40 Uncle Elder’s

Prince Michel Vineyard & Winery Reo Hatfield

Prince Michel Vineyard & Winery offers 40 varieties of awardwinning wine, eight types of beer and has become widely available across the state of Virginia at grocery stores and industry giants like Total Wine. Yet, it was the people behind the name that impressed Reo Hatfield the most when he came on board as the company’s CEO in 2024.

“The reason I came here is because the people are so friendly and kind at Prince Michel,” said Hatfield, a longtime logistics industry leader who had done consulting work for the winery in the past. “So, I felt really comfortable accepting that position because I knew the people here.”

Better known as the Hatfield member that helped broker an official truce with the McCoy family in Kentucky in 2003, Reo hopes his business savvy will help one of the largest and oldest wineries in Virginia continue its long track record of success. This has meant standardizing and formalizing best practices across the board, from recipes to employee training to safety.

According to Director of Marketing Kristie Twomey, Hatfield’s support and encouragement has helped push the winery to new heights.

“Reo has a rare ability to help you see your own strengths more clearly, and his motivation inspires you to trust yourself, stretch further, and continue rising within our industry,” Twomey said.

Since opening its doors in 1982, Prince Michel has grown tremendously and has provided fond memories for today’s customers who were once young employees. Owned by Kristin Easter since 2005, the winery is open seven days a week and features live entertainment and an impressive gift shop collection.

Under Hatfield’s leadership, Prince Michel has strengthened its commitment to environmental responsibility. He was instrumental in establishing the winery’s partnership with Vanguard Renewables, ensuring that all grape pomace and associated liquid waste are transported to Vanguard’s anaerobic digesters for recycling into fuel and fertilizer.

In addition to reducing its own environmental footprint, the winery also supports fellow producers in the industry with liquid waste storage, bottling and grape production services. This shared vision of collaborative growth, emphasized by Hatfield, positions Prince Michel not just as a prominent producer, but as a key partner in strengthening the entire Virginia wine industry.

HEALTH SERVICES

Wellspring Health Services Dr. Marc Neiberg

Wellspring Health Services Welcomes Dr. Marc Neiberg, Internal Medicine Physician

There’s a new set of healing hands walking the halls of Wellspring Health Services. An Internal Medicine physician and former U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel, Dr. Marc Neiberg brings more than 30 years of clinical expertise, leadership, and service to the growing team.

Equal parts educator, leader, and clinician, Dr. Neiberg has dedicated his career to training future physicians, supporting military service members, and caring for families across his local communities.

Dr. Neiberg began his medical journey in 1992 when he opened a private solo practice in Pennsylvania. He later expanded his impact by serving the Colonial School District as a general physician, while also teaching at Rosemont College for more than a decade— helping shape the next generation of clinicians.

In 2006, with the support of his family, Dr. Neiberg joined the United States Air Force, where he served honorably for ten years. His career included stateside assignments, a deployment to Turkey, and service during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. His dedication earned him multiple military

honors, including the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal and Air Force Achievement Medals.

Following his military service, Dr. Neiberg continued supporting veterans as a provider at the Delaware Veterans Administration Medical Center before transitioning to Wellspring this year.

A Mission Aligned With Community Need

What drew Dr. Neiberg to Wellspring Health Services was more than a new professional opportunity—it was a shared mission. Wellspring’s longstanding commitment to expanding access to high-quality, compassionate care in underserved communities resonated deeply with him. Throughout his career, Dr. Neiberg has sought roles where he could make a tangible difference in the lives of patients who often face barriers to care.

Seeing the growing need in this region—and Wellspring’s vision to close those gaps through integrated, community-centered healthcare—Dr. Neiberg felt this was the right place to extend his knowledge, continue serving diverse populations, and build upon his decades of professional experience. He views Wellspring as a platform where he can both practice exceptional medicine and contribute to meaningful, long-term community impact.

AUTO REPAIR

Thompson Auto Repair Donny Thompson

Donny Thompson, owner of Thompson Auto Repair, is aiming to win with his shop’s reputation for truthfulness and transparency.

“Honesty and quality is always the main focus for me,” Thompson said. “Each one of my guys have the same drive, the same focus, the same [desire for] quality.”

Thompson Auto has been in operation for nearly a decade. Utilizing the latest technology, such as Hunter ADAS/Alignment, Road Force Balancing and Hunter equipment Touchless Tire Machine, along with technician training, Thompson said that his goal remains to deliver the type of top-quality attention the customer would expect typically only at a larger dealership. Because Thompson Auto Repair is a certified Napa Autocare location, all the work undertaken by Thompson’s team (he has 11 employees) comes with a two-year, 24,000-mile nationwide warranty.

“I try to be affiliated with places and companies to make sure that we’re giving you as much peace of mind [on the] warranty as we can,” Thompson said.

Prospective customers can punch some information into his website, providing them with a rough estimate of service costs

before even stepping foot into the shop. Thompson Auto Repair also provides customers the chance to view all of their car history online at their leisure. All of that information is then sent to Carfax so that, when the customer decides to trade in their car later on, the repairs history is easily accessible.

“I’ve tried to make myself different from just your regular independent car repair shop,” Thompson, who spent years working in dealerships, said. His dedication to the service experience continues to show up in the grateful customer feedback the shop receives.

Thompson recalls moving to Culpeper as a child, when it was ranked as one of the Top 10 smallest towns in the United States. Now, with over a thousand new homes going up—and 65 new customers a month coming into his shop—Thompson is keen to take care of the town he has seen expand so much over the years.

“I love taking care of the community. We do a lot of sponsorships [of] little league [and] local schools and fire departments,” Thompson said. “I try to give back to the community because the community is [why] we’re able to be here.”

COMIC & HOBBY SHOP

Final Boss Brian Horner & Isaac Blessinger

For many, success means transforming personal hobbies into a sustainable business. Brian Horner exemplifies this ideal as the founder of Final Boss, a specialty retail store dedicated to enthusiasts of comic books, trading cards, and video games. He began his journey as a stay-at-home father, where he identified a unique market opportunity within his local community. His venture reflects both entrepreneurial vision and a lifelong passion. Final Boss was born from friendship and common interests, with Isaac Blessinger as cofounder. He is dedicated to ensuring the comics department runs efficiently, playing a vital role in the store’s success.

Horner and Blessinger founded Final Boss with a clear purpose: to create a space where individuals could connect through their shared hobbies and interests. While the store offers niche and hard-to-find collectibles, it also stocks popular gaming systems like Nintendo, appealing to a wide range of enthusiasts. Beyond retail, Final Boss thrives by hosting friendly competitions and curated events. Whether you’re battling dozens of opponents in a gaming tournament or hunting for a legendary trading card, the atmosphere fosters camaraderie and a sense of belonging. At its core, Final Boss continues to grow as a vibrant hub for community and connection.

In its first year of operation, Final Boss relocated three times to accommodate rapid growth and increasing space demands. Alongside this expansion, the store’s customer base has more than doubled — a testament to its rising popularity and strong community support. Customers consistently share glowing reviews, praising both the product selection and atmosphere.

