“WELCOME TO CHICAGO”

SALES SENIOR ACCOUNT EXECUTIVE Becky Mormann

WELCOME TO AMERICA’S BEST BIG CITY Winter is here and we are more than thrilled that you are joining us in the BEST BIG CITY in the US. If you didn’t know it yet: Chicago was voted best big city for the fifth year in a row by the readers of Condé Nast Traveler Magazine. And I totally understand why: Chicago is by far my favorite city in the world. I feel blessed to be able to call it my home since I moved here from Belgium in 2014. When I first arrived, the cold winters scared me, but throughout the years I have learned to embrace every season. This edition of Concierge Preferred Magazine is full of magical things to do and places to explore during the winter months. Why not go ice skating at Maggie Daley Park or one of the other ice skating rinks and warm up over a hot drink or by a cozy fireplace? We listed some of Chicago’s concierges’ favorites in this magazine. Chicago is considered the culinary capital of the US, so make sure to check out our many dining tips, including some of the most unique outdoor dining experiences, the best luxurious food spots and -my favorite part- the best chocolates. After dinner, there’s always something to do: attend one of the many shows Chicago has to offer, the legendary Blue Man Group maybe? Spend a festive evening at Navy Pier? Or have a great night out at Lips, the ultimate drag dining experience: so much fun! If you are here to celebrate the holidays, we’ve got you covered! For the ultimate New Year’s Eve celebration, check out our party tips. We know that finding the perfect gift during the season of giving can be a challenge, but we have the solution: we listed the coolest and most unique neighborhood gift shops where you’re guaranteed to find an ideal present for your loved ones. For those of you looking for some great deals: definitely check out the Fashion Outlets in Rosemont. Downtown, right on the Magnificent Mile, you can shop your heart out at the Shops at Northbridge. Have a wonderful time in Chicago and may 2022 bring you good health, much love and prosperity! Leentje De Leeuw Editor in Chief leentje@ateema.com

EXPLORE HYDE PARK By Leentje De Leeuw

Everybody knows Hyde Park is home to the renowned University of Chicago and the Obama family home, but there is much more to discover!

DO MUSEUM OF SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY (MSI)

Whether you want to check out a U-505 WW2 German submarine, explore the interior of a 1960’s United Airlines’ Boeing 727, or learn everything there is to know about hurricanes, the MSI makes it possible with enough temporary and permanent exhibits to keep you busy all day long.

ROBIE HOUSE

Robie House is one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s most celebrated structures, an icon of modern design. Just be sure to book your tour tickets in advance and note that it’s closed to the public on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

ROCKEFELLER CHAPEL

When Rockefeller, co-founder of the University of Chicago, had this Gothic Revival chapel built, it was intended to be the ‘central and dominant feature’ of the campus. With its height and seating for 1700 people, you could say that mission was accomplished. The 72-bell carillon is the second-largest in the world — a separate gift from Rockefeller to honor his mother.

ORIENTAL INSTITUTE

A hidden gem on the University of Chicago campus, the Oriental Institute was founded in 1919 and has been a leading research center for the study of ancient civilizations ever since. The different galleries devoted to Egypt, Nubia, Persia, Mesopotamia, Syria, Anatolia, and the Levant contain over 350,000 artifacts.

DUSABLE MUSEUM

Medici on 57th has been a Hyde Park staple for almost six decades. When Hans Morbasch bought the Medici Gallery and Coffeehouse in 1962, only art and coffee were sold there. Over the years, burgers and pizzas have been added to the mix making for a very eclectic menu — one that includes President Obama’s favorite, the Garbage Pizza or Burger.

VALOIS

Founded by French Canadian William Valois in 1921, this cafeteriastyle restaurant is one of the oldest in the United States. At the counter, you can choose from the many freshly made breakfast or lunch items, including some of Barack Obama’s favorite dishes. As an old-school restaurant though, having been in the same family since 1971, just make sure to bring cash.

PLEIN AIR CAFE

Plein Air is a French expression, meaning ‘in the open air,’ which describes the act of outdoor painting. Plein Air is a French atelier-inspired café and eatery, providing a warm, serene atmosphere, where guests can enjoy good coffee, food, and design. The menu showcases simple, comforting dishes.

