Urban Air Adventure Park:

The Ultimate Fall Destination for Families

As autumn settles across Prince William County, families are searching for ways to enjoy the season together. The air is crisp, the leaves are vivid and weekends seem to call for new traditions that bring parents and children closer.

For many families, Urban Air Adventure Parks in Gainesville and Woodbridge are becoming just that kind of tradition – a place where adventure, laughter and connection come alive under one roof.

Urban Air is more than a play space for children. It is an environment where families of all ages can experience excitement side by side. Parents don’t just watch from the sidelines; they can join in the action, too, and at only half the cost of their child’s ticket, it’s easier than ever to make memories together.

Whether it’s a mother racing her son through the Warrior Obstacle Course or a father and daughter sharing the thrill of trampolines and zip lines, Urban Air creates moments that families will carry well beyond fall.

Inside the parks, every corner is designed to spark joy and confidence. Children scale climbing

a pit stop – it’s a place where laughter continues, stories are told and the day feels complete. The café adds an extra layer of comfort that makes Urban Air not just exciting, but welcoming, especially during the cozy fall season.

What makes Urban Air so special this fall is not only the variety of attractions but the way it strengthens bonds. Every accomplishment on the obstacle course, every cheer from the sidelines and every laugh over a shared snack contributes to the bigger picture of family memories. In a season that already encourages gathering, Urban Air adds a unique dimension: gathering through play and building confidence while having fun together.

walls, balance carefully on the ropes course and zip across the Sky Rider while discovering their own courage and resilience. Younger children have their own special areas where they can explore at their own pace, ensuring no family member is left out of the fun.

Even on rainy or chilly days, the energy inside Urban Air makes it feel like the season’s most vibrant playground, safe from the weather but still full of the spirit of adventure.

Of course, all that activity works up an appetite, and that’s when Urban Air’s café becomes part of the adventure. Families can pause and recharge with menu items designed to satisfy everyone – from classics like pizza and wings to sweet favorites such as ice cream, churros, and cotton candy. Kids love the colorful ICEEs, while parents appreciate that there are some grown-up drinks for them to enjoy as well, making it easy to stretch a quick visit into a full afternoon together.

Sharing a snack after conquering the climbing wall or celebrating a new personal best on the obstacle course turns the café into more than just

That sense of celebration goes even further with Urban Air’s party and event options. From birthday parties that kids remember for years to private events and group outings, the parks make hosting simple and stress-free. Dedicated staff take care of the details so families and organizations can focus on what matters most –enjoying the moment. Whether it’s blowing out candles after an afternoon of adventure or hosting a special gathering in a space designed for fun, Urban Air transforms occasions into experiences.

Both the Gainesville and Woodbridge locations have quickly become hubs of family life in Prince William. They are places where neighbors meet, friendships grow and the wider community thrives.

Whether it’s a spontaneous weekend outing, a birthday party that kids will never forget, or a family tradition you return to year after year, Urban Air offers the perfect mix of thrills, treats and togetherness. Parents can even join the adventure themselves – and at just half the price of a child’s ticket, the decision to leap in has never been easier.

To quote Prince William’s Commercial Development Committee – “Together, we can do it!” This fall, give your family the gift of unforgettable fun – right here in Prince William. WANT TO GO?

Explore Underground History of the Civil War at Melrose Caverns

What do bullet holes, the signature of a relative of Abraham Lincoln, Native American carvings, and the names of Union and Confederate soldiers etched into cave walls have in common?

They can all be found in Melrose Caverns, a recently reopened show cavern, wedding venue and event center just outside of Harrisonburg. Smaller than most other caverns in the Shenandoah Valley, its size makes it feel more approachable.

Melrose Caverns lies underneath the Harrison homestead, a parcel of land that traces back to a 1748 land grant awarded to the Harrison family from King George II. The caverns opened to visitors in the 1920s but ceased operations in 1967 due to lack of business after the completion of Interstate 81. Later restored, the caverns reopened to visitors in late 2021.

The Geology of Melrose Caverns

Melrose Caverns are a natural limestone cave system that formed over millions of years. Like most caverns it has its share of stalagmites, stalactites and other geological formations. As you walk through the caverns you will also come across an organ that can be played by hitting the “pipes” with a rock and a beautiful underground lake illuminated by colored lights.

As you continue down the winding paths you will start to see thin, feathery vines draping from the ceiling. That’s because in those areas the cavern ceilings are close enough to the surface of the ground for tree roots to make their way in through cracks in the rocks.