Horner remains committed to maintaining the personalized touch of a small business, focusing on one customer at a time. As of September, he leads a dedicated team of four employees, all working toward the shared goal of running an efficient, customerfocused operation. Looking ahead, plans for Final Boss may include an additional expansion to accommodate a large parlor area and extended operating hours. With a new website set to launch soon and a calendar of upcoming events in development, Final Boss continues to evolve as both a retail destination and a community hub.

Horner is also a passionate advocate for supporting small businesses and shopping local. He encourages others to do the same, believing that Final Boss stands as a model of convenience, value, and community-driven success.

SELF IMPROVEMENT

North Acre Life Enhancement Dixie Aiken

Typically, Dixie Aiken is the one asking questions to help her clients envision a holistic self-improvement path. So it seems fitting that she would visibly brighten when discussing the life coaching and mental wellness tips she offers the community.

“I feel like sometimes I do all the listening,” Aiken said goodnaturedly.

That easygoing nature has made Aiken and North Acre Life Enhancement a Culpeper mainstay. What she offers is not alternative therapy per se—she prefers the term “traditional”— but a collaborative process for people who may be struggling with major life transitions or day-to-day stressors. In lieu of pharmaceutical fixes, Aiken utilizes plant-based energy healing and other techniques proven throughout human history.

What her clients lack, many times, is the wherewithal to take that crucial first step. This is where Aiken, in her own words, acts as “gap-filler.”

“I like to consider myself a bridge for people who may be seeing a professional counselor but are struggling,” Aiken said. “It’s my job to take what they were being told [by a therapist] and help

them to actually incorporate it into their daily lives,” whether that means meditating or something else.

Aiken, who has two decades of clinical experience, opened up shop near the Regal theater in 2023. Her website offers a prequestionaire, though Aiken encourages people to walk into her office on E Davis Street to learn about the “sensory experience” she offers. She cautions that a complete life change will not come quickly, but it’s nonetheless important to try—and do so in a supportive space.

“I let them lead it,” Aiken said, adding her sessions might even include an icebreaking craft activity. “I think that builds trust because a lot of people get tired of being told what they need and what to do.”

Aiken has made many connections in the Culpeper community, including at the Cloverleaf Nook health-and-beauty shop and the Culpeper Yoga Shala and Spa.

“I think [Culpeper is] opening up a lot [with] big variety” of business offerings, she said.

HEARING CENTER

Freedom Hearing Aid Center Freda White

Freda White owns and operates Freedom Hearing Aid Center, a local hometown family-owned and -operated hearing healthcare office. In such a specialized practice, it is often difficult to compete with the larger players, but White says that her goal is to empower patients to rediscover “the joy of sound” through a comprehensive and compassionate approach—while keeping prices affordable to her patients but lower than her competitors.

“We put patient care above all else through respect and kindness, making everyone feel a part of the Freedom Family,” White said.

White graduated from Mary Washington in 1984 with a degree in biology. In 2008 she made a career pivot to focus on hearing healthcare in Culpeper, learning from such notables as Donna Mallory, owner of Culpeper Hearing Center, along the way. With Mallory’s support White received a hearing aid specialist license and commenced on her second career. She opened Freedom Hearing in November 2024, after facing a major setback in August that same year, offering complete hearing evaluations, consultations, hearing aid fittings and adjustments as well as hearing aid repairs of all kinds.

“Many of my patients have been with me since I started my career,” White said, adding that she won’t turn anyone away, even if they

show up without an appointment—even on weekends. “Patients also like that I take the time to explain their hearing loss, which helps them make informed decisions regarding their hearing healthcare.”

White offers a trade-in program for those seeking newer hearing devices, and she will work with people on a payment plan if upfront cash is an issue. Hearing, to White, is just that important.

She credits her partner Gregory and her four children for continually believing in her later-in-life business pivot. Gregory is often found around the office, typically taking care of items on White’s “honey-do” list.

White has received some stellar feedback, including for patiently working with people facing additional problems such as Down syndrome and even a cancer diagnosis. One particularly elated patient literally danced around her office, finally able to engage in the sounds of music.

White is a member of the Culpeper Chamber of Commerce, and she participated in Culpeper Renaissance’s Haunted Hustle 5K race.

“The surrounding communities bring me some of the sweetest patients,” White said. “I love helping these folks better their quality of life through better hearing and understanding their hearing loss.”

POOLS & SPAS

Pool

LLC

Tony and Karen Harris had worked together at Payne Pools & Spas for 28 years when their bosses, Susie and Kenny Payne, asked if the Harrises might like to take over the business. So in 2023, Tony and Karen purchased the business’s assets and renamed the company Pool Blue LLC.

“Even though we have a new name, we technically are not a new business,” Karen said. “We have the same database in both our point-of-sale system and our water analysis system that we have had since 2005.”

Karen and Tony Harris offer such services as pool openings and closings, equipment repairs and upgrades, renovations of gunite pools, spa service and repair, fireplace service and repair, and the installation of safety pool covers made by Loop-Loc and Meyco. As a Platinum BioGuard Dealer, Pool Blue also offers free water testing to customers in the Culpeper area and beyond.

Pool Blue operates Culpeper and Warrenton retail locations. The Harrises decided to close their Warrenton shop in 2023, but due to customer demand, they opened another outlet in the Warrenton Village Center in March. New customers continue to pour in, as

they continue to do so at the Culpeper outlet along James Madison Highway.

“This journey has blessed us in many ways. We have since partnered with Robert Revill at Central VA Hot Tub & Spa outlet to bring our customers Platinum Spas,” Karen said. “We also have a very highquality and beautiful line of electric fireplaces on display.”

Pool Blue is truly a family affair, with the couple’s daughter Olivia on staff as their business manager. Their son James Gregory works part-time for the company when not busy studying at Madison County High School. Additionally, Karen’s mother Jane Anderson helps out around the office, answering phones and filing documents.

“We are truly a family-owned and -operated business,” Karen said. The couple has held multiple fundraisers for the Culpeper community, including a back-to-school supply drive, Christmas toy drive and an animal shelter drive. They continue giving back by donating to local school organizations by advertising on various T-shirt campaigns.

“We love giving back in any way that we can, and are so grateful for all of the support that we receive,” Karen said.

FINANCIAL PLANNER

Clarissa Mae Fleming

Clarissa Mae Fleming knows life in the Piedmont region of Virginia. Having grown up just across the county line in Opal, and now raising her family in Culpeper, Clarissa has spent her entire life here. She brings both personal experience and professional expertise to the financial challenges everyday families face — especially those in the military and government communities. As an Army wife, she has devoted countless hours to learning the ins and outs of the local, state and federal retirement systems.

“I didn’t grow up with wealth, and I’ve felt the struggle most of us face not truly knowing how money can work for us. So when I started in this field, I made it my mission to learn everything — the licenses, the certifications, all of it. Now, I’m passionate about helping others make sense of their money too. I’ve seen people with retirement accounts for 40 years who still don’t really understand how it works,” said Clarissa, who has now been helping families with their finances for over 13 years. Most of her clients aren’t inheriting wealth and many have never worked with a financial professional before. Whether it’s an 18-year-old starting their first job or a federal retiree trying to leave a legacy, Clarissa begins with a simple, judgment-free conversation — usually around 30 to 45 minutes — to understand where they are now and what they want for their future. While her clients, especially in the military and government, tend to be disciplined savers, many haven’t had the chance to build a cohesive, intentional plan. Clarissa helps tie together their TSP, pension, Social Security, and other assets into a strategy that supports both retirement and legacy goals.

