Marina City

Few Chicago buildings were as innovative in design or impactful on their environment as this Bertrand Goldberg creation, completed in 1967. At that time the area was largely railroads and industrial, so Goldberg created a “city within a city” that included restaurants, shops, a bowling alley, a theater, an office building, and, of course, a marina.

Richter’s Food Products

This Art Deco factory from 1933 – designed by architect H. Peter Henschein whose specialty was meat packing facilities – once produced sausages and processed meats. The elegant entrances are framed in black terra-cotta flecked with gold, which is used again in colorful, geometric designs above the first-floor windows.

800 Block of West Fulton Market

Now filled with chic restaurants, the original buildings on this block were built in 1887 for an association of meatpackers. A modern contrast is provided by 800 Fulton, an office building designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill that opened in 2021. The expressed structural bracing is appropriate for both the neighborhood and the firm that designed the former John Hancock Building.

Charnley-Persky House

This Gold Coast house was designed in 1891 by Adler & Sullivan when Frank Lloyd Wright was Louis Sullivan’s chief draftsman, so it presents a rare opportunity to see the genius of both architects under one broad roof. Today owned by the Society of Architectural Historians, weekly tours allow visitors to experience the breathtaking atrium at the center of the house.

Chicago Federal Center Post Office

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe designed the full-block Federal Center to include two high-rises and a single-story post office. The structural steel columns of the post office brace enormous panes of tinted glass. Note that the same stone is used for the plaza and the post office floor, creating a seamless connection between interior and exterior. Alexander Calder’s bright red painted-steel Flamingo is a beautiful foil to the matte black geometries of Mies buildings.

Inland Steel

St. Regis Chicago

This sculptural tower by Studio Gang is Chicago’s third-tallest building. Its zigzag profile is formed by stacking truncated pyramid shapes in alternating orientations. Near the top of is a “blow-through” floor to minimize the effects of the wind.

Chicago Cultural Center

Built as the Chicago Public Library in 1897 by Boston architects Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge, this latter-day Renaissance palace has a majestic interior with two must-see spaces: Preston Bradley Hall, with its shimmering mosaics of Tiffany Favrile glass, and the recently restored GAR Rooms. Outside, the Garland Court wall features Kerry James Marshall’s 2017 mural Rushmore, honoring twenty Chicago women.

Marquette Building

This Holabird & Roche building from 1895 is an exemplar of the Chicago style: the rectangular grid of its structural steel skeleton is clearly articulated by its brick-and-terra-cotta cladding. The two-story lobby is sumptuously decorated with Tiffany mosaic scenes of Father Jacques Marquette’s seventeenth-century expedition through Illinois.

DuSable (Michigan Avenue) Bridge Chicago has more moveable bridges than almost any other city in the world. Edward H. Bennett’s design for this 1920 bridge was inspired by a bridge in Paris. Each of four functional operator houses is embellished with sculptural reliefs depicting events in Chicago’s history.

Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in 1958, the sleek Inland Steel pioneered the use of stainless steel as a building material. Its design remains unique: it has large column-free floors made possible by placing the elevators and other core services into an adjacent tower.

Welcome to the neighborhoods

PILSEN

The first immigrants in this neighborhood were from Germany and the former Czechoslovakia. Today, Pilsen is shaped by generations of Mexican-American families.

DO

National Museum of Mexican Art

The NMMA has an impressive permanent collection but during this time of year it is probably best known for its Día de Los Muertos exhibit. Make sure to check it out. It is free!

Pilsen Arts & Community House

Pilsen Arts & Community House is a nonprofit organization providing space, resources, and creative community engagement through exhibitions, art instruction, and mentorship. Check out the monthly exhibit or register for one of their many workshops.

Murals

The 16th Street corridor in Pilsen probably has the largest showcase of murals in the city, but make sure to venture beyond, too. Our favorites include Hector Duarte’s iconic Gulliver in Wonderland mural, Jeff Zimmerman’s photorealistic work, the mosaics of the J-Def Peace Project, and the many projects that Francisco Mendoza (aka The Picasso of Pilsen) created with local youth.

