“Dr. Thomas, congratulations on the success of your film. Can you tell us about the moment or idea that sparked the creation of ‘Do It for Grandma’?” Thank you! I was preparing for the 48-Hour Film Project in Miami, Florida, which is this event where you are given a genre, line of dialogue, type of character, and a prop, and your team has 48 hours to create a film from start to finish. I had written some short films before and let my family review them. They were good concepts, but the way I wrote them was not “it.” I was trying to cram too much into a small film as if it were a feature. I could tell that I needed more practice and to learn how to tell stories in a short time. I started by going online and studying microfilms – not just short films, but one- to three-minute films, because they had to have much tighter storytelling. Somehow, I just kept coming across these films dealing with greed and money and robberies. I’ve been called a goody two shoes all my life, so I wondered how I could take these concepts and have a close family member throw a goody two shoes in a situation where she must do something illegal for “a good cause.” I went to Starbucks for three hours and typed the first draft,

let my sister read it and she loved it. That gave me the confidence to really move forward. So, basically it was just a fun exercise that made me think Hmm, I’m on to something here. Let me explore this idea more.

Casting and Team Chemistry: Moving on to the people who brought the film to life, it's clear that the synergy between your cast and crew was pivotal. "Comedy thrives on the chemistry between actors and the guidance of a director. Could you describe the casting process and how you fostered a collaborative atmosphere on set?" I met Stephon [Duncan], who plays the role of “Ashley,” in March 2022 at the Miami Film Festival. We were introduced through Emmy-award winning producer Cathleen Dean, and we hit it off immediately. I could tell we have similar personalities, and we just became really good friends. I was living in Miami, while she was living in Fort Lauderdale, and a lot of the arts-related activities I wanted to participate in took place in Fort Lauderdale, so she would invite me to different events. One day my sister and I went to an open mic night for the Art Prevails Project and Chasity Hart, who plays “Kimberly,” was performing a few songs from her EP. Afterwards we exchanged information, and she was so sweet. My sister and I hit it off with her very early and I realized that she and Stephon were friends, so I asked them to be a part of a project I was working on. It was a volunteer film project, and I already knew that they were highly skilled in acting just from following them on social media. I also met Natasha Henderson, who plays Ashley’s mom. They were all dedicated and professional. A lot of challenges arose during that first filming experience, but they saw my directing abilities and affirmed that they believed in me, would want to work with me again, and had more film connections they would like to bring to me. That encouraged me and made me feel like they trusted my ability. For casting the businessman and the college student in the film, Lisa Waring, who is the production manager for “Do It for Grandma,” has her own production company, so she pulled from a list of actors. I described the look and feel of the characters and the budget, and she presented it to them. I saw the actors’ headshots and when I spoke with Anthony [Jefferson] (“Businessman”) and Aurora [Gessing] (“College Student”), they were nice and really went above and beyond to make sure that their outfits were right. They were originally supposed to be extras, but I knew there was a chance that they might have speaking roles, so I just brought them on as actors. Sure enough, when working with the cinematographer, we realized that we would need them to have more interaction and I was happy for them to have the opportunity. To establish a collaborative atmosphere on set, I believe it stemmed from embracing humility, gratitude, and trust. I was thankful for the talented cast and crew who believed in the project’s vision. They came in enthusiastic and appreciative of the filming opportunity. I also recognized my specific skill set limitations. While I had successful prior directing and producing experience, I admitted that I didn’t know everything. I aimed to create an environment where everyone felt comfortable freely sharing feedback if they noticed anything. Towards the end of the shoot, the team mentioned that had I not approached it with that mindset, they wouldn’t have spoken up. I’m grateful I did have that mindset because their input was crucial. Given all the moving parts of the production, I acknowledged their expertise in their respective fields (like acting, cinematography, etc.) and expressed how I needed them to feel confident in addressing anything they observed. I could articulate what I envisioned, but they were the ones bringing it to life, hence the importance of trust in their instincts. Encouraging questions without offense fostered a collaborative environment. Ultimately, I’m glad I brought people on my team who already had a collaborative mindset.

DO IT FOR GRANDMA RECOGNITION AND ACHIEVEMENTS

Your film has clearly resonated with audiences and critics alike, evidenced by the numerous selections and the nomination for best comedy film. “What does this recognition mean to you and your team, and to what do you attribute the film’s reception and achievements?” I was just talking to Stephon about this the other day. I believe in making films that I like and would want to see on screen, and it’s important that the people on my team feel that way about our project. At the same time, art is a shared experience. So, with more and more recognition and for it to finally be out into the world where other people enjoy it too, it feels like we’re building a community around the “Do It for Grandma” story. Many people see the laurels but don’t realize that after Sync Cinema Fest (our first official selection) notified us, we got about 8 “Thank you for submitting but we chose other film” emails before our next set of selections. While we were so grateful to be selected, it still was a lot to keep getting those “rejection” emails. But next thing we knew, we were getting back-to-back official selections and an award and it felt so good to know our hard work paid off! The average film gets around 10% acceptance rate and we’ve passed 35%! That’s huge. As a black woman, being recognized by my community holds significant meaning to me. Some of the music and dialogue even makes a reference to the Black Church. And with a female-led cast, it was crucial to me that my actors received recognition for their contributions. This is why the Black Women in Comedy Festival, Black Film Festival Atlanta, Urban Film Festival, and Urban Mediamakers Film Festival held such importance. The acknowledgment from these festivals, particularly for a dramedy, carried substantial weight, considering the unique standards of humor within the Black community. I was like “oh wow, y’all really think it’s funny.” That’s the same feeling when selected by the Georgia Comedy Film Festival; I felt like they understood the nuances to our humor. The significance of our music choice made Sync Cinema Fest being our initial selection a truly humbling experience. Attending the screening and witnessing the array of beautiful films we were grouped alongside was particularly rewarding. With every official selection and award, I felt like the story, my team, and I were seen. You see our use of music. You see the humor. Thank you Tampa Bay Underground Film Festival: You see how we took a small cast and crew and limited resources and made a successful “underground” film. I think the film is being received well because when people hear the title and logline it makes sense, but they also don’t know what to expect. I also think the dramedy aspect of it allows people to go in with a more open mind – compared to if it was outright comedy – and let the story unfold naturally. In addition, I think it’s a very well-rounded film with developed characters, a solid story, creative editing, tailored music, and a relatable topic: family.

