A Sit-Down with Dr. Herb Thomas: Exploring BUMPING DOTS

LEGACY 2024 12

Hello, everyone around the globe! Welcome to the April 2024 edition of LEGACY eMagazine. In this issue, it’s my immense pleasure to feature someone very dear to me—my husband, Dr. Herbert H. Thomas, Jr. Herb has been my best friend and confidant for most of my life, and I’m incredibly proud and excited to dive into a discussion about his latest endeavor.

For those who might not be familiar with Herb’s impressive background, here’s a brief overview. He’s a former higher education administrator who dedicated his career to mentoring and coaching a myriad of college students. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Alabama State University, followed by a doctoral degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Beyond academia, Herb also pastored at Word of Life International Ministries

13 April Issue

in Montgomery, Alabama. He’s a devoted father to Dr. Ashley C. Thomas and Kimberly L. Thomas. Our paths first crossed during our freshman year of college, and it’s been a joyous ride ever since.

Over the 37 years we’ve been together, I’ve observed Herb’s remarkable ability to forge and maintain connections with people from all walks of life. His knack for recalling names, birthdays, and personal details about individuals he meets is nothing short of extraordinary. He is one of the most loyal and supportive individuals I know. It’s thrilling to witness his concept of “Bumping Dots: The Art of Serendipitous Encounters” come to life, supported and believed in by many—a true reflection of the goodness of God.

Let’s delve into our interview. Herb, with “Bumping Dots” making waves on social media and your new book captivating readers, can you share why you felt this was the right time to write this book? What inspired you?

Herb: The inspiration for the book came from several places, primarily my family. Reflecting on my childhood, young adulthood,

and my professional career, I realized these periods were rich with experiences, stories, and strategies about forming relationships and connecting with others—these were the sparks that ignited my desire to write. Let me elaborate. Growing up as the son of a pastor, our home was always a hub of activity. This environment sharpened my communication skills from a young age. I was that inquisitive kid who, after church, would report to my mom about everyone I had spoken to, detailing their family members and origins. I was only eight or nine, but I was already deeply engaged in learning about others by simply asking questions and listening.

During my college years at Alabama State University, I met people from diverse backgrounds. This exposure broadened my understanding of different cultures, which I eagerly shared with my peers. One serendipitous day, I overheard a conversation about the football team needing equipment managers. My curiosity piqued, I jumped into the discussion to learn more and followed up the next day. That single act of being present and engaging led to a significant

15 April Issue

role as the head student football equipment manager.

In my book, I discuss the importance of seizing opportunities by being present, engaging, and asking questions, no matter how brief the encounter. For instance, a few weeks ago, I had a Zoom call where, through attentive listening, I was able to discern a participant’s Haitian descent from her pronunciation of certain words. She was so surprised and impressed that she ordered my book right during our call.

Reflecting on my extensive career as a higher education administrator, I have come to deeply understand the significant impact of authentic, face-toface interactions, especially in an era dominated by digital communication. The subtleties of body language, the inflections in a person’s voice, and the immediate feedback loop of inperson exchanges are critical components that simply cannot be replicated through a screen. These nuances add a layer of connection and understanding that greatly enhances the quality of interactions.

This understanding of interpersonal communication propelled me to emphasize in my book the importance of being fully present in the moment, a quality often lost in today’s fast-paced, smartphone-driven society. By documenting specific strategies and experiences, I aim to equip readers with the skills necessary to initiate and nurture these valuable face-to-face connections.

“Bumping Dots” serves as a reminder and a guide for how to engage effectively with others without the intermediary of digital devices. It champions the idea that while technology can facilitate connections, the art of truly knowing someone—understanding their emotions, hearing the unspoken words conveyed through their expressions, and responding to their vocal tone—requires a personal touch. This personal engagement is not only essential for building deep and lasting relationships but also crucial in contexts such as mentorship, networking, and community building where personal rapport is key.

In an age where digital interactions are the norm, “Bumping Dots”

LEGACY 2024 18

seeks to revive the critical art of face-to-face communication, teaching readers to recognize and seize the serendipitous moments that happen in everyday life. These moments, when harnessed correctly, can lead to significant opportunities and deeper relationships, both personally and professionally.

Now that I’m retired, I had the perfect opportunity to compile these insights into a format that could guide others. Most importantly, I am grateful for the grace and creativity God has granted me to write something that champions what He expects of us all—connecting with people. It is my hope and prayer that this book not only glorifies Him but also leaves a lasting legacy for future generations to cherish and learn from.