“I’m not one of those people who always says wait until 70 for Social Security,” she says with a laugh. “If you pass away at 65, you just miss out. I’ve had to build from scratch, and I know most people around here have too.”

For Clarissa, financial planning isn’t just about numbers — it’s about people. She has sat beside widows at funeral homes, walked survivors through DMV visits, and helped many families navigate the overwhelm of losing a loved one. “One of the most common mistakes I see is a surviving spouse canceling the debit card too soon,” she said. “That can lock up the joint account, making it impossible to deposit that final paycheck or Social Security. It’s a huge, unnecessary headache at a time when people are already grieving. But again — if you don’t know, you don’t know. That’s why I’m here.”

Her work is grounded in service — to her faith, family, clients, and community. That legacy of service echoes through her family. Her daughter works in law enforcement. Her oldest son recently joined her in the financial world and spends his summers serving at Calvary Chapel Crossroads Church camp alongside his younger brother and friends. They stay active in church, community, and veteran outreach. Clarissa’s husband, Rusty, enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2001 — just two months before they were married. He went on to serve in Afghanistan and Iraq, missing the birth of two of their children during his deployments. His service shaped their early marriage and deepened Clarissa’s heart for helping military families not only survive but thrive — both financially and personally.

Eppard Orthodontics Dr. Holly Eppard

If you need braces, Dr. Holly Eppard has great news: The goopy mess of mouth-filling molds is largely in the past. Today Eppard and her team at Eppard Orthodontics utilize digital tools to precisely make 3D digital models that can even simulate how the teeth will move during treatment.

“We can now plan and place braces using a process called indirect bonding, which transfers the simulated setup directly to the teeth,” Eppard said. “The result is a more accurate, efficient, and comfortable experience — and ultimately, shorter treatment times and better outcomes for our patients.”

That’s good news for anyone requiring orthodontics. Eppard says that a key to her success is tailoring each individual’s treatment plan—while ensuring people feel supported as soon as they enter.

“New patients get their choice of a complimentary branded T-shirt and we offer a fun reward system to encourage compliance and good brushing habits,” she said.

In August 2014 Eppard purchased an established practice near Kestner Wayside Park.

“Because orthodontic treatment can span months or even years, trust is everything,” Eppard said. “Our patients see the same friendly faces at every visit, and we celebrate their milestones right alongside them. We [watch] kids grow, families expand and adults rediscover their confidence in their smile.”

The feedback has been largely positive, with parents saying their formerly anxious children are now excited to visit. The key, Eppard said, is to provide a warm and professional atmosphere so that patients feel seen rather than “just another case.”

Eppard’s family includes three children whose activities make the orthodontist even more active in the Culpeper community. She praises its small-town charm and atmosphere where people actively help one another.

“At the same time, it’s been exciting to see new shops, restaurants, and families moving to the area and contributing to its growth,” she said. “It’s the kind of place where people truly get to know one another and support each other’s success.

“As both a business owner and a resident, I really value being part of a community that’s expanding while still staying true to its roots.”

NATURAL WELLNESS

Cloverleaf Nook Andi Snydstrup & Tiffany Crayton-Brown

Step inside Cloverleaf Nook and the world seems to slow down. The gentle scent of natural oils and incense drifts through the air, sunlight catches on glass jars and wooden shelves, and soft music hums in the background. It’s the kind of place that invites you to pause, breathe and simply feel at ease.

That’s exactly what Andi Snydstrup and Tiffany Crayton-Brown envisioned when they opened Cloverleaf Nook in 2023 — a welcoming space where people could explore natural wellness in a way that feels approachable and real. Their boutique offers a curated selection of products, from soothing tallow lotions and calming teas to small-batch tinctures and salves, each chosen to support everyday well-being.

“We wanted to make natural living feel less intimidating,” said Andi. “It’s about helping people discover small ways to live cleaner and care for themselves without all the overwhelm.”

What began as a wellness boutique has grown into something more — a place where conversations flow easily and connection comes first.

“Most people come in looking for something simple — maybe better sleep, less stress or help for sensitive skin,” Andi shared. “We start by talking and listening. From there, we might suggest a calming tea or a soothing balm. It’s always about connection and care.”

Over time, Cloverleaf Nook has expanded beyond its shelves. Tiffany explained, “We’ve added more locally made products, grown our online

presence and started hosting gatherings that bring people together. It’s been so special watching our little space become part of people’s lives.”

Visitors often describe the shop as peaceful and grounding — a place where they can slow down for a few minutes. “One customer told us that visiting the shop became part of her weekly self-care routine,” said Tiffany. “She said she comes in to breathe, browse and sip tea. Hearing that reminds us why we do what we do.”

For Andi, being part of downtown Culpeper has been especially meaningful. “There’s a real spirit of support among local business owners,” she said. “It feels like everyone genuinely wants to see each other succeed.”

Even as Culpeper grows, that small-town warmth remains at the heart of everything Cloverleaf Nook does.

“People here are genuine,” said Tiffany. “They care about supporting local businesses, and we feel that every day. From the beginning, Culpeper has welcomed us with open arms, and we do our best to return that kindness.”

“Everything we do — from the products we carry to the events we host — is meant to help people feel grounded, cared for and connected,” said Andi. “Cloverleaf Nook was built with heart, and that’s what keeps it growing.”

DAY SCHOOL

Highland School Margie Kuzminski

Margie Kuzminski is the Upper School Director for Highland School, an independent day school located in Warrenton with students ranging from Pre-K2/3 to 12th grade. The school will be celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2028.

Highland opened the 2025–2026 school year with 562 students, its largest enrollment ever. Of those students, 221 are in grades 9–12. “Our Upper School faculty have collectively devoted hundreds of years of dedicated professional service to Highland School and our students,” Margie said. “They work in partnership with our students every day to author the culture of our school.”

Highland’s Upper School teachers balance core academics and electives with sponsoring clubs, coaching teams, directing performances, and mentoring students. They also uphold commitments such as meetings, committee work, professional training, and ongoing content development, while remaining present in the lives of students by attending games, performances, and after-school activities. As Kuzminski notes, “These talented teachers and compassionate humans are truly the salt of Highland’s earth.”

Highland believes that the habits, mindsets, and character traits students bring to every experience transform challenges into opportunities to

thrive, lead, and serve. For nearly two decades, the school has launched each academic year with an inspirational character theme. This year’s theme, Tenacity, highlights the power of perseverance. When combined with teamwork, tenacity fuels the ability to build community and live well together. This is made possible through valued partnerships with students, parents, and families—the Highland community united by its “Secret Sauce”: relationships built, reinforced, and celebrated every day.

Margie Kuzminski credits her colleagues as her greatest mentors, expressing deep gratitude for the expertise they have shared and continue to share. Among the most impactful advice she received was to simply be herself. Margie was encouraged to bring her natural energy and authentic presence to her role, and reminded that, with so many ways to be a school administrator, there was no need to imitate anyone else.

