Inverleigh's new skate park extension recently hosted a Skate Park Competition open to all ages and abilities. As you can see from the photo above, there were plenty of young people attending with plenty of ability. The final construction of the park is almost completed with the permanent surface of the basketball court now in place. Please be patient and wait for the construction fencing to be removed before using the basketball court. This will benefit the long term life of the surface.
This great faciltity for Inverleigh and district will be there for years to come. And thanks Clancy, for a great photo. PeterT. FULL Size advert on back page. Come along and enjoy the fun

WANNON DESERVES ACTION ON THE COST OF LIVING
Australians are poorer than they were two and a half years ago according to the Senate Cost of Living Committee.
The Committee held more than twenty hearings across Australia and received more than 1,500 submissions and responses to its community survey throughout its inquiry into the cost of living crisis.
The Final Report made nine recommendations across four areas: economic and fiscal policy, supermarket regulation, housing and construction, and charities and not-for-profits. Member for Wannon Dan Tehan called on the Albanese Labor Government to adopt the recommendations of the Report as a matter of priority.
“This report spells out clearly that Labor’s policies are making the cost of living crisis worse and this is something that our community knows all too well.
“Despite the Prime Minister’s promise that Australians would be better off under Labor, everyone is feeling poorer because of high inflation, high interest rates and high energy bills.
“Everywhere I go constituents are telling me that the cost of living is the number one issue and now we have the evidence to show that Labor is making the problem worse.”
“The people of Wannon have been abandoned by Labor in this cost of living crisis and it’s high time we saw some action from the Albanese Government in providing sustainable cost of living relief,” Mr Tehan concluded.

Inverleigh
River View
This rural river scene was taken early one morning by the Leigh River when everything was quiet and peaceful.
The rivers of Inverleigh, both the Barwon and the Leigh, have long been a pathway connecting the regions, providing food and water. They have also been a source of power, a place for work and for recreation. When gently flowing, as in the photo, all is calm but at times over the years there has been the issue of rising water levels causing, for some, a heightened burst of activity to save stock and homes.
December is the time for reflection of the year that has ended and to make plans for the coming year. Sometimes we look back with sadness, sometimes happiness and sometimes we think 'Where has the year gone?', but hopefully many can reflect and remember the great times with family and friends, new additions to family, places travelled and perhaps moving to a new home. Looking ahead and making resolutions is something we often do in the new year but instead of “I’m going on a diet, I’m giving up ..??” (Resolutions
that can be hard to maintain), be kind to yourself and make a too do list. Enjoy a picnic by the river, swim with the dolphins, read Grimm’s fairy tales or another book that has been waiting for some time, eat something you have never tried before, watch a musical or get a letter to the editor printed. Everybody’s list is their own, some are quite long, but there is a sense of achievement at crossing things off your list and undertaking a variety of new experiences.
Whatever is planned for now and the future, be happy and stay safe.
From the Historical Society of Inverleigh we wish you Season's Greetings and a fortunate New Year and hope to see you wandering, riding, swimming or fishing at the rivers sometime soon. Bronwyn Price.
The Inverleigh Historical Society was formed in 2004. It operates under the auspices of the Inverleigh Mechanics Institute and Public Hall Committee.

The Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve is home to a number of bird and animal species. In late October, twenty or so locals set off for a bird walk led by the Friends of the Reserve, starting at the entrance at the northern end. The weather was fine, the track was sandy and many birds were heard. The leaders had done a ‘reccy’ – a reconnaissance earlier in the week, so we knew what birds were around and what we might see. About two hours later, at the conclusion of the walk, we had learned a number of things:
• Just because a bird was there yesterday is no guarantee that it will be there today!
• We heard far more birds than we saw…
• But, sometimes the bird’s call led us to see the bird, such as this lovely Sacred Kingfisher.
• So, learning a few bird calls always increases your chances of seeing the birds. Merlin Bird ID https://merlin.allaboutbirds.org and Xeno Canto https://xeno-canto.org/ are great free resources.
• When learning a call, we learned that putting it into words helps to remember it. Wood Ducks for example don’t quack –they say ‘NOW’ as if asking a question.
• We realised that we don’t have to be absolutely quiet when on a bird walk. Birding is an enjoyable social activity and quiet conversations are tolerated by the birds. A Galah pair for example were unperturbed as they preened each other at their nesting tree, with a dozen people watching.
• We learned that bird walks can also be a rich resource for other observations and activities – the younger members on this walk had fun exploring insects, mosses and other plants.
• We also learned that there are no crows in the Inverleigh area! The big black & noisy birds we see and hear regularly are Little Ravens. There are crows in other parts of Australia, but our home grown ones are Ravens.
The Friends group will hold at least one further bird walk this summer. Please see our Facebook page for details or if you would like to be on the mailing list for activities. please contact Keith Windle for details windle.keith@gmail.com 0429 651 298