Herb, I’d love to delve a bit deeper into the essence of your book. What does “Bumping Dots” mean to you? And could you also describe, in its simplest form, what ‘bumping dots’ signifies?

Herb: “Bumping Dots” to me is a culmination of my life’s experiences—it’s about

connecting, building, networking, and taking advantage of those serendipitous moments. It’s about gathering my thoughts, giving structure to them, and putting it all into a book. My aim was to make it like a universal language that people can understand and relate to. That’s what “Bumping Dots” means to me.

In its simplest form, ‘bumping dots’ represents recognizing and seizing those chance encounters—what I refer to as ‘bumps’—between individuals. In this context, a ‘dot’ represents any person, regardless of age, with whom you might interact. These encounters, encounters with ‘dots’, can lead to meaningful connections and unexpected opportunities.

Herb, you’ve touched on the concept of ‘dots’ representing individuals. Can you elaborate on how these dots encompass the unique aspects of a person, and how this plays into the broader theme of ‘Bumping Dots’?

Herb: Absolutely. When we talk about ‘dots,’ we’re really talking about people. Each person, or ‘dot,’ carries a unique blend of skills, education, talents, and

21 April Issue

personality traits. So when someone says, “I am this,” they’re highlighting a particular aspect of themselves, but that’s just one facet. The beauty of ‘Bumping Dots’ lies in recognizing that a person can represent many things—maybe they’re an HBCU graduate, a member of a fraternity or sorority, or even an avid fisherman. These aspects form multiple entry points for connections, making each individual’s network of ‘dots’ potentially limitless. This diversity allows individuals to form richer connections and explore a variety of interactions throughout their lifetime.

I love that perspective! So, Herb, what kind of ‘dot’ are you? How would you describe the unique blend that makes up Dr. Herbert H. Thomas, Jr.?

Herb: That’s a great question! I consider myself a multifaceted ‘dot.’ Professionally, I’m an educator and a mentor, shaped by years of guiding students and nurturing their growth. I’m also a spiritual leader, having pastored and provided guidance to many over the years. On a personal level, I’m a family man, deeply committed to my roles as a husband and father. I’m also a lifelong learner, continuously seeking to expand my knowledge and understanding. Each of these roles enhances my ability to connect with a wide array of people, making my own network of ‘dots’ as diverse as the experiences I’ve had. This variety not only enriches my life but also enables me to engage meaningfully with others, wherever I go.

LEGACY 2024 22

So, what’s the overarching vision and mission you have for ‘Bumping Dots’? What impact do you hope it will have?

Herb: The vision for ‘Bumping Dots’ is quite clear: I aim to create a culture where every interaction is seen as an opportunity to forge meaningful relationships. I believe that each person we meet has the potential to add unique value to our lives, whether through knowledge, experience, or personal connection. My mission, therefore, is to empower people to recognize and seize these opportunities, turning everyday encounters into gateways for personal and professional growth.

I want ‘Bumping Dots’ to inspire individuals to be more present and engaged in their daily interactions, to listen deeply, and to approach each new person with curiosity and openness. The impact I hope to achieve is a more connected world where people understand the power of their interactions and see the beauty in the diversity of their encounters.

By fostering a mindset that values and actively seeks out these connections, ‘Bumping Dots’ aims to enhance understanding, cooperation, and empathy across different cultures and communities. This is about more than just networking or making friends—it’s about building a foundation for a more cohesive and compassionate society.

Now, when someone gets a copy of your book, Herb, beyond just reading it, what’s your hope for them? What do you want them to feel or think as they turn the pages?

Herb: That’s an insightful question. My desire is for readers to engage in some deep self-reflection. As they go through the different chapters, I hope they recognize habits or skills they already possess in forming connections, as well as identify new strategies they can adopt to enhance their ability to ‘bump dots’ with others. I also want them to reflect on those missed moments—those times they could have spoken up more, or engaged more deeply. I call them ‘missed dots.’

25 April Issue

Moreover, I want readers to consider their own personality types and how these can influence their interactions. It’s about understanding the ‘bumping dots’ mindset, which is all about being present and fully engaged in every interaction.