Kuzminski’s goal is to inspire leadership in her students. In fact, fostering excitement for pursuing leadership in its many forms is one of her deepest personal and professional passions. She also leads by example. This year, Margie completed a marathon in Alaska—her 57th marathon across all 50 states, a goal she has been pursuing for more than 30 years. Reaching this milestone was deeply gratifying, and it leaves her asking only one question: What challenge comes next?

DENTISTRY

Culpeper Kids Dentistry Dr. Alvin Amante & Dr. Chris Andrews

Since September 2016, Culpeper Kids Dentistry has been cultivating healthy smiles for the youth of the Culpeper community and surrounding areas. Founded by Dr. Alvin Amante, Culpeper Kids Dentistry was built out of the heartfelt recognition of the need for specialized pediatric dental care in our area.

Dr. Amante is a board-certified Pediatric Dentist and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. While practicing as a general dentist in Seattle, WA for eight years, he also volunteered for various medical and dental missions. It was through these experiences as a volunteer that he discovered his passion for treating children and that inspired him to further his education and training in Pediatric Dentistry. In 2012, Dr. Amante and his family moved to Northern Virginia where he joined a private practice as an associate pediatric dentist. Driven by a strong desire to provide pediatric dental care where it is needed most, he relocated his family and opened Culpeper Kids Dentistry. SENIOR CARE

FirstLight Home Care Mark & Stacey Harvey

From the day they were married 20 years ago, the husband-and-wife team of Mark and Stacey Harvey has been building businesses side-by-side. Their shared drive, entrepreneurial spirit, and commitment to serving others led them in 2015 to open FirstLight Home Care of Warrenton in 2016 -now a cornerstone in senior care for the Piedmont region.

What began as a small operation has grown into a trusted and respected home-care agency supporting seniors, veterans, individuals with disabilities, and new mothers. Guided by the Harvey’s leadership and relentless work ethic, FirstLight Home Care proudly serves Culpeper, Fauquier, Rappahannock, Orange, Madison, as well as Nokesville and Bristow.

“We are an honest and caring company that wants our clients to feel completely at ease with their caregiver,” said Mark. “Our goal is for the caregiver to become an extension of the client’s family so loved ones can have a true peace of mind.”

FirstLight offers a broad range of services including dementia care, disability care, respite care, personal care, companion care, and even travel companion services. Every program is centered on compassion, dignity, and meaningful connection.

Stacey plays a critical role in both the daily operations and the long-term vision of the agency. She serves on the Ethics Committee at Fauquier Hospital and has become a leading advocate for dementia education throughout the community. She is a certified Dementia Practitioner and

and professionals.

Mark and Stacey remain deeply involved in organizations that support seniors and caregivers. Mark has served on the Voltran non profit Board of Directors for more than seven years, and together the Harvey’s support initiatives in senior safety, veterans mental health, and dementia education. They also credit their strong partnerships with regional Chambers of Commerce, hospice agencies, hospitals, and home-health organizations for helping them serve the community effectively.

“There are just too many to name,” Mark said, ”but we never want to forget our entire STAFF. They are the ones who make everything possible.”

Looking ahead, the Harvey’s plan to continue innovating. They are exploring emerging technologies, including AI, to enhance caregiver training, improve client support systems, and strengthen the overall care experience for families.

“Our mission is simple,” Mark said. “We want to give families back their quality time with their loved ones-not the stress of being the primary caregiver. Nothing makes us happier than hearing a family say they don’t know what they would have done without us or just a simple thank you.”

Certified Senior Advisor, and over the past year she has led Dementia Friends trainings, helped local businesses become Dementia Friendly, and hosted compassionate memory-care education sessions for families

UVA Community Credit Union Jackie Bowles

When a local bank opted not to renew its lease at its Culpeper location in 2018, manager and single mom Jackie Bowles was out of a job.

But as luck would have it, Bowles was quickly hired as the manager of UVA Community Credit Union, allowing the Culpeper native to stay in the same building she has worked at since she was 16 years old – a span now reaching 36 years.

“I wanted to stay in my community and continue to serve the members I have always helped,” said Bowles, who started as a teller at another local bank while attending Culpeper High School and went on to work for four other banks in the same location.

Not only did Bowles get to stay, but she was able to retain her previous staff. As the branch manager of UVA Community Credit Union, Bowles oversees six employees and shares office space with its mortgage and lending partners. Now the face of a local

credit union, Bowles has more flexibility to actively engage in the community than with her previous employer.

“We volunteer on the board of the Culpeper Renaissance, and we sponsor a lot of the events in Culpeper,” Bowles said.

Bowles credits former bank employees Portia Jenkins and Steve Southard as mentors in the banking industry and feels blessed that she’s still able to work with the Culpeper community she’s gotten to know over the last three and a half decades.

“My passion is to help families,” Bowles said. “I actually have a few families that have followed me for over 30 years, [from] husband and wife to their children buying their first car and home, and now their grandchildren. That is one reason I have stayed in my role for so long and not moved out of the branch to a different position so I can be here helping families in Culpeper.”

Botanical Dwellings & Fulton Found

Tabatha & Eric Fulton

Botanical Dwellings and Fulton Found, now both on East Davis Street, have settled into a rhythm that feels intentional and centered on community. Owned by Tabatha and Eric Fulton, each shop serves a different purpose, but they share a foundation built on thoughtful service, genuine relationships, and a team that pays close attention to the experience people have when they step inside.

At Botanical Dwellings, artistry and plant knowledge come together naturally. Customers come for home goods, plants, and gifts, but they also find inspiration. They linger because the displays change with the seasons and spark new ideas. The color pairings and creative installations invite people to explore, and the team engages easily with customers, answering questions about plant care and how accessories might work together in their home. The environment feels easy to move through, and people tend to explore at their own pace. Many visitors describe the shop as a source of ideas as much as a place to purchase something new.

Fulton Found, located a block away, offers a distinct but complementary atmosphere. The shop focuses on masculine lifestyle, featuring apparel, gear, and useful pieces chosen with clarity and purpose. The vibe is easy and unfussy, and the choices are curated enough that customers can trust the quality without feeling overwhelmed. What once belonged to the more moto driven side of the shop now lives downstairs in Fulton Moto, a collaborative project between Eric Fulton and Dos Allen. The basement space gives moto culture its own home, allowing Fulton Found to remain centered on its lifestyle perspective.

What ties Botanical Dwellings and Fulton Found together is a familiar feeling that customers notice even if they don’t know the shops are connected. It shows up in the way the spaces are arranged, the natural flow of conversation, and the comfort people feel when they come through the door. The spaces intentionally do not mirror one another but both feel open, welcoming, and sincere.

The team plays a meaningful part in that consistency. Among the team, MacKenzie and Carlos are two of the steady presences who help carry that sense of familiarity across both shops. Whether someone is selecting a gift or asking about a plant they purchased earlier in the season, the interaction feels personal and memorable. These moments create a sense of connection that keeps people returning.