Lost in the Aisles
He carefully unfolds the last list she wrote, Before the disease took her ability to write, There are items there he knows that he needs, Milk, bread, eggs - the usual things.
The trolley feels strange and half-empty, No extra treats she'd slip in quietly, He misses her comments on the outrageous prices, Her quick darting visits to shelf after shelf.
He can't remember if he needs tea bags, Or which brand of jam she always bought, Staring at shelves of identical jars, Feeling lost in this bright, noisy place.
He stands confused by the checkout machine, Wondering where to find the groceries he chose, Which button? Which screen? Which code?
His hands shake slightly, pressing random keys.
The self-checkout machine keeps beeping, Telling him something's not quite right,
A young worker comes to help him, She speaks too quickly, hands moving too fast.
The carpark has filled since he walked through the door, He stands in the entrance unsure of where he put the car, She always knew exactly where to go,
A young woman pushes past, her impatience clear.
Home again, to an empty house, unpacking awkward bags, Realizing how much she'd always done, How simple things aren't simple anymore, When you're learning everything again.

22 Leigh News POLICE REPORT FOR DECEMBER
Hello all,
I have had some reports recently of children one evening on electric scooters/bikes on the Winchelsea Road playing chicken on the train crossing with an oncoming train which had to repeatedly sound it’s horn to warn the youths to get off the crossing. The youths apparently then went and rode in front of cars in nearby Mercer Street. If you have children who you let roam on electric scooters and bikes in the evenings around the town without supervision then it could have possibly been your children. The problem with this report is that it is not an isolated incident and in recent times I have had and documented numerous reports of youths of electric scooters and bikes getting up to no good on them about town, yet it is still occurring and the behaviour is getting more dangerous. Children under 16 cannot ride electric scooters by law and the electric and petrol kits that are being fitted to bicycles also make them illegal! Take access to these vehicles away from your kids like some parents have done as the
children riding these devices are risking both their own and others safety. I and a lot of residents have had enough, time for the parents to take action!
I have been hearing/seeing numerous reports of dogs getting out of properties in both Inverleigh and Teesdale and some are getting involved in attacking other animals. Please ensure fencing on your property can stop your animals getting out for their and others safety.
It is the middle of November as I am writing this and there has just been some seri-ous injury and fatal collisions in nearby towns. Coming up to Christmas please take care on the roads, don’t speed even while overtaking and don’t go overtaking over double lines especially between Inverleigh and Geelong where I am getting increasing reports of poor/dangerous driving.
Enjoy the Christmas holidays if you are lucky enough to get time off and be especially careful on the roads you are not familiar with when you are heading to holiday destinations as there are a lot of roads in poor condition with pot holes and crum-bling sections.
Keep Safe Chris
St Paul’s Surprise Shop
Our local Op Shop is open for one afternoon and three mornings a week during School Terms. It closes during the holidays as most volunteers have other duties during those periods of the year. This year we were able to donate to Samaritan House and our local CFA branch as well as supporting our church.
We are currently looking for additional volunteers to work approximately one Friday morning a month and possibly other times when our regular volunteers are away. If you have some spare time and would like to volunteer please call in and leave your name and contact information. The work is not arduous and there are opportunities to meet other volunteers and the many travellers who pass through our town. Most visitors say they are regular op shoppers and love our well organised shop. Come in and have a look if you have not been in before? You would be very welcome.

