Dealing with Difficult People: Jealousy in Leadership
by Rolanda Horn, Ph.D.
Since the beginning of time, women have struggled to gain respect in the workforce. Think about it. African American women (AAW) in particular, had the responsibility of taking care of their homes and children (Horn, 2019). They did not enter the workforce until after World War II and even then, had to face hardships assuming management and professional positions (Horn, 2019). The struggle was real… contending with their White female counterparts, White men, Black men and sadly, other Black women. I say sadly because it would seem that from one Black woman to other, we would understand the ruction we have when pushing through the glass ceiling in efforts to achieve professional goals. Right? This struggle is still real. This is an issue that persists in the workforce today. And in saying so, I think it is important to have a conversation about African American women in leadership roles in the workforce and what we can do to curtail the vie of power and influence.
Here in recent years, I begin to be introduced to the concept of envy and jealous. Well not to the concepts, per se, but to their effects. Jealousy operates through the emotions and can manifest as shame, resentment, mistrust, doubt, betrayal, fear, insecurity, selfishness, and control. According to Strong’s Hebrew Lexicon, the Hebrew word for jealousy is charah (Khaw-raw), which figuratively means to blaze up, of anger, zeal, or to be angry, burn, or be displeased. It is cancerous in nature and if not dealt with, will spread like wild fire consuming everything in its path. The spirit of jealousy is responsible for destroying family relationships (ex: siblings, cousins, etc.), marriages, business deals and congregations. There are references to these examples in the Bible. Remember, Paul had to address the Church at Corinth in 1 Corinthians about the quarreling of spiritual superiority related to spirit gifts. And let’s not forget about the story of Hannah and Peninnah (1 Samuel 1:2-20). This story has many lessons, but jealous shows up when Peninnah becomes jealous of Hannah for receiving an annual double portion of meat from her
husband Elkanah. Peninnah begins to taunt Hannah for inability to conceive a child.
There are several other stories in the Bible where we see jealous in action. If we go back to Genesis, we see read about the brothers Cain and Abel (Genesis 4:1-16) and later, Jacob and Esau (Genesis 25:19-34; 27:145). The most familiar is the story of Joseph (Genesis 37-50). After sharing a dream God gave him about his purpose and rise to leadership, Joseph’s brothers became jealous and sold him into slavery. The one thing that stands out to me in the story of Joseph is that he was not ambitious to seek out the role of a leader who would rule over nations. This was something that he was called to do by God. Though this is lending to an entirely separate article, it is noteworthy to mention that problem more often times than not, those who are on the receiving end of jealousy are minding their business and operating at a level that is comfortable without having to make much noise about their present or future success. However, because of the assignment, anointing or calling on their life, they become a target of the enemy. A target of jealousy. Joseph proved to be a man (leader) of character when he arose to power and did not seek revenge on his brothers.
I am aware of situations where jealousy and envious behaviors have destroyed friendships that had existed for years. As I stated earlier, I have myself been a victim of its sting. Yes, I have. Personally, I believe the spirit of jealousy has cost me opportunities of advancement in my career. So what does God say about jealousy. James 3:14-16 says, “But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.
The New American Standard Bible translates the word envy to jealousy: James 3:14-16 “But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be
LEADERSHIP & PURPOSE | PAGE 7
arrogant and so lie against the truth. This wisdom is not that which comes doen from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing.”
James, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, clearly illustrates the consequences of allowing jealousy to fester in our hearts. The Apostle goes on to say that it is not wise, does not come from God, and is characterized as demonic. But should jealousy be named among Godly women who call ourselves leaders? Why do we allow the behaviors of jealous and envy to exist in the workplace? Would it not seem as if we would do all we could to support each other in our professional endeavors? The world is big enough for us all to succeed. After all, isn’t that what leadership is all about? Developing others and helping them reach their full potential? Essentially, the presence of jealousy is evidence that one refuses to embrace altruism and does not have a true understanding of serving others.
Leadership is a role that requires us to have a level of self-denial and selflessness that ultimately is beneficial to those we are serving. When we are selfless, we are able to genuinely connect and identify with others, considering their needs, wants, and desires as it relates to the overall goal and mission of the organization.
We as women of God in leadership need to put the spirit of jealousy to death. AAW have a triple threat, formerly known as double jeopardy, when you consider how race, class, and gender intersect related to career progression and advancement (Horn, 2019). African American women need to find ways to support each other with the understanding that what God has for us, is for us and the more we give in efforts to promote the growth and development of others, will in turn be a seed for our next promotion and opportunity.