Thalia Hall

Modeled after the Prague Opera House, Thalia Hall was built by John Dusek in 1892 to bring arts and entertainment from Bohemia to his Bohemian neighbors.

For over seven decades, the Hall was a beacon of the community and it obtained landmark status in 1985. In 2013, the current owners launched three new concepts within the storied property: a restaurant, a cocktail bar, and a public hall fit for all types of events.

Pilsen Community Books

Founded in 2016 as a general interest used bookstore, Pilsen Community Books recently transformed into Chicago’s only employee owned and operated independent bookstore. Pay them a visit!

606 Records

Music lovers and deejays alike love this charming record store that sells your favorite tunes on vinyl or cassette tapes. Find all your Chicago favorites, including house, jazz and more.

EAT AND DRINK

Try the authentic Mexican food at La Esperanza, Frida Room, 5 Rabanitos, and La Vaca. For traditional baked goods and homemade tortillas, check out Panadería Nuevo Leon. Try the traditional hot chocolate from Sleep Walk and frozen desserts at La Michoacana Premium or Paleteria Los Magos.

LITTLE VILLAGE

Little Village -or La Villita- is best known as the “Mexico of the Midwest.”

DO

The Arch

Take a picture at the terracotta arch over 26th Street, the ‘official’ entrance to this fascinating neighborhood.

ROGERS PARK

For decades, the Rogers Park neighborhood has been a hub and port of entry for immigrants and refugees. For this reason, there are over 60 languages spoken in Rogers Park, making it incredibly culturally diverse.

DO Chicago Alfresco

Enjoy live music, local art displays, shopping and dining at the brand new Chicago Alfresco site on the historic cobblestone Glenwood Avenue.

The Mile of Murals

Chicago Alfresco

See the mural by artist Sergio Maciel honoring and commemorating Congressional Medal of Honor recipient PFC Manuel Pérez, Jr., the only veteran memorial named after a Mexican-American in Illinois. Stay in the area to shop for local goods or engage with locals.

Dulcelandia del Sol

Stock up on traditional Mexican candies at the largest retail and wholesale distributor of Mexican candy in the Midwest. There are more than 1,000 options.

EAT & DRINK

Enjoy paradillas (a mix of marinated meat or seafood and vegetables over its own tabletop grill) and other traditional dishes at Mi Tierra, pick up some tacos at La Chaparrita, or have a cocktail at Osito’s Tap, Little Village’s own speakeasy-style bar.

A community-based public art initiative, the Mile of Murals at the lakefront began in 2007 with the intention to nurture, promote, and celebrate the arts-centered identity of Rogers Park. Over the last 15 years, the Mile of Murals has commissioned 15 beautiful large-scale works, totaling over 16,000 square feet of painted walls.

Jarvis Square Artisan Market

Support local arts and crafts makers at this vibrant market, held on October 15th and November 19th.

The New 400 Theater

Catch a movie at Chicago’s oldest operating movie theater.

EAT & DRINK

As mentioned, Rogers Park is a melting pot, so make sure to try Le Piano (French food & live music), Caribbean American Bakery, Taste of Peru, and El Sabor Poblano (Mexican). You will not leave hungry!

“Who would have thought that a place that offers bowling and bocce would have the best buffet brunch as well? With a wonderful view of the Odgen Slip if you choose to sit outside, Pinstripes offers great make-your-own omelet and waffle stations. It’s a great place to start your journey to Navy Pier since it’s on the way. My favorite dish? Well, everything. And you can try everything, too!”

“I love brunch at the Yolk Test Kitchen on Milwaukee Avenue. I really enjoyed the Chilaquilles. It’s a very tasty and generous portion. My friend loves the Chicken & Waffles there.”

