask will often be driven by a need for reassurance that they are safe, so let this guide your answers. Let your children know that there are many people working hard to keep them safe. If they see firefighting services in action or hear sirens, reassure them that these emergency services are skilled at what they do. 3. Help your children know they, and others, won’t be alone. If they ask about the people who have lost homes or who have been hurt in the fire, let them know that there are a lot of people working hard to take care of them, and to keep them safe. Talk to them about the charities and organisations that are providing resources and support and if they ask about wildlife, talk to them also about the organisations
who take care of injured wildlife. 4. What if this happens to us? Events that have recently occurred can make children very aware of their own vulnerability. They will be aware that people and families like them have suffered great loss, and this can understandably trigger fears that the same thing could happen to them. Children will look to the important adults in their lives for signs of safety. When those adults believe they are safe enough, it will be easier for children to believe it too. 5. Keep up to date with weather and warnings. Talk to your children about weather warnings and fire ratings, particularly warnings for total fire ban days, and explain activities that are prohibited, such as BBQs, and why. 6. Make sure your children know vital information. Act out how to call emergency services, so they know what they need to say, and include your children when developing your family’s fire plan. 7. Help them find ways to help. Ask your children what they can do to help. Encouraging them to know that through their own acts of kindness and the awareness that they can make a difference.

MARCH 2020 CALENDAR
STRAW NECKED IBIS A familiar sight in our local paddocks are groups of ibis probing the soil for insects. Usually there are black and white birds, and comprise two of the three native ibis species. These flocks are the Straw-necked Ibis (Threskiornis spinicollis) with their glossy black back and iridescent plumage, and the Australian White Ibis (Threskiornis moluccus) colloquially called ‘tip turkeys’ or ‘bin chickens’ because of their adaptation to scrounging in rubbish dumps. Apart from colour the strawlike neck feathers distinguish the Straw-necked Ibis from other ibises. When flying, it has a white body and black wings, while the Australian White Ibis has a black head with white body and wings. Its preference for grassland insects such as grasshoppers and locusts have earnt it the name of Farmer's Friend and it usually avoids cities. It is said to be nomadic across Australia following feed sources. Looking up a V-shaped flight of Straw-necked ibises is an elegant exercise in precision flying designed to use the least energy to cover the greatest distance. All the birds in the formation flap their wings at the same time, then all glide together, their long necks and beaks stretched out before them, a common sight around Inverleigh. They are silent away from their nest, but may have hoarse rolling calls when in flight. But where do they fly to or from?
They commonly nest with the Australian White Ibis in groups of up to 100,000 birds on platforms of trampled reeds, rushes and sticks which are reused year after year. The two closest areas I have located are Lake Lorne at Drysdale and on Mud Island. Both sexes build the nests, incubate eggs and feed the young. In researching this topic I came across a wonderful CSIRO website which showed tracking data from a number of waterbirds, and if you are like me and
find this research fascinating (I especially like the shark ones) then look up this site https:// research.csiro.au/ewkrwaterbirds/current-satellite-tracking-2017-2018/why-strawnecked-ibis/ . One bird left the Murray River and was tracked to near Yepoon, Queensland over twelve months. If anyone has a photo that they think might be suitable for the calendar, please contact: Bronwyn Price or Liz McDonald 5265 1270.

