Local Report Is Mostly Positive on Homelessness Officials: Efforts on Housing Having the Intended Impact BRIAN TROMPETER Staff Writer
Homelessness in the Fairfax County-Falls Church area has decreased by 42 percent since 2008, with about 776 fewer people now homeless, county officials announced March 16. “We’re on to something that really works,” said Tom Barnett, program manager at the Fairfax County Office to Prevent and End Homelessness. “It’s very exciting.” Officials released results from their annual “Point-inTime Count,” conducted Jan. 28, which found there were 1,059 homeless people living in the Fairfax-Falls Church area, including 482 single adults and 577 families with children.
By contrast, in 2008 there were a total of 1,835 homeless people in the local area, consisting of 744 single adults and 1,091 people in families with children. This year’s homeless count was down 145 people from 2015’s total. There were 66 fewer single adults with serious mental illnesses or substance-abuse problems; 57 fewer chronically homeless single adults; seven fewer families whose members were homeless because of domestic violence; and 34 fewer families with children. Not all the news was good, however. Officials in January found 139 single homeless adults over age 55, an uptick of 16 over 2015’s count. Continued on Page 23
Vienna Gets a Surprise Visitor Chaz Farquhar works to get ahead of the competition at the annual Old-Fashioned Easter Egg Roll, held March 19 at the historic Freeman House and sponsored by the Vienna town government and Historic Vienna Inc. Rains held off long enough so the participants got a good shot at finding eggs hidden in the tall grass. After the hunt, children PHOTO BY DEB KOLT decorated hard-boiled eggs. See more photos on Page 8.
A black bear and her cub were spotted on March 20 near Vienna, probably out searching for food. See coverage, plus tips for staying safe, on Page 9.