Looking ahead, the focus is on refining what already resonates. Botanical Dwellings will continue offering home goods, plants, and inspiration driven displays that customers look forward to. Fulton Found will keep shaping its lifestyle assortment with the same thoughtful approach that defines the shop. Fulton Moto will continue to evolve naturally, building on the interest and energy that began upstairs.

Together, the shops reflect a long term commitment to Culpeper. They aim to create spaces that feel inviting, connected, and meaningful to the people who walk through them every day.

TREE SERVICE & LANDSCAPING

Kenny Jenkins Tree Service & Landscaping LLC

Kenny Jenkins may be 63 years old, but that doesn’t mean the Rapidan resident wants to slow down in life.

Every morning at 5:30 a.m., he joins his crew at Kenny Jenkins Tree Service & Landscaping LLC to do whatever needs to be accomplished that day. He and wife Annie lead an experienced staff that provide everything from tree trimming to landscaping to emergency tree limb removal, traveling as far as Richmond and Maryland for jobs.

“I even tried to tell him to just meet with the customers and schedule jobs…but he still has to be there,” said Annie.

As long as Annie has known Kenny, he has been an incredibly hard worker. He started in the tree removal business at age 16 in 1979, got married at 18 and has never looked back.

“He was very determined,” Annie said. “He went to school every day and never brought home a book because he always finished his work at school. During the evening, … if he wasn’t setting up

schedule to work the weekends, he was out in the field, busting wood, getting ready for wood deliveries.”

Son-in-law Michael Leavell knows just how hard Kenny has worked to get where he’s at. Leavell works for the company and lives with his wife and three children in Kenny’s restored childhood home, originally just a three-room house with no running water that supported eight kids.

“I have learned a lot from Kenny,” Leavell said. “When it comes to running a business, education on trees and work ethic, there is no comparison.”

When Kenny is not working his “day job,” he is tending to cattle on his property or tinkering in his shop.

“I am very proud of Kenny’s accomplishments,” Annie said. “We both came up with a minimal amount of stuff. Kenny just decided to do better for himself and his kids, and he set forth to do it, and he did it.”

Crossroads Realty Advisors – Long & Foster Real Estate Kelly &

Bomb squad. That’s how Philip Thornton describes what it’s like to be a real estate agent these days. “I think you have to be adept at handling large amounts of pressure, working within tight time windows, and there’s zero room for failure,” he said.

With regulatory changes occurring on the national, state, and local level, it’s more important than ever to have experienced agents like Philip and Kelly Thornton of Crossroads Realty Advisors. The married duo offers buyer/seller representation for the purchase/ sale of residential properties, farms, raw land, commercial, estates, and investment properties. Additionally, they provide property management services through their sister company, Paragon Property Management.

“One of the things I like about being in real estate is that it’s never stagnant. Things are ever shifting, evolving, growing,” Kelly said. “So, we’re doing what we always do - adjusting the sails accordingly, educating clients on what it all means and helping them through the changes.”

“There’s 753 wires and you need to know which ones to cut and when,” Philip quipped.

While knowing when to cut the blue or red wires is vital in real

estate transactions, equally important is helping people make educated decisions about one of life’s biggest events — buying or selling a home.

“Sometimes we’re the bomb squad, being called in to problem solve and determine effective solutions; Sometimes we are the quiet to the storm,” Kelly said. “Clients come to us with many emotions in tow and it’s important to ‘meet them where they are’ and acknowledge and respect while educating and supporting.”

Defusing potential bombs like unforeseen septic system failures or permit issues is a team effort, and Philip and Kelly have worked hard over their combined four decades of experience to build relationships with numerous local businesses.

“Having a solid list of resources is crucial - Local inspectors, settlement agents, etc.” Kelly said. “When client needs arise, we want to offer recommendations for people who have the same standards we do when it comes to client services. And we want community connections to be able to rely on us when they have needs.”

LAW FIRM

Gayheart & Willis P.C.

“People often come to our office seeking counsel and advice during some of their worst times,” said Megan Coppage, office manager at Gayheart & Willis P.C. By “providing a warm, caring and aesthetically pleasing environment for all those who come to the office and making sure that the office, with its many moving parts/people runs like a well-oiled machine… We hope that people feel heard, appreciated, understood and that we bring some sense of calm and comfort to them in their times of need.”

The attention to detail and warm atmosphere provided at Gayheart & Willis hasn’t gone unnoticed: The firm has received the “Best of the Best of Culpeper” award for the last two years.

The foundation for success was laid back in 1991 when Andy Gayheart, who hoped to make his own mark in this area of the legal field, established his own practice. In 2001, Gayheart invited Jere Willis to join the practice — thus Gayheart & Willis was born. The partnership has overseen consistent growth. Currently, the firm employs three attorneys — and is seeking a fourth — as well as eight paralegals/support staff members.

“Each attorney comes with a breadth of experience, both in life and in the legal field,” Coppage said. “Our attorneys have varied personal and legal interests allowing them to diversify and meet each client’s particular need with compassion and expertise.”

Having served generations of Culpeper residents, Coppage said it is important for the firm to give back to the community.

The attorneys and staff at Gayheart & Willis have given back in the form of free estate planning advice for senior groups, supporting the police department’s Santa program and the Culpeper Department of Social Services, and partnering with local sports teams.

While their profession and commitment to the community is serious, the firm’s staff like to let loose from time to time.

“We have a very cohesive group, and Fridays can often erupt in a dance party or conga line,” Coppage said, adding that the talent doesn’t stop at the feet; Staff members can regularly be heard speaking fluent Arabic, French, Portuguese and Spanish!

DAY SCHOOL

Wakefield Country Day School John Elmore

Over a half-century ago, Wakefield Country Day School opened its doors and has since maintained the remarkable distinction of ensuring that every single graduate earns acceptance to a strong four-year university.

Nestled in Rappahannock County, where the cows outnumber the residents by a wide margin, this Preschool-through-12th-grade institution was founded on the idea that education should nurture both intellect and character. With 200 students from five surrounding counties and a student-teacher ratio of 8 to 1, students receive individualized attention that shows in their outstanding academic record and readiness for college and beyond.

In addition to the rigorous academic curriculum expected of a prep school, students study several languages, including Latin, with English, German, and Spanish beginning in Preschool. Every student is guaranteed to travel abroad during middle and upper school.

“Travel is Education” is a principle evident in the many field trips WCDS students take throughout their tenure. Highlights include the annual Journalism Class trip to New York City, the 10-day trip through Great Britain aligned with the middle school British History courses, and the “Walking in the Footsteps of Caesar” journey through Italy, which reinforces lessons from Pre-Renaissance History, Latin, and Art History.

The School also offers a variety of extracurricular activities, including Bitcoin Club, Wildlife Conservation Club, Leo Club, and championshipwinning middle and varsity sports teams. Favorites among alumni include annual traditions such as Field Day, the Medieval Banquet, Bonfire Night, the Winter Physics/Ski Seminar, and the Christmas Tree Lighting.

Beyond its many offerings, the school’s sense of community is what struck John Elmore most when he took over as principal two years ago. A native of Montana who has led college-prep schools across the country, Elmore is impressed by how connected the student body is and by the strength of the alumni network.

