The Progress Association has been actively working towards improving the amenity of Inverleigh for over 40 years. Of course all such organisations need volunteers and the Association is no exception. Without them nothing happens. If you have some ideas for the town you would like to achieve, you are welcome to join us and help achieve them. Some of the projects completed by the Progress Association include: The Federation Bridge which was built to commemorate the centenary of Federation in 2001. Walking Tracks were established with lots of support from the community, including fencing and tree planting. Public Toilets Progress Association members worked for many years with Council to have the old toilets removed and a new block built, which did not detract from the entrance to our town. They are used more than any other toilets in the Shire. The Clock a new clock was recently installed on the clock tower in our main street, clearly visable from the General Store across the road.
The Inverleigh Historical Society was formed in 2004. It operates under the auspices of the Inverleigh Mechanics Institute and Public Hall Committee. Our Aims are to collect and preserve items of local historic interest and to promote research and interest in local history. We welcome all donations to our collection or the opportunity to copy material. We are most grateful to the many people who have kept meet in the Inverleigh Public Hall 0n the 4th Monday of each Month @ 8pm the Historical Society in mind as they sorted through their own collec(Except December & January) tions. VISITORS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME We undertake many interesting projects and have enjoyable President: Katrina Robson meetings, which you are welcome to attend.
ERIC STUART PEEL Eric Stuart Peel was born 1st April 1932 in Pakington Street, Geelong West in a Private Hospital. Third son of Eric and Jessie Peel, brother of Jack, William, known as Bill and Alan. Stuart started school in 1938 at the age of 6, and the best part of school was playtime, playing football and cricket with his mates. He obtained a merit certificate grade 8 and left school to work on the farm with his father and brother Jack. Stuart was a member of the PFA (Presbyterian Fellowship Association) and played midweek table tennis and attended dances in Geelong and surrounding areas, including Barrabool which is where he came across a farmers daughter named “Margaret Grigg” at Ceres, who became the love of his life. Stuart and Margaret were married on 16 April 1955, at Church of England Barrabool. Wayne ,Bronwyn and Delma bought into the world with loving parents, and through primary school dad was a member of school council. Playing cricket was Stuart’s passion, playing into his 35th season including Ballarat Country week for over 30 years. Dad captained Inverleigh, for a total of 9 seasons, winning A Grade Premierships in 58/59 and 60/61. Scoring 5,532 runs at an average of 23.74, batting in nearly every position including opening for a number of seasons, scoring a few centuries along the way. He kept wickets taking many catches and effected many stumpings. Stuart was awarded Life memberships at both Inverleigh Cricket Club and the Leigh Cricket Association in 1982, holding many administration positions at both levels. After Cricket dad joined the golf club where he enjoyed playing club and Veterans golf, also looking after

the golf coarse. Stuart enjoyed the camaraderie of playing sport, at club and association level, in the years since he has valued the catchups and the reminiscing with team mates and opposition. Stuart was a member of the CFA for over 50 years, he was communications officer for many years and was awarded honorary life membership of the Inverleigh Fire Brigade in 1993. Until 1970 Inverleigh fire Brigade completed many kilometers of vegetation reduction burn offs on the Hamilton Hwy between Wingeel and Murgeboulic. Stuart was always community minded and enjoyed meeting and chatting to everyone, talking about local history and family ties. Wayne Peel

