CHAIRMAN’S INTRO Fleetwood has to offer. We have a beautiful Museum, a traditional Market, two land-based Lighthouses along with a Lifeboat Station, fabulous views across to the Cumbrian Hills and so much more. There is too much for a day visit so why not treat yourself to a weekend break at either the North Euston Hotel, Savoy Hotel or New Boston Hotel later in the year.

A very warm welcome from all of us on the Planning Team here in Fleetwood. Every year this dedicated team of volunteers strive to put on a bigger and better event and this year is no exception. Fleetwood Festival of Transport, Tram Sunday, has evolved into a spectacular Festival which offers a wide range of entertainment, activities and fun, catering for all age groups. It’s a Classic Vehicle Show with stalls and rides and the amazing SpareParts Arts Festival. This year SpareParts has been to Sandbach and Crewe where it was incredibly well received. As you move through the town, look out for the other experiences

A huge thank you to everyone who makes the festival possible including the planning team, directors, volunteers, sponsors and artists.

We would love you to keep supporting our event and should you want to ‘come on board’ and help us then please contact us at tramsundayhelp@gmail.com and please remember to tell all your friends. HERITAGE TRANSPORT Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours Salutes the Fleetwood Festival of Transport. Since its inception in 1985 to celebrate the Centenary of the Blackpool Tramway, The Fleetwood Festival of Transport has arguably become the most significant one-day family event in the North West’s busy calendar. This is a remarkable achievement and is the ultimate accolade for a team of very hardworking members of the Fleetwood community who put many hours of effort and meticulous planning into making this event the huge success it has become. The historic role played by the tramway quickly led to the event becoming known as Tram Sunday and in earlier, less health and safety conscious days, the trams actually operated through densely crowded streets running circular tours between Ash Street and the Ferry Terminal. It would be unthinkable now to run such a risk. Anyone yearning for a vintage tram ride will not be disappointed though. A regular service is operated throughout the event between Blackpool Pleasure Beach and Fisherman’s Walk Fleetwood. Our heritage day tickets provide the best value. Adults: £11; Child: £6; Family ticket (2 adults and up to three children): £25. Day tickets are also valid on the light

rail tram service and the Blackpool Transport bus network. A range of single fares are also available along with a Concessionary ticket priced at £8.50. These tickets are only valid on the heritage tours however. Our heritage tours are managed and operated by a dedicated team of highly talented and knowledgeable volunteers, whose contribution enables us to continue operating these wonderful vehicles on the tramway for which they were built. We are the only main line tramway operator that can run both old and new trams on the same system which makes us unique in Britain. With up to 11 miles of tramway to explore, what’s not to like? Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours is a not-for-profit department of Blackpool Transport, so all the money you spend with us helps to keep our trams on the track for future generations to enjoy. Please come and support us, even if you only buy a teddy from our stall! I wish you all a really enjoyable day. Have fun! Bryan Lindop Head of Heritage Blackpool Transport

TRAM INFORMATION Synonymous with Fleetwood Festival of Transport ‘Tram Sunday’ is the Blackpool to Fleetwood Tramway and its fleet of heritage trams. This year the festival welcomes three beautifully restored heritage trams which you can find at the Pharos Lighthouse and learn about their history here.

BOLTON CORPORATION TRAMCAR NO. 66. MAROON AND CREAM ENCLOSED DOUBLE DECKER Now the only survivor of the Bolton Tramways fleet, 66 was built in 1901 by the Electric Railway and Carriage Co. When Bolton, like many towns and cities, closed down their tramways just after the Second World War, 66 was sold off for just a few pounds and the lower saloon become a caravan! In 1964 she was rescued and over the next couple of decades she was restored by a small band of dedicated tram fans. As a precursor to the upcoming Centenary Celebrations due in 1985, in 1981 she was allowed to be the first “foreign” preserved tram to operate in Blackpool to see if the public

8

would ride on such a tram, which must have been a success as she has been here ever since.