GOREE CUISINE

Gorrée offers amazing Senegalese food. Our recommendations include the maffe (a traditional stew), made with lamb, peanut butter, and yucca; the grilled red snapper; and the dibi chicken. The portions are very generous at Gorrée, so make sure you’re ready to share with friends or family.

THE PROMONTORY

This unique entertainment venue and event space honors the musical legacy and community spirit of Hyde Park. The Promontory is dedicated to celebrating the eras when spacious ballrooms and jumping jazz clubs made Chicago’s South Side the music capital of America!

VIRTUE

This upscale Southern restaurant is a date night favorite with its bright and airy dining room and separate, dimly lit bar area. Whether you’re just here to grab a cocktail or are ready to eat your heart out, you can’t go wrong with anything off their menu!

SHOP WESLEY’S SHOES

With over 50 years of experience, Wesley’s Shoes is the oldest independent black-owned shoe retailer in the country. They’ve won numerous awards and always rank high on retail lists. So step inside, have your feet measured, and find your perfect pair!

SILVER ROOM

The Silver Room was founded in 1997 by Erik Williams and is considered an intersection of art, community, and culture. With original items, artifacts, and other cool stuff to peruse, this is the perfect spot to score a unique gift.

57TH STREET BOOKS

Warning: once you enter this bookstore and start browsing, you may be tempted to spend the rest of the day here. Friendly and helpful employees will only contribute to that. Check out their website for events and book launches.

The DuSable Museum collection includes more than 15,000 paintings, sculptures, print works, and historical memorabilia. Main attractions include ‘The March’, an exhibit from TIME and executive producer Viola Davis that invites you to experience a recreation of one of the most iconic moments in American history, the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.

DON’T LET WINTER STOP YOU FROM EATING OUT[SIDE]

By Wenqinq Xu Don’t let winter stop you from dining outside. Chicago has many creative outdoor dining options worth exploring rain, snow, or shine. IO Godfrey - River North During the winter, IO Godfrey's year-round rooftop bar and restaurant transforms into a wonderland with igloos that can accommodate up to 6 people each. Enjoy some of their tasty shareables, flatbreads, and appetizers in the twinkle of their beautifully lit trees, floor lamps, and firepits for a magical night out.

City Winery - West Loop

Kennedy's year-round winter wonderland offers boozy igloos and curling on the rooftop. There are three bottle packages in the igloo: standard, premium, and platinum (each with its own characteristics). If you don't want to be cooped up in the igloo the whole time, you can try a bit of Kennedy curling for a great way to warm up with friends and take in a beautiful skyline view.

Le Sud - Lakeview/Roscoe Village Le Sud, the Mediterranean restaurant in Roscoe Village, has two new options for winter dining areas. The sidewalk cafe will be transformed with large windows to completely enclose the area for a cozy and heated dining space that can hold up to 40 guests. With that, the heated and enclosed rooftop patio will also be open with 30 seats. Both winter outdoor dining areas make Le Sud well worth the visit.

Maple & Ash - Gold Coast Maple & Ash will continue to open its tented courtyard patio space this winter. The patio dining experience serves a collection of Maple & Ash classics, light salads, sushi, and cocktails. The patio's menu offers diverse options, with a one-stop shop for steak, seafood and sushi. You can't go wrong with steak, but we also recommend the shrimp cocktail and spanish octopus.

Taxim - Wicker Park

It’s the most wonderful site for dining and drinks. If you missed the previous river dome set up by City Winery at Riverwalk, you can't miss the dome and tented patio at their West Loop location this year! City Winery is not only a must for wine lovers, their food is up to par as well. We highly recommend the Duck Tostadas, Impossible Burger, and Rosé Milkshake.

Taxim provides heat lamps on its rooftop garden during the wintertime. You can enjoy Greek wines, spirits, and history-inspired drinks on a beautiful rooftop at this famous Greek-style restaurant. The all-Greek wine list is affordable and interesting. The menu has a wide range of food options using seasonal ingredients to create fresh and wonderful village cuisine. Check out their impressive selection of fresh-shelled favas with yogurt and lamb confit.

