MESSAGE FROM THE PORT MANAGER
Dear Colleagues,
As we reflect on the year-to-date performance of the Port of Durban, I want to take a moment to acknowledge both our challenges and our achievements. While our revenue is currently below target, particularly in the Cargo dues, Marine, and Real Estate sectors, we are making significant strides in various areas.
consistent volume levels. However, we must address the double-digit decline in the Automotive sector and work collaboratively to turn this around.
The container sector has shown resilience, achieving positive results for three consecutive months. However, we must remain vigilant as adverse weather conditions and equipment breakdowns have impacted our productivity. I want to assure you that recovery plans are in motion, and your continued dedication is vital during this period.
I am pleased to report that the Dry Bulk sector has demonstrated remarkable improvement, especially in rice imports and manganese ore exports, which have exceeded our budget expectations. The Liquid Bulk sector also outperformed its targets this month, driven by increased refined petroleum imports in anticipation of rising demand.
Despite the setbacks we face, the Break Bulk sector remains strong, maintaining
I want to highlight our ongoing projects that are crucial for enhancing our operations. The KZN Floods project, firefighting infrastructure upgrades, and the acquisition of new equipment are just a few initiatives aimed at improving our performance and safety standards.
Our decongestion meetings and equipment refurbishment efforts are key to boosting our operational efficiency. I encourage each of you to remain engaged and proactive in these initiatives. Your hard work and commitment are essential as we navigate these challenges together.
Lastly, I want to remind everyone about the importance of safety and compliance as we undertake various upgrades and projects. We are committed to fostering a safe working environment, and your cooperation is crucial in achieving this goal.
Thank you for your continued dedication and resilience. Together, we can overcome our challenges and drive the Port of Durban towards a successful future.

TUG CHRISTENING CEREMONY THE GROUNDBREAKER
TNPA recently held a christening ceremony at the Port of Durban to officially launch and name the latest investment of five tugboats into the port’s marine fleet. This investment is part of TNPA’s Marine Fleet Renewal Programme, which focuses on acquiring marine assets to strengthen shipping operations at the ports.
The investment in the marine fleet is a key part of Transnet’s efforts to revitalize South Africa’s ports, support economic growth, and improve shipping efficiencies at the Port of Durban. In total, seven tugs have been acquired, with two of them recently launched in the Port of East London. These tugs were unveiled at a launch, naming, and christening ceremony in the Port of East London in September 2024.
As the busiest port in sub-Saharan Africa, the additional fleet will enable the Port of Durban’s readiness to respond with on-demand craft in the safe navigation of vessels within the port.
With a bollard pull of 60 tonnes, the tugs delivered by Damen Shipyards Cape Town feature the latest hull
design and propulsion system consisting of diesel engines fitted with Azimuth Stern Drive. These comply with the International Maritime Organisation’s Tier III environmental standards. This makes the tugs fully capable of handling larger vessels that call at South Africa’s premier container port.
This brings TNPA’s tugboat complement to a total of 38 across its eight commercial seaports, 14 of these based at the Port of Durban. These assets are used to provide port services such as pilotage, towage, firefighting, marine search, and rescue, as well as to combat waterside pollution.
The procurement of this fleet demonstrates Transnet’s commitment to fully realising the recovery plan. TNPA is now approaching 12 months of the 18-month cycle and can see improvement in the agility of executing strategic projects, which will enhance the organisation’s competitiveness.
Meeting the objectives of the marine fleet renewal programme, coupled with a skilled workforce, will catapult our responsiveness to meeting global shipping demands.

This year the Port of Durban showered two beneficiaries with the giving spirit of the late icon Nelson Mandela. Our volunteers assisted the NPO by planting a variety of seedlings and made sure that the facility was kept clean by offering housekeeping services. Primrose Primary School which is based in Isipingo where the development of housing projects surrounding the school has led to an influx of Grade R learners.
