Port Manager’s Desk
As we near the end of the year, it is essential to reflect on our achievements and reaffirm our commitment to the recovery plan. This year has seen significant progress in our capital expenditure initiatives and maintenance efforts, all made possible by the diligent work of the Port of Cape Town employees. We have received an additional four hydraulic shore tension units, increasing our total to ten units, and have successfully completed the infrastructure upgrade of the Sturrock Dry Dock, enhancing our capacity to accommodate larger vessels.

Among our notable milestones, we proudly added two new launch boats to our fleet, facilitated the simultaneous docking of two Cunard Queens, and achieved the concurrent docking of the two largest cruise vessels and container vessels. Furthermore, we had the honour of hosting strategic delegations, including the Premier of Northern Cape and representatives from the Kenyan Ports Authority, strengthening our international relationships.
While we have worked diligently, we also took time to engage in various initiatives focused on employee well-being, such as Wellness Day, Heritage Day, Sports Day, and Men’s Network Events, all of which foster a positive workplace culture.
Thank you for your continued support and commitment. Looking ahead to 2025, we remain focused on enabling volume recovery, enhancing operational efficiencies and solidifying the port’s position as a hub for economic growth. We remain optimistic about the opportunities that lie ahead, building on our successes and driving excellence for our port and stakeholders.

Introducing Advanced Shore Tension Units at the Port of Cape Town
The Port of Cape Town has recently added four advanced hydraulic shore tension units, increasing the total to ten. This upgrade significantly enhances the port's capacity to counteract the effects of long-wave conditions on docked vessels. These specialized mooring systems, strategically placed along the quayside, are essential for minimizing the impact of prolonged ocean swells, which can pose considerable challenges for cargo handling and overall port operations.
The introduction of these advanced hydraulic tension mooring units represents a substantial investment by TNPA to support the resilience and safety of port operations. These innovative systems utilize sophisticated hydraulic technology to actively adjust the tension of mooring lines, counteracting the dynamic forces exerted by long waves. By effectively dampening the vessel movements caused by these long-wave effects, the port can now ensure the secure berthing of ships, minimizing the risk of damage and ensuring the continued efficient flow of cargo and shipping activities.
Commenting on the delivery as one of the shipping lines that are benefiting from the installed shore tensions, National Operations Manager at CMA CGM South Africa, Leon Reddy, said: “The introduction of the shore tension units at the Port of Cape Town has significantly improved our vessel operations. With the ability to keep our vessels stable and
secure alongside the berth, we have seen a notable reduction in vessel movement and ranging.
This has resulted in increased container productivity and reduced port stay times, leading to improved overall efficiency and reduced costs. We support TNPA's initiative to invest in additional shore tension units and look forward to continued cooperation to enhance port operations." The phased delivery of the rest of the units will be completed by early 2025.

Maintenance
The Port of Cape Town recently underwent a maintenance project worth R80, 300.00, aimed at resurfacing and patching potholes, cracks, and worn areas at South Arm Road. The main objective of this project was to restore smooth and safe driving conditions for road users, while also minimizing disruptions during the maintenance period.
To ensure the safety of both employees and road users, temporary traffic control measures were put in place throughout the maintenance period. These measures were implemented to reduce the risk of accidents and maintain a smooth flow of traffic in the area.
All work carried out during the maintenance project adhered to the required standards for
road maintenance, including material specifications and safety regulations. This helped to ensure that the improvements made to the South Arm Road Entrance were of high quality and would provide long-lasting benefits for those using the road.
The overall aim of the maintenance project was to enhance road quality, minimize vehicle wear and tear, and reduce delays caused by deteriorating road conditions.
By prioritizing improved road surface and overall infrastructure resilience, the project sought to support the operational efficiency of the Port of Cape Town and contribute to a smoother flow of transport services in line with TNPA infrastructure goals.

Port of Cape Town docks the longest vessels

The Port of Cape Town recently celebrated a new milestone, with the docking of the longest cruise and container vessels, the Anthem of the Seas and the MSC Ines both with an overall length of 348 meters. The Anthem of the Seas, the world’s fi h-largest cruise ship, made a stop at the port of Cape Town for refuelling and provisions due to the port’s strategic location at the southern tip of Africa, offering essential services for vessels avoiding the Red Sea. The docking of this luxury cruise ship aligns well with the Port of Cape Town's recent win as Africa's Leading Cruise Port at the 2024 World Travel Awards
This milestone was further acknowledged by our customer, commenting on the docking of the container vessel, MSC Ines, Captain
Miljenko Mijan, MSC Cape Town Operations Manager said, “MSC is extremely excited, humbled and pleased with the cooperation given. The Port of Cape Town’s Harbour Master, marine pilots and all staff involved have gone the extra mile to accommodate the vessel. Working together like this we can achieve great things in the future.”
Vessels are evolving, with increased capacities and larger overall dimensions, owing to the surge in global demand and economies of scale, therefore through such teamwork and the port’s agility, we can continue to make strides toward the successful implementation of the Transnet Recovery Plan. This milestone highlights the port’s growing capacity and operational excellence.

Making Waves of Change: Fishing Day Success Fuels Support for Local School
Children and Food Donations to Shelter
The Port of Cape Town's open fishing days have become a highlight for the local fishing community, and the recent event was no different, evident in the strong turnout and enthusiastic support. This event not only gave fishing enthusiasts an enjoyable day but also captured the spirit of Transnet's “Shoes on Feet” initiative.
During the open fishing day, participants were invited to contribute new school shoes as part of a charitable drive. These generous donations were collected and will be donated to a local primary school, directly benefiting children in need and making a tangible difference in their lives.