VU Rooftop - South Loop

Barcocina - Lakeview

If you're looking for a luxurious, high-end (and high-rise) experience this winter, VU rooftop should definitely top your list of options. With over 13,000 square feet, VU rooftop features glass walls for guests to enjoy an unparalleled skyline view. Their upscale rooftop venue also offers cozy couches and fire pits to create a warm environment when it’s cold out. Gather around the fire, have a VU burger, and order a glass of VU SIDECAR for the perfect night out.

Barcocina is a trendy Mexican restaurant known for its unique cuisine. It combines Latin flavors with traditional Mexican dishes. Here you can sip on craft cocktails, snack on tacos at brunch, or order a bowl of their Classic Chicken Tortilla Soup for dinner. Don't forget to order a Pumpkin Cheesecake Roll for dessert served with Mexican Coffee ice cream. Barcocina offers fire pits on the rooftop and you can also book your own igloo. It’s the perfect place to catch up with friends old and new.

PAULA'S THAI KITCHEN - Lincoln Park TALAY - West Loop

GHIN KHAO EAT RICE - Pilsen This Pilsen gem is small but mighty! The food is excellent. The crab fried rice is a must. Have a cup of Thai milk tea with it and you have a perfect lunch.

Windy City Ice Skating

A Whole

By Deena Kouroupas

Tis’ the season to strap on your skates and hit the ice! The Chicagoland area offers multiple opportunities to make it to the rink this season.

NEW WORLD

Maggie Daley Park Maggie Daley Park’s ice skating ribbon is a Chicago favorite during the winter months. Located in the heart of the city, a trip here makes for a great family-friendly activity or festive date night. Tickets are sold in advance with scheduled reservations due to the limited capacity.

Warren Park Ice Rink

Gallagher Way

This Evanston ice rink is a beloved family favorite. This winter, Warren Park has implemented a ticket system in order to best accommodate demand while following COVID-19 restrictions. They offer open skate and free admission with a skate rental of $7. Drop in and learn to skate for $10 or try your hand at stick and puck, and pond hockey ($8 for individuals or $10 for parent and child).

Ice skating is back at Gallagher Way this season. They’re open through February with free admission for those under 12 and $6 for those 13 and up. They offer skating and curling lessons, as well as a brand new attraction this year: ice bumper cars! Bump and swirl around the rink for ten minutes for only $15.

Millennium Park Ice Rink

McKinley Ice Rink

Millennium Park is bringing back their winter ice skating through the end of March for its 20th anniversary season. Online reservations are required but admission is free! They also offer free skating lessons on most Saturdays and Sundays. While you’re there, enjoy hot drinks and snacks from Momentum Coffee.

Mckinley Ice Rink has some great deals available this season with admittance available on a first-come-first-serve basis. General admission is free with the option to rent a pair of skates for $7. They also offer skating lessons for $10, in addition to stick and puck, and pond hockey ($8 for individuals, $10 for parent and child).

No trip to Chicago is complete without a visit to Skydeck Chicago. With spectacular views on the 103rd floor of Willis Tower, you can step out on The Ledge, overlooking the city from 1,353 feet in the air. The experience provides the perfect Instagram opportunity – and a memory to last a lifetime. Earlier this year, Skydeck Chicago unveiled a massive transformation! The revamped attraction reveals a can’t-miss, one stop Chicago experience, featuring an immersive look at the city from street to sky.

What to Explore Now when you enter Willis Tower for your Skydeck Chicago experience, you’ll be greeted with a brand-new shopping, dining, and entertainment emporium called Catalog. The new Skydeck Chicago Experience guides you through a Chicago-themed museum, which features interactive exhibits celebrating the unique personality of Chicago.

Deeply rooted in Chicago traditions and its rich history, these exhibits are meant to bring the city to life at your fingertips. From the start, visitors will be immersed in Chicago history from the Great Chicago Fire to iconic city legends. Throughout the exhibit, visitors will learn about Chicago during its formative years, experience an interactive fly-through architecture video tour, capture a photo on a giant Chicago style hotdog bench or deepdish pizza platform, and take a seat on a CTA train car transporting you through vibrant Chicago neighborhoods.

The Grand Finale Once you’ve taken in all there is to see downstairs, head up the elevator for a transformed experience on the 103rd floor with fresh design features, informational videos about the city’s growth and travel patterns, and even floor to ceiling monitors showcasing pose inspiration for the big moment when you step out on The Ledge. There’s no doubt that you’ll walk away with a camera roll full of pictures and unforgettable memories! Visit theskydeck.com for the most up-to-date hours and ticketing information.

