By Leentje De Leeuw

Each one of Chicago’s 77 neighborhoods has its unique and local charms and plenty of local businesses to explore. August is Black Owned Business Month, so make sure to check out these neighborhoods and their hottest of spots. HYDE PARK Hyde Park is home to so many iconic events, places, and people: the 1893 Columbian Exposition, the University of Chicago, former President Barack Obama, and the Museum of Science and Industry, to name just a few. Explore the largest science museum in the Western Hemisphere, get lost on some of the most stunning campuses in the world or visit one of Hyde Park’s other classics: Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robie House (a UNESCO World Heritage Site!), the DuSable Museum, the Oriental Institute, and many more iconic places. Don’t forget to check out Yoko Ono’s only permanent art installation in the US, Skylanding, in the Garden of the Phoenix.

EAT & DRINK You can eat and drink your way through Hyde Park all day long. Start in the morning with a stop at Valois, one of Barack Obama’s favorite breakfast spots. Try the Garbage Burger or Pizza—another Obama favorite—at Medici on 57th for lunch, and end the day at Erick Williams’ Virtue. Make sure to make reservations, as this place is booming since Chef Erick took home a 2022 James Beard Award! Want a nightcap? Head over to 14 Parish and try one of the more than 100 different kinds of rums and enjoy a Caribbean inspired late night snack! 2 | CONCIERGE PREFERRED

PULLMAN DISTRICT You may have heard about the Pullman Historic District being Chicago’s first National Monument. Consider this historic neighborhood a wellpreserved time capsule that will transport you all the way back to the 1880s. Think striking brick buildings, a fascinating history, and picture-perfect streets. The country’s first planned industrial town was built by luxury rail car tycoon George Pullman for his employees (who later kicked off the American labor movement in protest of Pullman raising rents). The district included more than 1,500 companyowned houses, a church, a school, and a building that housed offices, stores, a library, and a bank. Hungry for more details? Check out the brand new Visitors Center or immerse yourself in the neighborhood’s history by taking one of the guided or self-guided tours that embark from Pullman Exhibit Hall. Don’t forget to pay a visit to the A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum, honoring the significant contributions of Black railroad workers to the US labor movement.

EAT & DRINK Don’t forget to put Lexington Betty Smokehouse on your list, sample some of the best Chicago-style barbecue with all the soulful sides you can handle! Finish the day with home good Old Fashioned Donuts and you’d have had the perfect day! More neighborhood news? Check ChooseChicago.com & ConciergePreferred.com AUGUST-SEPTEMBER 2022 ISSUE | 3

Experience Summer on the Riverwalk By Leentje De Leeuw

Spending time by the water when temperatures rise is always a good idea. And we cannot think of a better way to spend a hot summer day than to go for a stroll on the Riverwalk.

Tiny Tapp & Tiny Café Tiny Tapp & Tiny Café delivers a genuine neighborhood experience in the heart of downtown. The Café specializes in freshly brewed coffee from locally sourced beans, lemonade, fresh squeezed orange juice, pastries, and quality ice cream. The Tapp is a lively gathering place featuring mouthwatering cocktails, a good selection of wines, and craft beer on tap. Try Henry’s Holiday frozen cocktail, the perfect summer drink. The contemporary American menu includes hearty sandwiches, sides, and starters such as the delectable Street Corn Nachos.

The Riverwalk is truly Chicago’s second waterfront. Chicagoans have long treasured our beautiful lakefront, but now, more than ever, we are spending time close to our river. This is new because Chicago long ignored its river. But the Chicago River has undergone a major transformation. There is life in and along the river once again, including dozens of species of fish, many birds…and happy humans. Enjoy meandering the continuous scenic parkway that is the Riverwalk, enjoying the views of Chicago’s famed architecture while enjoying many other pleasures: food, drink, shade trees, flowers, music, art. The design of the Riverwalk is unique. From State Street to the west, between every two bridges is a section called a “room.” These inviting public spaces create different experiences, from dining to boating to–believe it or not–fishing. The award-winning Chicago Riverwalk offers many amenities. Accessibility is one of the priorities. Every third room on the Riverwalk has a well-designed ramp. And public art is on show all along the Riverwalk, much of it symbolizing the story of Chicago and its river. You can choose to experience the Riverwalk from the water by renting a kayak. Or you may decide to stay on shore and head to one of the most scenic bars and restaurants in the city. Relax and take it all in. We selected four of our favorite places to grab a bite, enjoy a drink, and watch all the boats go by. 4 | CONCIERGE PREFERRED