“B FLEET” DOUBLE DECKER ENCLOSED TRAMCARS IN BLACKPOOL COUNCIL PURPLE & WHITE FLEXITY LIVERY. 700, 711 OR 719. With the advent in 2012 of the new upgraded tramway with its brand-new fleet of 16 Bombardier “Flexity 2” type tramcars, it was felt that from time to time when demand grew, such as at half term and/or during the famous Illuminations, that the Flexity fleet might not always be able to cope. Therefore a programme of rebuilding some of the spare 1930’s Balloons was commenced. In total some 9 cars were earmarked for conversion which mostly involved fitting a different type of “plug fit” door, to enable them to pick up passengers at the newly constructed LRV style platforms on the upgraded system.

Despite their conversion however, the changes, whilst quite dramatic looking, are in fact, very easily removed and so if in future it is deemed desirable to restore any of the three numbered above, then this should not pose too much of a challenge to achieve. That said, with the plug doors, fitting of a pantograph and a new striking livery that mimics the Flexity corporate style, the trams do belie their 80 years of age quite well.

slightly different, but to the travelling public, they were effectively the same. Over the years, the slightly earlier built English Electric built cars were converted into Twin Car Motor Cars in the early 1960’s and the OMO cars of the 1970’s that probably helped the tramway to survive when it was at its most vulnerable. But the Brush cars seemed to soldier on almost unchanged. In fact, they, along with the double deck “Balloons”, were the backbone of the fleet for many years, right up until the end of the traditional tramway in 2010. At, or even before, the 2012 upgrade, most were sold off and the first in the batch (621) was no exception, moving just up the coast to new owners in Fleetwood, with whom she even spent a time in storage.

BRUSH CAR 621. GREEN AND IVORY SINGLE DECKER TRAMCAR (“THE PRISONER”) When the Lytham St. Anne’s Mayor’s casting vote, saw the end of their trams in 1937, Blackpool at a stroke, lost a very useful fleet that they could call on in times of need. So, the new Manager at Blackpool, Walter Luff, ordered 20 brand new railcoaches from Brush in Loughborough to fill the gap that the erstwhile Lytham St. Anne’s trams used to plug. Similar in design to the English Electric Railcoaches he had ordered a few years earlier and that was because the same designer of them had moved and now worked for Brush instead. For copyright reasons the new trams were

She then went to Beamish Open Air Museum in the North East, but a change of age related policy for their vehicles, made her surplus and in late 2016 she was given back to Blackpool. A donation by “Trams” magazine, who are here at the festival today, enabled her to be cosmetically restored to her 1950’s ornate condition and she is a credit to the skill of the workshop staff at Rigby Road. Why not take a return Tram Tour to North Pier and back on one of the Heritage Trams visiting us today? They will be running at regular intervals from Ash Street, at the southern end of the festival area throughout the whole of the day.

THE WINDMILL PLAYERS

To celebrate our third year of participation in SpareParts/ Tram Sunday, The Windmill Players from Thornton will be moving from our previous Street Theatre performances into Fleetwood Library for the day, bringing our own brand of lively fun! As we’ll be surrounded by books, that got us thinking about how words influence our lives, so we’ve taken the theme of Progress. We’ll be investigating through improvisation, music and

poetry how the world and its people have accelerated from early beginnings to the complex modern world we have today – all in 7 minutes! Our first appearance at Tram Sunday featured a little playlet about the day Our Mam brought her kids on a tram on a visit to Fleetwood. They all had to have a bit of Fleetwood history whether they wanted it or not, and Cyril nearly lost his bucket and spade, but everyone had an ice-cream and a good day was had by all!

13

Last year we asked How Do We Get From A to B? and looked at past and future journeys, from the dawn of the

wheel through sedan chairs and driverless cars to rocket ships and what – or who – we might meet out there.

So pop in and see us at the Library – our performance times are (approximately): 10.45AM, 11.30AM, 2.45PM and 3.30PM

See you there!