“There is something unique about having 3-year-olds and 12th graders on the same campus,” Elmore said. “The little ones look up to everybody else and, frankly, the big kids step up. They know there are little eyes watching, and that sense of community is pretty special.”

Wakefield offers both financial aid and academic scholarships and takes juniors and seniors on multiple college visits across Virginia each year. Its dedicated college counselor works closely with students to uphold the school’s 50-plus-year streak of 100-percent four-year college acceptance. The senior class earns an average of $1.5 million in college merit scholarships annually.

“We walk them through every step of the college application process: the courses they choose, recommendation letters, everything. It’s the kind of attentive support you can only get with small class sizes,” Elmore said.

And the relationship doesn’t end when students matriculate. Wakefield alumni tend to stay in touch with the school. At a reunion held in Arlington last fall, alumni from the classes of 1994 through 2020 gathered to reminisce.

“Everyone was telling the same stories,” Elmore said, “We are small, and we are mighty!”

ANTIQUE STORE

Country Shoppes of Culpeper Lois Alperstein

The Blue Ridge mountains looming beyond the town of Culpeper are still a captivating sight for longtime Country Shoppes of Culpeper owner Lois Alperstein.

But 40 years ago, the New Jersey native and D.C. transplant likely wouldn’t have been able to find the mountains or the bucolic small Virginia town on a map. In the late 1980s, Alperstein was winding down her career in the financial sector in Washington, D.C. when her husband was approached by an agent about a commercial property for sale on the west side of Culpeper. They knew next to nothing about the area; however, as real estate investors, they did their due diligence and purchased the property.

With the antiques mall celebrating its 32nd year of business this April, it is safe to say that she and her husband made a wise investment. “It’s [antiques] always been a passion of mine, but just never thought working on Wall Street that is where I would end up,” Alperstein said. Country Shoppes offer a variety of antiques from more than 125 dealers, ranging from kitchenware and furniture to paintings and old currency. The shop attracts all sorts of customers including antique

collectors and vintage dealers looking for good deals.

“We have a good mix of everything when it comes what people are looking for,” said store manager Hans Gerstl.

One of the reasons for the affordable prices is the location. Country Shoppes is 45 miles from Charlottesville and 70 miles from Washington, D.C., two locations that are far more expensive in the antique world than Culpeper.

“We have great prices,” Alperstein said. “Our dealers are really smart businesswomen and men.”

A former restaurant owner in Charlottesville and individual antique dealer himself, Gerstl has played a pivotal role in keeping the business brisk according to Alperstein. Gerstl has served as the manager for the last two years, and under his watch, expectations have risen for the individual dealers while still maintaining a close bond with them.

Gerstl said that downhome atmosphere all starts with Alperstein.

“She’s very heartfelt,” Gerstl said. “She’s very giving and does make you feel like it’s a family. I try to give that out to the dealers as well. We’re a family here.”

Kid Central Marshall Conner

“He [is] a man of strong character. His honesty, work ethic, faithfulness and commitment to not only Kid Central but the Culpeper community has been consistently displayed throughout the years,” said Dorenda Pullen, director of early childhood and adolescent programs at Culpeper Human Services.

The “he” is Marshall Conner, a 24-year veteran of Kid Central, a fully licensed childcare center that offers before and after school programs at six elementary schools and two middle schools in addition to a preschool program held at the Galbreath Marshall building.

“I’m a loyal person. When I find something special, I stick to it—it must be my Scottish roots,” Conner said. “The intrinsic connections interwoven throughout our community makes Culpeper a wonderful place.”

The military veteran wears many hats — journalist, childcare professional, community leader running the Silver Club — but each serves the same goal: service to community members.

As the marketing and sports coordinator, Conner is in charge of creating ads, generating social media content, and working with a grant committee to provide opportunities for children and teens

to develop lifelong interests in sports and health.

“We play lots of sports and games at Kid Central,” he said. “I believe it is essential.”

Throughout his two-decade career at Kid Central, Conner and his colleagues have worked to create safe, fun, and enriching afterschool programs. The effects of this commitment can be seen years later.

“I have adults come up to me regularly and share positive memories of the program,” he said. “I see former Kid Central children out in the world doing great things daily. I really love seeing them excel as adults and feel we had a small part in that development.”

Kid Central partners with several local organizations such as PATH (Culpeper Wellness), Culpeper Parks and Recreation, Healthy Culpeper, Soap Box Derby, and others to help create an environment where children can thrive.

“I want them to feel appreciated, safe, and free to grow and learn,” Conner said. “I want them all to know just how much we care about their success. I want them to know that where we start in life should never hinder our dreams.”

Fletcher Home Matt Fletcher

Orange County native Matt Fletcher enlisted in the Marine Corps after high school and then attended Liberty University with the idea that he would be pursuing a career in sports management.

But the entrepreneurial Fletcher – who started a painting business while in school – decided that a career in the home improvement business trumped working for “peanuts” if he stuck with his original plans.

“In order to get into the sports business, you are starting from the ground up,” Fletcher said. “At the time I had a halfway decent painting business,” said Fletcher, who used to work for his father’s painting company as a teenager. “So, I was like, ‘why in the world am I going to go do this and work for nothing?’”

After college, Fletcher got married, sold his painting business and commuted from Fredericksburg to Northern Virginia for a general contractor for five years before deciding to start a business closer to home. Starting in 2013, he went door to door, eventually building Fletcher Home into a thriving indoor/outdoor home remodeling

company that currently boasts 48 employees and completed 836 projects in 2024.

With services primarily in the Fredericksburg area stretching west into Culpeper, Fletcher has recently expanded into the Richmond area and hopefully, will have a location in the Tidewater area of Virginia also.

“There is always a need for good home improvement companies,” Fletcher said.

Fletcher knows that working on someone’s home can be a huge hassle for homeowners. That is why Fletcher’s specializes in projects that take days, not weeks, After years of focusing on siding, windows, decks and roofing, Fletcher added shower and bath replacement projects. It was such a huge success that they now offer full bath remodeling jobs.

“Whenever we come to a customer’s house, whatever the job is, we want the customer to say, ‘wow that was easy,’” Fletcher said. “Not only was it an awesome experience, but it was easy. Many of our projects are done typically in a 1-to-5-day period.”

EYE CARE

Eye Care of Virginia Dr. Miles Press

Dr. Miles Press was already envisioning his plans for the future at eight years old. It was the 1950s and the bespectacled boy was visiting his eye doctor, Dr. Robert J. Morrison, in Harrisburg, Pa. During his visit, he told the optometrist he wanted to follow in his footsteps after Morrison showed him some of the ways he was helping his patients. Morrison told Press to come back when he was 16 years old. The boy did exactly that, helping the optometrist by manufacturing contacts for his patients while attending high school. Five decades later, the 77-year-old Press is still making a living helping his patients see better.

Since opening Eye Care of Virginia inside the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Culpeper, Press has seen 64,000 patients, which includes his office in King George. His journey to Culpeper has been a long one since working for Dr.Morrison. He graduated from the New England College of Optometry in 1971 and enlisted in the Air Force, working for the flight surgeon’s office at Eglin Air Force Base and also Hurlburt Field in Florida.