The film festival circuit refers to a series of events or festivals where films are screened, showcased, and often judged or awarded based on their artistic, technical, or storytelling merits. These festivals can range from local or regional gatherings to major international events and serve as platforms for filmmakers to exhibit their work to a diverse audience, including industry professionals, critics, and the public. Each festival may have its own focus, niche, or criteria for film selection, catering to different genres, themes, or formats. Filmmakers often aim to get their movies screened at these festivals to gain exposure, receive critical feedback, attract distributors, secure deals for distribution or funding, and potentially win awards that can boost their film's reputation and visibility in the industry. The festival circuit is not only a place to exhibit films but also a networking opportunity for filmmakers, producers, actors, and industry professionals to connect, collaborate, and promote their work. We appreciate every festival that took the time to review our film and are truly grateful for those who selected our dramedy for the world to see. To date, “Do It for Grandma” has been an Official Selection for SEVEN Festivals and has won one award ("Best Comedy Film") at the Georgia Comedy Film Festival. The order of the festivals is based on when ‘Do It For Grandma’ was screened.”

We showcase dramas, comedies, action, adventure, crime, musicals, horror, sci-fi, thrillers, fantasies, mysteries, romances, animation, children’s, religious, lgbt, foreign, documentaries, experimental – basically anything, and it doesn’t have to bizarre or on the fringe, though we definitely delight in those. Do It For Grandma Ashley C. Thomas

MEMORABLE MOMENTS FROM PRODUCTION “Every film production has its unforgettable moments that define the experience.”

G R A N D M A

"Is there a particular anecdote from filming 'Do It for Grandma' that you feel really captures the essence of your team's work ethic and camaraderie?" Writing, directing, and producing your own film on a tight and low budget is a lot. I think when you get on set with time constraints and inevitable challenges, that’s when you really see what your team is made of. It was the initiative that really warmed my heart. Everybody had at least one person that they already knew, so we stayed cracking jokes and singing on set. I could see that everyone picked up on what we could have done better on Day 1 and tried to figure out ways to contribute even more the next two days. For example, on Day 2, our production manager Lisa brought extra hands-on deck, which ended up being perfect because we needed help placing a huge banner for set design. Although Day 1, our driving scene, was the hardest for me logistically, Day 3 was hardest for me mentally and emotionally because directing takes a lot of stamina. I felt like I was struggling to express myself as effectively as I wanted to. Chasity reassured me, “I can tell you’re being really hard on yourself but you’re doing a great job.” I teared up and her words gave me the extra push. I can remember Stephon checking on me throughout, and Lisa making sure everyone was staying hydrated. It felt like we all were looking out for each other and going out of our way to make sure “Do It for Grandma” was the best it could be. When we wrapped on Day 3, McKinson made a video for everybody giving them a special shout out. I learned a lot from him about ways to make my team feel more welcome on set. One story I can’t leave out involves our prop gun. I had purchased one on Amazon that was red and black, and it didn’t look 100% real, so I can only imagine what it would appear like on screen or in the movie poster. I showed Chasity casually on Day 1 and told her that it was the one we’d use the next day and she just made note of it. The next day, McKinson casually comes up to me with this metal prop pistol and says, “I just had this extra prop gun in case you wanted to use it.” It looked so real I said “Put that thing away!” He even brought four beautiful paintings he’s created, which are featured in the film. I was so humbled by our teamwork because everyone’s approach and delivery were respectful, and my team took the initiative to bring solutions rather than judge or complain. Something as simple as them taking initiative made significant improvements to the film and I’m forever grateful.

Overcoming Challenges: No film comes to life without overcoming a few obstacles along the way. "During the production of 'Do It for Grandma,' what were some significant challenges you encountered, and how did you and your team address them?" Money! Absolutely. Before we cast and selected crew that was challenge Number One. I went in thinking the film would only cost about $2500-$3000 max. But when Lisa looked over the script and let me know it would be at least $10,000, I didn’t want to believe it at first, so I went through and did the math myself. None of us had $10,000 sitting around to do a film, so we had to immediately crowdfund. I honestly was discouraged from pursuing the film once I heard that number, but my mom encouraged me, reminding me that so many people want to support me and my work, and she was right! Producing is definitely Number Two in terms of challenges. What made it most challenging was because a lot of my time went to producing and I didn’t feel like I had the creative space mentally to direct like I wanted. I’ll never forget stressing about craft services (food for on set) a day or two before we started shooting. I was looking at every restaurant’s catering options, worrying about how I would stay within budget all during a shooting day that was outdoors. Then, I prayed and realized that I have co-executive producers for a reason and it’s okay to ask for help. My mom immediately talked me through the most cost-effective way to take everybody’s individual order so that people got exactly what they wanted and would feel good on set instead of my buying a bunch of meals no one wanted. The driving scene comes in at Number Three

I T

F O R

G R A N D M A

because it was completely outdoors. Our Director of Photography, or DP (who oversees capturing the images), had to leave to coach a football game right when we were scheduled to finish, so there was no room for delay. It was our first shooting day and earliest shoot an hour away from where my sister and I lived. It was supposed to rain but praise God the rain kept getting pushed back. Only two of us (sound mixer and me) could sit in the back of the vehicle, so that added pressure. This is not to mention that this scene required a lot of action – removing of clothes, over-the-shoulder shots that had to match up while driving. For example, Chasity couldn’t do something from one angle that wasn’t happening when we switch focus to Stephon. And this is on top of Stephon having apprehension about driving. We addressed this challenge by first shooting the most important parts first and saving the closeups or shots that we could get away with at another location last. We rehearsed and ran through the order of this scene in the script a lot beforehand as well, leading to me minimizing the number of props and movements. My sister oversaw logistics for food and other aspects as needed, and Lisa helped keep us on schedule. This was the hardest location to shoot by far.

Screenplay and Comedy Tuning: The foundation of any great comedy is its script. “How did you fine-tune the comedy in the script, ensuring every joke landed just right?" Virtually, all the original jokes I wrote remained from the first draft, so I think the effectiveness of the comedic moments written derived from the acting, directing, and editing. I did remove two lines from the screen-

play because they hinted at setting up one of the main jokes too early.

after their conflicts, enriching the film's overall depth.

Originally written as a fast-paced comedy, the film organically transformed during production, taking on a more profound essence where the jokes didn't overshadow the central message of “family first.” The slower pace we embraced allowed the humor to land in a way that lingered in the audience's mind even after the film concluded. The editing process played a crucial role in achieving this slowed pacing.

I once heard that comedy, even in stand-up, is about leading the audience one way (the setup) and then surprising them (the punchline). That's precisely what we aimed for in this film. I want the audience to anticipate one ending but be pleasantly surprised by something they can discuss afterward.