Here are some things we can do to guard our hearts against jealousy:
Cultivating Character: Character is the thing that makes something/someone distinct. Its defined as the internal marking of a person that manifests itself by moral and mental qualities and beliefs. Someone, once described like this: a diamond is a diamond because of its purity. Art is art because of its uniqueness and a person is who they are because of their character. We cultivate character by submitting ourselves to God and asking Him to place His finger on the things in our hearts that offend
WINTER ISSUE
Him and others. But, when He reveals these things to us, we need to be accepting and then willing to acknowledge their existence and consciously work on their removal from our lives relying on prayer and the power of the Holy Spirit. He says in our weakness He is made strong. He also says that if we confess our sins or faults, He is faithful and just to forgive us (1 John 1:19).
Looking at the scriptures we clearly see that the lack of gratitude, covetousness, and ability to see the blessings will breed a disposition of selfishness, greed and the mistreatment of others. If we cultivate a relationship with God that is founded in humility and gratitude, I believe that we will have the essential elements needed to guard our hearts from the spirit of jealousy.
On the other, what do we do when we are on the receiving end of jealousy? This goes back to character development. The most important thing not to do is lash out. John 14:30 says, I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming, and he has nothing in Me. Some translations say that he has no power over me. Lashing out and going tit for tat with someone is a sign of immaturity and gives power to them. This does not mean you not should stand up for yourself or defend yourself when appropriate. However, exercising humility and self-control shows true character and strength. C.S. Lewis said it best when he said that humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less. Humility begins with total surrender to God and His spirit (1 Peter 5:6) and a disposition of the heart that is developed from the inside out. Remember, God
resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6). Secondly, put the fruit of the spirit into action (Galatians 5:22-23). Kindness, which is a fruit of the spirit, goes a long way when dealing with jealous people. Treating others the way you want to be treated is the safest thing to do to honor God and your reputation. Thirdly, do not internalize the negative words or actions that are a result of jealousy and envy. In other words, we need to guard our hearts (Proverbs 4:23). Though it is important to be self-reflective and to process things, do not allow those things to take root in your heart. If it does, you risk the chance of manifesting resentment, bitterness, and unforgiveness. These things ultimately hinder the hand of God in your life. Jesus said, “Whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses. But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses” (Mark 11:25-26). We want God to have a heart that smiles at us and to fight for us in confidence knowing that we honor Him and His word.
Things to remember whether you are displaying or receiving jealousy:
• Cultivate character through prayer and fasting.
• Acknowledge the areas in our heart that we need God to heal and restore.
• Walk in humility.
• Exercise the fruit of the spirit; be kind.
• Do not internalize the opposition you face; guard your heart.
Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by his good conduct that his deeds are done in gentleness of wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, don’t boast and don’t lie against the truth. This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, sensual, and demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition are, there is confusion and every evil deed. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceful, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

LEADERSHIP PRINCIPLE 1: SELF-IDENTITY
Each issue of LEGACY eMagazine will feature a leadership principle to assist women in assessing their professional and personal growth. By providing tools and resources, we hope to empower our global community of courageous women to succeed boldly, confidently, and with commitment. This issue focuses on the first principle, self-identity.
As you consider the self-identity principle, consider how it relates to your own journey. Examine your strengths and areas for improvement, and identify any skills you will need to acquire. In evaluating your development and growth, be honest with yourself. Remember, this magazine was created to help you grow and become the best you can be in your service to God and others. Keep in mind that you are not alone in this process. As a leader, we hope you find inspiration, direction, and resources in LEGACY eMagazine. With His help, we can make a positive impact on the world and bring honor to His name as we grow together.
As a concept, self-identity pertains to a person’s understanding of himself or herself and of the qualities and characteristics that make him or her unique. It gives individuals an understanding of their place in the world and forms the basis of their personality. Values, beliefs, goals, interests, and relationships all influence it. One’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are affected by these factors, and they can change as one matures and develops.
In order to understand oneself and one’s place in the world, one must have a strong sense of self-identity. It also enhances self-confidence and self-esteem, and it helps individuals make decisions and navigate life’s challenges with clarity. By understanding one’s own identity, one can better understand and appreciate the identities of others. This enables individuals to form and maintain healthy relationships.
In order to grow and develop, it is important to assess and reflect on one’s own capabilities. Setting goals for the
future is made easier when one does this. A self-analysis allows one to understand their thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and overall sense of self, as well as identify areas that may require improvement. Furthermore, it allows one to gain a deeper understanding of oneself and one’s place in the world. You can assess your own performance and reflect on it by following these steps:
1. Set aside some time to focus on yourself: Find a quiet, private place where you can take a few moments to focus on yourself. Who are you? What makes you unique?
2. Identify your values and beliefs: Understanding what is important to you and what you stand for can help you to be an authentic you. What is important to you and why? What do you believe in and why?
3. Consider your goals and aspirations: What do you want to achieve in life? What motivates you and drives you forward? What are your goals and aspirations?