DIM SUM BRUNCH

“I also love a good dim sum brunch when I go out with my friends or take tour guests to Chinatown. I recommend the following restaurants specializing in Dim Sum in addition to their main dishes: Phoenix, Imperial, and MingHin. Each location serves mostly the same dim sum items, though they have some of their own specialties. I like the shrimp and chives dumplings, BBQ Pork Rice Crepe Roll, Braised Chicken Feet, Custard Tarts, all served with Jasmine Tea. Dim Sum is a tradition with the Cantonese people and now popular worldwide. I love sharing a variety of small plates with friends – the more the merrier!”

EL JOSIE

“I also love El Josie in the West Loop. I go there for the lively atmosphere with rotating DJs and some amazing Mexican inspired brunch like the carnita con huevos skillet.”

“Having brunch is one of my favorite things to do in Chicago! With four of my closest friends, we created a brunch club a few years ago. We try to meet at least once a month, at a different location, of course. Our next ‘date’ is at the Hampton Social in River North. I am looking forward to their Colossal Crab Cake and Tuna Tartare!”

The Great Indoors

Rocky Horror Picture Show

Since 1975, audiences have been thrilled and entranced by The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The film’s plot follows a couple who gets stranded in the woods late one night and stumble upon a mansion full of oddballs… and just gets weirder from there. The movie has gained fame for its midnight showings around the world, which feature call and response lines, singing and dancing along, and bringing your own props.

Escape Rooms

Over the past couple of years, escape rooms have skyrocketed in popularity. These immersive live action rooms give participants the change to solve puzzles, connect clues, and find a way to beat the clock. There are many different kinds of escape rooms, each with their own themes: historical, sci-fi, criminal, etc. The Escape Game Chicago offers escape adventures such as prison break, Gold Rush, and an art museum heist, while Fox in a Box Chicago has Cold War, serial killer, and bank robbing rooms.

Harry Potter Magic at Play

No need to catch the Hogwarts Express to visit the magical world of Harry Potter. This November, it will visit Chicago’s Water Tower Place in the form of an explorative magical adventure. Magic at Play is a hands-on experience that promises to be loads of fun whether you’re a lifetime Potterhead or new to the series. Sipping on delicious Butterbeer and wandering through the three floors of wizardry is sure to be one of the most unique ways to enjoy the season.

Chicago’s premier Rocky Horror midnight theater is the Music Box Theatre, a delightfully grand movie house with ornate ceilings and details. The bizarre movie is made even more exciting by the shadowcast the Music Box provides. These are actors who act the film out on stage and around the theater while the movie is playing, truly making the night immersive. If you do decide to venture out to a midnight showing, be sure to do your research on what props to bring, costumes to wear, and songs to sing.

Athletic Association Game Room

Candlelight Experience

Whirlyball

While not completely unique to Chicago, there’s little chance you’ll find anywhere else to play the sport of Whirlyball. A unique blend of basketball, lacrosse, and bumper cars, Whirlyball is one way to compete against friends without needing to tire yourself out by running.

Nothing is cozier than candlelight, and Chicago’s Candlelight Concerts promise to be an immersive musical experience. With flickering candles adorning beautiful concert halls and repurposed venues, the series features music from a variety of genres and artists. Aretha Franklin, ABBA, Taylor Swift, and A Haunted Evening of Halloween Classics are just a few of the myriad of options one can choose from. And if you’re more of a traditionalist, don’t worry! There’s also a night dedicated to Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and other classical musicians. Info and tickets on the Candlelight Experience website.

One of the best secrets of downtown Chicago is the Athletic Association - today a one-of-a-kind hotel. Built during the post-Chicago fire architecture boom, the 1893 structure is ornate and castlelike. Located across from Millennium Park, the Association boasts a rooftop restaurant, microbar, drawing room, and Game Room. The Game Room, as the name suggests, offers shuffleboard, foosball, bocce, billiards, chess, checkers, and more. No matter your forte, there’s a way to show your friends you’re the best!

Ax Throwing

If you need a convenient and fun way to get some stress or anger out, consider visiting one of Chicago’s ax throwing bars. Whether you grab a drink or go alcohol-free, nothing compares to chucking an ax at a target, especially when you can beat your friends. Bad Axe Chicago is the most well known ax throwing location in the city, with locations in Lakeview and West Loop.