WELCOME TO SPAREPARTS to this year’s SpareParts Festival where we will be ACCELERATING through the years with performances in and around trains, boats, planes, hot air balloons, space ships, rockets, robots and even a mobile Octopus. SpareParts is the UK’s ONLY festival of art, performance and spectacle dedicated to transport and travel. As well as all the incredible vintage vehicles, we are delighted to once again bring to you a dizzying display of acts of motion, movement and wonder. The fun has already been going full steam ahead through months of activities all across Fleetwood with our varied participation groups. This year we aim to have our largest contribution from Fleetwood residents in the parade. There is still time to join in with lots of activities happening throughout the day leading up to the parade which starts at 3pm at Fisherman’s Walk. In Euston Gardens we have movement workshops with MAS and Movema, while Albert Street Car Park is this year’s ‘SpareParts Village’, with performances, workshops and interactive experiences. Watch an acrobat duel with a 9m high pole, a flying astronaut, the terrifying Wheel of Death, plus the incredible DRUMGOD all the way from Germany. As usual we hope you will be surprised as you make your way through town on the day, by some of the many walkabout artists who will be

16

popping up throughout the footprint. Euston Gardens this year hosts accessible activities and performances. Virtual Reality experiences see audiences go on a series of virtual journeys and has a swing which can facilitate wheelchair users, while ‘Moon’ by 2faced Dance will be BSL signed. Don’t forget to stop by Fleetwood Market where activities will be happening throughout the day and of course do not miss the ‘SpareParts Parade’ at 3pm, culminating with the final performance of DrumGod to round off the day at 4pm in Albert Street Car Park. The management team, festival staff and greater Fleetwood community have been busy creating an incredible journey which we hope will inspire, amaze and entertain you for Tram Sunday 2018, so enjoy the ride. WALKABOUTS

WATCH OUT FOR SURPRISING PERFORMANCES AND EXPERIENCES ACROSS THE TOWN THROUGHOUT THE DAY, INCLUDING...

PHILEAS FOGG: DAY 79 – DIZZY O’DARE

Join Phileas Fogg and his newly employed French valet Passepartout as they attempt to circumnavigate the world in just 80 days. The year is 1872 and it’s day 79 of the journey. Our intrepid adventurers are just hours away from crossing the finish line, if they can just coerce their hot air balloons to go in the right direction they stand to win a grand prize. From the makers of Baba Yaga’s House, The Giant Balloon Show and The Tiny Travelling Tightwire Show comes a hilarious roamabout fusing modern technology and the classic adventure novel by Jules Verne.

A VERY CURIOUS CONTRIVANCE – CIRCUS FUDGE Seemingly powered solely by Brussels Sprouts, this peripatetic perambulation is piloted by the often unrecognised, and usually confused, Victorian gadgeteer, Keith Robinson. With its wings flapping, pistons pumping and of course the unfortunate but inevitable accompanying sounds of gas propulsion, this very peculiar and curious contrivance is guaranteed to entertain as it trundles along. CRASH TEST DUMMIES – ELECTRIC SUNSHINE PROJECT This pair of dummies need your help to find their missing car and to just stop crashing into things. Our two performers have come together especially for the SpareParts Festival to bring highly “wreck-a-mended” fun and mayhem to the streets - watch out for them as they’re most definitely breaking bad!

25

THE STEAM HAMMER RALLY AND PICNIC – JESSICA ROST

This year’s annual Steam Hammer rally and picnic, sees the intrepid members of the thoroughly forward-thinking Steam Hammer racing club put their foot to the floor, with expedience and cunning, as they race against each other around a seemingly impossible circuit. BOOM BIKES – DAN FOX Dan Fox has been commissioned by SpareParts to create a new soundtrack for the festival composed entirely of sounds sampled from various forms of transport. Steam trains, bicycles, cars, horses. On parade, Boom Bike Bourrée will play their style of medieval hip-hop over beats made using the transport sounds. The soundtrack will also play out around the festival site from a specially designed aerial sound system by Sound Intervention.

TIMES: 11.30AM AT THE LIBRARY & 1.30PM AT THE MARKET

DR YAYA – COCOLOCO Dr YaYa, Chief Minister to the Advisory Committee on Transport (ACT) relating to matters of acceleration within the allowable parameters defined by the contemporaneous ordinances “sic transport gloria mundi” (2018) will appear in person on July 15th at Fleetwood airport to discuss the matters raised. YaYa constantly ascends and descends the steps as they’re being pushed or pulled along. He greets people briefly with homilies, uplifting statements and bonhomie. Sometimes at the top of the stairs, he will give a speech. He’s a mashup of all flamboyant dictators with a heavy lean to the left… he’s a paranoid clown with a benevolent smile… a saint with a Puckish grin… Lady YaYa, Dr YaYa’s sister is an exuberant side-kick, sassy, idiosyncratic and a great exponent of post-truth.