Council congratulates the worthy winners of the Golden Plains Shire Council Community Awards 2020. The Golden Plains Shire Council (GPSC) Community Awards 2020 were presented today at Council’s Australia Day event. Following a Citizenship Ceremony, all award nominees were recognised and this year’s winners announced. The Golden Plains Shire Council Citizen of the Year 2020 is Brad McKenzie of Bannockburn. Brad has worked closely with mental health charity Black Dog Institute over a number of years as both a fundraiser and Volunteer Community Presenter. In 2014, Brad walked from Mildura to Bannockburn, raising more than $13,000 and he has since travelled Australia as a volunteer, speaking to schools, community groups, sporting clubs and medical professionals about the Black Dog Institute, mental health, and his own personal story of living with depression and anxiety. The institute selected Brad as an ambassador for its recent One Foot Forward walking challenge campaign that raised more than $6 million in 2020. Brad also undertook a fundraising walk at the Great Wall of China in 2019 and plans to complete the Larapinta Trail in 2021. The GPSC Citizen of the Year 2020 nominees were Sharon Boyd of Lethbridge, Cathy Bushell of Ross Creek, Lynette (Lyn) Galtry of Teesdale, Brendan Johnston of Smythes Creek, Belinda Koenig of Scarsdale, Adam Liversage of Haddon, Hayley Quach of Grenville, Catherine Schurmann of Maude, Kylie Turville of Linton, and Linda Wong of Meredith. The Golden Plains Shire Council Senior Citizen of the Year 2020 is Damian Baker of Inverleigh. Damian is a volunteer at the public open space to the north of the Leigh River in Inverleigh and was involved in the plans to redevelop the space as a recreation space for locals and visitors. He has mowed and maintained the area for almost 22 years, coordinating tree planting days, keeping an eye on furniture and the Federation Bridge, and organising contractors to manage the weeds and other hazards. Damien also volunteers at the local cemetery, mowing the lawns and helping with general maintenance and beautification. The GPSC Senior Citizen of the Year 2020 nominees were June Amor of Bannockburn, Rod Draper of Bannockburn, Dorothy Heylar of Bannockburn, and Val Robertson of Inverleigh. The Golden Plains Shire Council Young Citizen of the Year 2020 is Sophie Busuttil of Smythes Creek. Sophie was nominated for her generous acts of charity. In 2020, the Year Nine student donated her hair to Sustainable Salons, who distribute ponytails to charitable organisations to become wigs for those suffering from medically induced hair-loss conditions. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Sophie also supported the youth mental health organisation Headspace Ballarat, by creating and selling “clay friends” pins and donating more than $200 to the organisation. The GPSC Young Citizen of the Year 2020 nominees were William and Emily Bradley of Batesford, Rachel and Megan Kaiser of Maude, Charlie Thompson of Lethbridge, and Jakob Wray of Bannockburn. The Golden Plains Shire Council Community Impact Award 2020 was presented to the Smythesdale Cemetery Trust. The Smythesdale Cemetery Trust was nominated for its significant contribution to the Smythesdale community. A volunteer organisation with a combined total of 185 years of experience, the Trust serves the community by providing

cemetery services, maintaining the cemetery in operational condition and assisting with genealogical research – with its longest-serving member having volunteered for 42 years. The Trust operates under the auspice of the Department of Health and Human Services, and holds four meetings per year, plus site inspections and regular working bees. With cemeteries considered an essential service during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Trust members have continued to maintain the cemetery throughout the challenges of 2020. The GPSC Community Impact Award 2020 nominees were Batesford-Fyansford-Stonehaven Landcare Group (BFS Landcare), Equihands Youth Leadership of Meredith, and Woady Yaloak Warriors of Haddon and surrounding towns. Mayor Cr Helena Kirby congratulated all winners and nominees of this year’s GPSC Community Awards. “Congratulations to the 23 individuals and four community groups that were nominated for this year’s Golden Plains Shire Council Community Awards. Today we heard a wonderful collection of stories about the many volunteer hours and valuable contributions these impressive nominees have made across the Shire in 2020. “Our four Award-winners are exceptional examples of civic pride and on behalf of Council and the Golden Plains community, I’d like to thank and acknowledge Brad McKenzie, Sophie Busuttil, Damian Baker and the Smythesdale Cemetery Trust as the winners of the Golden Plains Shire Council Community Awards 2020.” The Golden Plains Shire Council (GPSC) Community Awards 2020 are an opportunity to formally acknowledge extraordinary individuals and community groups who make an outstanding contribution to Golden Plains Shire. ENTRANCE SIGN-EAST INVERLEIGH
Our much admired town entrance signs are now part of our visual landscape and this image taken by Andrea Bolton, shows just how well they grace the highway. First mooted in 2009 and adopted as a project by the Inverleigh Progress Association, planning had many “fits and starts. Finance, planning, design and selecting of a stonemason resulted in an October 2018 start and we all watched with interest as the beautiful stonework by David Long took shape. Finally the name was attached in early 2020 The full story on the journey and completion of these wall can be found in the Leigh News of March