This street in Teesdale that has caused a lot of discussion.
Where did the name come from?
I was asked by the Golden Plains Shire when they were developing a new street off Shaws Road if I had any suggestions about a street name, I suggested various names of early settlers, but it was decided a local Aboriginal name should be used. In my book "From Native Creek to Teesdale", page 37, I have an article from the Geelong Advertiser Tuesday 29 October 1918. Charles Anthony Corbett Wilson who was the Leigh Shire Engineer for about 50 years and lived at Teesdale for most of that time was asked if he knew where the name Teesdale came from. He also mentioned “I have been told by the blacks that the native name was “Tooliroopah” as near as I can express it” I thought that must be correct, it has proved to be a mystery as no one has been able to find where the name came from, I asked the late Lou Lane, an archealogist who has studied the Aboriginal people around Geelong and across
western Victoria, if she knew anything about the name. Her suggestion was, it is most likely two words Tooli – their name for Native Hut Creek and Roopah – a name of a plant, somewhat similair to spinach, that was a very important food and was found growing in abundance along Native Hut Creek. Unfortunately there are no one left of the people to ask, so we have to go with what little information we have. On the subject of naming – the name of Native Hut Creek comes from George Russell, who camped for the night at the junction
of the Barwon River and Native Hut Creek in 1834. “A great number of blackfellows’ mia-mias were about here, which was the reason why the creek got the name, Native Hut Creek”. (Narrative of George Russell of Golf Hill pp 82,83). And Teesdale was named by Alexander Skene the surveyor, he marked on his field book “Marking township Teesdale” Friday 25th September 1851. GOLDEN PLAINS SHIRE COUNCIL MEDIA RELEASE
SHARING THE STORIES OF GOLDEN PLAINS Your Story, Our Story, a special exhibition celebrating the history and stories of the townships of Golden Plains will be installed in the new Council Chambers at the Golden Plains Community and Civic Centre (GPCCC), scheduled to open to the public in mid-2020. The inaugural exhibition for the new Council Chamber will be representative of communities across the Shire, and will be a collaborative exhibition, with residents invited to nominate objects that represent a special story or theme for their local community. When considering an object, Council encourages residents to think about: • • •
What is special about your community? What special stories about your community does this object tell? What makes it different?
The exhibition will be housed in a display case in the new Council Chambers, and residents are also encouraged to consider the size of each object they nominate. There are a number of ways to nominate an item: • •
Complete the nomination form online at goldenplains.vic.gov.au/consultations Pick up a hard copy of the nomination at Council’s Customer Service Centres in Bannockburn (2 Pope Street), Linton (68 Sussex Street) and Smythesdale (19 Heales Street).
Nominations are now open, and must be received by Monday 16 March, 2020. Golden Plains Shire Mayor Cr Owen Sharkey says the exhibition in the new Council Chambers is an excellent opportunity to showcase the history of Shire. “Golden Plains Shire has 56 townships, from large urban centres, to small rural communities, each with their own rich history.” “This exhibition will bring together special objects from these townships right across the Shire, and the objects will take pride of place in the new Council Chambers.” “No community is too big or too small to nominate a story or object, and we hope to hear from all corners of the Shire. I encourage all residents to get involved and nominate something that represents their town’s history." The final selection of objects for inclusion in the exhibition will be made by Council’s exhibition curator. Construction works are continuing on the GPCCC, which will extend and improve the Bannockburn Customer Service Centre for residents, Councillors and staff. The project includes an accessible, modern customer service area; private meeting rooms for residents, Councillors and staff; new Council Chambers; a sustainable, modern workspace; and accessibility for people of all abilities.

Some of the recent lessons have involved creating drawing robots and the students have also been making lights. They have really enjoyed the hands-on learning that the MARC van provides. Cooking Program Our cooking program has been a great success with the kids relishing their roles in food preparation, cooking, serving, and cleaning up.
We involved the students in the design process to discuss what equipment, and colours should be used. It was great to be able to involve the students in the decision-making process and the students have really enjoyed helping to choose what they would like to see in the playground. Our next fundraising project will be for a school bus so we can get the students out and about.
We welcome any parent help on these days to support the cooking program. 22 Leigh News Welcome to our School Hello families and officially welcome back to the 2020 school year. A particular welcome to our new families be it in prep or who’ve joined us across the school. We have started the year on 187 enrolments, which is the biggest enrolment the school has ever had. Learning to Learn The year started a little differently in 2020 with our ‘Learning to Learn’ program. The first 7 days of school were designed around ensuring we developed a consistent, safe, orderly and engaging learning environment for the year. Students were part of developing the routines and expectations in their class. It was fantastic to see so many parents take us up on the invite of our open classroom afternoon. Both the junior school and senior school were buzzing with students keen to share what they’d done. Discoveries Senior students are taking part in ‘Discovery’ sessions which include Indonesian, Personal Learning, Digital Technologies and Inquiry. Individual subjects are taught by one senior teacher across the 3-6 year levels meaning students are able to engage with a range of teachers throughout the year. Young Leaders Conference 2020 This year all our year 6 students are invited to attend this conference in Melbourne. We believe the day is a valuable opportunity for our students to participate in this leadership training, to build their confidence, self-esteem and enthusiasm for being a young leader at Teesdale PS. The object of the day is to promote, educate, inspire and empower our students and our young inspiring leaders are looking forward to the event. Congratulations to our 2020 School Leaders: Leila, Isaac, Dan, Emma and Caitlyn as well as students elected to the Environment and Learning Committees. Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program Our Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program is entering a new phase this year as all students across the school get to access the program. The program introduces children to the concept of 'fork to plate’ which consists of the children learning the
TEESDALE PRIMARY SCHOOL process of raising seedlings, planting and harvesting a variety of herbs, fruits and vegetables. The children then produce a variety of foods in their cooking sessions. These sessions are based on the principal of using fresh ingredients and introducing the children to a variety of tastes and foods they may not have experienced. As part of the children’s Inquiry Discovery “Healthy Me”, we will be looking at different types of healthy alternatives for our school lunchboxes. The classes will commence with the basic skills of cutting, grating and slicing along with hygiene and safety. At the completion of each class the children come together for a communal tasting and to share their experiences with fellow class members. Mudbrick Café Dates for 2020 – Open Wednesdays (once a term) 11.30-12.15pm The Mudbrick Café provides a wonderful opportunity for students to engage in real life learning experiences. The Café opportunities include performances, serving, preparing food and greeting visitors. We welcome all visitors from the school and broader community. Dates for 2020 are: Mar 18th, Jun 17th, Sep 9t and Nov 25th. Parents’ Club Welcome to our new members and families. We look forward to an exciting year for the school with some fantastic opportunities to continue to positively contribute to the children’s’ learning at Teesdale PS. Important Dates Wednesday 11th March – First Wednesday for all Preps Monday 16th March – MVA Athletics Day Wednesday 18th March – Mudbrick Café Friday 20th March – Young Leaders Conference (Year 6)

FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK – MARCH 2020 Big ideas and projects often take significant time and commitment to make a reality, which is why we’re asking everyone to get involved with the Golden Plains Shire Community Vision 2040 Project. Facilitated by Council, the Community Vision 2040 will outline how the entire Golden Plains community can work together towards common goals and meet the Shire’s needs, both now and into the future. It will be used to guide strategic planning and decision-making for the future of Golden Plains Shire. Engagement for the Community Vision has been designed by the community, for the community. Last year, a Community Reference group was formed, representative of many demographics from townships across the Shire. Since then, the Community Reference Group has undertaken consultation training, and have shaped the current community engagement. Engagement is well underway, and there are a number of ways you can get involved to help shape the vision: •
Online at goldenplains.vic.gov.au/consultations
•
Fill out the paper survey included in the February edition of The Gazette
•
Pick up a postcard from one of Council’s Customer Service Centres in Bannockburn, Linton and Smythesdale
You can also chat with Council staff and Community Reference Group members at one of the remaining Community Vision 2040 conversation posts: •
4 to 8pm, Friday 27 March, Bannockburn Skate Park Competition, 3 Moore Street, Bannockburn
•
10am to 2pm, Saturday 28 March, Meredith Sharing Shed Community Action Day, 10 Wallace Street, Meredith
In February, conversation posts were held at the Shelford Duck Race and the Ross Creek-Smythes Creek Community Car Boot Sale. Thank you to all residents who stopped by to share their vision for our Shire. The survey only takes a few minutes, and asks: •
What do you love about Golden Plains?
•
What is your hope for Golden Plains in 2040?
•
What would you like to see in your community in 2040?
•
What you are willing to do to make this a reality?
To make sure the Golden Plains Community Vision 2040 is representative of the whole Shire, we’re also asking for which suburb or town you live in, your age, and your gender. The Community Vision 2040 survey is open for your ideas until 9am, Monday 30 March. I encourage all residents to get on board and help shape the Community Vision 2040 project today. Mayor Cr Owen Sharkey

Caring For Senior Pets
With improvements in health care and Veterinary treatments more and more of our pets are living well into their senior years. Senior pets have different care requirements than those of a younger pet.
Continuing with their vaccination schedule and parasite prevention program is still important in your senior pets healthcare. However our senior pets also have other healthcare needs. This fact i'm sure comes as no suprise to anyone. In this article we will touch on some of those early warning signs of aging and age related diseases. Some of these may include the following:
her long time love Tegan. The wedding was beautiful.
• Weight loss or weight gain • Bad breath
We wish them all the best for their future together.
• Excessive drinking and/or urination
They are an amazing couple !
• Behavioural changes
• Dificulty rising, walking or climbing stairs • Hearing loss
• Lumps and bumps • Persistent cough • Vision problems
It is common to assume these signs are a normal part of the aging process; however, these symptoms often indicate underlying age related disease.
Leigh News 35 Dental Radiographs
Lumps and Bumps - keeping a keen eye on these will ensure that possible
cancers or tumours are treated as quickly as possible. Dental Care - is important throughout your pet's life, but it becomes crucial as they enter their senior years. Infected gums and plaque-encrusted teeth are not only painful, they can lead to bigger health problems.
Arthritis - just like us pets get aching joints as they enter their senior years.
Arthritis is a common health condition amongst older animals and it can be extremely painful.
Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome - aka dementia has many similarities to Dental X-rays in pets are similar to those taken in humans.
Alzheimer's disease in humans. some of the symptoms to looks our for are: • Disorientation or confusion • Forgetting toilet training
An X-ray machine using small amounts of radiation, is used to see the inside of your pets teeth and those areas below the gum line that are hidden from view.
• Disturbance in sleep paterns
Dental radiographs can help our Vets evaluate the health of a tooth root and identify a variety of problems that are not visible just by looking at your pets teeth.
• Pets can not tell us when they feel unwell, and regular check-ups at least twice a tear are vital for any aging pet.
Bannockburn Veterinary Clinic is very pleased to be now able to offer this service to our patients. WELL DONE TO EVERYONE!!
• Barking for no reasons • Getting stuck in corners
We can now perform extensive blood and urine tests to check the inner working of our pets. These test are important for early disease detection. Don't assume it's old age, or that nothing can be done. Your pet may actually be in pain, and something can be done!