Mini Golf

Putt-putt can be fun in the summer, but playing inside offers a totally different experience. Big Mini Putt Club has 9-hole mini golf adorned with twists, turns, and a full bar. The well-designed course may only be 9 holes, but take your time and you’ll find plenty of fun. For a dark course with blacklights and bright neon colors, Glow Golf in Vernon Hills offers a less-adult golf feel.

IT’S THEATER SEASON AGAIN

Some of the Shows You Cannot Afford to Miss

WICKED

One of the most anticipated arrives at the Nederlander Theater this fall: Wicked! The delightfully thought-provoking and toe-tapping show takes the well-known story of The Wizard of Oz and turns it on its head. What if Dorothy, not the witch, was actually the bad guy? With famous songs like “Defying Gravity” and “Popular,” tickets will go fast, so be sure to snap them up while you can.

THE LION KING

It seems autumn in Chicago will be full of iconic performances. The Lion King is also slated to begin performances in November. Kids and adults alike can ogle the award-winning costumes and, of course, sing along to the emblematic songs from the Disney movie.

Both The Lion King and Wicked! are presented by Broadway in Chicago, the premier theater company in the city. They frequently offer discounts and special deals through their website and social media, including $25 on the 25th, which advertises $25 tickets to shows each 25th of the month.

THE THEATER WIT

For smaller alternatives, look at options outside the Loop. The Theater Wit in Lakeview is offering multiple shows in its many auditoriums this season, including Chagall in School, a comedy about artist Marc Chagall, STEW, a play focusing on secrecy and family, and The Locusts, a serial killer thriller.

THE STEPPENWOLF

And no theater lover’s time in Chicago would be complete without a visit to the famous Steppenwolf. While there are always a myriad of interesting shows happening at Steppenwolf, the Chicago premiere of The Most Spectacularly Lamentable Trial of Miz Martha Washington promises to make audiences think about the racist history of the country while also examining the myths surrounding the founding of America.

Haunted Halloween in Chicago

FIND THE CITY’S MOST BLOOD-CURDLING ATTRACTIONS

The Catacombs

One of smaller and least expensive haunted house options lies within an unassuming church on the north side of the city. Every October for over 40 years, St. Pascal Church transforms its basement into The Catacombs, where ghosts, monsters, ghouls and other dangers lurk. Don’t be fooled by the pious nature of the building: supposedly, the supernatural barrier keeping the ghostly evils away from visitors for the rest of year collapses during the spooky season, leaving everyone at risk for a fright.

Six Flags Great America Fright Fest

Even for adrenaline junkies who don’t happen to enjoy roller coasters, Six Flags Great America will have something for everyone this season. In September and October, the whole park will be transformed in accordance with Halloween. This is one of the biggest haunted house attractions in the area, as Fright Fest boasts six haunted houses with different themes, nine “scare zones” with haunted walks and trail rides. You can’t miss the giant spider climbing the American Eagle roller coaster.

13th Floor

13th Floor is one of the largest Halloween-themed companies in the country, so it’s no wonder their attractions consistently terrify customers, such as last year’s fight between vampires and werewolves. Themes for the houses change each year, so be sure to keep an eye out: Once the themes are released, tickets will go fast!

The Old Joliet Haunted Prison

The famous prison featured in The Blues Brothers invites Halloween fans to walk among the halls where infamous convicts such as John Wayne Gacy, Baby Face Nelson, and Leopold and Loeb where prisoned. In addition to the purely historical excitement, of course the building will also be made up to look even more abandoned than it has already become since its closure in 2002.

Basement of the Dead

If ghosts aren’t your thing, the town of Aurora will be hosting a Zombie Outbreak Apocalypse haunted house, where visitors will actually get the chance to fight back against the monsters. Part Halloween, part laser tag, this is an adventure well worth the admission price.