"INTRODUCING OUR DENTIST" Tiana is a general dentist who has been working in Geelong since 2013. She completed her Bachelor of Dental Science degree, with honours, from the University of Western Australia in 2012. She has also previously completed a Bachelor of Science. Tiana is an active member in the dental community, not only is she an Australian Dental Association member but has served on the committee of ADA Victorian Branch “Southern Group” as both Secretary and Treasurer from 2014-2020. She loves being a general family dentist; she aims to address your immediate dental concerns but also provide comprehensive care and oral education with a goal towards long term stability. Tiana’s favourite patients are the little ones and she believes a trip to the dentist can be a fun experience. She is often complemented on her manner; her gentle nature and good humour putting patients at ease. She’s had patients laughing during an extraction and snoring during a root canal! Tiana grew up in Brazil and Perth (she misses the sunshine and beaches terribly!) but moved to Victoria after completing her studies. She found a home in Geelong and has since settled here having met her partner and welcoming a baby daughter into their family. When she’s not playing with teeth, Tiana loves going for road trips, camping, playing in the snow and baking. We are open: Tuesday's 9am till 7:30pm Friday's 9am to 4pm Saturdays: by appointment.

FEBRUARY 2021 CALENDAR
“George Buchanan”
This photograph is another by Thomas Hannay who was an early travelling photographer in the Western District. His work was described in the February 2020 edition of the Leigh News. Part of the Inverleigh Historical Society collection and also online at the State Library of Victoria, this image taken in 1858 at Golf Hill, Shelford, has several points of interest. It show George Russell holding one of his daughters, the beautiful brickwork on the Golf Hill stables but it is the stallion, “George Buchanan” that is the topic for this article. Coming to District of Port Phillip from Van Diemen’s Land in 1835, George Russell rose from living in a dirt floored hut in the Leigh valley, to owning 28,000 acres and building a magnificent home. On a visit to Scotland in 1852 he wrote “I have within the past few days purchased a Cart Stallion to send out. He is a fine animal, three years old, has taken some prizes: price 130 pounds ($260) …… but I believe he was bred by a Mr Buchanan about Strathblane”. The story continues “ He stands with all charges including freight upwards of 300 pounds so we hope he will arrive safe. A man, John Watts, has been engaged to out with the Horse and take charge of him for the voyage and engagement for two years”. An invoice for the transportation on the “Helen” shows provision of a box and fodder for the horse, 3 barrels Oats, 8 barrels Beans, 7 barrels Barley, 2 bar-

rels Linseed, 1 hundredweight Carrots, 1 hundredweight Turnips, 10 bales Hay and 1200 gallons of water. Now the journey took 169 days and this does not seem enough fodder for the horse. No wonder after his return to Shelford, George Russell wrote to his agents in Scotland “You will have heard before receipt of this that the Horse “George Buchanan” arrived alive, although very much reduced in condition and in a very weak state; the Groom informed me that the box you had made for him with the other trappings was not nearly strong enough, & that he knocked the bottom of it out before he was many days at sea, and stood on the ships deck…” The total cost to bring the horse to Shelford was 554 pounds, 12 shillings and 5 pence, a little over the original estimate. “George Buchanan” attracted a stud fee of seven guineas, and the “old horse” was sold on in 1861 at the price of 310 pounds, where he won prizes at the Skipton Show. There are lots of published stories on the difficulties for passengers on the route to Australia but this horse and his groom must have had a terrible time. This image taken five years after that journey shows a proud owner and a horse returned to health. Information gathered from the Clyde Company Papers, Vol. V, and the LaTrobe Journal March 2020. Inverleigh Community Survey Youth Facilities and Services 2021 Inverleigh Community, we need your help and feedback! Throughout 2020, we heard the repeated call that more facilities and services are needed for Inverleigh youth aged between 12 – 20 years old. So a like-minded group of locals have teamed up with the Inverleigh Progress Association, to establish what youth facilities and services are needed via a survey.