June, in August!
Leigh News

She cried as we said goodbye at the airport, and so did I. Perhaps a familiar scene to others but a devastating one for me. No one ever cried saying good-bye to me before, and it was only then that I realise the depth of our relationship. She had arrived with the usual suitcases, a husband, and a packet of letters tied with a green bow, dating 1963 –1964. She had saved most of my letters with silly, unimportant events of my teenage years recorded on the email striped paper, bearing addresses that have long been left behind. At first I couldn’t believe she saved them; now that I’ve met her; I can. Her name is June; she arrived my pen-pal and left my sister.
was suddenly a period of months when I receive no mail from her. Finally word came that Leigh had broken his neck in the accident, and she had been badly hurt. My letter in response was returned “address unknown”. I was devastated. Our many moves had buried the address book with her parents’ address I had used 25 years before and I found a void with the thought that perhaps her injuries had eventually proved fatal, and Leigh, and the children had moved on. I was only a penpal of hers, after all. I was about to try and contact the Australian ambassador when her letter arrived. She had moved, had a series of eye operations after the doctors Thirty-five years ago she was a young girl of 12, realized the double vision was not correcting itself, sitting in the classroom in Geelong, Australia filling and discovered her mail was not being forwarded as out the forms to have a pen friend from somewhere she thought. So our relationship resumed as usual. else. Thirty-five years ago, I was mourning the A recent letter stunned me with the news loss of my best friend to a bicycle accident, and, that Leigh in his mid-40s, was about to accept a as I remember, answered an ad in a magazine to be retirement package from his employer, outfitting a matched with someone my age. So we met through bus to travel in for “roughing it smoothly”, and they our letters, and over the years we exchanged many were about to set out to work and travel throughout things from stuffed koala bears to phonograph Australia. Amazed at that news, I was surprised to records of “Waltzing Matilda” and the infamous learn that the first item of business was to come to Maine accents of the “Burt and I” stories. We wrote see me. The suggestion came from her sister who of families and daily activities and sometimes it was felt they had been through such a hard time that hard to think of what to say. they should use some of the accident settlement for We told each other about our marriages, pleasure. The money was earmarked for the bus, by children, and jobs, and through letters I worried him; America by her. when she and her family left home for a five and a half months trip to travel throughout Australia. I grieved when the health of her third child was in question, and we all rejoiced when she and her husband, Leigh, survived a terrible car accident whose effects still linger with them now.
Surprisingly, my first reaction was fright. What if after thirty-five years she discovered she really didn’t like me? What if they found us as square as we fear we are and came all this way only to wish they were home? Her friends, rightly so, told them to go to Disneyworld, and I secretly agreed. She In fact it was at that time that I lost June. There told them she wanted to see me, and I was deeply touched. I didn’t see how I could be better than Disneyworld!

The above true story was given to me for publication in the Leigh News, if I felt it worthy? I read the first paragraph and knew instantly it should be shared, but it was a bit too long. I have chosen to publish it as a serial, perhaps not as long as "Blue Hills", but I do trust you all enjoy if over the next months to come, PeterT.

New Lions Club Shed

Lions Club of Inverleigh – Leigh Valley
For the past couple of years, your Lions Club has been collecting waste newspapers to sell & raise money to put back into the community through various projects. The community has engaged with this project by depositing their waste papers in bins provided at the Inverleigh Hall & other locations around Shelford, Teesdale & Bannockburn. Up until now, we have been storing the papers at the premises of our President David Walpole but the volume has now exceeded the available space. Therefore, the Lions Club has constructed a new shed at the Inverleigh Sporting complex in which to store the papers prior to despatch. We would ask Inverleigh residents to continue to deposit their used papers in the bin at the Inverleigh hall, Bannockburn residents in the bin in the library alcove. In the past 12 months the Lions club has raised funds through collection of waste newspapers ($6500), Bunnings sausage sizzle,
car parking at the Air Show & manning of the Geelong show gates. The club has supported – mowing & maintenance of the Inverleigh RSL premises & hall, the Inverleigh produce & lifestyle market through a sausage sizzle, Food for Families October to December, support of the annual Shitbox Rally in aid of cancer research, winter collection of warm clothes & blankets etc for the homeless, Duck Race bbq at Shelford each year, Australia Day breakfast at Teesdale each year, Good Friday Appeal bbq at Inverleigh each year, hay for farmers relief plus the recent Inverleigh fundraiser for bushfire relief which raised over $5000. The club is also called upon from time to time to assist residents during times of need &
school students otherwise unable to attend school excursions/camps etc.