Chicago Brewhouse This popular Riverwalk restaurant and bar celebrates Chicago. The Brewhouse exclusively offers local craft beers. And the menu pays tribute to the city’s diverse neighborhoods and their respective global cuisines with its menu of tacos, wontons, gyro sliders, Italian beef, and more. MAKE IT PICTURE PERFECT

CONTINUATION FROM PAGE 5

The Northman Beer & Cider Garden The Northman immerses you in a Europeanstyle beer garden along the river. Cider is the star here, but a vast beverage menu includes craft beers, wines, hard seltzers, kombucha and more. Have a seat at one of the picnic tables and order some hearty Old World food to accompany your drink: from sausage and cheese to warm pretzels. And there will be live music too, from Memorial Day through Labor Day!

Island Party Hut Tiki Bar & Grill There’s always a party atmosphere at this tropical-themed bar. Enjoy pulled pork or a Big Kahuna Burger with a frozen cocktail or your choice of island-inspired drinks. Then play a round of ping pong, jumbo Jenga, or corn hole, all while enjoying the music wafting on the summer breeze.

EAT MEET THE WINDY CITY

Smokeout Chefs By Leentje De Leeuw

Windy City Smokeout returns to Chicago on August 4-7. It’s the place to be for lovers of great barbecue, bourbon and country music! Live performers include Tim McGraw, Miranda Lambert, Sam Hunt and Willy Nelson, but there’s also an all-star BBQ chef line-up, including these Chicago-based chefs: TIM COTTINI @ BUB CITY Bub City is Chicago’s top destination for live country music, whiskey and barbecue. Chef Tim Cottini's favorite barbecue dish is the 18 Hour Smoked Brisket, a dish that takes finesse to execute and requires a handson approach to ensure that each piece is up to the restaurant's high standards. Chef also loves the Brisket Burnt Ends, cooked in housemade BBQ sauce for an additional 4 hours until the meat caramelizes, giving it a crispy exterior with a moist and flavorful interior.

Sweet Home Chicago

DAVE BONNER @ GREEN STREET SMOKED MEATS Located down a charming brick paved alley in the West Loop, the nationally acclaimed Green Street Smoked Meats beckons guests with rock music and house-smoked, Central Texas-inspired BBQ, served at the counter in a warehouse-style restaurant. The curated menu focuses on staples of backyard BBQ, including brisket, beef short ribs, and chicken legs, along with rich pork belly and smoked salmon. An array of vegetable-centric side dishes includes a savory potato salad, sweet and nutty broccoli salad, and the popular Frito pie. Guests enjoy a selection of specially chosen craft beers and BBQ-friendly cocktail pairings.

D’ANDRE CARTER @ SOUL & SMOKE

garrettpopcorn.com

D’Andre Carter is no stranger to the food world. The Chicago-based chef ran a Michelin-starred kitchen, then left fine dining to strike out on his own. He first hosted pop-up dinners, then started a full-service catering company, and finally launched Soul & Smoke. Carter describes himself as a chef first, and pitmaster second—a careful and elevated approach to the barbecue experience that makes Soul & Smoke unique. Chef D'Andre: "I connect most with our rib tips because I've been eating them since early childhood. Ours are hickory smoked to perfection and served with Soul & Smoke's tangy signature sauce that takes them over the top." AUGUST-SEPTEMBER 2022 ISSUE | 11

Casey Frankel, The Peninsula “I love the chicken wings at The Moonlighter in Logan Square. They have a great (VERY dog friendly!) patio during the warmer months and comfortable seating inside for watching all the games. Great beer list too!”