Given that this is a dramedy, a lot of the humor was in the subtleties or clever remarks rather than overt comedy. Our table read was instrumental in refining this approach. Stephon and Chasity were able to ask questions based on how they studied their characters: “Would this action suit Kimberly more than Ashley?” or "Would Kimberly deliver this seriously, or should Ashley exaggerate it?" So while the lines and action stayed the same, who performed them changed. On set, I supported the actors in modifying their lines based on what felt natural if it captured the essence of the screenplay and didn’t go too far off script. For one scene, Stephon provided suggestions for Ashley to interject rather than wait until her mom was done speaking, creating a more authentic conversational style. Most of what was in the screenplay stayed but the slight changes they made fit well. Chasity's suggestion to delve deeper into Kimberly's background was pivotal. It transformed her character from just being the "funny" one to someone more relatable, adding depth and enhancing the conflict dynamics. The contrast in personalities and the serious nature of the subject matter allowed the humor to shine through, both during and

Directorial Style and Storytelling Approach: Every director brings a unique vision and style to their projects. "How would you describe your directorial approach, especially in a comedy, and how has directing 'Do It for Grandma' influenced your storytelling techniques?" My directorial approach revolves around fostering a collaborative environment while leading the production towards my overall vision. I prioritize effective communication to ensure everyone understands the vision and contributes their ideas to serve the bigger picture. I understand that everybody is experienced in their respective areas, and I want to respect, embrace, and appreciate that. I love creating storyboards and discussing shots. Rather than trying to draw stick figures and hope the DP understands, I find images online that best convey the shot I desire. Collaborating with our DP McKinson, we aimed for angles that would engage viewers by making them feel a part of the scene and character interactions. I was really invested in the set design and cinematography of the film, and I think we did a great job with blocking, which basically deals with the way subjects are placed and moved within the frame. Looking back, I recognize even greater po-

D O

tential for me as a director to communicate with the actors through emotional language and mental direction, which is something I learned more about on set. So, instead of directing someone to appear sad or look shocked, which may not necessarily even be what I was going for, I would say, hey this character just realized this particular thing and this is the backstory that’s affecting their emotional state right now. That translated much better. I’m open to my team experimenting in ways that align with the narrative. I also want to use storytelling to provide direction to my actors. For example, I shared personal stories of my grandmothers and I remember Stephon telling me that explaining how certain props related to my real life helped her relate to the character more. My goals for the future are to continue studying directing, affirming my team, and exploring directing across diverse genres. Directing “Do It for Grandma” has undoubtedly pushed me beyond my comfort zone, motivating me to continue expanding my skills and approaches in storytelling.

Conveying a Story Concisely: The short film format demands brevity and impact in storytelling. "What strategies did you employ in 'Do It for Grandma' to create a compelling narrative and engaging characters within the short format?" While I appreciate intricate plot twists in films, I recognized the need to simplify and intensify the storyline for a short film. My goal was to convey a universal theme of "family first," acknowledging the enduring impact of grandparents on our lives, whether they are physically present or not, to weave a compelling narrative. It was crucial to develop relatable and profound characters. Rather than taking the easy way out and just adding a line that says, “You know I’m a ride-or-die”

I T

F O R

G R A N D M A

or “I’m the goody two-shoes in the family,” I emphasized visual cues to convey their statuses. This included things such as their attire, their contrasting interactions, and Ashley's academic achievements displayed on her wall. To ensure authenticity, I cast actresses who shared believable chemistry despite portraying characters at opposite ends of the spectrum. During the screenwriting process, I recall applying what I had read about writing a good argument scene: both characters should make valid points that the audience can relate to. I dislike film endings that leave me hanging, so I wanted to make sure that even if viewers finished the film wanting more (which is great because that means they’re invested) it would stem from their immersion in the narrative we created, not due to gaps in understanding.

Raising Funds for the Project: The journey from concept to screen often involves a crucial step: funding. "Could you discuss the process of raising funds for 'Do It for Grandma' and offer any insights into how you managed to secure the necessary budget?" We conducted research to determine the most suitable crowdfunding platform and settled on Kickstarter and GoFundMe. Kickstarter stood out due to its reward system and strict accountability: the all-or-nothing approach meant meeting the goal was imperative for funding, and if achieved, completing the project was mandatory. Our rewards included various levels such as email updates, exclusive early access to our extended trailer, and acknowledgment in the credits. While Kickstarter offered a structured approach, we found that some donors pre-

ferred direct contributions outside the platform, which proved more efficient without additional fees. To manage the campaign effectively, I appointed my sister, leveraging her marketing background and social media prowess as our campaign manager. We compiled a list of acquaintances and used Instagram and TikTok primarily, though in hindsight, focusing on Facebook too would have been beneficial. Fortunately, we reached our funding goal before the set deadline. Attempts to replicate our success using GoFundMe were less fruitful. Instead, we shifted our strategy to personally approaching potential contributors, focusing on securing larger donations to cover upfront costs, aiming for increments of $1,000.

Parting Thoughts and Future Projects: Lastly, we look beyond the film itself to the impact and the future. "Beyond the accolades, what do you hope audiences take away from 'Do It for Grandma,' and what can your fans look forward to in terms of upcoming projects?"

I hope people take away a good conversation starter regarding what it really means to be there for family and the effects of choices that we deem right or wrong. I want to make films where people leave quoting parts of the movie and hope people reflect on the moments of laughter that our film brought them. I hope there is a filmmaker out there watching who is inspired to tell their own unique story not bound by any genre. We plan on securing distribution for “Do It for Grandma” by the spring, so please be on the lookout so you can watch it at a screening near you or on a streaming platform. I have some short screenplays (i.e., bioethics suspense, romance) I’ve written that I’d like to go ahead and film to get out there, and some friends’ comedic shorts that I’d like to help produce. Next, my main priority is to work on getting my romantic comedy feature produced. My father and I came up with the story and I wrote the screenplay. I’m excited to see how my journey in film will continue to unfold.