4. Reflect on your strengths and weaknesses: It’s normal to have areas of weakness, but it’s important to identify and address them to become a more well-rounded leader. It can help you bring your best self to your leadership role. What are your strengths and opportunities for growth? What are you good at and what do you struggle with? How do your strengths and weaknesses impact your life and relationships? What are the factors that contribute to your success or failure?
5. Think about your interests and hobbies: What do you enjoy doing in your free time? How do these activities contribute to your overall well-being? How do you spend my time and energy?
6. Consider your relationships: How do you interact with others? What role do your relationships play in your life? How do you react to different situations and people?
LEADERSHIP & PURPOSE | PAGE 15
7. Reflect on your overall sense of self: How do you see yourself and how do you fit into the world around you? How do others perceive you? How do you want to be perceived by others?
8. Seek feedback from others: Ask for honest feedback from others. This can help you identify blind spots and make necessary changes.
9. Embrace and learning and personal development: Stay open to learning and growing by taking on new challenges, seeking out new experiences and continuing your education (being a life-long learner). Invest in your personal growth and development daily. It can be a rewarding and enriching experience. Here are a few suggestions:
○ Take some time each day to reflect on your experiences and think about what you learned from them. What went well? What could you have done differently? How can you apply these lessons
moving forward? Look for ways to learn and grow daily, whether it’s through reading, taking a class, or trying a new activity.
○ Practice mindfulness by being present in the moment and paying attention to your thoughts and feelings can help you become more self-aware and better able to identify areas for personal growth.
○ Take care of yourself. Make sure to prioritize self-care daily. This can include things like getting enough sleep, eating well, and finding ways to manage stress.
In conclusion, self-identity plays a vital role in a person’s overall well-being and can significantly impact their experiences and relationships. Understanding and strengthening one’s self-identity can result in increased self-confidence, self-esteem, and a clearer sense of purpose and direction in life. Remember to always be true to yourself and not to compare your authenticity with others. Embrace your individuality, you are bold, beautiful, and brilliant.

LEADERSHIP & PURPOSE | PAGE 17
LEADERSHIP ON PURPOSE
Leadership is a multi-faceted concept that involves the ability to influence and motivate others. Despite the various definitions and interpretations of leadership, one thing is clear: it is a process of guiding and inspiring individuals to reach their goals.
However, the complexities of leadership as both an art and science can make it difficult to master. The science of leadership encompasses the processes, styles, and techniques used to lead a team and create an inclusive culture that promotes collaboration and commitment. Meanwhile, the art of leadership deals with the human element of leading and involves understanding how to effectively engage and inspire individuals, taking into account their unique personalities, behaviors, beliefs, and emotions. This art of leadership is shaped by one’s life experiences and plays a significant role in shaping one’s leadership style and ability to influence others.
The Bible offers examples of individuals with leadership styles that can be related to and provides insight into the importance of self-awareness in leadership. One such example is found in the book of Nehemiah. He is a prime example of a great leader and his leadership characteristics and traits serve as a model for 21st century leaders. Unlike Ezra, who was a priest, or Malachi, who was a prophet, Nehemiah was a layman and held a secular position before leading a group of Jews to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. He serves as a shining example that one does not require a specific position or background to be a successful leader, as anyone can come from any background and still excel in leadership.
“Nehemiah’s experience in the King’s court equipped him well for the political and rebuilding efforts that were crucial for the survival of the Jewish people” (Geisler, 2007). Nehemiah exemplifies the kind of powerful impact that one person can have on a nation. He leveraged his position to bring about order, stability, and a renewed focus on God among the Jewish people. Nehemiah’s life offers a valuable lesson in leadership. He was able to overcome obstacles from both external and internal sources. He demonstrated his strategic thinking by assigning half of the people to build the wall and the other half to stand guard against potential
attacks from the Samaritans (Nehemiah 4-7). As governor, he also effectively navigated the challenges of negotiating peace among the Jews who were discontent with Persian taxes. His unwavering determination to achieve his goals resulted in a people who were reinvigorated, encouraged, and optimistic about their future. He displayed a number of qualities that contributed to his success in achieving his goals. These include:
• Unquestionable Integrity
• Confidence
• Inspiration of others
• Commitment and Passion
• Good Communication Skills
• Decision-Making Ability
• Accountable to self and others
• Delegator who Empowered Others
• Anointed
• Innovative
• Empathetic
• Resilient
• Connected with all People
• Humble
• Transparent
• Visionary Leader Who Served with Purpose
• High Emotional Quotient
I am drawn to the book of Nehemiah because he provides a practical example of how one can use their ability to influence and lead others to achieve a common goal. Unlike many people who do not actively choose to become leaders, Nehemiah showed the importance of self-awareness, and personal development in leading. Many leaders may have knowledge of technical aspects of leadership, but they do not prioritize personal growth, skill development, or leading with a specific purpose to make a positive impact on themselves and others, Nehemiah’s example is a biblical standard for us to follow in our quest to effectively motivate and influence others.