Windy City Wings Time Our guide to the best Chicken Wings in town By Leentje De Leeuw

We asked our concierge friends about the best wings and added a few of our own favorites to the list. Justin Ivie, Courtyard Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile “I always recommend the Firecracker Wings at Jake Melnick's to our guests. They're a perfect blend of sweet and spicy.” Jake Melnick’s has been a favorite spot for locals since opening twenty years ago. The restaurant & sports bar’s proximity to bustling Michigan Avenue has also made it a top dining and drinking destination for tourists, especially during the summer months. The wings come in so many different flavors that you will have to come back to try more!

Flor Sigaran, BuildingHub Concierge “My favorites are the Offset Wings at Offset BBQ on California Avenue. They have great wings; served with pickled carrots and your choice of sauce. Definitely try the white sauce!”

Etienne Padin, The Ivy Hotel “I love the Kaibi Hot Wings at Lady Gregory’s in Andersonville! The succulent grilled wings are covered in a spicy soy ginger sauce and come with a side of garlic cream dip. If gastro wings weren’t a thing yet: they definitely will be once you have tried these!” 12 | CONCIERGE PREFERRED

Sharyne Tu at Macy’s “My favorite wings are the Honey Garlic Wings at bb.q chicken in Edgewater - but there are other locations in Lincoln Park, Chinatown, and several suburbs.”

Morgan Jae Cohen, Sofitel Chicago Magnificent Mile “I love the K-town Chicken Wings from the Korean Street BBQ restaurant, Del Seoul, located on N Clark Street. They’re ‘lollipop style’, which makes them larger than average chicken wings, and not quite as messy. The sweet glaze on top of the spice gives them a great flavor.”

Hooters With over 300 locations, Hooters is one of the best-known restaurant chains in the country. And they happen to be renowned for their … chicken wings! Their Original Hooters Style wings have been on the menu for over thirty years now: breaded by hand, tossed in your choice of sauce, and served by your favorite Hooters girl. Not into traditional wings? Try Hooters’ Smoked Wings or Hooters’ Daytona Beach ® Style Wings.

Monk’s Pub Monk’s is one of my favorite low-key hang-outs in the Loop. They always have a great selection of beers on tap and food classics on the menu. I love spicy stuff, so I am a sucker for their Mango Habanero chicken wings. But they also have the Traditional Buffalo Wings as well as the vegan Cauliflower Wings or the boneless wings if you don’t like gnawing! Surplus: the staff at Monk’s simply rocks!

Wishbone Located in the West Loop, Wishbone serves delicious southern cuisine. The spacious location is suitable for large parties. Enjoy the lunch, dinner, and brunch menus with dishes like shrimp and grits, catfish, and gumbo.

EATING OUT WITH THE KIDS

Chicago’s Family-Friendliest Restaurants By Elena Wilson

Are you traveling as a family? Finding spaces that accommodate large groups and children can be a hassle. Luckily, Chicago is filled with family friendly restaurants that will welcome patrons of any age. Here are our top picks.

Ed Debevic’s Try out Chicago’s famous retro-themed diner! Ed Debevic’s is sure to be one of your most unique dining experiences. Your servers will play 60’s inspired characters while you enjoy breakfast, lunch, or dinner. You can’t forget the kids menu with tasty hamburgers, hot dogs, and chicken tenders!

Fatso’s Last Stand Fatso’s Last Stand takes the classic hot dog stand to the next level. At its two locations in Ukrainian Village or Lincoln park, get a taste of a Fatso Burger, mac and cheese, or char dogs in an inviting outdoor space.