I enjoy films that address moral dilemmas, so

The Music behind “Do It For Grandma”

The Role of Sound Design and Music: A film’s soundtrack can greatly enhance its comedic elements. “How did you approach the sound design and music selection to complement the comedic tone of ‘Do It for Grandma’?” Music is so important to me. It’s one of the reasons why I greatly admire Jordan Peele because I respect his use of sound and music in films. There were three key aspects of music use in “Do It for Grandma”: the opening scene, an original score, and the closing credits. Initially, I focused on selecting the right music for the opening scene, aiming for a clip lasting over a minute from a local artist. However, after the first round of edits, my mom pointed out that the chosen song was too slow and didn’t align with the intended pacing. I took a break, hoping inspiration would come to me. Shifting focus to the closing credits, I always envisioned creat-

5 4

ing a song for the film with a City Girls vibe. I met up at Starbucks with rapper Lucci Baby, who is also a filmmaker I’ve known since my first music video, and we instantly connected over the project. She introduced me to different producers on YouTube, and while listening to beats, I came across one by Kurvo on the Beat. The hook “Do it for grandma. Do it, do it for grandma” felt like the perfect fit. The lyrics tell the film’s storyline and the upbeat tone contrasts with the serious nature of the film for comedic effect. The creative process flowed smoothly; I recorded a demo on my phone and collaborated with Lucci Baby on her verses. We rehearsed, booked a studio session at TBG Studio, and completed the record-

ing in just an hour! I was so nervous and excited but glad she and the engineer had the experience to help me warm up to recording much faster. Next, we needed to score the film. I was trying to find songs on free databases, looking at subscriptions to commercial-use music platforms and it just wasn’t working. I also didn’t want to pay a lot of money and end up not finding a song that’s an exact fit. At least with a score for the film I know that the music was made just for “Do It for Grandma.” Praying for guidance, I discovered SoundBetter. I put a description regarding the type of music I wanted, and Marco Ielpo not only responded quickly, but he was also able to provide a sample of his work for the film – which we ended up making the final cut with just a few minor changes. He was patient,

I T

F O R

as there were times I was like “add a more hip hop feel to this” and asked him to change things he originally had, only to get feedback from the team that his way was preferred and a better fit. Having an original score allowed us to build anticipation and emphasize comedic moments effectively in ways existing music could not. Returning to the opening scene song, a chance encounter on Instagram with my fellow Alabama State Univesity alumna, Erica Lanette, and her song “Honey” featuring Dray South, struck the perfect balance. Its vibe complemented the scene without distracting, amplifying the comedic impact. Our collective efforts led to an official selection for a music film festival—an incredible blessing and validation of our creative endeavors.

Crowdfunding Success for Indie Films: Lessons from "Do It for Grandma" by: Kimberly L. Thomas In the golden age of independent filmmaking, oneword rings with the sound of possibility: crowdfunding. It’s a field where passion meets practicality, and for the creators of the hit short comedy “Do It for Grandma,” it was a gateway to realizing their cinematic dream. Here, we dissect the essentials of a triumphant crowdfunding campaign, garnished with firsthand anecdotes from “Do It for Grandma’s” fundraising journey. 1. Understanding Your Audience: Before the “Do It for Grandma” team launched their campaign, they knew who their film would resonate with—comedy lovers and supporters of indie arts. Identifying your audience is critical. Understand their interests, their social media habits, and their potential to become not just “backers” but also promoters of your project. What incentives would they like for promoting the film? At what time of day is your audience usually active on social media so they can actively engage with posts? Do they feel comfortable sending their funds to a third-party website such as Kickstarter or sending funds directly to you? 2. Crafting Your Story: A compelling narrative is your campaign’s heartbeat. “Do It for Grandma” didn’t just sell a film; it sold a story of passion, a comedic vision, and the promise of laughter. Your pitch should be authentic, engaging, and clear. It’s not just about what your film is, but why it matters. Try bringing your logline to life on your social media and campaign pages. Why is raising the money for this film important? Explain why the film is important to you and let your audience in on how production (pre, during, and post) works. Let your audience hear from you (the director) and your team (cinematographer, actors, and assistants) firsthand. Discuss challenges, your genuine desire for raising the funds, where the funds will go, how the film came about, and future opportunities.

5 6

3. Setting Realistic Goals: Ambition is a double-edged sword. Set a goal too high, and you risk falling short; set it too low, and you may not cover your costs. “Do It for Grandma” set a modest, attainable goal, creating a sense of urgency and achievability that spurred potential backers to action. As you see your goals being reached, don’t be shy about increasing your expectations. Do It For Grandma started with a $2.5k goal and increased it to $5k, $7k, and then $10k over the course of 3 months. Keep in mind processing fees from each platform you decide to crowdfund from. Setting deadlines gives you motivation to push harder and gives your supporters a sense of urgency to support. 4. Rewarding Your Backers: Rewards are a cornerstone of crowdfunding. The “Do It for Grandma” team offered everything from personalized shoutouts to exclusive behind-the-scenes content. Think of rewards that offer value, involvement, and appreciation for contributions of all sizes. The rewards should reflect your film and audience. This is a way to show your appreciation to those who financially contributed to your film. Make sure the price makes sense with the incentive you are giving. Get creative and have fun while showing your appreciation. 5. Maintaining Momentum: Launching the campaign is just the beginning. “Do It for Grandma” kept the energy high through regular updates, engaging content, and milestones that celebrated every success. Keep the conversation going. Every update is an opportunity to re-engage and attract new backers. Utilize your website (if you have one), social media pages, email updates, and direct marketing strategies. Aim to post 1-2 times a day, 3 times on a good day. Inform your backers or supporters on production, film festival submissions, incentive rewards, and more. Share news that is anticipat-

D O ed—like a trailer release or an Instagram Live with the cast. Another way to maintain momentum is to tell a friend to tell a friend. Reach out to 10 people you know and tell them to share your crowdfunding with another 10 people. Engage your backers by creating engaging content. Avoid spamming or overwhelming them with a ton of information. Try using polls or voting features on social media. 6. Visual Appeal: We live in a visual age. “Do It for Grandma” used a vibrant campaign video and engaging imagery to draw people in. Your campaign should look professional and be visually compelling to stand out in a crowded digital landscape. There were 3 phases in the “Do It for Grandma” crowdfund, which means there were 3 different phases on their social media. In the first phase, you got to see the face of the director and cast, so neutral colors were used. In the next phase, there was a consistent variation of the color blue, and the last phase was the color orange. As of now, the film has had several screenings and film selections, so laurel wreaths and awards have been posted recently to celebrate this achievement. Their page has used several features such as highlights, IGTV, regular posts, and lives—all having a consistent, sleek, indie film tone. What voice and tone do you want your audience to see and feel on your page? 7. Leveraging Social Media: Social media was the megaphone for “Do It for Grandma.” Platforms like Facebook and Instagram can amplify your message exponentially. Use these tools not just to broadcast, but to dialogue with your audience, building a community around your film. This is what brings a sense of community to your page, film, or whatever you are crowdfunding for. Involvement is the key piece of leveraging and creating a sense of belonging on your page. Please note, it is okay to use different strategies for different platforms; what works for Instagram may not work for Facebook. 8. Press and Partnerships: Don’t underestimate the power of the press and strategic partnerships. The team behind “Do It for Grandma” reached out to comedy blogs, indie film forums, and local media, each amplifying their voice to different audiences. The power of connections. Another way to foster a sense of community and involvement as well as