If you have ever struggled with embracing your role as a leader or if you are ready to lead authentically, intentionally, and with purpose, know that, like Nehemiah, you too were created by God for a great purpose.
LEADERSHIP & PURPOSE | PAGE 19
A key part of fulfilling that purpose is being your best self and being aware of your leadership purpose, which is rooted in your beliefs, values, and behaviors.
I have read many books on leadership and even pursued a master’s degree with a focus on leadership. I was also fortunate to present a paper on women in leadership at a conference at Harvard University. Despite all of my education and leadership experience, it wasn’t until I participated in the Truist Leadership Institute’s “Mastering Leadership Dynamics” program that I had a transformative understanding of leadership. Specifically, it was during the fourth session of this program that the science and art of leadership came alive for me. I believe that the program helped me understand how my beliefs, studies, and experiences all interconnected and how it related to my faith. The Word of God came alive for me in a new way and I believe the Lord used this program to help me fully understand myself, my leadership potential, and my leadership purpose.
I learned that how you lead is closely connected to your identity. Self-awareness is important for being an effective leader. It’s about understanding how you think of yourself and how you see yourself. If you don’t see yourself the way God does, you may believe negative perceptions of yourself from others. One of the key things I learned is that if you lead from your emotions, it affects how people perceive you and how you perceive yourself. A good example is Nehemiah, he was known for being compassionate, focused, purposeful, and obedient to God.
Leading with purpose is important, but when our emotions are out of balance, it can impact our thinking and emotions. Two scriptures to keep in mind are Philippians 4:6-7, which states to not be anxious, but to pray and give thanks, and 2 Timothy 1:7, which reminds us that God has given us a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind. These scriptures remind us to lead with purpose and to do so with peace, prayer, confidence, and boldness through Jesus Christ.
Now, let’s go back to the early part of the article. I believe many people have a difficult time leading others because of what they think, how they feel, and not to mention the impact on one’s body when emotions are out of control, and negative implications on one’s spiritual growth. If we desire to lead on purpose, with
purpose, we must first embrace the fact that God created us for a reason and that we were chosen to do something for his will and glory. We can’t let obstacles such as our emotions hinder us and keep us wrapped in ourselves and not knowing who we are. Nehemiah was self-aware. He was chosen by God, anointed by God, and knew how to treat people.
If you serve in a leadership role and can impact the lives of other women, be mindful that it should be done with grace, mercy, and love. I’ve hurt a lot of people in my quest to lead. Unfortunately, I led with my emotions and was not effective. A lot of it stemmed from not being aware and just not knowing any better, I followed wrong examples, and I didn’t have the right circle of sisters to help me, hold me accountable, and be honest with me about my errors. Let me say this, you need a tribe that will be honest with you and speak truth to you and help you to become your best self. Do know it will require being vulnerable and being open to the feedback about yourself. Know that it will initially be uncomfortable, but it will all work out for your good.
Whether we realize it or not, we are all leaders and becoming a better leader takes time and it is a life-long process. You may know your leadership style, purpose, your characteristics, and even your personality type. But if you fail to become self-aware with your inner self (the authentic you), you will never get to where God’s wants you to be in life. Start today with becoming aware of your emotions and what causes you to react the way you do (both positively and negatively). Remember, what got you where you are, won’t get you where God wants you to be. Let’s lead on purpose, Amen.

The Battle for the Soul: Imposter Syndrome
Genesis 32:22-32 (NIV)
Bishop T.D. Jakes, Sunday, October 30,2022 Message
Message Description: You don’t have to fight yourself anymore. You’ve been in this world too long as an “imposter,” and it’s time to take off the mask. When you hide behind the world and reduce God’s influence, you devalue your soul’s importance. It’s time for God’s calling to come to the forefront. Stop fighting your purpose and start clinging tight. You will be blessed if you hold on!

Becoming a Partner, Judges
7:9-18 (NKJV)
Pastor Sarah Jakes Roberts, Wednesday, November 9, 2022 Message
Message Description: When it comes to our purpose, we often wonder: “What am I supposed to do?” But the question we should be asking ourselves is: “Who am I supposed to become?” Before you collide with destiny, a process must take place, and it happens on the threshing floor. It’s where you become somebody. It’s where you recognize you and God want the same victory, and you make a decision to partner with Him. The moment you come into alignment with what He wants to do in your life, you’ll understand why it had to be YOU!