Native American History

During your tour, your guide will point out two Native American carvings of faces, along with an alcove where Native American artifacts and human remains were discovered. It is believed that the first Native Americans discovered the caverns around 300 AD.

Civil War Signatures

Although the rock formations in Melrose Caverns are interesting and impressive, what makes this cavern unique is the history behind it. The caves were occupied at various times by both Union and Confederate soldiers during the Civil War and, as mankind has done since the beginning of time, they left behind graffiti – their names carved in the cave walls with their bayonets, stamped or written in ash from their fires.

An estimated 400 names are written throughout the cavern, the majority of which are from 1862. In April of that year, Union soldiers under the command of Gen. Nathaniel Bank were looking for a place to rest and store ammunition on the way to Gettysburg, Pa.

We can imagine they discovered a hole in the ground with cool air rising from it and decided to investigate. They found a vast underground cave system in which to store their supplies as well as get some sleep.

There is also evidence that they might have become bored at times. One stalactite column bears pockmarks – researchers suspect the soldiers used it for target practice.

Soldiers weren’t the only ones to leave their signatures on the walls. In 1829, a relative of Abraham Lincoln who lived nearby left his name in the cave as well. Interestingly, he later joined the Confederate Army to fight against the Union forces headed by his own cousin.

"An estimated 400 names are written throughout the cavern, the majority of which are from 1862."

Unfortunately, Native Americans and Civil War soldiers were not the only ones to leave evidence of their visits to the caves. Your tour guides will be quick to point out that some of the names (mostly written in red) are the result of more recent visits by college students from area universities from the 1960s and 1970s.

The caverns had closed, but the buildings on the property were used by the University of Virginia for various events.

Take an Easy Hike at Shenandoah River Campus at Cool Spring Battlefield

Over the past few years, as our favorite hiking places around Northern Virginia and Shenandoah National Park have become more popular, my family has sought out new places to hike and enjoy nature in solitude.

We found one in the Shenandoah River Campus at Cool Spring Battlefield near Bluemont in Clarke County. It’s turned into one of our favorite places to go when we need to get away for a few hours and reconnect with nature.

Paved Hiking Loops at Cool Springs Battlefield

Fun fact – the nearly 200 acres that now comprise Shenandoah River Campus at Cool Spring Battlefield was once home to the Virginia National Golf Club. It’s now part of Shenandoah University, which preserves the natural and historical aspects of the site.

The paved golf cart paths serve as walking trails, making the campus family-friendly, as well as a great place to run and hike.

There are two hiking loops to choose from. The Southern Loop is a relatively flat walk that runs along the Shenandoah River and is great for a quiet walk and birding. The more popular Northern Loop contains self-guided walking trails, a gorgeous Shenandoah Valley overlook and a waterfall. Both loops begin at the information kiosk.

Start the Northern Loop on the path to the left, which will lead you between the river and the open meadow. This part of the hike is a relatively easy but enjoyable walk with wildflowers and the occasional bird sighting. Once in a while, you will hear bells tolling from the nearby Holy Cross Abbey in Berryville. Keep a lookout for clearings in the trees that have short paths that lead down to the river.

After about a mile, you can continue on to reach the waterfall, or turn right to get to Shenandoah Valley overlook’s views. Be warned, it is very steep going up and coming back down. Walk back down to the river and follow the sign for the Ridge to River Trail. The unpaved path will lead you to a pretty waterfall in the Rolling Ridge Conservancy. Miles of hiking trails are located within this 1,500acre wilderness preserve just north of Cool Spring Battlefield.

Cool Spring Self-Guided Nature Walk Guide

The self-guided nature trail (laminated guides are available at the information kiosk) is geared toward children and features nine stops. These stops include a riverside view, a rocky slope, bat roosting boxes, a pond and a heron rookery. The rookery is one of the highlights of Cool Spring. Each summer, more than two dozen great heron families

raise their young in a rookery of nests at the top of a cluster of trees along the river.

Cool Spring Self-Guided Civil War Trail Guides

On July 18, 1864, the Battle of Cool Spring, involving 13,000 Union and Confederate troops, took place along the Shenandoah River in Clarke County. Three interpretive signs along the walking paths explain the battle, but you can find more detailed information online.

For more history about Cool Spring Battle and to download a self-guided tour and audio tour app, visit the Shenandoah University’s website (su.edu/mcwi/ touring-the-battle-of-cool-spring/).

Bluebells at Cool Spring Battlefield

Cool Spring Battlefield is also a fantastic place to see the Virginia bluebells each spring without all the visitors that flock to the more popular hiking trails in Northern Virginia. In this case, the Southern Loop is the better trail to walk along and photograph them.