We are asking questions like the following:
-Why do you think it is important to have facilities in Inverleigh that are suitable for youth? -What facilities for youth do you believe are needed in Inverleigh? -What facilities in Inverleigh are currently being used by youth? For the month of February, we will have the survey open to the community. Here is the link:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/InverleighCommunitySurvey This is the starting point! We hope to use the results to guide us in our approach to prioritising future development projects, and allow us to lobby Council for the facilities and services identified by the Inverleigh community. This is a whole community survey, but we especially need the Inverleigh youth to step up and tell us what you want and need!!

G'Day from the Golden Pens – Write Side Up writing group.
It's been about 10 months since our last article in this magnificent newsletter and what a time we have all had. Covid 19 has hit the world for a six and 2021 doesn't seem to be much better at this early stage, but things at the group have been progressing well. We have managed to stay in touch with each other and we have had some fairly steep learning curves as well. We have managed to conquer Zoom, (sort of) and face book rooms, and when we were allowed we had meetings out in the open at Bunjil, the Lions park in Bannockburn, Turtle Bend at Teesdale and Shelford cricket ground and as restrictions eased we managed to have outdoor meetings at each others homes. So all in all we have managed 2020 quite admirably. The Golden Plains shire also got in contact with us to create a project with creatives all across the shire that were having difficulties meeting up. The end result is a 5-minute film titled Zoom Me A River, which was shown publicly at the Citizens Award Ceremony on Australia Day. This film created by filmmaker Leonie Van Elk, included writers, artist, musicians and readers and it was done entirely over zoom. Hats must go off for Kim Biggs, Arts and Culture Advisor at the shire for such a brilliant idea. So many people were involved in this project done entirely over the airwaves, and if you get to see this it is well worth the 5 minutes it takes. It is available on the Golden Plains web site and our

Belonging to a Global Community What a year last year has been. I am thankful that our response to Covid-19 here in Australia we put people, their health, and being community before a purely financial side of economy. Economy originally meant all things, money and welfare, in balance. And, although we have much relief here in Australia, we are still conscious of the power of the virus in other parts of the world. It is a shame when we allowed economy to be purely about money. In 2018 I established a registered charity called www.foundationsouthsudan.org.au to provide university scholarships for South Sudanese still resident in East Africa. Our newest and poorest country in our global community is in need of an educated leadership. I stated to one South Sudanese contact that I did not see the point in celebrating New Year because the stuff of last year was still present. I suddenly realised my privileged position when he replied that they celebrate it simply because God had enabled them to live another year. Only 4% of charitable giving goes to overseas development and relief services, international
peace, security, and affairs, humanitarian relief supplies, and all causes outside Australia (The 2020 NFP State of the Industry COVID-19 Report. Little Phil.); an equal and smallest percentage contributed to animal welfare. The great lesson to be learned from these times is that we need to be conscious of those peoples living in countries that do not have an established economy to support them during times of development and difficulty. I think it was Keith Suter who argued a part of the reason Australia (and New Zealand) has done so well in the fight against Covid-19 is because we are community focussed; willing to make the sacrifice of physical distancing, isolation, mask wearing for the protection not just ourselves, but others. We remember that in this day and age we have access, and belong, to a global community parts of which we have not holidayed which need our support. The Revd Dr Timothy Smith PiC Anglican Parish of Inverleigh +Bannockburn+Meredith
There is no argument that working dogs are a valuable and helpful asset to farmers and it stands to reason, if your dog travels on the back of your ute, you need to take extra care to avoid exposing them to heat stress on hot days. While it is legal to allow appropriately restrained dogs to travel on the back of utes, dogs being left in the sun for long periods can quickly dehydrate or even die from heat stress. Adequate shelter, for example a fixed canopy, needs to be provided to protect tethered dogs from extreme temperatures. A lot of utes and tray backs these days are made of metal and will heat up quickly and could easily burn dogs’ paws. New regulations introduced in Victoria in December 2019, require that when the temperature is 28 degrees or above that an area of insulating material be placed on the metal tray to protect the dog from the metal surface. Ensure dogs kept in cages have adequate ventilation, particularly when the vehicle is not moving, and ensure all dogs are given regular access to cool water.