Outside of the System
Acts 4:24-31 (NKJV)
Pastor Sarah Jakes Roberts, Sunday, June 5, 2022 Message
Message Description: Much like routines, we all have systems that impact who we are and how we live. Most systems we’ve designed protect our image and our hearts, but we can’t simultaneously depend on our systems and an all-knowing God. Are you willing to live outside your system? When you dare to break out from what’s familiar, that’s where you’ll find freedom, joy, and peace that surpasses all understanding. It doesn’t matter if it has worked for you in the past; decide today to live outside your system!

WINTER ISSUE
Proverbs 18:24 is all about the importance of being a good friend and valuing the friendships we have. It’s saying that if you want to have friends, you gotta be a good friend in return. Let’s examine the scripture again. The verse says “a man that hath friends must shew himself friendly,” which means if you have friends, you gotta be friendly back. Supportive, kind, and considerate. And the verse also says “there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother,” which means some friends can be even more dependable than siblings. It’s a testament to how strong and valuable true friendship is. It’s a good reminder to us that we should be grateful for our true friends and be a good friend in return. Personally, I have come to understand the importance of clear boundaries and specific goals for relationships, both professionally and personally.
By being mindful of the people I surround myself with, setting boundaries, and prioritizing my well-being, I have formed a supportive sister circle that provides a sense of connection, belonging, and love. I no longer fear rejection or judgement for being my authentic self, and I trust that the people
in my circle will accept and love me for who I am. I am committed to being a supportive and uplifting presence in my sister circle, and I am grateful to have such wonderful and loving women in my life. I believe that we all need a network of supportive individuals to help us navigate life’s challenges and celebrate its joys. I hope this article will inspire others to assess the value of their relationships and ensure they are reciprocal.
Every woman should have a circle of women in their lives who support them but may have a different purpose for being in the circle. This circle may consist of women who share similar values and who are committed to supporting and empowering each other. Your circle should provide you with a sense of connection and belonging, as well as a safe space to express yourself and receive guidance and support. It can be especially helpful to have a circle to help during difficult times or when facing challenges. The circle may even be helpful in helping you to becoming a better you! So, if you were to consider your current circle is it beneficial? Does it support your emotional well-being? When you
surround yourself with your circle do they uplift and encourage? Does the relationship help boost your confidence and self-esteem? Does the circle pray for you and others? Is the relationship reciprocal? Do you give what you are wanting to receive from the sister circle?
I am grateful to have learned some valuable tips that have helped me to make thoughtful and purposeful decisions about who I allow into my life and my personal space. These tips continue to guide me as I strive to maintain my sister circle. The following section has scenarios of friendships and lessons learned from each. Followed by ways to assess your friendships and how to establish a sister circle.
Parting Ways from a Friend Scenario:
Trina and LaTasha had been friends since college, but over the years, their friendship had become unhealthy and tenuous. Trina was very ambitious and always seemed to be focused on career success. She would frequently criticize LaTasha for not doing more with her life and for not being more ambitious. LaTasha tried to talk to Trina about how she was feeling, but Trina was dismissive and seemed to think that LaTasha was just being lazy.
As their friendship continued to deteriorate, Trina became more and more controlling. She would make plans and expect LaTasha to follow them and would get angry if LaTasha wanted to do something different. LaTasha felt like she had lost her independence and was always walking on eggshells around Trina.
One day, Trina and LaTasha had a big argument. Trina accused LaTasha of not being a good friend, and LaTasha finally snapped. She told Trina that she was tired of being treated poorly and that she needed some space. Trina was shocked and hurt, and the two women stopped speaking to each other.
Eventually, LaTasha realized that she needed to let go of the friendship and move on. She found a new circle of friends who were more supportive and respectful, and she began to rebuild her confidence and self-esteem. She learned that sometimes, even long-term friendships can end, and that it’s important to surround yourself with people who are positive and uplifting.
Lessons Learned from Trina and LaTasha:
• It’s important to be aware of the dynamics in a friendship: LaTasha realized that her friendship with Trina had become unhealthy and that she needed to let it go in order to protect her own well-being. It’s important to be aware of the
dynamics in our relationships and to be willing to address any issues or concerns in order to maintain healthy and positive friendships.
• Communication is key: LaTasha tried to communicate her feelings to Trina, but Trina was unwilling to listen and address her concerns. In a relationship, it’s important to be open and willing to listen to and address the concerns of others.
• It is okay to set boundaries: LaTasha had to set a boundary with Trina and tell her that she needed some space. It’s important to recognize when we need to set boundaries in our relationships in order to protect our own well-being and to maintain a sense of balance and control in our lives.
• Respect is crucial: Trina was disrespectful towards LaTasha, belittling her accomplishments and criticizing her choices. It’s important to have relationships with people who are respectful and considerate of our feelings and boundaries.