For those who don’t know me personally and are seeking practical advice from the book, I always emphasize the importance of being present in the moment you meet someone. Be engaging, listen actively, and when you walk away from that conversation, try to remember three key things about the person. These details don’t have to be profound, but they should be memorable enough to help you the next time you engage with them, or even when you meet someone new. This approach not only enhances your connections but also deepens your understanding of the art of ‘bumping dots.’ It’s about listening intently, engaging fully, and walking away with actionable insights.

And when you remember something personal about someone, it makes them feel valued and seen. It establishes a deeper emotional connection and makes the interaction more meaningful for both parties. When people feel that they are truly remembered and appreciated, it builds trust and fosters a genuine bond. This, in turn, can open doors to more profound and impactful relationships, whether in personal life or professional settings.

Herb, some might confuse ‘bumping dots’ with networking. Could you clarify the

27 April Issue

difference between the two?

Herb: Absolutely, that’s a great question to unpack. When we think about networking, typically, there’s a specific agenda behind it. You go into a situation with a predetermined idea of what you want to achieve. For instance, if you’re attending a real estate conference, you might be focused on discussions about investment strategies for singlefamily homes or ways to finance your projects. It’s structured and goal-oriented.

‘Bumping dots,’ on the other hand, is more about letting serendipitous interactions unfold naturally. It’s not so much about having a clear-cut objective as it is about being open to where a conversation might lead you. This could be towards a potential business opportunity, sure, but it could just as easily result in making a new friend or learning something unexpected.

So, while networking is targeted and somewhat strategic, ‘bumping dots’ embraces the organic growth of relationships, allowing for a wider range of outcomes. It’s about being

present in the moment and open to possibilities, regardless of where they might lead. This approach not only enriches your professional life but also enhances your personal experiences, giving each interaction the potential to add something truly unique to your life.

Is there an age limit to who can benefit from ‘bumping dots’? Can children engage in this way as well?

Herb: Oh, absolutely not—there’s definitely no age limit to ‘bumping dots.’ I’ve seen children as young as kindergarteners naturally engage in this practice. What’s wonderful about ‘bumping dots’ is that it’s universally applicable, no matter the age or stage of life. Whether it’s kids in a playground, students in high school or college, professionals in corporate settings, or CEOs of major companies, everyone can use these strategies to make meaningful connections.

This method transcends just professional or educational settings. In my own experience as a pastor, I’ve found ‘bumping dots’

LEGACY 2024 28

to be exceptionally valuable. It’s fantastic for pastors and individuals involved in ministry because it equips them to meet and connect with a wide variety of people in different contexts. This can greatly enhance their ability to engage in meaningful conversations that might lead to evangelism, attract new members to their congregation, or simply share insights about their ministries. Being present and fully engaging in the moment can open so many doors, making every interaction potentially transformative.

Herb, can you share a ‘bumping dots’ moment from your life that isn’t included in your book, something spontaneous that led to an unexpected and memorable experience?

Herb: Absolutely, I’d love to share one that particularly stands out. Just recently, my neighbor, who I chat with often, was celebrating his birthday. One day, I saw him mowing his lawn, and I decided to pull over and, in a playful manner, tease him about getting older. I asked him about his birthday plans, and

he mentioned that although they had initially planned to go to Hawaii, he and a friend were now heading to a concert in Cincinnati, Ohio instead. Curious, I asked who they were going to see, and when he said “Al Green,” I couldn’t contain my excitement—I’ve been a huge fan of Al Green since I was a boy, listening to his music while my mom cleaned the house on Saturdays.

In that moment, my neighbor paused and said, “Let me check with my friend; maybe we can get extra tickets for you and your wife.” And just like that, they managed to secure tickets for us. The day of the concert, I was a bundle of nerves and excitement, knowing I’d finally get to meet an artist I had admired all my life. As we made our way to meet him backstage, I wondered aloud to my friend whether I should call him Mr. Green or Al. He reassured me, saying, “Oh, he’s a nice guy, you can just call him Al.

Meeting Al Green was surreal. I was wearing one of my championship rings, and when

LEGACY 2024 32

we shook hands, he joked about my ring hurting his hand. He was so down-toearth and humble, and it was a moment I’ll never forget. What’s remarkable about this encounter is that it all stemmed from a simple conversation about getting older with my neighbor. That casual chat not only led to an unforgettable night but also allowed me and my wife the extraordinary opportunity to meet an icon like Al Green. This wasn’t just about seeing a celebrity; it was a series of small, serendipitous interactions that beautifully illustrated the essence of ‘bumping dots.’