While in the Air Force, Press conducted a case study where he helped determine what was causing vision issues for many of the airmen who observed radar every day. Because of Press’ work, the color of the radar technology eventually changed from red to orange.“I proved that it was causing the individuals to become more near-sighted.” Press said. “I suggested an orange tint, because it gives you a better wavelength for your eyes.”

He then held private practices in Virginia Beach where he was a clinical investigator for Bausch & Lomb and other contact lens companies, and then Bristol, Va., where he managed four practices: Bristol, Big Stone Gap, Keene Mountain and Marion. In 1980 he sold all the practices and started a contact lens company and developed and patented the first soft tinted contact lens. He also went on missions to Peru, South America and helped 3,000 people see with glasses donated from the Lion’s Club.

Dr. Robert J. Morrison of Harrisburg was a well-known contact-lens pioneer and treated many royals. Multiple reputable sources say Queen Juliana of the Netherlands gave him a Rolls-Royce after he fitted one of her daughters with corrective contact lenses in the mid1960s (reports cite a visit/fitting around 1967). Morrison is described as the “eye doctor to the rich and famous” and as having received the Rolls-Royce from Queen Juliana in gratitude. Press has had many interesting experiences over the years, including the time he spent with Morrison.

Press tells patients when they ask when he will retire, “I am trying to help people just like you. Every day I go there I help people solve problems, give them better vision and use my expertise for specialty difficult to fit contacts lens patients.”

In his 54th year as an Optometrist, “Our motto at Eye Care of Virginia is ‘We strive for excellence in Eye Care.’”

Shawn’s Craft Barbecue Tiffani Williams

When you step into Shawn’s Craft Barbecue, you’re meant to feel like family. That’s the vibe that Tiffani Jeffries Williams and her team members have created at the Culpeper restaurant, where the positive atmosphere is complemented by St. Louis-style ribs and Magda’s Cheesecakes.

“What people really love is…when they come and get our banana pudding or brisket or ribs, that they’re going to taste the same as they did the last time,” Williams said. “They know that they can rely on the flavors that they love the first time, the second, the third and so on.”

Williams has a background in healthcare administration and worked for a time with the UVA Health system in Culpeper. She pivoted to nonprofit work but found the idea of a food business continually on her mind. Additionally, her husband’s degree in chemistry would come in handy for refining the tastes of items on the menu.

“I love putting together different flavors [and] using local ingredients,” she said. “I’m definitely a foodie.”

Shawn’s Craft Barbecue specializes in slow-cooked meats that are heated over hickory wood. The love and care that Williams says is so important to the business may well be why Shawn’s earned “best brisket” honors in the 2025 Hop N Hog Barbecue Competition.

“We smoke our chickens on the bone, then we allow them to cool, pull them, sauce the meat, and that’s what you’re being served versus just smoking a chicken breast,” Williams said. “Our ribs are cooked very tenderly, allowed to rest and then served with our coleslaw. We use coconut to help sweeten it naturally, [which is a] surprise that people really enjoy and makes you want to keep coming back.”

Among the positive feedback Shawn’s has received is particular praise for Williams herself. Customers are consistently charmed by her ability to learn a number of people’s names and strike up an easy conversation.

Williams and her partner in the operation, Magda Moss, are longtime Culpeper residents. Together they sponsor the Eastern View High School athletics and other local high school athletics and the Culpeper Cavaliers.

Building community is as important as the deliciousness factor, Williams believes. She relies on customer feedback to adjust Shawn’s menu, sometimes even implementing new items that come up as frequent requests.

“We’re here for the community, and we wouldn’t be able to exist without the community, so that relationship is really important,” she said.

CARPETS & FLOORING

Early’s Carpet, Inc

In the early 1960s, John Early was working as a carpet contractor in Northern Virginia when he decided that the long commute from his hometown of Amissville was no longer worth it. Together with his wife, Lorraine, John founded Early’s Carpet in 1966, operating the new business from their home.

Just a few years later, in 1968, the showroom was built next door and by 1971 the couple expanded by constructing a warehouse attached to it, giving Early’s Carpet 11,400 square feet of combined showroom and inventory space.

Nearly six decades later, Early’s Carpet remains a family-owned and operated business, now under the leadership of their daughter, Sonja Early Betts. Since Sonja and her husband, Solon Betts, took over management 18 years ago, the company has more than doubled its staff to 30 employees and expanded its footprint to 21,000 square feet.

While flooring and carpeting remain the foundation of the business, Early’s has grown to include window treatments, upholstery, duct cleaning services and water restoration. The company was also recently recognized as a Hunter Douglas Gallery Dealer, a

distinction that highlights its excellence and expertise within the window treatment industry.

Sonja’s days begin early—often at 4:00 a.m.—as she checks emails and prepares orders for her crews. But for her, the most rewarding part of the job is helping customers make their houses feel more like home.

“Customer service has always been at the heart of what we do,” Sonja shared. “With nearly 60 years of experience, our team’s collective knowledge is invaluable. I always tell our employees that if they don’t know the answer, there’s someone here who does. We’ve likely seen it, done it, or solved it before.”

Sonja’s connection to the business began when she was just 16, running errands for the staff. Today, the next generation is continuing the family legacy—her youngest son, Dustin Betts, now works alongside her, while her mother, Lorraine, still stops by the showroom several times a week to check in on the company she and John built together.

“Her goal is to make it to 60,” Sonja said proudly. “She wants to celebrate our 60th anniversary.”

EARLY EDUCATION

Three years ago, Rhian Allvin founded Brynmor Early Education and Preschool to address critical gaps in childcare. Throughout her career in Early Childhood Education, she saw too few children had access to high-quality programs, while educators continued to earn poverty-level wages without healthcare or retirement benefits. Brynmor was created to confront these challenges, offering a model that prioritizes both children’s learning and educators’ well-being.

Brynmor Early Education & Preschool now operates three locations, with its newest center at Culpeper Baptist Church. For 76 years, the church has provided childcare to the community. To ensure families continue to receive dependable care, the church sought a partner with the scale, expertise, and commitment to deliver highquality early childhood education. They found that Brynmor not only met these needs but exceeded them. Brynmor at Culpeper Baptist can enroll up to 230 children. They provide year-round, full-day care for children ages six weeks to five years and offers

before- and after-school programs as well as summer camps for school-age children.

Brynmor at Culpeper Baptist is proud to provide high-quality childcare tailored to the needs of today’s full-time workforce.

Founder Rhian Allvin believes that true quality goes beyond supervision—it requires a commitment to educating children during their first five years, when cognitive, motor, and language development are most critical. At Brynmor, childcare is not simply babysitting; it is the foundation for lifelong learning. This philosophy is reflected in a carefully designed curriculum that distinguishes Brynmor at Culpeper Baptist from other childcare centers.

Brynmor at Culpeper Baptist welcomes children of all ages to enroll. Its mission is to provide high-quality childcare enriched with early education, giving every child the chance to build a strong foundation. With this support, children enter kindergarten prepared for success and a future filled with promise.