Victoria’s Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act requires dogs travelling in the back of utes, trailers or open tray trucks to be tethered or caged in a manner that prevents them from falling from the vehicle. The only exemption is when dogs are actively working livestock. The tether should only be long enough to permit the dog to stand, lie down and move about but not so long that it could potentially let the dog fall off the vehicle and be dragged or strangled. Tethering dogs should always be regarded as a temporary, short term method of restraint. In addition, it is an offence to leave an animal unattended inside a motor vehicle when the outside temperature is 28 degrees or above, so be sure to make appropriate arrangements when you are travelling with animals. For further advice please contact the RSPCA, your local veterinarian or Agriculture Victoria veterinary or animal health officer, or in NSW your Local Land Services.

News from Inverleigh Bowls Club
At long last lawn bowls has finally commenced. Inverleigh have one team in mid week in division 4 and have played two matches for two losses, and have two teams in the Saturday competition, division 3 with two wins from 2 and division 9, two losses from 2. While division 3 has fared well so far division 3 and 9 are starting to improve and hopefully wins are not too far away. The lack of match play practice is a factor and due to our season cut back to 9 matches there is not a great deal of time to strike form, the plus is that we are able to bowl once more and have socialising at the clubrooms after practice and match days. Barefoot bowls is due to start on Thursday 28th January from 6.00pm, $5.00 per adult entry fee, so if you want try your skills at bowls come along and have a go, have fun and enjoy the hospitality of our club. The club presentation night for season 2019/20 was held at the Inverleigh Hotel on the 6th January. An enjoyable meal and hospitality of staff was very appreciated. Awards were presented as follows:

Switch on to Succulents
Leigh News
23
a reprint of an article from 2016 by Christine Windle of Garden Gate Nursery. Succulents are proving their worth as house plants, in gardens and in pots because they are perfect for our dryer climate. They come in a wide range of colours and forms and are great value in a garden, providing a sculptural touch. And they flower – and what a range of gorgeous, weird and wonderful flowers they can have. I have to admit that I have come quite late to succulents, but now that I am learning more about them and am growing them myself, I am a true convert. ‘Succulent’ describes any plant with thick fleshy leaves or stems. Think of cactus, sedum, crassula, agave, pigface, aloe, echeveria, yukka, kalanchoe, aeonium and you are thinking of succulents. To see an amazing collection of succulents from around the world, visit the Geelong Botanic Gardens where they can be found in the 21st Century garden and at the far end of the gardens near the Pelargonium Collection house. Succulents have evolved water storage tissues which allow them to grow in situations too dry for most plants. In general, succulents like warmth, low humidity and well drained conditions. They thrive in direct light but can also adapt to low light, which makes them perfect for indoors or under a tree where it is too dry for other ground covers. While succulents need some moisture, allow the soil to dry out fully before watering. Give frost sensitive species some protection or plant them in pots which can be brought up on to the verandah or moved to a sheltered spot. Don’t over-fertilise – just a little slow release fertiliser or a scattering of compost - treating succulents ‘mean’ will give you the best colour. In my garden, general neglect, other than a tidy up now and then, has kept my succulents (and me) very happy. There is a succulent for every need – ground cover, clumping, tall, draping, edging, cool colours, warm colours – but, and it is a big but, make sure that you plant them with plants that will like similar conditions. There is no point choosing drought proof plants and then causing them to rot because they get too much moisture when you water their neighbours. Raised beds will enable you to grow succulents in damper, less well-drained areas. Mass planting in contrasting groups makes a great show of foliage and flower repetition from afar and provides detailed enjoyment close up. Sedum Autumn Joy is particularly spectacular with pink blooms in late summer that age to a bronze colour, against beautiful sage green