I T

F O R

G R A N D M A

garner more views on your social media pages. This gives a chance to expand your network within your chosen industry and gives your backers a chance to see your craft and work in a different light. 9. Transparency and Trust: Be transparent about where the funds are going. Backers of “Do It for Grandma” were kept in the loop at every stage, fostering trust and investment in the film’s success. Transparency isn’t just good ethics; it’s good business. Give your backers reassurance by providing them with information on where the funds are being used, such as hair and makeup, licenses and insurance, wardrobe, props, or whatever is needed for the film. A simple weekly or biweekly email can go a long way. Inform your backers about the good and the not-so-good. Keep them in the loop during and after the crowdfunding. To spice things up a bit, host a special contest for your backers. 10. The Power of Persistence: Crowdfunding is not for the faint of heart. “Do It for Grandma” faced its share of slow days and setbacks. Persistence, combined with a willingness to adapt strategies on the fly, was key to pushing through the lulls. Slow days will happen, but do not give up. Persevere! When 2 days seem like a month has gone by and no money has been contributed and you’ve been pressing hard on social media—use direct marketing. Pick up the phone and personally call individuals you know. Old professors, grandparents, best friends, a connection from a conference you attended a while back—use your networking skills. 11. Post-Campaign Follow-Through: Once the campaign ends, the real work begins. “Do It for Grandma” honored its commitments to backers, delivering rewards on time and continuing to engage with its community. This follow-through ensures that your first backers will be there to support your next project. Following through with delivering rewards in a timely manner also builds trust for future endeavors.

TIPS FOR GETTING INTO FILM FESTIVALS BY: ASHLEY C. THOMAS

Festivals provide a platform for your film to be seen by a diverse audience, including industry professionals, critics, and potential distributors. This exposure can lead to recognition, awards, and visibility for your work. However, before your film can be screened at a festival, it must be selected. Here are some tips related to how I believe our film was able to get accepted into so many festivals: 1. SUBMIT THE BEST VERSION POSSIBLE: There are several festivals that will take versions prior to your final exhibition copy. However, make sure whatever you submit is the best version possible in every aspect (e.g., sound, credits, editing) at the time of submitting. 2. ALLOCATE FUNDING FOR FESTIVALS: After spending thousands on a film, it can be stressful to try to find funding to gain exposure for your film. I encourage allocating funds in your budget during pre-production. A good starting point is $500, in my opinion. Many submissions take place on Film Freeway which is a user-friendly website for filmmakers. I used the Gold monthly subscription to get discounts, and I looked for discount codes, which saved a lot of money. Also, films average a 10% acceptance rate for festivals, so that means you may have to submit to at least 10 festivals to get one official selection. Keep that in mind and focus on the festivals you’re most likely to get accepted in. 3. MAKE SURE YOUR FILM ALIGNS WITH THE FESTIVALS YOU APPLY TO: Look at their previous selections to see if yours matches the style of any other ones they are focused on in terms of genre, length, quality of production, etc. Pay attention to festival themes, the “About” section of the festival on FilmFreeway, as well as the rules (ex: If your film is already public on the Internet, certain festivals may not accept it.). 4. SUBMIT DURING EARLY DEADLINES: Many festivals have selected a lot of their films by the late deadline, so almost all our festival submissions were during the early or regular deadlines.

7 0

D O

I T

F O R

G R A N D M A

5. WRITE A COVER LETTER: Keep it short and impactful. The ones I wrote were no more than 6 short sentences. I started off with a basic template and adapted it for each festival. For example, for festivals that valued music, I emphasized our original score and our original song in the end credits. For festivals that were focused on “underground” (low-budget, indie) filmmaking, I emphasized how we crowdfunded and had more than 50 donors and a small team of people wearing multiple hats. I also informed them if any of us lived near the festival location and whether we’d be in attendance if selected. Lastly, I mentioned if the world, state, or city premiere was still available. 6. MAKE SURE PROMOTIONAL MATERIALS ARE READY: Your trailer, bios, headshots, director’s statement, movie poster, credits, etc. are all important and festivals appreciate when you have those items together before they make official selections. Before submitting, we made sure all our promotional materials were uploaded to FilmFreeway. One festival complimented us on this, stating that it made their work much easier.

7. “SHOOT FOR THE STARS” BUT DON’T OVERLOOK YOUR SMALLER FESTIVALS: Although we applied for Oscar-qualifying and more prominent festivals, we also looked for more local festivals in our area that were closer to our donors and team. In addition, smaller festivals often have higher selection rates. However, don’t underestimate their influence or selection criteria. Newer festivals want to build their credibility and recognition and are looking for high-quality films also. 8. SUBMIT TO AS MANY FESTIVALS AS POSSIBLE: We submitted to as many as our budget could afford and that helped increase our chances of acceptance. Now, with each official selection and award, we are gaining more exposure and have people asking us how they can view the film.

When Faith Reunites Paths: A Legacy Highlight Twelve years ago, during her undergraduate journey, Director Ashley C. Thomas crossed paths with an inspiring individual who is now our LEGACY Highlight. Ten Strategies for Building Exceptional Teams Whether it's a church restoration, a community garden project, or an independent film, the caliber of any venture is mirrored in the unity and vigor of its team. Building a dynamic team in these community-oriented spaces involves a cocktail of leadership, shared purpose, and interpersonal chemistry. Here’s how you can weave together a group of individuals into a formidable team for any project beyond the confines of your home. 1. Envision Success Together: Before diving into tasks, gather your group and collectively envision what success looks like for your project. Whether it's enhancing community life or creating a film that moves hearts, a united vision binds the team together with a shared sense of purpose. 2. Map Out Complementary Talents: Every successful team is a mosaic of talents where each piece complements the next. Identify the unique skills your project needs and recruit volunteers or team members whose talents can fill those spaces, creating a tapestry of capabilities. 3. Prioritize Passion and Resilience: Enthusiasm is infectious, and resilience is crucial. Seek out individuals who not only show a fervor for the project’s theme but also demonstrate the grit to push through challenges. 4. Embrace a Spectrum of Perspectives: Diversity isn’t just beneficial; it’s essential. A team with varied backgrounds and experiences can offer a wealth of ideas and solutions, driving innovation and broadening the project’s appeal. 5. Clarify Roles to Empower: A well-defined role is like a compass—it guides and empowers. Ensure every member knows their role, understands its significance, and feels equipped to fulfill it with excellence.

