INVERLEIGH PROGRESS ASSOCIATION meet in the
Inverleigh Public Hall
on the 3rd Wednesday of each month @7 :30pm (Except January)
VISITORS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME President: Hilary Hamilton Secretary: Luanne Thornton Treasurer: Tony Waayers Leigh News Editor: Peter Trevaskis
The Progress Association has been actively working towards improving the amenity of Inverleigh for over 40 years. Of course all such organisations need volunteers and the Association is no exception. Without them nothing happens. If you have some ideas for the town you would like to achieve, you are welcome to join us and help achieve them. Some of the projects completed by the Progress Association include: The Federation Bridge which was built to commemorate the centenary of Federation in 2001. Walking Tracks were established with lots of support from the community, including fencing and tree planting. Public Toilets Progress Association members worked for many years with Council to have the old toilets removed and a new block built, which did not detract from the entrance to our town. They are used more than any other toilets in the Shire. The Clock a new clock was recently installed on the clock tower in our main street, clearly visable from the General Store across the road. Town Entrance Signs. IPA worked for many years to procure the 2 Entrance Signs (Hamilton Highway East and West) welcoming travellers to our town.
The Inverleigh Historical Society was formed in 2004. It operates under the auspices of the Inverleigh Mechanics Institute and Public Hall Committee. Our Aims are to collect and preserve items of local historic interest and to promote research and interest in local history. We welcome all donations to our collection or the opportunity to copy material. We are most grateful to the many people who have kept the Historical Society in mind as they sorted through their own collections. We undertake many interesting projects and have enjoyable meetings, which you are welcome to attend.

Peter’s Editorial
It has been a very cold winter so far, or is it just that I'm getting older? And the rainfall has been very steady too. I am starting to see canola crops showing a few flowers too. So, the circle of life continues, despite all the challenges we are facing. I have added a photo of the Federation Bridge to the front cover, partly to keep a record of the work that has just been done (it was very recently repainted), but to acknowledge the important link this is for the Inverleigh Community, especially the children going to and from school. I have made the Council aware of some further maintenance required on some of the low level wires too, and will follow up this item next month to make sure it is progressing to the top of the "to do" list. Keep warm every body and stay safe. I was able to have my second vaccine for Covid 19 on Tuesday, with no side effects. Look out for each other, particularly the elderly, and don't be afraid to help when you can.
Lions Club Changeover
The Leigh Valley Lions Club held their change over dinner at the Inverleigh Bowls club on Wednesday 14 July. Joining with club members & their partners were Past District Governor Phillip Johnson with wife Anne & guest speaker Akol Tut. All office bearers continue in their current roles for the next 12 months:• President Stuart Platt • Vice President Kevin McDonald • Secretary Keith Robson • Treasurer Ralph Smith Guest speaker Akol Tut held those present in awe as he told of his past life experiences which were unimaginable to most Australians. Akol came here from South Sudan aged 21 about 13 years ago after spending several years in a refugee camp, surviving on one meal of corn a day. He is currently working as a security guard but his ambition is to become a police officer working as a liaison presence between the police & the South Sudanese youth, some of whom are over represented in crime. Akol explained that in South Sudan, mothers were responsible for the discipline of girls, fathers responsible for the boys & discipline is strict. Australia is a much

G'day from the penners for this month. We hope you are all keeping warm during this cold spell. Unfortunately CoVid has reared it's ugly head again and it seems that NSW is copping it this time. Just as soon as we peep out from under the face mask the virus sees us and attacks. To everyone who has relatives and friends in the state, including me, all we can do is try to support them and stay in touch as best we can. Thankfully with our modern communication systems this is fairly easy. This month we are profiling Peter, one of our original members and a writer who likes to keep us all guessing with his left of centre tangents. Just when you have his style all figured out he will throw a curve ball at group and send us into unknown territory. His unique thought patterns of our homework subjects and also in our class writings he keeps us all amused and always wondering where he will will lead us. Peter has a passion for animal life and he shares his home with numerous chickens, ducks and geese, not to mention his lively little dog Banjo and his ginger cat Milo. He also loves gardening and his vege patch. Peter is also a mad model car maker and has had lots featured on model face book pages. He once told me he had over 700 models. Wow is all I can say. Along with his busy day to day life, feeding animals, model building, gardening and writing, he also is an avid reader. His family home is filled with bookcases that are filled to the brim with books. As a child he would frequent the second hand bookshops in his local area and spend his pocket money on books. This poem by Peter was published in our 2nd book “Gathering Gum Leaves” which was released in 2016.
Do Not Take My Joy
Thanks to: Ross & Caroline Wilson of Shelford and Mora Leach of Inverleigh for faithfully supplying the monthly rainfall figures. Your efforts are very much appreciated.
Do not take my joy. I find it in such simple things: The light on leaves, the rush of wings, The fresh cool feel of morning air, The rooster crow from who knows where. The chatter from the aviary, The cocky calling from the tree. The open space, the history, Life's a gentle mystery. Do not take my joy. Leave me to my peace. Tell me not of wars or hate. Leave those things outside my gate. It is not that I do not care; I cannot cope with everywhere. This world so vast, my self so small I must set limits to it all. Maybe not where yours would be; We're not the same though, you and me. Leave me to my peace.