leaves. Other gorgeous sedums are the ground cover dragons’ blood – green and maroon leaves which sends up spires of bright cerise flowers in mid-summer and sedum album, a low grower with masses of tiny white star flowers touched with shell pink. The latter two have been very popular with children planting fairy gardens, searching for smaller leaves and dainty flowers. Pots provide lots of scope for a collection of contrasting succulents or for a celebration of one species. I have half barrels with succulents in pots in them laid out like patchwork quilts. Be creative with containers – kitchen ware, baskets, crates, terrariums – just remember the rule about good drainage and either make a drainage hole or be very careful not to over water. Planting taller succulents in containers bonsais them, making them smaller than similar ones in the garden. You can buy special succulent potting mixes or you can make a gritty 50/50 mix of ordinary potting mix and very coarse sand, crushed rock or gravel. Succulent roots do not take in water from direct contact but absorb moisture from the air, so you need to create a medium which will have air pockets in it. Give potted succulents a drink every week or so in summer and about once a month in winter – check if it is needed first. Once you start planting succulents, you will notice and appreciate them everywhere and your interest will grow. I am sure that you will have as much pleasure as I have with such easy care and rewarding plants.
Happy gardening!

TABLE OF CONTENTS •Common health concerns for you pet •Vaccination
Common health concerns for you pet It is important to be aware of potential problems for your pets so you can always protect them. In this newsletter we will touch on some of the most common health concerns our Vets treat at the clinic.
Ear Infections:
Microchip Source Number
This is just a reminder as of July 2020 any person having a pet microchipped, that was born after July 1 2020 must apply for a source number. As authorised implanters we must collect and include a source number as part of the microchip registration form. If any of our clients need assistance with this process we are very happy to help.
Grooming We are happy to let you know Phoebe, our groomer is now available on the following days at the clinic. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. Our clients who have already met and had their pets groomed by Phoebe think she is awesome. Telephone the clinic to organise an appointment and meet Phoebe if you haven't already.
Ear infections are sore! Moisture and debris can become trapped in the ear canal, creating the ideal environment for yeast and bacterial infections to develop. Foreign bodies such as grass seeds can become embedded in the ear canal. Common signs of ear infections are strong odour, scratching ears or shaking the head, swelling around the ear. If you feel your pet may have an ear infection contact the clinic. Owners should not attempt home treatments, as these can be harmful.
Skin Conditions: Our pets can develop allergies and skin conditions in the same way thar humans can. Unfortunately they cannot tell us what the issues are. Skin issues are prevalent in both dogs and cats and can cause pain, itchiness and discomfort. Some of the symptoms of skin problems include scratching, excessive licking and biting at the area. Hair loss, crusty skin and ulceration. Preventative treatments are to use regular flea protection and keep your pet's environment clean. Food allergies and sensitivities can cause itchy skin also. The best solution is to work closely with our vets to find out which food or enviromental allergen is the cause.
Dental Disease: Our pets accumulate bacteria, debris and plaque on the outside of their teeth, which overtime forms tartar, gigivitis and eventually tooth loss. They can also damage their teeth chewing on hard objects or by trauma. 70% of dogs and cats have some form of dental disease by the age of three. Dental disease causes pain and inflamation in the mouth. Symptoms may include bad breath, pawing at the mouth, drooling, dropping food from the mouth or a reluctance to chew hard food. Rabbit's incisors, or front teeth, grow continuously throughout their life. Normally, chewing on their food and on wood blocks keeps them a normal length. Sometimes this is not enough and the incisors become overgrown. The rabbit will be unable to eat properly and unable to groom. Treatment involves our vets filing the incisors. If you think your pet is showing signs of dental disease it is important that treatment is started early.