INVERLEIGH CFA NEWS
Fire Danger Period
As of 25th November the Golden Plain Shire and the Surf Coast Shire are now in the fire danger period and this means that fire restrictions are in place.
Fire restrictions are a tool that the CFA uses to limit the potential fire danger to communities within Victoria across the summer months when the risk of fire is much higher.
So what does this mean for the person living or visiting these shire areas?
Basically you cannot burn any bonfires, rubbish heaps, or any fire outside with the exception of a BBQ. A lot more detail is on the CFA web site for specific information about what can and cannot be done. Please take the time to check it out.
One of the biggest things about the fire danger period we see each year is a lack of common sense. What I mean here is to think about what your about to do, and are the conditions suitable to do it. There always seems to be somebody who wants to mow a block on a 40 degree day or in a gale force wind on the 30 degree day. Both very risky and dangerous, do it on a day after rain or early in the morning before conditions get bad. Then we get dirt bike riders in long dry grass, paddock bombs speeding around in dry grass, newer cars with very hot exhaust’s driving
and parking in long grass. Several years ago we had somebody trying to eradicate ants by pouring fuel down a hole and burning them out. There are many instances of fires occurring in the hotter summer months through a lack of thought and awareness of what they are doing and the possible consequences.
So please think about your actions and try to match what you intend to do with the conditions at hand or predicted. It might be a bit inconvenient at times and not what you wanted to do at the time, but it might just advert an accident or a disaster.
Please make yourself familiar with the fire danger ratings (moderate – catastrophic ) and also the fire district that you’re in, remember if your traveling then you might pass into other fire districts and they might have different ratings, particularly with total fire ban days. Inverleigh is in the central district and yet if you went to Cressy, the next town to the west, then it is in the South West district and could have a different rating. So be aware of where you are and what rating might apply.
Lastly keep your eyes open for Santa visiting the town on Sunday 22nd December.
Stay cool and Safe. Ewen Peel. Inverleigh CFA
WW1 Book Launch at Inverleigh a Great Success
The afternoon of Sunday the 27th of October saw the Inverleigh Public Hall buzzing with people who had come for the launch of Robert Wight’s new book, Inverleigh and Murgheboluc District Soldiers in the Great War 1914 – 1918, Individual Stories of Service and Sacrifice. Rob is a member of the Inverleigh Historical Society and the Western Front Association.
The event began with a talk by the author on the range of experiences of servicemen in WW1 using soldiers from the book as examples. The Inverleigh Historical Society and the Inverleigh RSL sub-branch co-hosted the event.
The large crowd included many people with connections to soldiers in the book as well as others with an interest in military and local history. They enjoyed looking at the WW1 memorabilia display and chatting, catching up and meeting new connections over the delicious afternoon tea.
The book includes a history of the AIF involvement in WW1, many images and the individual stories of
143 soldiers in narrative form. Sales were brisk with the book being wonderful value at $45.
We are hoping that more people with connections to the soldiers in the book will contact the Inverleigh Historical Society and share photos, letters and memories. The book is now available for purchase.

Over the past month at Shelford Primary School, we have been engaged in a variety of enriching activities. Our students have had the opportunity to harvest a range of vegetables from our school veggie garden, fostering both hands-on learning and an appreciation for sustainability. In addition to this, we have had several exciting excursions, each designed to enhance our students' educational experiences outside the classroom.
We also recently celebrated our annual Celebration of the Arts day, a highlight of the school year, where students showcased their creativity and artistic talents. We took time to observe Remembrance Day, providing our students with the

Flea Facts
With the warmer weather fleas are on the move.
Flea eggs that have been lying dormant over the winter months are stimulated to hatch. To keep your pet flea free you must commit to a year long program.
If you treat your dogs and cats with a flea preventative each month you will be killing the fleas and breaking the life cycle. Did you know?
* A female flea can lay up to 2,000 eggs
* On average a flea lives 2-3 months
*Just one flea can multiply to 1,000 fleas on your pet and in your home in 21 days
*The male flea can mate for 9 hours straight
To prevent fleas and break the cycle it is important to use a monthly flea prevention such as Simparica or Simparica Trio for Dogs or Revolution or NexGard Spectra for cats.
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year
The staff at Bannockburn Veterinary Clinic would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
We would like to thank our clients for their support during the past year and look forward to caring for your pets in 2025.
The clinic will be closed during the public holidays in December and January. Please see our Christmas and New years opening hours.
If your pet requires veterinary attention during the time we are closed please contact your closest emergency vet.
Kitten Season
Cats start breeding when the days start getting longer. While it usually starts around around August, they can continue to breed throughout spring and summer months.
Cats are breeding machines. A queen cat (the term used for a female cat) can start to breed from as young as 4 months of age and can produce up to two litters every season. This means animal shelters and rescue groups are often overwhelmed with kittens and cats needing homes.
Desexing your cat is an important part of responsible pet ownership and there are many benefits including the following:
• Unwanted pregnancies. Your cat should be desexed before they reach the age at which they can start breeding which is around 4 months of age.
• Less behavioural issues such as spraying. A queen in season can become agitated, meow loudly repeatedly and rub up against everything. Tomcats can also be a handful becoming agitated, spraying urine and desperate to go outside.
• Less likely to roam which reduces the risk of them getting into fights and being exposed to infectious disease such as FIV (Feline AIDS)
• Reduced risks of health problems. Females are less likely to get mammary cancer and will not get uterine infections.
You can contact our clinic on 03 5281 1221 if you would like to book your cat in for their desexing procedure.
Holidays and Pets
Preparation is the key to ensuring a great holiday. As a pet owner, there is a lot to consider when planning a holiday whether you leave your pet at a boarding facility, arrange a pet sitter, or bring them along with you.
You can purchase these products from the clinic. If you would like more infomation please call the clinic on 52811221.
Freddie The Sheep
Freddie came to visit us after he suffered a fractured front leg.
He had a cast applied and was much happier with the support.
Dr Kylie and Nurse Alana had a photo taken with the star patient after his cast was applied.
Whichever option you decide, ensure your pet is up to date with the following: Vaccinations, Heartworm prevention, Intestinal worming, Flea and tick prevention, Microchip details and/or Medications if required.
If using a pet sitter or a boarding facility advise them of the Veterinary Clinic your pet attends and advise your Veterinary Clinic of who is looking after your pet. Ensure both have your current contact numbers.
Check that your pet's microchip details are up to date.
Travelling By Car
If your pet is anxious or dislikes car trips, start with short trips, make it fun and build up to longer trips.
Don't feed your pet for 4-6 hours prior to travel, water is fine. Ensure there is plenty of fresh air. Plan regular short breaks to stretch their legs and have a drink. If your dog starts panting, it's not just a sign they might be hot. Panting is also a sign that they are anxious or may need a toilet stop.
It is important to properly restrain your pet in a car. Your cat should travel in a cat carrier restrained by a seat belt.
Covering it with a towel can make them feel secure. Your dog can be restrained in a crate or with a special harness that attaches to a seat belt.
Never leave your pet alone in a locked car. Temperatures in your car can rapidly rise, leading to dehydration and even death.
Be Prepared - Be aware of any potential concerns at your holiday destination including, cane toads, spiders, ticks or snakes. Ensure your know the contact details of the local vet.
Most important of all have an amazing holiday!!