In the context of my book “Bumping Dots,” this particular moment between my neighbor and me beautifully exemplifies the core principles I discuss. Both of us were fully present and engaging in the conversation, a simple exchange about birthday plans. It was this genuine engagement that led to the serendipitous discovery of our mutual appreciation for Al Green.

What made this encounter truly remarkable was not just the resulting opportunity to meet a legendary artist but also how the interaction underscored the importance of being present. By simply sharing in a moment of genuine interest and enthusiasm, what began as a casual neighborhood chat translated

LEGACY 2024 34

into a significant and memorable experience.

This story highlights the potential blessings that can emerge from everyday conversations when we truly engage with those around us. It serves as a powerful example of how ‘bumping dots’— making those small, seemingly insignificant connections—can lead to extraordinary experiences. Both my neighbor and I benefited from this interaction, which not only enriched our relationship but also provided a profound and joyful memory. This moment is a testament to the idea that when we are open and present in our interactions, the possibilities for serendipity and blessings are limitless.

You’ve mentioned that ‘bumping dots’ is for everyone, regardless of age, and that anyone can engage in this practice. But what happens if someone ends up ‘bumping dots’ with the wrong person? Can that happen, and how should one handle such a situation?

Herb: That’s a great question. In my book, I address the very real scenario where you might

find yourself connecting with someone who isn’t right for you. It’s important to recognize that not every dot is meant to connect deeply with us, and that’s perfectly okay.

We all have intuition, a kind of internal guidance system. Think about the times you’ve met someone and instantly felt a positive vibe, knowing instinctively that you would get along well. That’s your intuition working in a positive way. However, the flip side is also true. Sometimes, you meet someone, and something inside tells you that it won’t work out—the connection just isn’t right. Trusting that gut feeling is crucial.

I discuss in my book that it’s essential to acknowledge when it’s time to walk away from a connection. Not every interaction or relationship is meant to flourish, and that’s a natural part of human interactions. Learning to trust your intuition and recognizing when a dot doesn’t align with your path is key to managing your social circles effectively. It’s about respecting both your feelings and those of others, and sometimes, the most

37 April Issue

respectful and healthy thing you can do is to walk away. This discernment is a critical aspect of ‘bumping dots’—knowing when to engage and when to step back.

You’ve recently had several key events, including your book launch on April 11, a sip and read, and presentations at the family engagement conference. What has it been like to see your work come to life and to share it with such diverse audiences?

Herb: It’s been absolutely exhilarating. Each event feels like a new chapter in an unfolding journey where the concept of ‘bumping dots’ comes alive in unique ways. Watching people from different walks of life—educators, business professionals, students, even casual readers—gather around this idea, discuss it, and bring their perspectives has been incredibly affirming. At these events, you can feel the energy in the room; it’s palpable and contagious. People are not just passively listening; they’re actively engaging, asking probing questions, and sharing their experiences. It’s rewarding to see a concept I nurtured in solitude take on a life of its own, growing beyond the pages of the book into something that sparks lively discussions and genuine interest.

What were your feelings on the day of the book release? What was that experience like for you?

LEGACY 2024 38

Herb: The day of the book release was a whirlwind of emotions. There was a mix of nervous anticipation and profound excitement. After months of preparation, revisions, and late nights, seeing the finished product ready to be embraced by the world was surreal. As I walked into the venue and saw the crowd that had gathered, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude and a bit of awe. These were individuals who had taken time out of their day, not just to support me but to engage with a new idea, something that might change the way they think about daily interactions.

When I read an excerpt from my book aloud, I could see the audience’s reactions—nods, smiles, thoughtful gazes—and it struck me how powerful words can be. Feeling the weight of their attention, seeing their engagement, it was both humbling and exhilarating. It’s one thing to believe in your work in the privacy of your own mind; it’s another to see that work resonate with others in real time. The support from the audience, their enthusiasm, their willingness to dive into the concept of ‘bumping dots,’ made me realize the potential impact of this book. It wasn’t just a publication; it was the beginning of a broader conversation, a tool that could potentially influence interactions on a global scale. The sense that I was contributing something valuable to the world—that perhaps this could become a phenomenon—filled me with a profound sense of purpose and excitement. This wasn’t just a book launch; it was the launch of a new way of seeing and interacting in the world, and I was at the heart of it.