TAYLOR KINNEY’S TAYLOR KINNEY’S

Chicago Hot Spots

Fall means the start of a brand new television season, and for millions of people that means tuning in to season 11 of the NBC hit show Chicago Fire every Wednesday night. Many of those loyal viewers have been following the adventures of Lieutenant Kelly Severide since the pilot of the show. Needless to say that the actor portraying him has many fans across the globe. When we talked to him about his favorite Chicago things, Taylor Kinney shared his go-to restaurants and favorite dishes in Chicago’s West Loop.

Viaggio recently moved a few blocks to a brand new location, right in the heart of the West Loop. The popular AmericanItalian restaurant has been a neighborhood favorite for many years. Taylor Kinney who resides in the area loves hanging out at Viaggio's with friends or with his girlfriend. His favorite dish here: Chicken Limone, chicken breast sautéed with lemon butter in a white wine sauce.

Chicken Quesadillas at G-Cue Billiards & Restaurant

Across the street from Viaggio’s, Taylor loves to enjoy James Beard Award winning chef Sarah Grueneberg’s own version of the classic Cacio e Pepe, the Cacio Whey Pepe. The ingredients are simple yet delicious: mancini bucatini, pecorino medoro, ricotta whey, and a peppercorn blend.

If you love Chef Sarah’s cuisine, keep an eye out for her very first cookbook ‘Listen To Your Vegetables’, launching this fall.

Gyros at Lyra

This classic West Loop pool hall has been around for 18 years and is still owned and operated by the same family. Before or after a game of pool or two, Taylor enjoys the Three Cheese Quesadillas with Chicken at G-Cue: a folded flour tortilla stuffed with mozzarella, swiss, cheddar and chicken. The quesadillas are served with the traditional salsa and sour cream.

Lyra is not just a contemporary Greek restaurant, it is an experience like no other. Lyra has great dishes for both carnivores and vegetarians alike, all served in a stunning decor. If you happen to stop by after 11 pm on weekends, there will be deejays and largeformat cocktails as well. Taylor’s favorite dish is the slow-roasted lamb gyros, carved tableside and served with a 60 second pita and all the classic Athenian accouterments.

The draft menu changes 4-6 times a week with always seasonally appropriate selections. You can easily check the draft menu online. Another essential is Monk’s Pub in the Loop. Same thing here: check the draft menu on their website and try one of the many European drafts or bottles. Both places offer excellent food, as well.

OKTüBERFEST SANDWICH

Hannah's Bretzel is bringing back their annual Oktüberfest sandwich, featuring Gene’s German bratwurst, Mama Nina’s Bavarian beer-braised sauerkraut, whole grain honey mustard, and Hannah’s caramelized onions on their classic organic bretzel baguette.

MEGA PRETZEL

Why not celebrate Oktoberfest with the 2-pound shareable Mega Pretzel at the FireLake Grill House & Cocktailbar? Served with beer cheese and honey mustard dipping sauce, this is a must-try! And while there, you might just as well try the housemade smoked sausage with caramelized onion and pepper dipped in spicy tomato sauce, right? Needless to say, there’s plenty of beer to pair with these festive dishes.

LOOSEN UP THE LEDERHOSEN

If you are not counting calories, try the special Oktoberfest menus at Sweetwater, South Branch, and all three Old Town Pour House locations: Smokehouse Currywurst with bacon braised sauerkraut, Crispy Pork Belly Spaetzle basted in brown butter, or Pork Schnitzel with warm potato salad, to name just a few. With a stellar selection of fall beers on tap at all locations, Oktoberfest-ers will be sure to get their fill of seasonal beer favorites, as well!

OLD WORLD HERITAGE

Old World charm and heritage meet modern appeal in the Lincoln Square neighborhood. Explore the cobblestone stretch of Lincoln Avenue and discover unique shops such as Merz Apothecary or Gene’s Sausage Shop & Deli. Have a beer and a bite at the Hüttenbar Bavarian beer hall. SIX OF OUR FAVORITE BREWERIES & BREWPUBS IN THE CITY

HISTORICAL

Interested in Chicago history and thirsty for a good beer? Try Haymarket Pub & Brewery in the West Loop. While enjoying a Speakerswagon Pilsner or the Oscar’s Pardon Belgian-style Pale Ale, learn more about the Haymarket affair, the aftermath of a bombing that took place at a labor demonstration on May 4, 1886. After quenching your thirst, visit the Haymarket Monument, located across the expressway.