FOUR TRADITIONS TO START THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON
“Oh my goodness! I can’t believe it is nearly Christmas again!” so I have been hearing. I can imagine for some, in this time of raised cost of living, it is even more alarming. With this in mind, here are four types of traditions to start this season, which give meaning to the season, without adding to the cost-of-living burden.
The Giving Back Tradition
Donating our time by volunteering is a meaningful experience we can share with our partner or family. There are obvious benefits of doing something good for others. Volunteering together strengthens our connections, reinforces shared values, and helps recenter on things that truly matter. Importantly, it is a hands-on way to model generosity for children if we have them. By the way, we need plenty of volunteers in our Inverleigh and Bannockburn Op Shops that serve our communities, so please contact us if you would like to be a volunteer in this way. Volunteering for a Christmas, community activity, or more regular availability is a great way to help us and our family build connected relationships.
The “Just for Us” Tradition
This time of year usually brings more social and work expectations than usual. Work end-of-year Christmas parties, neighbourhood gatherings, school events, family get-togethers, and gathering with various groups of friends, the list goes on. It may feel like our family relationships get neglected. Think about starting a new tradition making sure we are setting aside time for a date or holiday shopping; make a focus on family relationship time. Whatever we choose to do, make sure our connections stay strong during this hectic time.
The “Present over Presents” Tradition
Whether giving presents is important or less so in our families, one thing that can benefit most is traditions that are all about quality time, hanging out, and connecting. Maybe a family night, playing games, and where everyone shares what they are most thankful for during the year. The simple goals is for each of us being fully
present with the others and enjoying each other’s company.
The Tradition with a Twist
Christmas traditions are, for many of us, a big part of what make this season so special. The meld what we valued in the past with the changes of the present. Traditions often evolve because the family has grown, members move away, new relationships have inspired other traditions, not to mention those who are now gluten intolerant or vegans. Perhaps instead of a traditional round-robin gift exchange, adopt a Chris Kringle tradition, or purchase presents from a quality Op Shop. We don’t have to start completely new traditions; just get creative with ways we can adapt them to meet the changing times.
Acknowledging that not all families get on well for Christmas and conversations to change what has been done in the past are difficult. However, traditions are a big part of the festive season, be open to the situation of other family members about what we can manage to do according to meet the circumstances. Perhaps these new traditions may become ones we carry out and adapt in the years to come.
Based on https://www.prepare-enrich.com/blog/4-traditions-to-start-this-holiday-season/ Prepare/Enrich is a low-cost programme we offer to explore relationship strength and growth areas in times of transition: preparing for a wedding, an addition to the family, change in career, approaching retirement, or just to enrich your relationship. Dr Rimas Liubinas
A humble beginning for Bannockburn Surgery when it first opened its doors in 1983 – small rooms located between what was the original supermarket and pharmacy.
Soon outgrowing these rooms, they moved in 1986 to 19 High Street with two consulting rooms, a small treatment room and tiny tearoom for its team members. Its current building (16 High Street) was opened in the year 2000 – a purpose-built practice complete with five consulting rooms and a sixth added in 2010.
The practice has grown from strength to strength and has a wonderfully dedicated team of Doctors, Nurses, Reception team and Practice Manager. They also have access to high-quality Allied Health services including podiatry and newly introduced acupuncture with Dr Rimas Liubinas, with plans for more services to follow.
For Bannockburn Surgery who celebrated their forty-year anniversary a few weeks ago, this was a proud milestone. The surgery welcomed back former team members: doctors, nurses, administration staff, and allied health for an evening of festivities reminiscing on the past forty-years and what the future holds for the practice.
The Directors (and Principal GPs) of Bannockburn Surgery would like to take the opportunity to say thank you to those whom have been part of their practice team, past and present. And also extends a warm thank you to patients for ongoing support in entrusting their health to the team at Bannockburn Surgery and their journey.
The surgery has a proud history and is incredibly excited for the future. Not only the future of Bannockburn Surgery, but also in continuing to support the growing community of Bannockburn and its surrounds. The surgery has grand plans and is eagerly awaiting to commence build
Bannockburn Surgery is a fully accredited medical practice that provides comprehensive GP services and have been practising within the community for 40 years. Bannockburn Surgery is the largest practice within the shire.