8 6

6. Champion Transparent Dialogue: A team thrives on honesty and openness. Establish a culture where everyone feels comfortable sharing ideas and concerns, fostering an atmosphere of collaborative problem-solving. 7. Build a Foundation of Trust: In any community setting, trust is the glue that holds a team together. Engage in practices that build reliability and respect, such as following through on promises and valuing each person’s input. 8. Strengthen Bonds Beyond the Task: Take time for team-building exercises that may not relate directly to the project but enhance group cohesion. This investment can turn a group of individuals into a close-knit team. 9. Acknowledge Efforts and Milestones: Recognition is a powerful motivator. Celebrate both the small victories and major milestones, and always acknowledge the hard work and dedication of your team members. 10. Inspire Through Servant Leadership: As a leader, serve your team’s needs and inspire through action. A leader who works alongside the team, ready to support and guide, can elevate the entire project. Assembling a dynamic team for a community, church, or creative project requires more than just gathering bodies. It demands strategic thought, an understanding of human dynamics, and a heart for service. By fostering these ten cornerstones, you create more than a team; you build a community within a community, one that is robust, focused, and charged with purpose. When individuals come together with a common goal, supported by mutual respect and a clear vision, there’s no limit to what can be achieved.

Overthinking, is the act of dwelling excessively on thoughts, can paralyze progress and hinder personal growth. In this article, we explore the harmful effects of overthinking and provide strategies to break free from its grip, drawing inspiration from the scripture found in Philippians 4:8-9 (MSG), Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies. Overthinking involves deeply thinking on thoughts to the point where they become beliefs that shape our reality. It’s an all-too-common challenge, often fueled by stress, anxiety, self-esteem issues, trauma, and self-doubt. Regardless of your personal triggers, it’s important to recognize that everyone occasionally succumbs to overthinking. Identifying the signs is crucial: repetitive thoughts, sleepless nights due to worry, decision-making struggles, and second-guessing choices are all indicators. Overthinking can take a toll on your mood and overall well-being, making self-awareness the key to transforming your mindset. The consequences of overthinking are significant and detrimental. It saps your positive energy, traps you in problem-focused thinking rather than seeking solutions, and can severely damage your mental health. Philippians 4:8-9 (MSG) offers profound wisdom for conquering overthinking. It encourages us to focus our minds on what is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable—the qualities that align with positive thinking and mental well-being.

8 8

It advises us to meditate on the best rather than the worst in life and to find comfort in God. Here are some practical steps, inspired by Philippians 4:8-9, to help you overcome overthinking: 1. Identify Negative Thought Patterns: Start by recognizing when you’re engaging in negative or repetitive thinking. Awareness is the first step towards change. 2. Challenge Negative Beliefs: Question the validity of your thoughts and beliefs. Are they based on facts or mere assumptions? 3. Cultivate Mindfulness: Mindfulness techniques can help you stay present and prevent your mind from wandering into the overthinking abyss. 4. Seek Support: Sharing your overthinking tendencies with friends, family, or a therapist can provide valuable perspective and support. 5. Reframe Your Thoughts: Actively replace negative thoughts with positive or constructive ones when they arise. 6. Engage in Positive Activities: Pursue hobbies, exercise, and activities that bring joy and positivity into your life. 7. Deepen Your Faith: Find comfort and strength as recommended in Philippians 4:8-9. Overthinking can be a crippling habit, robbing you of energy and affecting your mental health. However, with the guidance of Philippians 4:8-9 and practical strategies, you can liberate yourself from this cycle and cultivate a more positive and fulfilling mindset. Remember that change takes time and effort, but the journey towards a healthier thought pattern is well worth it. Break free from the shackles of overthinking and discover a path to inner peace and well-being.

As the holiday season draws near, excitement builds with the promise of joyful celebrations, heartfelt family reunions, and the generous spirit of gift-giving. Neighborhoods glow with festive lights, and the air hums with the melody of carols, setting the stage for cherished traditions. Amidst the bustling excitement, the importance of safety rings as clear as a bell. It’s the invisible thread that keeps the holiday fabric intact, ensuring every glittering moment remains untarnished by mishap or misfortune. From safeguarding our homes against seasonal security risks to preparing holiday feasts that are as safe as they are delicious, taking care is what allows the holiday magic to flourish. With the essence of care in our hearts, let’s explore 15 practical tips that will help protect the wellbeing of you and your loved ones, ensuring that your holiday celebrations are as safe as they are merry. 1. Home Safety: Secure Your Sanctuary During the holidays, homes are often filled with decorations and gifts, which can attract burglars. Ensure your home is secured with robust locks and consider a home security system. Keep gifts out of sight from windows and be mindful about posting your holiday plans on social media, as it can signal to thieves that your home will be unoccupied. 2. Fire Safety: Light Up Responsibly Decorative lights and candles add warmth to holiday decor but use them wisely. Never leave candles unattended and keep them away from flammable materials. Check your holiday lights for frayed wires or damaged sockets, and always turn off lights before going to bed or leaving the house. 3. Online Shopping: Avoid Digital Dangers Cyber threats spike during the holidays. When shopping online, use secure, well-known websites, and look for “https” in the URL. Be wary of deals that seem too good to be true and avoid clicking on unsolicited links in emails. Use strong, unique passwords for online accounts and monitor your bank state-

ments for any unauthorized transactions. Travel Safety: Journey with Care If you’re traveling, ensure your vehicle is winter-ready with proper maintenance and an emergency kit. Stick to well-lit, well-traveled routes and keep family or friends informed of your travel plans. If you’re using public transportation or ride-sharing services, stay alert and be aware of your surroundings. Health Precautions: Keep the Germs at Bay The holiday season coincides with cold and flu season. Protect yourself and others by practicing good hygiene, getting vaccinated, and staying home if you’re feeling unwell. Remember to wash your hands regularly and carry hand sanitizer when out and about. Responsible Celebrating: Drink and Be Merry, Wisely Holiday festivities often involve alcohol. If you choose to drink, do so responsibly. Never drink and drive, and always have a designated driver or use a ride-sharing service. Keep an eye on your drink at all times to avoid potential tampering. Mental Health: Mind Your Spirits The holidays can be stressful, so take time for selfcare. Don’t overcommit yourself and be sure to set aside time to relax and recharge. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, reach out to a friend, family member, or mental health professional. Food Safety: Feast Without Fear During holiday gatherings, food is often the star. Practice proper food handling and storage to prevent foodborne illnesses. Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold, avoid cross-contamination by using separate cutting boards for meat and vegetables, and refrigerate leftovers promptly. Decoration Dexterity: Deck the Halls Safely When decking out your home, use a sturdy ladder when hanging decorations in high places and ensure all pathways are clear to prevent tripping hazards. If you have small children or pets, avoid decorations that are