41 April Issue

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced while developing the concepts in ‘Bumping Dots,’ and how did you overcome them?

• Commitment: Demonstrate commitment and dedication to the shared goals and values of the community. Be reliable, follow through on commitments, and actively contribute to initiatives that promote meaningful connections and relationships.

One of the most significant challenges I faced while developing ‘Bumping Dots’ was ensuring that the concepts were not only accessible but also relatable to a broad audience. The essence of ‘Bumping Dots’—enhancing interpersonal connections through serendipitous encounters— needed to resonate across diverse cultural, social, and professional landscapes.

• Adaptability: Be adaptable and flexible in your approach. Embrace change, feedback, and new ideas, and be willing to adjust strategies or plans as needed to better meet the needs of everyone.

equipped and confident in their ability to apply these strategies immediately in their own lives, whether at a casual meet-up or in a formal professional setting. I included step-by-step guides, conversation starters, and tips to eliminate any intimidation factors associated with initiating and nurturing personal and professional relationships.

• Gratitude: Cultivate a sense of gratitude for the opportunities, support, and connections that these strategies provide. Express appreciation for the efforts of others and acknowledge the positive impact of building meaningful relationships.

Furthermore, to demystify the psychological aspects behind ‘Bumping Dots,’ I adopted a straightforward approach. I avoided jargon and instead explained concepts through scenarios and experiences from both my life and those of others. This method helped to illustrate the universality of the principles of ‘Bumping Dots.’

My primary goal was to empower the reader. I wanted each person who turned the pages of ‘Bumping Dots’ to feel

Ultimately, the feedback from early readers who reported positive changes in their interactions was incredibly validating. It confirmed that by making these principles accessible and actionable, ‘Bumping Dots’ could truly make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. This challenge, though formidable, was immensely rewarding to overcome, as it reinforced the core mission of ‘Bumping Dots’—to create meaningful human connections across all walks of life.

Be sure to check out my ‘Bumping Dots Cheat Sheet,’ designed to ensure that everyone can understand and embrace the simplicity of bumping dots.

LEGACY 2024 42

Can you share a story where you have seen the principles of ‘Bumping Dots’ dramatically impact someone’s personal or professional life?

Among the many impactful stories I’ve encountered, one that stands out involves my oldest daughter, who is typically an introvert. After reading my book, “Bumping Dots,” not once but three times, she decided to take a more intentional approach to the concepts outlined within. Determined to shift her natural inclinations, she began actively applying the principles of being present, listening attentively, engaging deeply, and following up with those she interacted with at her business and in her personal life.

This deliberate change in her interaction style led to several “Happy Accidents”—serendipitous encounters that significantly enriched her life. By being more open and present, she was not only able to forge stronger connections with her colleagues but also stumbled upon mentors and advocates who provided substantial support for her projects. These new connections

opened doors to opportunities that were transformative, not just professionally but also in her personal development.

These experiences proved lifechanging, underscoring the power of making small but meaningful changes in how we connect with others. Her story is a testament to the profound impact that ‘Bumping Dots’ can have, especially for someone who might naturally shy away from frequent social interactions. Through her journey, she discovered that even introverts could master the art of serendipitous connections and reap immense rewards from simply being more engaged in the world around them.

How do you see the principles of ‘Bumping Dots’ evolving or being applied in future societal or technological advancements?

As society continues to evolve with technology, I firmly believe that the principles underlying ‘Bumping Dots’ will become even more crucial. In a world increasingly dominated by digital interactions, genuine, face-to-face communication serves as a vital counterbalance

45 April Issue

to the often impersonal nature of our online engagements. The essence of personal interaction—seeing someone’s expressions, hearing the tone of their voice, observing their body language—cannot be fully replicated digitally, and these nuances are what build deep, meaningful connections.

Looking to the future, I envision leveraging cutting-edge technology such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) to further the reach and effectiveness of ‘Bumping Dots.’ By incorporating VR and AR tools into our training programs, we can create realistic simulations that allow individuals to practice and refine their interpersonal skills in a controlled, yet impactful environment. These technologies offer exciting possibilities for scenariobased learning, where participants can experience a wide range of social interactions and receive immediate feedback on their performance.

This approach will not only enhance the learning experience but also make the practice of ‘bumping dots’ more accessible to people who may feel less comfortable with real-world interactions initially. It could serve as a bridge, providing valuable practice that builds confidence and competence before transferring these skills to real-life situations.

