Sports Briefs ARLINGTON LITTLE LEAGUE HOLDS OPENING DAY:
Some 1,500 were on hand for Arlington Little League’s 30th opening-day baseball ceremonies April 3 at Barcroft Park. The mascots of the Washington Nationals (“Screech”) and the Baltimore Orioles (“The Oriole Bird”) were on hand as special guests. There was a parade of teams from one field to the next and first pitches were thrown out. Then games were played. There were remarks by league president Adam Balutis. Arlington Little League was founded in 1986 by Scott Ginsberg, a volunteer youth baseball coach. Balutis noted that several of the other founding coaches are still coaching in the league. “People stick around. The older kids come back to umpire, they go off to college and return to coach, they start a family and register their kids. We’re just a big family,” Balutis said. The league raffled a basket of items that were donated by the Nationals and raised more than $500 for their Christopher M. Cooper Memorial Scholarship, dedicated to the memory of a long-time coach who passed away in 2014.