sharp or breakable, and keep potential choking hazards out of reach. 10. Package Protection: Thwart Porch Pirates With the rise of online shopping, packages left on the doorstep can be tempting for thieves. Consider alternative delivery options such as secure lockers or requiring a signature upon delivery. You can also ask a neighbor to keep an eye out and collect any packages if you’re not home. 11. Personal Safety: Stay Vigilant in Crowds The holidays often mean crowded shopping centers and events. Stay aware of your surroundings, keep your wallet and phone secure, and avoid overloading yourself with packages which can make you a more likely target for theft. Teach children to stay close and establish a meeting point in case you get separated. 12. Winter Weather: Be Prepared for the cold, cold weather can be hazardous; dress warmly in layers and be aware of the signs of frostbite and hypothermia when spending time outside. Keep your home heating system maintained and be aware of the dangers of carbon monoxide from heaters and generators. 13. Safety with Extension Cords: Extension cords are a staple in many households during the holiday season, powering everything from the twinkling lights on the Christmas tree to the animated lawn decorations that captivate passersby. To prevent electrical hazards, it’s important to use extension cords that are rated for the power needs of your decorations, and that are suitable for outdoor use if they’re being used outside. Avoid overloading cords with too many plugs, which can lead to overheating, and never run cords under rugs or furniture where damage can go unnoticed. After the holidays, inspect your extension cords for any damage before storing them away safely for next year.

14. Turning Off Christmas Lights: As cozy as it may feel to fall asleep with the soft glow of Christmas lights, it’s vital to turn off all decorative lighting before going to bed or leaving the house. This not only conserves energy but also minimizes the risk of an electrical fire. Utilize a timer for your lights to ensure they are turned off automatically. This not only adds convenience but also ensures that your home is not vulnerable to fire hazards due to lights being left on for extended periods. 15. Watering Real Christmas Trees: If you opt for the authentic charm of a real Christmas tree, remember that a well-hydrated tree is much less of a fire hazard than a dry one. Make it a daily ritual to check the water level in the tree stand, ensuring that the base of the tree is always submerged. A fresh tree can drink a surprising amount of water, especially in the first few days. Never let the water level dip below the tree base to prevent the needles from drying out and becoming a fire risk. Additionally, keep your tree away from heat sources like fireplaces and radiators, which can accelerate drying. As the festive lights dim and the carols fade into fond memories, we are reminded that the true spirit of the holiday season lies in the joy and well-being of our loved ones. The glow of the season may be ephemeral, but the echoes of laughter and the warmth of shared stories can last a lifetime when safeguarded with mindfulness and care. Through the conscientious application of these 15 safety tips, we have woven a tapestry of precaution that allows us to revel in the holiday cheer without the shadow of worry. So as you pack away the ornaments and bid farewell to this season’s festivities, take pride in the measures you’ve taken to protect and cherish the gift of safety. Let it be a beacon that guides you into a new year filled with promise, health, and continued celebration.

REDISCOVERING THE TRUE MEANING OF CHRISTMAS As the holiday season approaches, our calendars fill with festive gatherings, gift shopping, and elaborate decorations. However, amidst the hustle and bustle, it’s essential to take a step back and reflect on the true meaning of Christmas. Beyond the presents and parties lies a deeper, more profound essence that has been at the heart of this celebration for centuries.

not just during the holidays but year-round. Christmas encourages us to love unconditionally, reach out to those in need, and offer kindness to everyone. Compassion calls us to empathize with others’ suffering, extend a helping hand to the less fortunate, and open our hearts to strangers. Forgiveness urges us to let go of grudges, find inner peace, and build stronger relationships.

The Birth of Hope At the heart of the Christmas story is the birth of hope, symbolized by the arrival of Jesus Christ. For billions of Christians worldwide, this event holds profound significance, transcending religious boundaries to touch people’s hearts. The birth of Jesus in a humble Bethlehem stable represents a beacon of hope for humanity, reminding us that even in the most unlikely places, greatness can emerge. The story of Mary and Joseph seeking refuge speaks to the idea that hope can be found in unexpected circumstances.

It is essential to recognize that Jesus’ birth is intricately connected to his mission of redemption and the fulfillment of key biblical passages. John 3:16-18 (For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God) emphasizes God’s purpose in sending Jesus into the world - to offer redemption and eternal life to humanity. Romans 10:8-10 (But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the

Moreover, Jesus Christ’s teachings, which emphasizes love, compassion, and forgiveness, form the foundation of the Christmas message. These values resonate with people of all backgrounds, highlighting the universal appeal of Christ’s message. Love, the central theme, reminds us to care for one another,

dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.) reminds us that Christmas is an opportunity to affirm our faith in this mission. A Season of Giving during Christmas reflects the generosity that should define our interactions. Whether giving gifts or participating in charity, the spirit of giving enriches our lives and strengthens our bonds. Family and Togetherness Christmas is a time for families to come together, share meals, and create memories. It’s an opportunity to reconnect with loved ones and express gratitude. Embracing Traditions connect us to our past and shape our future. Rituals like decorating, singing carols, and preparing meals instill continuity and belonging. The Joy of Giving Back Beyond celebrations, Christmas presents an opportunity to give back through acts of kindness and volunteering. This embodies the season’s true spirit and fosters unity. Reflection and Renewal Christmas invites introspection and consideration of how we can

become better people. By embracing the values of love, compassion, and forgiveness, we can usher in the new year with renewed purpose. As we celebrate Christmas, we are invited to renew our commitment to these timeless values and to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, whose birth and message of redemption form the foundation of this holiday. This recommitment reminds us that by following Christ’s teachings of love, compassion, and forgiveness we can strive for a more harmonious world. So, This year, as we deck the halls and set our tables, let’s also set intentions for the coming year—to carry the essence of Christmas with us every day. May the message of peace, goodwill, and unity ring out not just in our homes, but across the world. So, to everyone, in every nation, Merry Christmas! May this season of celebration bring a renewed sense of hope and harmony that transcends beyond the holidays, fostering a spirit of love and togetherness that endures throughout the new year.

I S S U E The holiday season is synonymous with joy, festivity, and, for many, a whirlwind of activities. Amidst the rush to find the perfect gifts, the endless social gatherings, and the preparation of sumptuous feasts, it's easy for the days to blur into one another, leaving little room for genuine connection. Yet, it's precisely during these bustling times that 'Bumping Dots' – the art of making meaningful encounters – can bring the most joy and fulfillment. Bumping Dots is a mindset that embraces how encounters (“bumps”) between individuals (“dots”) have the potential to form connections and reveal the beauty of serendipitous interactions. Here’s how you can find time to make those connections during the holidays.

with Dr. Herb Thomas, Jr.