LEGACY 2024 46

Ultimately, by integrating traditional principles of interpersonal communication with modern technological advancements, ‘Bumping Dots’ aims to equip individuals with the tools they need to thrive in both personal and professional environments. As we blend the old with the new, we ensure that the art of building connections evolves in tandem with our digital progress, enriching human interaction in the digital age.

What advice would you give to someone struggling to make meaningful connections in today’s digital world?

My advice for anyone struggling to make meaningful connections in the digital age would be to start small and focus on quality over quantity. It’s easy to get caught up in the numbers game, aiming to gather as many contacts or followers as possible, but true connections come from depth, not breadth. Choose to be fully present in every interaction, whether it’s a brief conversation with a barista or a more structured meeting with a colleague. Give your full attention to these interactions—put away your phone, avoid distractions,

and really listen to what the other person is saying.

Listening actively is more than just hearing words; it’s about understanding the underlying emotions and intentions. Show genuine interest in the other person’s thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Ask open-ended questions that encourage them to share more about themselves. This practice not only leads to richer conversations but also signals to others that you value their input and perspective, which can significantly deepen the connection.

Moreover, adapt a relational approach over a transactional one. In a transactional interaction, the focus is often on what you can gain from the exchange. However, by shifting to a relational approach, you emphasize the relationship itself and the mutual benefits that come from strengthening this bond over time. This shift can dramatically transform your interactions, making them more meaningful and rewarding.

Additionally, be patient and persistent. Building meaningful relationships takes time and effort.

49 April Issue

Not every interaction will lead to a deep connection, and that’s okay. The key is to remain open and consistent in your efforts to engage authentically with others. Over time, these small, sincere interactions accumulate, creating a network of genuine relationships that can support and enrich your personal and professional life.

Lastly, don’t forget to follow up. After meeting someone and having a promising interaction, take the initiative to reach out and express your appreciation for the conversation. Suggest another meeting or find ways to collaborate or help each other. This follow-up solidifies the connection and shows that you are truly interested in maintaining the relationship.

Looking back at your journey, what would you tell your younger self about the road ahead?

If I could have a conversation with my younger self, I would emphasize the importance of patience and persistence above all else. Developing ‘Bumping Dots’ was a journey that was far from straightforward—it was winding, filled with unexpected turns and

considerable challenges that often tested my resolve. There were numerous moments of doubt where the end goal seemed just out of reach, moments when I questioned whether the path I had chosen was indeed the right one.

However, with the benefit of hindsight, I see now how every obstacle was a valuable lesson in disguise, a crucial part of the process that helped refine and define the principles I am so passionate about teaching today. These challenges weren’t merely hurdles; they were opportunities for growth, each one providing insights that enriched my understanding and deepened my commitment to my work.

I would tell my younger self to not only expect these challenges but to welcome them. Embrace each one as a stepping stone toward greater knowledge and a broader impact. Understand that true growth often comes from discomfort and perseverance, and that resilience is forged in the face of adversity. Moreover, I would advise my younger self to seek guidance when needed and to cherish the support system around me. The

LEGACY 2024 50

Issue road might sometimes feel lonely, but it’s essential to remember that others have walked similar paths and their wisdom can light the way. Nurturing relationships with mentors, peers, and collaborators can transform the journey, making it a shared experience filled with mutual learning and support.

Finally, I would remind myself to take time to reflect on each achievement, no matter how small. Celebrating progress helps to maintain motivation and keeps the vision clear. Patience and persistence are not just about enduring but about thriving through the highs and the lows, continuously pushing forward towards your goals with an open heart and a clear mind. These are the qualities that not only lead to success in developing something like ‘Bumping Dots’ but also foster a fulfilling and impactful life. Herb, with all the exciting developments around “Bumping Dots,” can you share what’s on the horizon? What’s next for you? Herb: I’m thrilled to let you know about the next steps we’re taking with the “Bumping Dots” concept. First up, we’re hitting the road to visit several cities, spreading the word and connecting with readers and enthusiasts in person. Additionally, on May 9th, my daughter and I will launch a podcast titled “Bump and Dots with the Doc.” This new venture is something I’m particularly excited about as it allows us to explore and expand on the ideas in the book through lively discussions and guest interviews.