Uncle Elder’s BBQ Elder Fuentes

Just off Main Street lies a building that has welcomed weary travelers near and far for more than a century. Once a respite for horses tired after traveling long distances, The Stable continues to provide comfort for local and distant travelers, not in the form of tack, but in homemade Texas style BBQ, friendly service, and a cozy atmosphere.

For Elder Fuentes, owner of Uncle Elder’s BBQ, every detail is focused on the customer.

“Everything is about the people. I work for them,” he said. “I love seeing their smiling faces. It makes the long hours worth it.”

Fuentes spends upwards of 18 hours a day at the family restaurant preparing hickory smoked briskets, ribs, pulled pork, chicken, and a variety of homemade sides. Offering something for everyone, the establishment also has seafood, burgers, salads, soups, and “appeteasers” among other options.

“Everything is cooked with love and time,” he said. “We don’t rush anything — I think that’s what makes us different.”

The success of the restaurant since its opening in 2014 can be seen in the accolades — it has been named best BBQ and best caterer in Culpeper for 11 years straight — and in the variety of license plates from surrounding states parked outside.

“The food speaks for itself, but we also rely on word-of-mouth recommendations,” Fuentes said. “Seeing people come from miles away — Maryland, D.C., Alexandria — to try our brisket makes me feel great and grateful.”

Uncle Elder’s BBQ offers dine-in, carry out, and catering. Fuentes said he regularly caters for weddings, family reunions, birthdays, and community events.

A 20-year veteran of the BBQ business, Fuentes said one thing has remained the same: his commitment to his customers.

“The town and the people are wonderful. They have shown me excellent support, and I can’t thank them enough,” he said with a confident smile on his face.

CLEANING SERVICE

Merry Maids Will Johnson

Merry Maids has been helping clients inhabit cleaner spaces since 1988. Merry Maids sends teams out to homes and small businesses in and around Culpeper and Warrenton providing services from a regular clean to prepping a home for a sales staging. Merry Maids offers weekly, biweekly, monthly or onetime cleaning services.

“Our customers can [utilize] a new feature through our e-commerce site of putting their order in and being able to get a price immediately,” Johnson said. “Our pricing is calculated by utilizing the square footage, the number of rooms and the condition.”

Johnson, who bought out his Merry Maids partner a few years back, says that Culpeper and Warrenton collectively are thriving as a community of entrepreneurs. The good news for business growth, he believes, will only continue. As a resident, however, he views this with some trepidation.

“We want to grow, but we don’t want to grow fast,” he said of expansion in Culpeper and Warrenton. “That definitely adds to our opportunities in the marketplace, however, I think both communities have been able to slow growth to the point that it’s a little bit more manageable.”

Merry Maids participates in a Dallas-based program called Cleaning for a Reason, which provides free home cleaning for cancer patients in the United States and Canada. Johnson and his team provide two cleanings four weeks apart for those in need.

“A lot of those customers are very appreciative of giving them some time back or doing chores that they physically are not able to do at the moment,” Johnson said. “Merry Maids donates our labor and our time. Our technicians get paid for the job by us. This way the customer has no cost to them.

“We’ve all been touched by cancer in some fashion, so we feel that’s the best way to help the community.”

Johnson is also proud of the many five-star reviews left by Merry Maids customers. Even if a customer is less than pleased initially, they will work quickly on a solution.

“Your satisfaction is what we want,” Johnson said. “Our reputation is everything, so we just want to make sure everybody’s satisfied—even when they’re not.”

Rappahannock Electric Cooperative Jeff Powell & Travis See

No two days are the same for Rappahannock Electric Cooperative’s Jeff Powell and Travis See — and that’s exactly how they like it.

“One day I might meet with a member who works to ensure our nation’s safety and security, and the next day I am working with a data center, a large manufacturer, or even an amusement park,” said Powell, who serves as a key accounts executive for the eastern region. “We also work very closely with each of our school divisions … I’m really proud of the work we have done with Culpeper County Public Schools to help implement solar and EV charging stations.”

“Getting to meet and speak directly with the key account members in my new role has allowed me to form closer relationships with different businesses in the communities we serve,” added See, who recently moved into the role as a key accounts executive for the western region.

Powell and See help REC members understand their electric bills,

offer ways to lower energy usage, and provide planning assistance for clean energy, renewable or backup power projects.

“We like to be the single point of contact for all their needs, whether it be for outages, billing questions, expansions, energy efficiency, renewables, or their goals for the next five years,” Powell added.

Approximately 10% of REC’s 1,200 commercial and industrial accounts are designated as key accounts based on their load size and/or the vital services they provide to the communities served by the cooperative.

Both leaders take a personal approach to handling key accounts, which aligns with REC’s member-centered values as a cooperative.

“I have enjoyed meeting some of our key account members in person,” See said. “Putting a face to the name has helped me develop more of a relationship.”

COMMUNITY

Culpeper Young Professionals Culpeper Chamber of Commerce

The young people of Culpeper are making waves in the business world, social networking scenes, and creating a better community one project and event at a time.

A program of the Culpeper Chamber of Commerce, the Culpeper Young Professionals (YP) is designed for entrepreneurs and early-career employees between the ages of 18 and 40 to build relationships, develop professionally, and give back to the community through engaging activities and service opportunities.

“Each year, the group’s Advisory Council selects a local non-profit or community project to support through fundraising and volunteerism,” said Amy Frazier, president and CEO of the chamber. “In 2025, the Young Professionals donated $9,347 to the Culpeper County Volunteer Fire & Rescue Association (CCVFRA), which coordinates emergency services and training for Culpeper’s eight fire and rescue companies.”

While philanthropy is at the heart of the group’s mission, members say the culture of support, connection, and growth is what makes YP truly special.

Tyler Martin, founder of Strong Arm Media, has been a member for four years. “Everybody in the Young Professionals is fantastic… I love everybody like family,” he said. “It’s a good time and we’re always doing what we can to help out.” Martin has used his creative talents to support the group’s annual fundraising car wash, producing promotional videos and helping boost awareness.

As a young business owner, he says the networking has been crucial. “Culpeper is just a whole different vibe, especially in the business world,” Martin said. “Everybody knows everybody. Building that network with people in general is beyond valuable.”

Incoming 2026 Chair Megan King shared that joining YP helped her plant roots in her new hometown. “I joined the Young Professionals when I moved to Culpeper as a way to meet people and get connected to the community,” King said. “I have been consistently impressed by how the Culpeper community comes together to support each other when things are hard and celebrate each person’s wins.”

Winona Pritts, the 2025 Chair, says the group continues to grow because it genuinely reflects Culpeper’s collaborative spirit. “This group is filled with people who want to learn, want to lead, and want to serve,” Pritts said. “Young Professionals gives us a space to build real friendships while also building a stronger Culpeper. It’s inspiring to watch members support each other—professionally and personally.”

Past Chair Stephen King agrees, adding that the experience shaped him as a leader. “Serving as chair showed me how much impact young people can have when we work together,” King said. “YP gives us confidence, direction, and a network of peers who push us to grow. It’s one of the best things a young professional can be part of in Culpeper.”

“Overall, the Culpeper Young Professionals group builds community leadership, professional growth, and civic engagement among the next generation of local leaders,” Frazier said.