It’s important to surround ourselves with positive and uplifting people: LaTasha found a new circle of friends who were more supportive and respectful, and this helped her to rebuild her confidence and self-esteem. It’s important to surround ourselves with people who are positive and uplifting, as they can help us to feel more confident and supported.
Fragile Friendships Scenario:
Katie and Rachel had been friends for years, but their friendship had become fragile over time. Katie had always been very sensitive and prone to insecurity, and she often looked to Rachel for reassurance and validation. Rachel would try to be supportive, but she became increasingly frustrated by Katie’s constant need for reassurance. She tried to talk to Katie about how she was feeling, but Katie became defensive and didn’t seem to want to listen.
As their friendship continued to deteriorate, Katie became more and more reliant on Rachel. She would constantly seek her out for support and advice and would get upset if Rachel wasn’t available or didn’t agree with her. Rachel felt like she was walking on eggshells around Katie, and she started to feel overwhelmed and drained by the constant attention.
One day, Katie and Rachel had a big argument. Katie accused Rachel of not being a good friend, and Rachel finally snapped. She told Katie that she was tired of feeling like she had to constantly reassure her, and that she needed some space. Katie was shocked and hurt, and the two women stopped

speaking to each other for several months.
Eventually, Rachel decided to confront Katie and try to salvage the friendship. She explained how she had been feeling and listened as Katie shared her own feelings of insecurity and anxiety. They both realized that they had been struggling to communicate and support each other effectively, and they made a commitment to work on their friendship and be more understanding and patient with each other. With time and effort, they were able to rebuild their friendship and create a stronger, more supportive bond. Rachel learned that even longterm friendships can go through rough patches, but that with effort and understanding, it is often possible to strengthen and improve them.
Lessons Learned from Katie and Rachel:
• It’s important to be understanding and patient: Rachel and Katie were able to rebuild their friendship by being more understanding and patient with each other. It’s important to remember that people may struggle or make mistakes, and to approach conflicts with patience and understanding rather than anger or criticism.
• It is okay to ask for help: Katie struggled with insecurity and sought support and reassurance from Rachel. It’s important to recognize when we need help or support, and to be willing to reach out to others for assistance.
• Relationships take effort and work: Rachel and Katie had to put in effort and work on their friendship in order to strengthen and improve it. It’s important to remember that all relationships require effort and attention in order to thrive.
• It’s important to set boundaries: Rachel had to set a boundary with Katie and tell her that she needed some space. It’s important to recognize when we need to set boundaries in our relationships in order to protect our own well-being and to maintain a sense of balance and control in our lives.
• It’s important to be honest and open: Rachel was honest with Katie about her feelings, and this helped them to understand each other’s perspectives and work towards a resolution. It’s important to be open and honest in our relationships, as this can foster understanding and trust.
• It’s important to have a support system: Rachel and Katie had a strong friendship that provided them with support and encouragement. It’s important to have a support system of friends and loved ones who can provide us with emotional and practical support.
• Relationships can change and grow: Rachel and Katie’s friendship went through a rough patch, but they were able to work through it and rebuild their relationship. It’s important to re-
member that relationships can change and grow over time, and that it’s often possible to work through conflicts and challenges.
Sister Circle in the Workplace Gone Bad (Samantha, Taylor and Nina):
Samantha, Taylor, and Nina had formed a closeknit sister circle at their company. They supported each other through the challenges of working in a predominantly male industry and provided a sense of community and belonging. However, as the women’s careers advanced and they took on more responsibilities, tensions began to rise.
Samantha became increasingly competitive and focused on her own success, and she often belittled the accomplishments of Taylor and Nina. She would criticize their ideas and decisions and would frequently try to take credit for their work. Taylor and Nina tried to talk to Samantha about how they were feeling, but she became defensive and refused to listen.
As the sister circle became more strained, Taylor and Nina began to feel isolated and unsupported. They started to distance themselves from Samantha and formed closer bonds with other colleagues. However, they were still unable to escape the negativity and tension that Samantha brought to the group.
Eventually, the sister circle completely fell apart. Taylor and Nina left the company, feeling drained and unsupported by their former friend. Samantha was left alone and isolated, realizing too late the value of her friendships and the importance of being a supportive colleague. The outcome was the least desirable for all three women, as they lost the sense of community and support that the sister circle had provided.
Lessons Learned from Samantha, Taylor, and Nina:
• Success does not have to come at the expense of others: Samantha’s competitive and self-centered behavior ultimately led to the breakdown of the sister circle. It’s important to remember that success and achievement can be shared and celebrated, rather than being a source of conflict and competition.