Looking further ahead, I’m also in the early stages of writing another book focused on ‘Bumping Dots’ in leadership. This book will delve into how the principles of serendipitous connections can be specifically applied to enhance leadership skills. Alongside this, I am developing a class that will culminate in a retreat designed to help individuals hone their ‘Bumping Dots’ techniques. This retreat will not only focus on personal skills development but also on enhancing participants’ abilities to connect and communicate on a professional level, which is crucial for leaders, entrepreneurs, and anyone who might have hesitated previously to reach out and connect with others.

For the month of May, I’ll be touring different churches to introduce “Bumping Dots” through an initiative called “Page Turners.” We’re kicking off on the first Sunday in Prattville, Alabama, at Anointed Remnant International Ministries (ARIM) with Bishop Willie and Prophetess GwendolynBradley. On May 12, we’ll visit Chehaw

A.M.E. Zion Church led by Pastor Gwendolyn Tellis Smith, the following week, on May 19, we’ll be in Montgomery, Alabama, at New Beginnings International Ministries with Pastors Kenneth and Cassandra Cash. We’ll wrap up the month on May 26 at Auburn A.M.E. Zion Church with Rev. Dr. Steven L. Faulk.

These initiatives are designed to not only spread the concept of ‘Bumping Dots’ but also to provide practical tools and insights for applying these ideas effectively in various aspects of life.

Herb, as your book continues to gain traction and your speaking engagements increase, who would you like to acknowledge for their support and encouragement in this journey?

Herb: I’m deeply grateful for so many people who have supported me through this process, and I’d love to take a moment to express my thanks. First and foremost, I want to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for the inspiration and

blessings He has poured into this book. My wife, Christine, and our two beautiful and loving daughters, Ashley and Kimberly, have been my rocks, offering unwavering support every step of the way. To the many family members and friends everywhere, thank you for purchasing my book, attending my events, and watching me grow on social media.

I have to give special thanks to my cousin, James Dixon, a bestselling author and an absolute motivator to me and many others. Thanks also to Dr. Greg S. Reid, a national bestseller himself, who has provided invaluable guidance and wisdom that shaped many of my thoughts.

My fraternity brothers from Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, not only from my Rho Pi Lambda Chapter in Douglasville, Georgia but across Alpha land, have been tremendously encouraging and supportive of my book.

I’m also incredibly thankful to the individuals and leaders who have allowed me to present

at their ministries and various conferences. Their openness to my ideas has helped spread the message of ‘bumping dots’ far and wide. The list of supporters is long, and they all know who they are—I cherish every bit of encouragement they’ve given me.

Lastly, I want to extend a special thank you to Apostle Keisha and Bishop Terrence Caffey. They not only allowed me to use their establishment for events but have also been a constant source of prayer and support. And of course, I must acknowledge RES Publishing and Branding LLC, my publishing company, for their dedication and hard work in bringing this book to readers everywhere. Each of these individuals and groups has played a crucial role in this journey, and I am profoundly grateful for each of them.

CONNECTING THROUGH SERENDIPITY

In the professional world, not all opportunities are planned. Sometimes, the most transformative moments in your career arise from chance encounters—whether at a bustling conference, during a workshop break, or even on a daily commute. These serendipitous interactions can open doors to new insights, partnerships, and pathways in your career.

Here’s how you can harness the power of these opportunities to expand your professional connections.

63 April Issue

1. Be Prepared Anywhere and Everywhere: Preparation is key when you aim to turn chance encounters into professional opportunities. This means having a clear and concise description of what you do and what makes your work stand out, ready to be shared in less than a minute. This "personal pitch" ensures that you can present yourself effectively and memorably, even in brief interactions.

2. Master the Art of Small Talk: Small talk is often the gateway to deeper discussions. Show genuine interest in what others have to say by asking open-ended questions. This approach helps transform small talk into meaningful exchanges. Begin with lighter topics such as the event you are both attending, and use cues from the conversation to explore common professional interests or challenges.

3. Adopt an Open Body Language: Your body language can greatly influence how approachable you seem. Simple gestures like maintaining eye contact, nodding in agreement, and facing the person you are speaking with can make you appear more inviting and engaged. An open posture encourages others to join the conversation, potentially leading to valuable professional relationships.

4. Use Social Media to Enhance In-Person Encounters: In today's digital age, online and offline connecting are deeply intertwined. After meeting someone through a serendipitous encounter, make a point to connect with them on platforms like LinkedIn. This follow-up can transform a brief interaction into a lasting connection, offering a foundation for further engagement and opportunities.