Bumping Dots Over the Holidays: Making Meaningful Connections Amidst the Festive Rush

2023

Embrace the Spirit of 'Bumping Dots' To start, let’s redefine what we consider a holiday connection. 'Bumping Dots' doesn’t necessarily mean long, drawn-out conversations or grand gestures. It's about the quality of interaction, not the quantity. A heartfelt compliment to a stranger, a thoughtful note in a holiday card, or a genuine smile can all be instances of 'Bumping Dots'. Plan for Spontaneity It might sound counterintuitive, but planning for unplanned encounters can make all the difference. As you fill out your holiday calendar, schedule in moments of downtime – brief intervals where you're free to engage with friends, family, or even strangers without the pressure of the next agenda item. These free spaces are your opportunities to 'Bump Dots'. Be Present In a season filled with distractions, being fully present is a gift not only to others but to yourself. Whether it's during holiday shopping or at a family dinner, put away the digital devices and give your full attention to those around you. You’ll find that this presence allows you to discover the 'dots' you might otherwise miss. Volunteer Your Time Volunteering during the holidays is a prime opportunity for 'Bumping Dots'. Serving at a soup kitchen, wrapping presents for underprivileged children, or visiting a nursing home can lead to enriching encounters with individuals from all walks of life. Connect Through Traditions Holiday traditions are a fertile ground for 'Bumping Dots'.

D O Engaging in activities like decorating the tree, cooking family recipes, or singing carols can open up channels for sharing stories, laughter, and creating new memories.

Listen Deeply During holiday gatherings, listen – truly listen – to family members’ year-in-review stories, children's excited chatter, and friends’ reflections on the year past. Active listening fosters deeper connections and can turn a casual holiday encounter into a memorable moment. Use Technology Wisely While face-to-face interactions are the essence of 'Bumping Dots', don’t underestimate the power of technology. A video call to distant relatives or a thoughtful text can bridge the gap when physical presence isn’t possible. Reflect on Past 'Dots' The holidays are a time of reflection. Reach out to people you've connected with throughout the year. A simple message of gratitude can reinforce and deepen existing bonds. Incorporate 'Bumping Dots' into Your New Year’s Goals As the New Year approaches, consider including 'Bumping Dots' in your resolutions. AUSTRALIA In Australia, Christmas coincides with the summer season. Australians engage in traditional activities like decorating Christmas trees and singing carols, but also embrace summer-specific customs like beach outings and barbecues, often featuring seafood. “Carols by Candlelight” events are a hallmark of Australian Christmas celebrations. Christmas in Australia presents a unique blend of traditional festivities and local customs, adapted to fit into the warm summer season. Australians celebrate December 25th with family and friends, embracing activities such as decorating Christmas trees, singing carols, exchanging gifts, and attending church services. A distinct tradition is the “Carols by Candlelight” events where people gather to sing carols outdoors by candlelight. Christmas meals in Australia often include a mix of hot and cold dishes, with fresh seafood being a popular choice due to the summer climate, although many families still enjoy a traditional roast turkey and Christmas pudding. Barbecues are also a common feature of the holiday, with prawns often being a favored item on the menu, a tradition popularized by a tourism campaign in the 1980s. On Christmas Eve, some families who observe Irish traditions set a large candle in a front window to welcome Mary, Joseph, and the Baby Jesus. This is followed by attending a midnight mass and church services on Christmas Day. The festive atmosphere continues with beach outings, backyard cricket, and street parties. In terms of decorations, Australians often opt for native festive decorations to complement the season. The day after Christmas, Boxing Day, is a public holiday in Australia and is another occasion for gatherings and celebrations, often marked by the famous Boxing Day barbecues.

CANADA Christmas in Canada is a diverse and festive occasion celebrated on December 25th by Christians and many others across the country. The holiday season in Canada incorporates French, British, and American traditions, making it a rich cultural experience. Canadians typically decorate their homes with Christmas trees, lights, and ornaments, and families exchange gifts often found in stockings. Traditional Christmas foods like turkey, ham, and sweets are enjoyed during the holiday. A variety of multicultural celebrations are recognized, reflecting Canada’s diverse population. These include festivities like Diwali and Hanukkah, but the traditional Canadian Christmas itself starts right after Thanksgiving and Halloween, with families putting up decorations and preparing for the season. One of the oldest traditions is attending a midnight mass, where a mix of traditional and contemporary worship music is enjoyed. The practice of sending Christmas cards to friends and relatives is also popular, with a range of designs from plain to comical. In addition to these traditions, Canada is known for its iconic Santa Claus Parade in Toronto, one of the oldest and largest in the world, which has been a tradition since 1913. This parade showcases the communal spirit of Christmas as children and adults alike follow Santa through the streets. The country’s landscape, often covered in snow during this time, adds to the quintessential Christmas atmosphere, with houses and cities adorned with twinkling Christmas lights, making Canada a picturesque holiday destination.

CHINA In China, Christmas is celebrated on December 25th, but it's largely a non-religious holiday due to the small Christian population and government restrictions on religious practices. It's more of a cultural event with a festive atmosphere, particularly among young people who see it as a romantic occasion for exchanging gifts and going on dates. Popular activities include ice skating and visiting amusement parks. For the Christian minority, the religious significance of Christmas is observed in churches where possible, or more commonly in 'house churches' which are generally tolerated by the authorities despite not being officially legal. A unique Chinese Christmas Eve tradition involves the exchange of cellophane-wrapped apples, known as 'Peace Apples'. These often bear messages of 'Merry Christmas', 'Peace', or 'Love', reflecting the Mandarin translation of Christmas Eve as 'Ping'an Ye' or 'Peaceful Night'. Despite Christmas not being an official holiday in China, with businesses and schools remaining open, many people embrace the holiday spirit. Decorations and elements of a Western Christmas, like Christmas trees and lights, are commonly seen across China, including regions like Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan.

INDIA Christmas in India is celebrated with much fanfare, albeit on a smaller scale compared to other religious festivals due to the smaller Christian population. However, the festival is embraced with colorful decorations, lighting, and the spirit of festivity throughout the country. Christians in India partake in traditional activities such as attending church services, singing carols, exchanging gifts, and savoring special foods with their family and friends. A key feature of the Christmas feast is the Christmas cake, which is typically flavored with spices and candied fruits. In different regions, unique local traditions can be seen. For instance, in South India, people might burn earthen lamps on their rooftops, while in north-west India, the Christmas story is often narrated in local dialects. The decoration of homes with Christmas stars is widespread, and it's customary for traditional Catholics to fast from December 1st to the 24th until the midnight service. Goa is particularly noted for its vibrant Christmas celebrations, owing to its Portuguese heritage and significant Catholic population. The state is known for its spirited festivities, including masses, processions, and vibrant decorations. Kerala and Tamil Nadu in the south also have widespread celebrations, with decorations often made from banana or mango leaves, and small electric lights or oil burners. One charming tradition across the country is the preparation of kheer, a sweet rice pudding, which is enjoyed with family and friends during the Christmas season.