• Communication is key: Taylor and Nina tried to communicate their feelings to Samantha, but she was unwilling to listen and address their concerns. In a relationship, it’s important to be open and willing to listen to and address the concerns of others.
• Support and encouragement are crucial: The sister circle provided Taylor and Nina with a sense

of support and encouragement, but as the group became more strained, they loss that sense of community. It’s important to have supportive and encouraging relationships in our lives, as they can provide a sense of belonging and help us to feel less alone.
• It is okay to let go of unhealthy relationships: Taylor and Nina ultimately had to let go of the sister circle and move on, as the relationship was causing them more stress and negativity than happiness. It’s important to recognize when a relationship is causing harm or is no longer healthy, and to be willing to let it go in order to protect our own well-being.

The concept of purpose is a common theme in many religions and spiritual traditions. Many scriptures offer guidance and wisdom on how to discover and fulfill one’s purpose in life.
In the Bible, it is written in Jeremiah 29:11 that “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” This verse suggests that God has a specific plan and purpose for each individual and that this purpose is meant to bring prosperity and hope.
In the Quran, it is written in Surah Al-Baqarah 2:185 that “Every soul shall taste death. And only on the Day of Resurrection shall you be paid your wages in full. And whoever is removed away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise, he indeed is successful. The life of this world is only the enjoyment of deception.” This verse suggests that the ultimate purpose in life is to seek salvation and achieve success in the afterlife.
In Hinduism, the concept of dharma, or one’s righteous duty, is central to understanding one’s purpose in life. It is believed that each person has a unique dharma based on their nature, abilities, and circumstances, and that fulfilling this dharma brings happiness and fulfillment.
In Buddhism, the concept of purpose is tied to the idea of suffering and the path to enlightenment. The Four Noble Truths state that suffering is an inherent part of life, but that it can be overcome through the Eightfold Path, which includes right understanding, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration. Following this path is believed to lead to enlightenment and the end of suffering, and therefore serves as one’s ultimate purpose in life.
Ultimately, the concept of purpose is deeply personal and may vary from person to person. Many scriptures offer guidance on how to discover and fulfill one’s purpose, but it is up to each individual to seek out their own path and find meaning and fulfillment in life.
Jeremiah 29:11 is a well-known verse in the Bible that speaks to the concept of purpose. It reads, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” This verse suggests that God has a specific plan and purpose for each individual and that this purpose is meant to bring prosperity, hope, and a positive future.
Pursuing one’s purpose can be a fulfilling and rewarding journey, but it can also be challenging at times.
Here are a few ways to approach pursuing your purpose based on the guidance of Jeremiah 29:11:
1. Trust in God’s plan: The verse states that God has a specific plan for each individual, and trusting in this plan can bring a sense of peace and direction. It’s important to remember that God’s plan may not always be clear or easy to understand, but trusting in it can help you navigate challenges and stay focused on your purpose.
2. Seek guidance from God: The verse encourages seeking guidance from God in order to fulfill your purpose. This can be done through prayer, reading scripture, and seeking the counsel of trusted friends, mentors, or spiritual leaders.
3. Remember that your purpose is meant to bring prosperity and hope: It’s important to keep in mind that your purpose is meant to bring positivity and blessings into your life. This can help you stay motivated and focused on your goals, even when faced with challenges or setbacks.
4. Take action: While seeking guidance and trusting in God’s plan is important, it’s also necessary to take action in order to pursue your purpose. This may involve setting goals, making a plan, and working towards your dreams.
Consequently, pursuing your purpose is a journey that requires patience, trust, and hard work. By following the guidance of Jeremiah 29:11, you can find meaning and fulfillment in your life and make a positive impact in the world.
So, how do you focus on your purpose. Focus refers to the ability to direct and sustain attention on a particular task or activity. It involves filtering out distractions and remaining concentrated on a specific goal. Good focus can help improve our productivity and efficiency, as it allows you to engage with a task and make progress toward completing it. For example, if your God given purpose is to publish self-help books for children to inspire and encourage through your art and poems, you would dedicate your time, talent, and resources with a goal in mind. If you don’t focus, it leads to a lack of focus which leads to difficulty completing what
you set out to do because of distractions, lack of sleep, and an excess of competing tasks or responsibilities. Developing good focus and concentration skills can take time and effort, but it can greatly improve your overall well-being and fulfilling your purpose.
It is a common belief that focus is a muscle that can be developed and strengthened over time, much like muscles. This means that the more you practice focusing and sustaining attention on a task, the better you will become at it. There are several practical strategies you can use to improve your focus and concentration skills. They include the following:
1. Reflect on your values and passions: Identifying what is most important to you and what you are most passionate about can help you narrow down your focus and find your purpose.