of their purpose-built facility to be located next door to their current premises.
It is pleased to announce that another GP Registrar will be joining the team from August, Dr Ernest Cheng, which will extend the provision of service even further. They are also very fortunate that their two current GP Registrars; Dr Bushra Akhund and Dr Abhi Selvakumar will be continuing at the practice for an additional six months.
Bannockburn Surgery doctors will be continuing to bulk-bill patients with healthcare cards and pension cards, as well as those under 16 years old.
Appointments are available daily and the doctors are welcoming new patients.

You’re in Safe Hands With Peter Lindeman
Delivering Exceptional Results for Over 20Years
If you’re thinking of selling a Rural or Lifestyle acreage property on the Bellarine, the Greater Geelong region or beyond then think Peter Lindeman.
Peter spent 20 years managing farms before jumping the fence to sell them; and over the last 23 years he’s helped over 350 vendors achieve extraordinary results, more often than not surpassing their expectations. Why not let Peter show you how he can help you achieve an outstanding result for your property.
A message from Libby Coker MP for Corangamite
As we approach Christmas, I want to take a moment to extend my warmest wishes to everyone in the Inverleigh community and its surrounds.
The holiday season is a time for reflection, gratitude, and coming together as a community.
Although, it’s a particularly bitter-sweet time for me, with the Australian Electoral Commission recently confirming that Inverleigh will no longer be in the electorate of Corangamite after the next Federal Election. Inverleigh will now be located in the electorate of Wannon.
It has been my absolute pleasure to represent your communities in the Federal Parliament, and together, we’ve achieved some great results.
The Inverleigh Active Youth Space has been a massive hit, with families coming from across the region to try out the new bike tracks and the revamped skate park. I will always remember the excitement of the kids at the community celebration as they took to the tracks for the first time – although I do know a few cheeky out-of-towners managed to sneak an early preview prior to the event.
I will be back out at Inverleigh for the Official Opening of the space soon and can’t wait to see the familiar faces who worked so hard behind the scenes to make the facility a reality.
Many of the kids who now enjoy the Youth Space, also attend Inverleigh Primary School. Earlier this year, I joined with many of the students and the school community to open the overhauled basketball and netball court that was part of an election commitment from 2022.
And finally, depending on the timing of next year’s Federal Election, I may still be the Inverleigh’s Federal Representative come Easter which would give me the opportunity to once again join you all for the Good Friday Appeal event. This is one of the most amazing community events across our region, bringing together local businesses, emergency service providers, local schools, and so many others to raise funds for those in need. I’d like to send my best wishes to the organising committee for all the work you do in improving the lives of those who desperately need more support.
So, thank you all for being such a welcoming community, and for granting me with the opportunity to represent you in Canberra. Our government still has work to do, and I encourage you to get in touch with my office if you need assistance with any federal government services.
And I’d like to extend a particular thanks to Peter Trevaskis – the Leigh News is an awesome, community-centric publication, and the work you do plays such an important role in building a stronger community.
So, Merry Christmas everyone, and a Happy New Year!