AUGUST 2021 CALENDAR
though there were probably several more in front any of the “…..three general stores, baker, butcher, two blacksmith shops, and a hotel also a Mechanics' Institute and library. There are two motor garages, four churches, and a railway station…..” (Aileen Phillips aged 12, ‘Advocate’ 11.6. 1931 - Trove)
HITCHING RAIL – HIGH STREET The images in the calendar this month shows a scene of High Street looking west taken in approximately 1910 and another taken over 100 years later. The older image shows an unsealed road along the front of the bluestone building on the left - H. Allen’s Western Stores and a little further along is the curved veranda of McDonald’s the butchers. The later image shows the updated Western Stores that have become a pharmacy and a real estate agents office. Several other “spot the differences” include the installation of the power lines (this was in c1956), the paving of the footpaths, driveways and roads, the growth of the trees and lack of tree guards and the amount of signage, including the CFA sign, now deemed ‘necessary’. The houses and Anglican Church on the right are still visible through the larger trees. The lone wagon being pulled by the team of six horses is certainly different to the constant passing of today’s transport including cars, vans, farm machinery and trucks (a considerable number of them ‘B’ doubles). The third image is of the hitching rail that is in front of the CFA station formerly the site of a councillor’s residence. This is the last surviving one in the town al-
Blacksmiths were in great demand when the main transport was either by riding horses or having a team of horses pulling various types of wagons or buggies. Smithies were able to create objects primarily from wrought iron or steel, but sometimes from other metals b forging the metal, using tools to hammer, bend and cut , producing objects such as horse shoes, gates, grilles, railings, light fixtures, furniture, sculpture, tools, agricultural implements, decorative and religious items, cooking utensils, and weapons. Over the years there have been four different blacksmiths in the town: McNaughton’s, Haygarth’s, Costain’s (at Craigneish) and the last surviving one was Jack Allen’s. Jack Allen operated his forge and workshop from the house on the right (in the older image) with the smoke coming from the chimney. When he was using his hammer on the anvil the clang, clang, clanging could be heard at the school. Later, as cars became the preferred mode of travel, his blacksmithing was to supplemented by going to work at the cement works in Fyansford, with the shoeing of horses done at the weekend. Jack was able to turn his hand also to repairs to other horse equipment and repairs to farm machinery. I have lived at this house for some years and whenever there is some digging required horse shoes have been found from a small Shetland size to the much bigger Clydesdale size, also various other pieces of metalwork, even a buggy frame under some blackberries. POLICE REPORT FOR JULY 2021
Hello all, While I am writing this article we are currently undergoing another COVID lockdown which has just been extended. Obviously we have had several of these over recent times and we all should be aware that they may be an ongoing measure. Please keep aware of current COVID movement restrictions and requirements (masks etc) as we move forward best through the Victorian Government DHS website. There are obviously QR codes displayed at most businesses and venues which are required to be used or otherwise use the manual sign in methods if you do not have an appropriate phone application. Please wear the masks when required. Common Road and speeding vehicles is still an ongoing issue and I will continue to actively patrol the road and the ever increasing traffic that uses the road. There has recently been some publicity in the Geelong advertiser over the traffic volumes, speed zone and deceased wildlife on the road especially in the 100 km/h zone and I understand the council may be reviewing the speed limit. In the mean time please take care on the road and be aware of wildlife that may appear in front of you on this road or on the nearby Inverleigh Teesdale Road running through the Common I had leave during the recent school holidays but since returning I have already detected numerous speeding motorists including four excessive speeders doing 97, 96, 99 & 91 in the 60 km/h zone especially on a recent Friday night. Those four motorists had their licences suspended for between 3 and 6 months. Be aware that the Police vehicle is fitted with a camera which records vehicles speeds from the radar and I also wear a camera which records interactions and is reviewed. The readings on the PBT are also recorded and regularly downloaded. If a motorist is caught doing more than 25 km/h
over the speed limit the fine is currently $500 and the licence is suspended for a 3 month period!! Excess of 35 km/h is $682 and suspension of 6 months, 45 km/h plus is $909 and suspension of 12 months. Breath alcohol .05 and above is a cancellation of licence for 3 months. Between .07 and .10 is 6 months cancellation. Over .10 is basically an extra month for every .01. I have also been asked a few times recently, ‘Is there a licence that allows people to drive just for work, to pick up kids etc’. There is no such thing, if your licence is suspended/cancelled you cannot drive during the suspension/cancellation period otherwise it is court. I have noted and had reports on the Hamilton Hwy Inverleigh of a 100 km/h sign at the rail crossing facing the wrong way giving motorists heading West the impression the crossing might be 100 km/h zone after just having gone past the two sets of 80 signs. I have notified Vic Roads. Please continue to obey the 80 zone as it has not changed. I have also had requests from people suggesting the give way sign in Winchelsea Road (Dundas Street) at the Hamilton Hwy needs to be a stop sign after recent collisions at the intersection. I have passed on the concerns to the Golden Plains council who will liase with Vic Roads. I have reports of unregistered cars and motorcycles driving around the Teesdale Turtle bend area and recently issued several fines to a youth thanks to video from a Teesdale resident. If you have footage of offending motorists often I can prosecute so please let me know it could prevent a future collision. Please continue to look out for each other during the lockdowns and keep communication up to those who might be feeling very isolated. Keep safe, Chris

Dental Disease
Just as we look after our teeth to prevent plaque and dental disease, we also have to care for our pet's teeth. Just like us, dental disease in our pets occurs when plaque builds up on their teeth each day and isn't cleaned. Bacteria and saliva stick to our pet's teeth and form a layer of plaque which is responsible for that furry feeling that we get when we don't brush our teeth. Over time, plaque hardens into tartar and together will grow into and under your pet's gums, causing gingivitis, halitosis (bad breath), leading to pain and tooth loss ,which left untreated, can contribute to certain kidney, liver and heart problems. More than 85% of dogs and cats over four years of age have some form of peridontal disease. Some of the signs to look out for are listed below.