Leigh News 31 Horse Health Owning a horse can
be a rewarding and enjoyable experience. As with any other pet many important responsibilities are associated with owning a horse. Here are a few of the basic requirements to keep your horse healthy and happy. Horse must have access to an adequate amount of good quality food in the form of roughage (pasture, hay or chaff) Clean waterr must always be available. Horses need shelter from extremes of sun, wind and rain. Worm your horse regularly to pevent worms building up in the stomach. Many worming pastes recommend worming every 6-8 weeks. Vaccinate your adult horse against Tetanus and Strangles yearly. Have a farrier trim the hooves on a regular basis to prevent them chipping of becoming too long. Teeth should be check by a Veterinarian at least once a year. If not treated they can become sharp and cause pain and mouth injuries.
Gastrointestinal Worms:
Intestinal worms appear in both cats and dogs, with different types including tapeworm, hookworms, whipworms and roundworms. Intestinal worms take up residence in your pets intestines and feed of their blood and the food in their intestines causing a wide aray of symptoms. These parasites can cause severe illness and in some cases are potentially fatal. Symptoms include vomiting, diarhoea, weight loss and anaemia. If untreated puppies and kittens can fail to thrive, present with a pot belly and can die.
All dogs and cats should receive regular worming prevention Like dogs and cats, rabbits are susceptible to various internal parasites. Correct treatment needs to be advised by our vets, as many products used on other pets can be toxic to rabbits.
Vaccination
Keeping your pets vaccination up to date
is crucial for a healthy lifestyle and proper development. Vaccines exist to prevent your pet from falling ill. They provide immunity from a range of infectious diseases that can affect both humans and animals. Vaccination is one of the most common veterinary procedures. Vaccinating your pet against preventable disease is a key component to having a healthy pet. All pet rabbits in Australia should be vaccinated against rabbit calicivirus. This disease is almost always fatal and death occurs rapidly from respiratory and heart failure.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has provisionally approved the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for use in Australia. Senator for Victoria Sarah Henderson said this news would add further confidence to Australia’s vaccine strategy. “This is an important moment for the people of Victoria and for the whole of Australia,” Senator Henderson said. “The approval of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine comes after rigorous and independent assessment by the TGA, which shows it meets Australian standards for safety, quality and efficacy.” A priority group of Australians are expected to now receive their first dose of the vaccine as soon as it can be received from Pfizer and the necessary checks are undertaken by the TGA, prior to its distribution. The vaccine will be provided free to Australians, with a priority group of Australians expected to receive their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in late February and early March. Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the TGA approval was an important step in the fight against COVID-19. “I welcome the TGA’s approval of the Pfizer vaccine, with our own Australian experts finding it is safe, effective and of a high standard,” the Prime Minister said. “Australians should take confidence in the thorough and careful approach taken by our world-class safety regulator. “Our priority has always been to keep Australians safe and protect lives and livelihoods. Today’s approval is another big step forward for our community, particularly in the protection of our most vulnerable people.” Minister for Health Greg Hunt said the-world class regulators at the TGA have been working tirelessly to introduce a safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine in Australia. “The TGA’s processes are I believe the best in the world and we have ensured that they are thorough.” Minister Hunt said. “The TGA has placed safety above all else.” “Australia’s high bar has been met; the vaccine has been approved as effective in stopping severe disease. I thank all those involved in the development and assessment of this COVID-19 vaccine, including the researchers, Pfizer, BioNTech and the medical experts at the TGA who have worked around the clock and over Christmas.” “This approval and the upcoming roll out of the vaccine will play an important part in our ability to manage the pandemic in 2021.” “Australia’s vaccination program has been based on the medical advice from the medical expert panel led by Professor Brendan Murphy. As a result we are in the fortunate position of having secured 140 million doses of vaccine, one of the highest per capita rates in the world. We will continue to review the medical advice and monitor and adapt to developments around the world,” Minister Hunt said. The Government continues to work with Pfizer on the final date of delivery of vaccines, noting that Pfizer has experienced some temporary production delays from its European manufacturing plant as it ramps up production to meet extraordinary global demand. The Government’s latest advice remains that the first doses of Pfizer are expected to arrive and be rolled out in late February. Final dates will be confirmed by Pfizer shortly and are subject to shipping and distribution. In Australia the vaccine will be rolled out in five phases over the coming months and, over time, will involve more than 1,000 vaccination administration sites. The Australian Government, states and territories, regulators and the health and medical sectors are working together to finalise arrangements under the Australian Vaccination Strategy and detailed roll out plans. As the rollout begins across 30-50 hospital sites, people who need protection the most will get the vaccine first. This includes aged care and disability care residents and workers, frontline health care workers, and quarantine and border workers. The priority groups have been determined based on the advice of the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) which oversees Australia’s highly successful immunisation program.