Heavenly Father, I come before you today, asking for your strength and protection as I put on the full armor of God, as it is written in Ephesians 6:11-18 “Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.” put on the belt of truth and the breastplate of righteousness, as I strive to live in a way that pleases you. SOLIDARITY
With Bishop Herbert H. Thomas, Jr., Ph.D.
When All Others Fail, Trust in Jesus
In 2 Timothy 1:15, Paul writes to Timothy and says, “You know that everyone in the province of Asia has deserted me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes.” It’s clear that Paul was feeling abandoned and betrayed by those he had thought were his friends. But Paul doesn’t let this betrayal get him down. Instead, he turns to Jesus for strength and comfort. In 2 Timothy 4:9-11, he writes, “Do your best to come to me quickly, for Demas, because he loved this world, has deserted me and has gone to Thessalonica.” Paul goes on to say in verse 16, “At my first defense, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them.” Here, Paul demonstrates his forgiveness and love for those who have abandoned him, even in the face of persecution. And in verse 18, Paul writes, “The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen.”
Through all of his struggles and setbacks, Paul trusted in Jesus and knew that he would be rescued and brought safely into his heavenly kingdom. In times of betrayal and abandonment, it can be easy to feel alone and despair. But just as Paul trusted in Jesus, we too can find comfort and strength in him. When all others fail us, let us turn to Jesus and trust in his love and protection. He will never forsake us or abandon us, but will always be with us, guiding us through even the darkest of times. So, let us put our trust in Jesus and find hope and peace in him. We are not alone in our struggles. Jesus himself was betrayed by one of his closest friends, Judas, and yet he still chose to forgive and love him. If Jesus can extend forgiveness and love to those who have hurt him, surely, we can do the same for those who have hurt us.
As Paul wrote in 2 Timothy 4:17, “The Lord stood at my side and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed, and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was delivered from the lion’s
mouth.” Paul was able to forgive others and move on from their failures because he trusted in God to empower him and sustain him. Forgiveness doesn’t always mean reconciliation. Sometimes, it’s important to distance ourselves from toxic relationships or situations that are harmful to us. In these cases, it’s okay to set boundaries and prioritize our own well-being.
Ultimately, the key is to trust in Jesus and let him be the anchor in our lives. When we put our faith and trust in him, we can find the strength and courage to overcome any obstacle or hurt that comes our way. So let us hold fast to Jesus and trust in his love and care for us, for he will never fail us. Now, trust takes time to build. Just as we must work to build trust in our human relationships, we must also work to build trust in our relationship with Jesus. This means taking time to pray, read the Bible, and seek out fellowship with other believers.
Trust in Jesus is a journey that takes time and effort. It is about gaining a deeper understanding of His teachings, learning to rely on His guidance, and actively incorporating His principles into our daily lives. Some additional ways to build trust in Jesus include reading and studying the Bible, prayer and meditation, attending church, and participating in fellowship with other believers. By dedicating ourselves to these practices, we can develop a stronger relationship with Jesus and increase our trust in Him. As our trust in Jesus grows, we will find that our lives become more fulfilling, meaningful, and peaceful. Here are some other ways to help strengthen our trust in Jesus:
1. One way we can strengthen our trust in Jesus is by meditating on his promises. For example, in Psalm 56:3, David writes, “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.” This verse reminds us that no matter what fears or doubts we may have, we can always trust in Jesus.
WINTER ISSUE
2. Another way to build trust in Jesus is by seeking out the guidance and counsel of other believers. When we open ourselves up to accountability and community, we can find support and encouragement in our faith journey. So let us be bold in seeking out fellowship with other believers and let us trust in the guidance and direction of Jesus for our lives. When facing difficult times with family and friends, it can be easy to feel alone and abandoned. But just as Paul knew that the presence of the Lord would sustain him, we too can find comfort and strength in the Lord’s presence.
3. Like Paul, we can trust that God will never leave us or forsake us, as he promised in Hebrews 13:5. We can also trust that God will use even the toughest of times to accomplish his purposes in our lives and fulfill our calling. As Paul wrote in Philippians 2:13, “For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.” It’s important to remember that persecution and betrayal are unfortunately a part of the Christian journey. But as 1 Peter 5:10 reminds us, “After
you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, support, strengthen, and establish you.” And like Paul, we can have confidence that God will deliver us, whether in this life or the next. As Paul wrote in 2 Timothy 4:18, “The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen.” Let us hold fast to this promise and trust in the Lord’s love and care for us, no matter what challenges we may face.
In conclusion, when all others fail us and we feel betrayed and abandoned, let us turn to Jesus and trust in his love and care for us. Through prayer, meditation on his promises, and fellowship with other believers, we can strengthen our trust in him and find the strength and courage to overcome any obstacle. May we all find comfort and hope in the love of Jesus. Amen.