TREAT YOURSELF AT THE SPA By: Wenqing Xu

Beat those Chicago winter blues and stress of holiday shopping. Enjoy an afternoon at one of the many excellent spas the city has to offer.

ALLYU SPA – Goose Island Allyu (ah-yu) is the Quechua word for community, representing the commitment of this spa to its clients and the earth. Allyu Spa offers a safe space, superior treatments, resources, education, and products that promote good health and well-being. And with their many features in local and national media, they must be doing something right.

THE SPA AT PALMER HOUSE The Loop The iconic Palmer House hotel has a long and intriguing history. It also offers some of the most interesting specialty spa treatments around. Honoré Palmer’s Hydrotub immersion uses water to relieve stress and relax your muscles, and the Chicago Fire and Ice Massage includes a mix of heated and cooling salts. Not sure what to pick? Go for the Empire treatment, which includes a massage, facial, and mani-pedi.

DRINK

Scofflaw - Logan Square This Logan Square bar specializes in gin-infused cocktails and mixes a baroque-style interior — including a fireplace — with hip and friendly staff. Our cocktail recommendation: the Red Room (Scofflaw Old Tom Gin, Mezcal, Dry Vermouth, Becherovka, Fino Sherry, Campari, Absinthe).

The Broken Shaker @ Freehand Hotel - River North

BABY, IT’S COLD OUTSIDE

‘TIS FIREPLACE SEASON By Leentje De Leeuw

Gathering around the fireplace with friends or family is one of the best ways to spend a cold Chicago evening. Do so at some of our favorite cozy spots around the city. Lobby @ The Hoxton Hotel West Loop Located in what many magazines describe as one of America’s ‘coolest neighborhoods,’ the Hoxton is the perfect place for some people-watching. Grab a seat by the fireplace, order a cocktail from the Lazy Bar, and enjoy the view. Our cocktail recommendation: the Boulevardier (Bourbon, Vermouth di Torino, House Red Bitters)

Drawing Room @ the Chicago Athletic Association - The Loop The historic Chicago Athletic Association’s hotel lobby is as cozy as they come featuring not one, not two, but three grand fireplaces. Gather around the community café tables or pick a more intimate spot on one of the comfy couches while you sip on a cocktail or fine glass of wine. If you’re in the mood for some old-school games, make sure to visit the Game Room on the same level. Drink suggestion: a classic Old Fashioned (Bonded Bourbon, Demerara, Angostura Bitters)

Violet Hour - Wicker Park Arrive early if you want to secure a seat by the fireplace at Violet Hour, one of the city’s most outstanding cocktail bars. Make your way to the back room and enjoy an intimate evening with signature cocktails in good company. Our favorites include the Woolworth Manhattan (Buffalo Trace bourbon, Carpano Antica, Cynar, angostura bitters, house root beer bitters) and the Ding Dong Ditch (Gin, Apry, Blackberry Demerara, lemon, Angostura, fresh grated cinnamon). Cheers!

Tortoise Supper Club - River North Take a few steps below street level and you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time when you enter the warm, wooded, dimly-lit Tortoise Supper Club — live jazz included. Try their happy hour specials: oysters, shrimp, and cocktails of course. Hungry for more? There’s plenty of traditional American fare on the menu as well.

The Freehand is unlike most hotels, so it goes without saying that the Broken Shaker is not your typical hotel bar or restaurant. Set in the back of the hotel lobby, this Bohémien-style space offers exotic and innovative ingredients, including a fireplace draped with an Aztec rug. Cocktail recommendation: Honk If You’re Lonely (Smooth Ambler Contradiction Whiskey, Rhine Hall Cherry Brandy, Aperol, sesame, basil, lemon)

Z Bar @ the Peninsula Hotel Magnificent Mile Named after the Peninsula Hotels’ first female General Manager, Maria Zec, Z-bar is located right above Chicago’s Magnificent Mile. The year-round rooftop not only offers spectacular views, it also keeps you warm during the city’s coldest days. An impressive cocktail and dinner menu awaits. Special occasion cocktail recommendation: The Oak & Apple (The Macallan 12 year, pear, ginger, bergamot and ginger)

Moody’s Pub - Edgewater Moody’s, established in 1959, is a Chicago staple, especially during winter. It has the feel of a ski lodge and features two amazing fireplaces, beamed ceilings, stained glass, candlelit tables, and romance galore. Feeling cold? Order one of their Fireside Fantasies, a selection of warm winter drinks, including the Hot Shot (Galliano and coffee topped with whipped cream), the Banana Mocha (Creme de Banana and hot chocolate with whipped cream), and the Big Apple (rum, hot cider, and sprinkled cinnamon).