GOLDEN PLAINS SHIRE COUNCIL MEDIA RELEASE Date: Wednesday 20 January, 2021
TENDERS APPROVED TO GET WORKS UNDERWAY
At last night’s January Council Meeting, Council awarded tenders for three of its major projects for 2021. Inverleigh Change Room and Social Space Upgrade
Council awarded Bowden Corporation Pty Ltd the $1,655,337.40 construction contract for the Inverleigh Change Rooms and Social Space Upgrade. The project will deliver two new female friendly/unisex change rooms with first aid room, massage room and storage spaces; an upgrade of the existing sports pavilion change rooms and toilets; extension of the social space; and upgrade of the kitchen, bar and cool room facilities. The upgrade is funded by $1,527,300 from the Victorian Government’s Community Sport Infrastructure Stimulus Program, $500,000 from the Australian Government’s Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications, $80,730 from the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, and $72,000 from the Inverleigh Sporting Complex Committee Inc. Other components of the project, including a new septic system will be delivered separately to the construction tender. Bannockburn and District Bowls Club Upgrade The construction contract for the Bannockburn and District Bowls Club Upgrade was awarded to SportsBuild Pty Ltd for the tendered sum of $603,560. The Bannockburn and District Bowls Club Upgrade will see a new 34.6m by 37.6m bowling green constructed, including drainage system and a synthetic surface. The project will also include the installation of 100Lux lighting, perimeter paving, seating, shelters and boundary fencing. Council has contributed $274,400 towards the project, with the Victorian Government’s Sport and Recreation Victoria providing $250,000 and a further $140,000 from the Bannockburn Bowls Club. At the meeting, Council agreed to redirect $96,270 in funding from the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure that had been previously allocated to the Inverleigh Change Rooms project to the Bannockburn and District Bowls Club Upgrade. Meredith-Shelford Road Widening Stage 2 Council resolved to award the $831,683.08 construction contract for the Meredith-Shelford Road Widening Stage 2 to Bitu-Mill (Civil) Pty Ltd. Approximately 2km of Meredith-Shelford Road from the intersection with Lower Plains Road in Meredith will be upgraded to support a safer transportation network to the nearby Golden Plains Food Production Precinct. This project follows the $1 million Stage 1 works approved last year to widen 2km of the road, and is funded by Council’s Roads to Recovery funding allocation from the Australian Government. Mayor Cr Helena Kirby says these major projects are good examples of Council partnering with Government and the community to deliver better facilities and infrastructure in Golden Plains Shire. “Council is committed to delivering a number of quality capital works projects for the community this year, with many only a reality thanks to the funding support from the State and Federal Governments, and the community groups who will benefit greatly. “With infrastructure projects crucial to delivering jobs and the region’s economic recovery, these projects are needed now more than ever. With the tenders awarded for the Inverleigh Sporting Complex Upgrade, Bannockburn Bowls Club Upgrade and Meredith-Shelford Road Widening, we look forward to seeing shovels in the ground soon.” – ENDS –