LEGACY 2024 64

5. Attend Varied Events: While industry-specific conferences and workshops are valuable, don't overlook the benefits of stepping outside your professional comfort zone. Events in related fields or even entirely different industries can offer fresh perspectives and unexpected opportunities. The key is to remain open to learning and meeting new people who might bring unique insights to your work.

6. Be Mindful of Serendipity: Recognizing the potential in each interaction is crucial. Even casual or trivial encounters can hold the key to advancing your career. Stay alert and mindful of the opportunities that each conversation might present.

7. Follow Up Gracefully: Timely follow-up is crucial after any promising encounter. Send a personalized email or message thanking the individual for their time and mentioning something memorable from your conversation. This not only shows your appreciation but also strengthens your interest in maintaining the connection.

8. Stay Positive and Patient: Connecting through serendipity requires a positive attitude and patience. Not every interaction will lead to immediate career advancement, but each one is a step toward expanding

Connecting through serendipity is not just about being at the right place at the right time; it's about being open and prepared to make the most of every opportunity that comes your way. By embracing these practices, you can significantly expand your professional connections and uncover career opportunities that might otherwise remain hidden. Remember, the next big opportunity could arise from the most unexpected place—be ready to embrace it with confidence and curiosity.

DISCOVERING YOUR UNIQUE IDENTITY IN THE WORLD OF BUMPING DOTS

In the complex network of human relationships, as explored in our recent interview with Dr. Herb Thomas, each of us acts as a unique dot navigating a vibrant landscape filled with potential connections. Dr. Thomas’s concept of “bumping dots” vividly illustrates how every individual, or dot, follows a distinct path. When these paths intersect, they foster opportunities for serendipitous encounters, igniting innovation, friendships, and occasionally transformative collaborations. Each dot embodies an individual’s unique combination of traits, passions, and experiences—factors that cultivate potential connections and facilitate meaningful interactions.

Understanding Your Dot Identity

Reflect on Your Passions

What ignites your enthusiasm? Whether you’re a Bookworm Dot who finds solace in the pages of a novel or an Adventure Seeker Dot who thrives on new experiences, recognizing what you are passionate about is the first step in understanding your dot identity.

Assess Your Lifestyle Choices

Each lifestyle choice contributes to defining your dot type. For instance, you might be a Vegan Dot focused on animal rights and a plant-based diet, or a Gym Dot who prioritizes fitness and health. These choices significantly influence how and with whom you connect.

Evaluate Your Social Habits

Do you relish the energy of crowds as an Extroverted Dot, or do you prefer meaningful conversations with a few as an Introverted Dot? Your social preferences play a crucial role in shaping how you interact with the world.

Consider Your Professional Environment

Your career choices also reflect your dot type. You could be a Corporate Dot, adept at navigating professional landscapes, or a Digital Nomad Dot, who blends work with travel for a flexible lifestyle.

Exploring Types of Dots

• Creative Dots: These dots find joy in creation and innovation, whether they’re Artistic Dots, Musician Dots, or Writer Dots.

• Intellectual Dots: Passionate about knowledge and ideas, these dots include Bookworm Dots, Philosopher Dots, and Science Dots.

• Social Dots: These dots excel in social settings and include Extroverted Dots, Community Leader Dots, and Social Media Influencer Dots.

• Lifestyle Dots: Reflecting specific life philosophies, examples include Health Enthusiast Dots and Minimalist Dots.

• Adventurous Dots: Always exploring, these dots take on the world as Traveler Dots or Adventure Seeker Dots.

Embracing Your Dot

Once you identify your dot type, you can more effectively seek out activities and communities that resonate with your identity. This could mean joining specific groups or forums that align with your dot type, enhancing both your social interactions and personal growth. For instance, an Environmentalist Dot might engage more deeply by joining local sustainability efforts or global environmental forums.

Conclusion

Understanding the type of dot you are doesn’t merely categorize your interests—it’s a means to deeper self-awareness and richer connections. By identifying and embracing your dot identity, you can make more purposeful choices, find your tribe, and appreciate the rich diversity of dots around you. Take a moment to reflect on your own life: What kind of dot are you? Embrace this insight to enhance how you connect, share, and grow in the constantly evolving dance of ‘bumping dots.’