LOCAL & COOL

There are four more breweries located in Chicago’s Brewing District. One of our favorites is local microbrewery On Tour, where house beers are poured in a warehouse-like tasting room. Other breweries in the Brewing District include Finch, All Rise, and Great Central. You may just as well make this a day trip destination!

RIVER VIEWS & BINGO

Located next to the river, Metropolitan Brewing offers house beers in their tap room or riverside patio. You can order or bring your own food. Mark your calendars for Wednesday night Bingo!

MICHELIN STARRED

The world’s first brewery awarded with not one but two Michelin stars may be found right here in Chicago! Moody Tongue offers exciting beers that blend familiar flavors with quality ingredients through a philosophy of culinary brewing. In their own words: they are using a chef’s mindset to highlight flavors and aromatics in balanced beers. Make sure to book a table if you plan on pairing your beer with a fine dining experience.

DOWNTOWN

Located in the heart of Streeterville, Crushed by Giants Brewing Company is the brainchild of Greg Shuff and his team at DryHop Brewers in East Lakeview. Definitely try their IPAs and locally sourced food.

WORLD FAMOUS

Head over to the Chicago Brewing District on the Near West Side and visit the brewery that has been brewing the–now world famous–Goose Island beers since 1995. Book your guided tours in advance, have a few beers, and check out the merch.

Holiday Shopping

FINDING THE PERFECT HOLIDAY GIFTS

Andersonville

Block 37

The Magnificent Mile

The Mag Mile is one of the most famous shopping areas in the country. With over a mile of stores located just steps from the Loop, the stretch of Michigan Avenue is the perfect stop for anyone looking for an expensive gift for a special someone. As an added bonus, if you go in November, you’ll be able to admire the beautiful holiday lights that adorn the streetlights and buildings.

Like the Magnificent Mile, Clark Street in Andersonville offers a long stretch of stores. Unlike the Mag Mile, Clark Street has a cozier feel, will most definitely not be as crowded as downtown, and stores offer less costly and more unique options. Foursided is an artistic card, poster, and trinket store with an assortment of items for sale. The Brown Elephant is an adventure, not just for the beautiful setting within an old theater, but also for the thrifted clothing, books, and furniture.

While the Loop area is close to the Mag Mile, if you’re looking for an indoor option to avoid the cold, Block 37 is there for you. Anthropologie, Sephora, and Zara are located within the sleek building, with easy access from the Blue and Red Lines. You don’t even need to step foot outdoors!

The HIP

For something more mainstream than Andersonville but not quite as pricey as the Mag Mile, the Harlem Irving Plaza is an indoor mall on the northwest side that has all your holiday shopping needs. From Hot Topic and Forever 21 to Kohl’s and Target, it’s a great one stop shop for the busy gift giver. Although it’s located fairly far from the city center, this also means the crowds aren’t nearly as large, making holiday shopping much less stressful.

Wicker Park

This up and coming neighborhood is easy to love, and the long walk along Milwaukee Ave will get you to some truly quirky stores. Transit Tees is a great start for anyone looking to give a gift to a Chicago native, as it carries merchandise for very specific Chicago niches (think parking tickets, El lines, and neighborhoods). The Buffalo Exchange carries retro clothes, and Myopic Books is a onestop shop for all your reading needs.

Ukrainian / East Village

For some quintessential neighborhood charm while you shop, you can’t miss Ukrainian Village and its neighbor, East Village. Ukrainian immigrants settled in this part of Chicago in the early 20th century. Most have moved on but the neighborhood retains its distinctive relaxed yet lively energy. Check out RR #1, a gift shop selling wonderfully quirky items in a restored 1930s pharmacy. For the plant lover in your life, Plant Salon is filled with houseplants and everything one needs to grow a green thumb.