Lou Mitchell’s Stax Cafe This cafe specializes in breakfast classics with fresh and locally sourced ingredients. In its two locations in Little Italy and River West you can try a variety of sweet and savory dishes, sure to satisfy any palette. Enjoy features like chocolate chip bacon pancakes, frittatas, or sandwiches.

Millennium Hall Millennium Hall is a new multiconcept dining experience that opened in Millennium Park earlier this summer. Napolita is the Italian restaurant that opened right under Chicago's most famous attraction, Cloud Gate AKA The Bean. The Plaza has classic pub grub items as well as plenty of kids' favorites. 14 | CONCIERGE PREFERRED

Portillo’s Many locals will agree you haven’t experienced Chicago until you go to Portillo’s. With the first location opening in 1963, this historical restaurant has become synonymous with Chicago. Try Chicago classics like Italian beef and a Chicago style garden dog. Portillo's is great for gatherings and experiencing Chicago’s history through food.

Pinstripes Food isn’t the only thing you will enjoy at Pinstripes. This downtown restaurant offers Italian American cuisine alongside bowling and bocce. Strike some pins as you chow down on wings, pizza, sandwiches, and more.

Savor breakfast and lunch at this diner on historic Route 66. Lou Mitchell’s has pancakes, waffles, a wide variety of omelets, and donut holes. Ladies and children will even receive boxes of milk duds inspired by Greek hospitality!

Palace Grill If you’re a family of Blackhawks fans this is the restaurant for you. Palace Grill has been serving the community since 1938 and is just a short walk away from the United Center. It’s frequented by members of the Blackhawks team themselves and dishes up a hearty breakfast. Experience the sports buzz, friendly staff, and delicious items like eggs, omelets, pancakes, french toast, and more.

Wildberry Pancakes & Cafe This breakfast spot has two locations on Randolph and inside Water Tower Place. Enjoy healthy options with fresh ingredients, and a broad drink menu with espressos, mochas, smoothies, and more. The flavorful dishes like french toast, crepes, sandwiches, and even eggs benedict are sure to satisfy every palette, including a sweet tooth!

Yolk Award-winning Yolk is a local favorite for breakfast with something for everyone. Try the savory Countryside Skillet packed with eggs, bacon, cheese, and veggies with country sausage gravy. Or indulge in Yolk’s famous Red Velvet French Toast (red velvet cake, cream cheese, strawberries and whipped cream). Not sure what to order? Definitely go for the All Star Combo, and sample a little bit of everything. AUGUST-SEPTEMBER 2022 ISSUE | 15

Outdoor Activities

[6 WAYS TO] MAKE THE MOST OF CHICAGO SUMMER By Hannah Carroll & Leentje De Leeuw

Explore Chicago’s Parks

See the City from Above

Yes, we’ve already reached the final two months of summer…with autumn on the horizon. Get outside with these activities while the warmth of summer permits! Get on the Water Whether you’re looking to get active, explore the city, or escape the summer heat, Chicago’s options for aquatic fun are endless. Rent a kayak and paddle down the Chicago River. Tour the city by river on the Chicago Water Taxi or gain a new perspective by learning about architectural history aboard one of Shoreline Sightseeing’s vessels or First Lady’s architecture cruise. Want to bring your pooch? Check out Mercury’s Canine Cruise! If you’d rather cruise at your own pace, check out Come Sailing Inc.: they offer private charters for small groups of 6 or less. How about your own private sunset cruise or a fireworks outing on Wednesday or Saturday night? If you plan to pop the question, Captain Michael will happily help you plan the perfect romantic proposal, like he -successfully- did 51 times already! 26 | CONCIERGE PREFERRED

Trek a Trail

Chicago isn’t known as “City in a Garden” for nothing! With over 600 parks, everyone is sure to find an outdoor space they enjoy. Head to the famed Millennium Park to visit “The Bean” and Crown Fountain or attend one of the Park’s many live events. And adjacent to Millennium Park, you will also find the delightful Maggie Daley Park–every kid’s dream. Explore three acres of play space complete with fantastical structures. Looking to simply soak in the beauty of nature? Garfield Park on the West Side of Chicago is especially popular for its Conservatory, which houses over 100,000 plants and a play area for little ones. Some of the best views of Chicago are seen from above. Looking down on this magnificent city, one can marvel at the profusion of spectacular buildings and the vastness of Lake Michigan. Catch all the summer vibes of the city while enjoying drinks or a full meal on a rooftop. Some favorites include LondonHouse, Cindy’s, AIRE, Raised, Rosebud on Randolph, and Upstairs at The Gwen.