WARM WINTER DRINKS CHICAGO CONCIERGES WEIGH IN ON THEIR FAVORITE WARM-UP DRINKS By Leentje De Leeuw DUKE OF PERTH

HOT COCKTAILS AT THE GAGE

Kristen Kopplin (The Drake): “While The Violet Hour and the IO Godfrey are wonderful go-tos for hot toddies of many types, my top spot for a warm winter's drink is the friendly Lakewood spot Duke of Perth. Grab a table near the fireplace and pair their hot buttered rum or hot port with either the traditional Fish 'n Chips or Shepherd's Pie for a satisfying evening out.”

Faith Czajkowski (JW Marriott): “I love the hot cocktails at the Gage, especially the coffee with Baileys! I’m looking forward to the glühwein at Christkindlmarket too!”

CHRISTKINDLMARKET With Christkindlmarket celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, the souvenir mug is a celebration in and of itself. Different from the traditional boot shape, this year’s mug is elegantly flute-shaped, featuring a shimmering Chicago skyline and a colorful market scene. Both the hot apple cider and glühwein are the favorites of many Chicagoans. Michelle Ayala (Corporate Concierge): “My favorite warm cocktail is definitely the hot apple cider at the Christkindlmarket! The souvenir mugs are an added bonus. So glad it's back in person this year.”

BOOZY TEA SERVICE Alex Yu (Pendry Hotel): “The Pendry is debuting a Boozy Tea service this winter. I highly recommend the St. Jerry. It has chaiinfused bourbon!”

TOM & JERRY AT MILLER’S PUB The Tom & Jerry, a spiked eggnog served in a brown coffee mug, at the iconic Miller’s Pub in the Loop is a favorite of many, including Patty Holden-Nelson (Silversmith Hotel): “It is only served during the holiday season. I look forward to it every year!”

PIANO BARS By Dustin Ford The piano, one of mankind’s biggest and yet most unique musical instruments. They are one of the most noticeable things in a room, and for good reason. Pianos are exciting, relaxing, and pleasing to the senses. You see a lot of pianos in Chicago businesses, especially the bars. Some have them there as decorations, but others take them in as a part of their life.

Howl at the Moon If you didn’t come for the literal bucket-sized cocktails, then you probably came for atmosphere and good times. These highenergy shows are bound to make your feet start tapping. The dueling piano stage offers and intimate experience for guests and performers, alike.

Redhead Piano Bar The Redhead Piano bar is a favorite to locals and tourists alike. This place brings people in from the hectic life on Ontario Street and opens up to a new world of relaxation. It features small bits with big taste, sophisticated martinis and wines, high quality cigars with complimentary smoking lounge, and that sweet, smooth piano string action.

INTERNATIONAL COFFEE AT TORALI BAR Melissa Long (The Ritz-Carlton) loves a good hot toddy: “My favorite warm-up drink is the International Coffee, made with Irish whiskey, at the Torali Bar!”

EDITOR’S PICK HOT APPLE CIDER @ BLACK BARREL Chef José soaks the fresh apples in water overnight and then crushes them and adds some honey and his secret winter spice mix. Enjoy it with or without a splash of bourbon, but Black Barrel’s hot apple cider always tastes better in good company!

Zebra Lounge This watering hole has performers tickling the ivories every night. The Zebra lounge has been in business ever since your grandparents started bar hopping. Somehow the were able to stuff big leather booths, zebra print lamps, a bar, a piano, and all that coolness into this compact space.

Sluggers Sluggers is the only piano bar that can capture the rapid energy of diehard sports fans. It’s hard to imagine a sports bar right next to Wrigley Field with batting cages, arcade games, and dueling pianos, but Sluggers was able to pull it off with flying colors. Speaking of colors, remember that Sluggers is located in the heart of Cubs territory!