26

AAARGH! – FLAMEOZ Avaste ye! Come join our two salty buccaneers searching for booty and adventures on the high (street) seas. Witness a pair of pirates sailing atop incredibly detailed, pint-sized galleons that glide majestically across the land… as if by maritime magic!

THE PEDALO – RECKLESS INVENTION This amphibious pedalo has been cleverly adapted to take Mfanwy and Gfanwy to places where normal pedalos cannot reach. It’s a two person peddle about with an oceanic theme. Wherever they go they will attempt to impress with their sporting prowess and dreadful stunts. The worse they are, the funnier they get. A surreal combination of boating and cycling. CAVEMEN – EGGPEOPLE Could our ancient relatives be a wake-up call for our age? The Cavemen encourage the public away from their screens and towards playing and sharing in the present, to question modern rituals and the perceived wisdoms of hi-tech living. The Cavemen is a non-verbal anarchic improvised walkabout act that drops three cavemen into the present to explore modern social conventions, encouraging play and people away from their screens. SKOOL OF STREET Inspired by SparePart’s 2018 theme of acceleration, Skool of Street have created a brand-new dance piece. They’ve been working alongside a team of associate artists who specialise in free running, so expect the street furniture to be transformed into the stage as they wow you with their moves. TIMES: 11.15AM, 12.45PM & 2.15PM

VOLUNTEER INFORMATION

28

Fleetwood Festival of Transport is a community event, run by a team of volunteers who have grown it from strength to strength. The team work hard to ensure that the event is even more memorable, successful and enjoyable year-on-year. This means that we are always looking for more people who can help with the planning and organisation and, of course, on the day of the event.

Some skills would be useful for various roles but no experience is necessary, just enthusiasm and a few hours to spare.

The amount of hard work, time and effort that goes into the delivery of this event, throughout the previous twelve months is immense. Just like in any business or organisation, in order to deliver ambitious and exciting plans more helpers, in this case volunteers, are needed to join the team. Could this be you?

If you would like to become a volunteer and be a part of this unique event, please visit Festival Control today and register your interest.

Being involved in the organisation of an event like this, brings a warm glow of satisfaction, new friends, a fascinating new interest and the knowledge that you have been part of making something special get even better.

AD SPAREPARTICIPATION In the run up to Spare Parts Festival 2018, we have been out and about chatting with lots of different group leaders, artists and local residents (old and young) to find out how they would like to get involved; we have loved hearing their creative responses to how transport and the arts can meet - whether that is through an outfit, a dance routine, a giant banner or a character inspired by space travel - we hope you will enjoy seeing the fruits of their hard work and brilliant designs in the parade at 3pm. This year, we have once again taken our Arts Award Scrap Punks artists into local primary schools and on the trams to help signpost pathways to enjoying creative activities, for the third year running we have supported the Dream Scheme group from Westview - we can’t wait to see their trash-eating, ship-climbing, bike-enveloping octopus as part of this year’s parade and our fleet of decorated mobility scooters will once again prove that there are no barriers to getting involved.

museums, libraries, halls and galleries have included banner-painting, mask-design, movement from around the world, sound-art, costume-making, cutting, colouring and generally keeping things moving forward with a big smile on everyone’s faces. If you haven’t been part of the Spare Parts journey yet, there are still opportunities to get involved in the parade, just talk to one of our Festival Volunteers and they will signpost you to different activities taking place in the Junk Yard and Euston Gardens. We are always looking to connect with more groups, artists and local residents and so if you’d like to get involved in 2019 then please do message us on spareparticipation@gmail.com

Each year we have seen participants grow in confidence and in their creative ambitions and we are grateful to our local artists and those from further afield who have worked with us to consider this year’s theme of ‘Acceleration’; we have invited them to think big and they have responded brilliantly. With a respectful nod to the past and the importance of this centenary year, sessions in schools,