City views? Lakefront? Short walk? Long bike ride? Chicago’s trails have you covered. Walk, ride or run the Lakefront Trail, an 18-mile paved trail along Lake Michigan. Make a slight detour at any point to explore Chicago’s numerous lakeside neighborhoods. Take the Chicago Riverwalk to surround yourself with the towering architecture of Chicago. Many restaurants line the Riverwalk, making it perfect for a pre- or post-meal scenic stroll. To explore the diverse neighborhoods of Chicago, head to the northwest side of the city for the 606 Trail, once an abandoned rail route. This unique elevated pathway connects four of Chicago’s neighborhoods. With 12 access points and much to see, this is an excellent way to explore the culture and ambience of these distinct areas.

Hit the Beach Rest and relax while soaking in the sun at one of Chicago’s two dozen beaches. Get views of the Lake and skyline from the popular North Avenue Beach. Rent paddle boards by the hour at Montrose Beach. Splash in the shallows at Ohio Street Beach. Marvel at the beauty of a sunset while listening to live music at 63rd Street Beach. Anywhere along Chicago’s lakefront, there is a nearby beach perfect for your day in the sun.

Cruise on a Fireboat For a unique perspective on the water, hop on a Chicago Fireboat Tour. This veteranowned business makes use of a retired, classic fireboat, designed to fit under the city’s river bridges and used to fight fires throughout the 20th century. Not only will you learn about Chicago’s history and architecture while enjoying the spectacular views, you’ll hear fascinating accounts of the boat’s battles with fire. SHARE YOUR BEST CHICAGO SUMMER PICTURES ON INSTAGRAM AND TAG

Catch a Movie Indoors or Out By Nora Mccaughey

Whether you want to bask in the glorious heat of summer or cool down in the A/C, Chicago has a myriad of options for movie buffs (or casual viewers), so be sure to check if your favorite movie is playing in a park or theater near you. Millennium Park Millennium Park is one of the most iconic areas of Chicago, so what better place to spread out a blanket and relax? Throughout July and August, Millennium Park will be screening recent movies like “Encanto” and “In the Heights,” along with classics like “Dirty Dancing” and “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.”

Movies in the Parks

The Music Box Theater But for a truly unique experience, try checking out one of Chicago’s old school movie theaters. They might not have the more recent releases, but the off-beat movies and beautiful architecture make for a summer adventure. The Music Box Theater features a gorgeous starry ceiling and interactive viewer experiences with midnight showings of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” and “The Room,” two cult classics that elevate the movie-watching experience.

If the Loop is too far to travel for a night out, check out the schedule for Movies in the Parks. Across the city, from the North Side to the South Side, neighborhood parks are offering family friendly movies throughout the summer, free of admission. Lincoln Park, Wicker Park, Indian Boundary Park, Mary Bartelme, and Sherman Park are just a few examples of areas to check out on some summer nights.

First Run Movie Theaters Of course, there’s always the option to spend the day in a comfortably air conditioned theater for just a few dollars. Most movie theaters will be playing the newest summer blockbusters: “Elvis,” “Minions: The Rise of Gru,” and “Top Gun: Maverick.”

CANDACE PARKER’S Chicago Hot Spots By Leentje De Leeuw

We asked WNBA All Star player Candace Parker about her favorite places and things to do in Chicago. ON A BOAT ON LAKE MICHIGAN IN THE SUMMERTIME

VISIT THE SHEDD AQUARIUM WITH MY FAMILY

Experiencing Chicago from the water is a must for tourists and locals alike. Check out the article on page 26 for plenty of boating tips and other outdoor activities.