* Bad breath * Excessive drooling * Pawing at mouth * Reluctance to chew hard food * Pain when handled around head * Facial swelling
Clyde's Close Call
Clyde is a spectacular species of bird known as a Quaker Parrot. As pretty as his plumage is, he has a character and personality to match his looks. The breed of bird is known for their charming, comical personalities and their willingness to learn human speech. They also adapt well to becoming a part of their human flock. So Clyde's Mum was very distraught when she came home one day to find Clyde could not bear any weight on his left leg and he was not being his ususal chatty self. Clyde was brought down to see Dr. Kylie and it was evident from the angle his leg was pointing that Clyde had a broken leg. A broken leg in a bird can be an emergency not only from blood loss from the broken bone but also the shock associated with pain. Radiographs were taken of Clyde's leg to assess the degree of damage/type of fracture and to then determine if there were treatment options for Clyde. Weighing in at only 960grams, handling Clyde had to be gentle and to ensure safe handling, Clyde was gaseously anaesthetised for any x-rays and procedures we did. The evolution of birds and their bones shows many unique adaptions, mostly aiding in the ability to fly. Brids have a light skeletal system where bones are hollow (pneumatized) with criss-crossing struts or trusses to provide the structural strength, rather than dense bone with marrow like in us and other mammals. Because of these hollow bones, a brids skeleton account for only about 5% of its total body wieght! The leg bones of birds are the heaviest, contributing to a low centre of gravity, which aids in flight.
Clyde's Radiographs The radiograph taken of Clyde's leg revealed a fracture to his tibiotarsus- birds have a fused tibia and fibula compared to mammalian species. This bone is also the most common area to break in trauma related incidents. The break was a full thickness, moderately displaced (the bones were apart) fracture that also involved some rotation of the bones -hence it pointing the wrong way. Using match sticks on either side of
Leigh News 29 If you think your pet is showing the signs of peridontal disease it is important that treatment is started before any irreversible changes occur. Treating peridontal disease involves thorough scaling and flushing to remove tartar, plaque and infection. Any loose or badly infected teeth are removed. The teeth are then polished to help reduce future plaque build up. Antibiotics and pain relief are administered at the time of the dental procedure and dispensed at discharge. DENTAL MONTH! During August we are offering 20% discount on all dental check ups and procedures. Contact the clinic on 52811 221 to book an appointment to have a dental check.
Dental Products
There are lots of things you can do and products available to maintain your pets healthy teeth and gums. Listed below are a few of the products we recommend. Hills Prescription Diet T/d is clinically proven, uniquely formulted dental diet for adult dogs to effectively reduce plaque and tartar development. Greenies Dental Treats are a nutritionally balanced treat with demostated efficancy in controlling plaque and tartar build up. Oravet Dental Chews are dual action. The chewing action removes plaque and then forms a protective barrier over the tooth to help prevent reattachment of plaque.
the leg, a stabilising bandage was placed on Clyde's leg for 1 week to allow swelling and bruising to settle. Clyde was comfortable and happy with his leg stabilised and was even able to ambulate around with his peg leg! After a week a new, lighter and more manoeuvrable splint was applied to Clyde's leg. The original splint had helped to immobilise the leg but now we needed to release Clyde's foot so that his toes were able to move. Not only did this mean his toes were not locked in an unnatural position, but it also encouraged him to use his foot which would then promote bone healing over the fracture site. This new bandage used the match sticks again and some strong tape-casting this leg was certainly a different experience to when a dog or cats leg is cast as we use fibreglass to splint or cast mammals legs. Within the week, Clyde was walking well on the foot, even attempting to 'step up' onto Mums finger as best he could with the movement the match sticks would allow. Over some subsequent revisits to ensure progress, Clyde went on to show us how he could use his leg completely normally to eat his food-grasping it in his foot. He would also happily 'step up' onto Mums finger leading with the previously broken leg! Clyde was so happy he was also back to chatting away. His Mum and Dad put together a lovely video of his progress from the initial cast through to the splint and the video culminated in Clyde saying thank you for Dr. Kylie! We will post this video to our facebook page so you can see all the progress he went through.