Every Wednesday through August 31, 2022, the Shedd is jazzin’ it up. As the sun goes down, the music heats up and it’s time to relax with a drink on the breezy Shedd terrace, with an amazing view of the skyline. The Shedd Aquarium is open during the concerts and all the animal experiences (stingray touch, stingray feeding, sea star touch., and sturgeon touch) can be enjoyed as well.

VISIT THE BROOKFIELD ZOO WITH MY FAMILY

FOOD! ANY CHICAGO FOOD STAPLE - PORTILLO’S AND GIORDANO’S ARE MY FAVORITE SPOTS

Did you know you can feed a giraffe or meet a penguin at the Brookfield Zoo? The giraffes spend much of their day browsing but they never say no to a meal. Twice each day, you can deliver up some delicious greens that the giraffes will take right from your hand. It's a great way to connect with these majestic animals and also help keep them well-fed and happy. If you’d rather meet & greet with the penguins, or feed them even: make sure to book those popular activities online, in advance of your visit to the zoo.

The Chicago-style hotdog was launched as the “Depression Sandwich” in 1929, the year the Great Depression began. A Chicago-style hotdog has a very strict list of ingredients: a poppy seed bun, a 100% beef hot dog, yellow mustard, sweet relish, tomato slices, diced onion, kosher pickle spear, sport peppers & celery salt. And absolutely NO ketchup!

CATCH A SKY GAME The 2021 WNBA Champions are on a roll again this year and we highly recommend attending one of their upcoming home games at the Wintrust Arena in the South Loop. This is the calendar - but many games will be added once the playoffs start!

GO TO CENTENNIAL BEACH, IN MY HOMETOWN OF NAPERVILLE Centennial Beach’s historic stone quarry is not a swimming pool, not a lake but it is a unique swimming experience. Wade (pun intended!) into the zero-depth entry and swim to depths of 15 feet. For generations, Centennial Beach has been the local “swimming hole” for many Naperville residents and their guests. It’s a great place to meet friends, gather with family, or simply relax and enjoy.

Editor’s Pick: VietFive After the fall of Saigon in 1975, Tuan Huynh's family was displaced from Danang City to the rural central highlands of Vietnam and continues to live there to this day. As seasoned farmers, they have been harvesting Robusta coffee for decades. The coffee beans are grown and harvested in Vietnam and roasted in Chicago. The coffee is sold at the Vietfive shop in the West Loop, where I like to enjoy my Vietnamese Iced Coffee (made with condensed milk) on a hot summer (or Indian Summer) day!

Colectivo Coffee “I’m not a coffee drinker, but I love a good chai latte. Colectivo Coffee, also located on North Clark Street in Lincoln Park, has a great Lavender flavored iced chai latte. It’s so refreshing!” Morgan Jae Cohen - Sofitel Chicago Magnificent Mile AUGUST-SEPTEMBER 2022 ISSUE | 35

SCORCHED EARTH @ROKA AKOR The concept for the Scorched Earth is based on a reimagined Mezcal Margarita. The black lime (Rare Tea Cellars) infused Mezcal offers a softer balance of smoke and acidity. The infused Mezcal base is paired with an aromatized wine Cocchi Americano, and a herbaceous floral liqueur Dolin Génépi le Chamois. The Scorched Earth is balanced with bright acid from Sudachi juice and herbal honey bitters. PORRONS @BORDEL Porróns are the original large format cocktail receptacle and never go out of style. Due to the recent popularity of the Dirty Shirley, The Dearborn offers guests the option to spike the zeroproof cocktail with any booze of their choice. THE PORNSTAR MARTINI @LG’S BAR & KITCHEN The perfect addition to a warm spring or summer day, this colorful drink is typically served with a champagne shooter or splash of champagne.
