OUR LEAGUE STORY: PERSONAL SUPPORTS

Joe (a k a Mr Wolf) and his support counselor Robin do everything together From cleaning the facilities of Community Assistance Network (CAN), to cooking homemade meals, to nursing abandoned baby squirrels, the pair really complement each other and seize opportunities to make each day meaningful while in the community

Robin will start the day by picking Joe up from his independent living home Once the two have enjoyed their morning java, they head over to CAN in Dundalk where Joe dons his neon yellow League safety vest and collects his cleaning supplies from the utility closet, ready to get to work For approximately three hours, Joe and Robin clean their way through the facility and check tasks off of their to-do list As part of Joe’s daily routine, he cleans the administrative restrooms, vacuums the shared conference room space, washes the windows, and tidies the produce shelves Robin does an excellent job of encouraging Joe and keeping him focused on his volunteer duties with intermittent dance breaks because who doesn’t like to Travolta and walk like an Egyptian while cleaning?

With all of their cleaning tasks complete, Joe empties the trash in the dumpster and packs up his supplies The dynamic duo say their goodbyes to the folks at CAN and head out to get some lunch Sometimes, the pair will frequent their favorite local restaurant and other times, Robin plans a hands-on culinary experience where they explore different recipes from deli sandwiches to lasagna in her kitchen The rest of their afternoon is usually spent hanging out at the park on beautiful days, shopping to restock their cleaning supplies, or creating unique costume disguises for the very versatile Mr Wolf It is important to Joe and Robin that their afternoon activities provide structure and permit ample fun before Robin drops Joe off at the end of the day

Becoming a one-to-one support counselor for an adult with developmental disabilities was a major career shift for Robin Since working with Joe for nearly 9 months, Robin says she would never go back to retail work, becoming emotional and shedding a tear at the thought of leaving Joe According to Robin, “he’s a huge part of my life now just as much as I am a part of his ” Joe and Robin have developed an unshakable bond and struck an appropriate balance between work and play Joe’s volunteerism at CAN and Robin’s passion, patience, and creativity are a winning combination for everyone Together, we are abl to strengthen our interpersonal and community relationships Together, we are able

2022 ANNUAL REPORT 2 |

The League for People with Disabilities is proud to partner with organizations like Community Assistance Network (CAN) as we endeavor to promote a society of accessibility and equity. Established in 1956 as part of a national network of over 1,000 Community Action Agencies, CAN partners with the broader community to develop, operate, and support programs that reduce vulnerability and empower personal growth, dignity, stability, and self-sufficiency among Baltimore County residents experiencing economic challenges. CAN provides after school programming, budget counseling, food accessibility, homeless shelters and housing services, and outreach programs.

We are partners in happiness. Joe brings out the inner child in me.
-Robin, Personal Supports Counselor
Our friends at The League are near and dear to us - every individual has his or her own ability. We have the space within the community where we are happy to help and also give back with employment and training opportunities.
-Carla Schroyer, Food Pantry Manager at Community Assistance Network

OUR LEAGUE STORY: EMPLOYMENT SERVICES

Greg and Jacob are “brothers from other mothers” and have been inseparable since the age of 2 years old Greg is extremely protective of Jacob; he helps Jacob become more articulate despite a slight stutter and even books Jacob’s mobility rides and manages transportation details for both of them to get around in the community The young men visit The Wellness Center Monday through Thursday to work out and swim laps in the heated pool as an added benefit of participating in The League's Employment Services Program Their weekends are reserved for working at Cinemark where they have been employed for the past 7 years

The friendship between Greg and Jacob has prevailed through school, volunteer work, employment at 7 different jobs, years of competitive sports, and several major surgeries “He makes me a better person,” says Greg about Jacob

Greg has over thirty awards and medals from competing in various sports such as swimming, soccer, track and field, sit-skiing, softball, and wrestling at the Special Olympics He remains humble, like his Jamaican idol Usain Bolt, and shares a love of all sports and challenges with his best friend, Jacob

Working as ushers at the movie theater in Towson provides Greg and Jacob with plenty of opportunities to meet new people and appreciate the films that bring joy to so many cinephiles They have pushed each other to be strong and independent and enjoy gaming with their PlayStation 5’s (proudly bought with their earned wages). Together, we are abl to empower individuals with disabilities as they work towards gratifying autonomy.

Together, we are able

THE WELLNESS CENTER

Like League participants Greg and Jacob, community members can achieve their health and fitness goals at The Wellness Center Almost a decade ago, a very close friend introduced Leroy to The Wellness Center at The League With an accessible parking lot, variety of equipment, and abundance of encouraging energy available, he has not stepped foot in another gym since Leroy starts with the exercise bike and takes his time with each of the machines to maximize the benefits of his workouts

Born and raised in a loving household, Leroy loves his family and hometown of Baltimore He maintains that you should treat your neighbors in the same manner that you wish to be treated and conducts himself with respect, empathy, and compassion "because you never know what another person might be going through " At The Wellness Center, Leroy enjoys the positivity from the staff and his fellow members Everyone there is on their own personal wellness journey and Leroy is grateful to share the space with some truly incredible individuals According to Leroy, a person’s health can be humbling Whether there is a young man in a wheelchair lifting weights, a retired woman attending a water aerobics class, or a 57year-old man easing his way back into his fitness routine after a hernia surgery, each individual in The Wellness Center is working hard to extend and improve the quality of his or her life

A wellness journey is vital for everyone and while there are many places to go to exercise, The League’s Wellness Center offers a helpful, positive, and patient atmosphere with so many great assets that make it superior as a wholistic wellness experience. Leroy admits that with age, he may walk a little slower but it is important that he is still looking forward and has a support system of “perfectly imperfect people” to motivate him. Together, we are to encourage others to be the best version of themselves. Together, we are able

OUR LEAGUE STORY: THE ZERWITZ FAMILY

Judy served on The League’s Board of Directors from 2011 to 2017. She suffered from a stroke in 2014 and participated in programming at The Snyder Center for Aphasia Life Enhancement (SCALE) where she became friends with many other stroke survivors and began her recovery. In November of 2014, SCALE merged with The League for People with

Judy and Arnold have visited Camp Greentop in the Catoctin Mountains during the summer and recommend the experience to everyone. But the program that is dearest to their hearts takes place at The League on the second Saturday of every month: CLUB1111. The pair is typically assigned to the merchandise table where they delight in selling t-shirts, hats, flower crowns, and light-up jewelry to the excited club-goers. For them, CLUB1111 is a wonderful event where people of all abilities come to build lasting friendships. OUR LEAGUE STORY: AMAZON BWI

Two years ago, the passion of an employee prompted Amazon BWI to donate to The League for People with Disabilities Though the employee has moved on, The League’s relationship with Amazon has expanded to include sizable monetary donations, in-kind donations, and a steady supply of eager volunteers

While Amazon’s culture is built around solving impossible problems, the hyper locality of Amazon BWI has allowed them to leverage their scale for good and use their ability to innovate quickly to strengthen communities in Baltimore where their employees live and work Amazon BWI focuses on assisting the populations and neighborhoods of Baltimore with the least amount of resources They log an average of 1,000 hours of volunteer work a month and employ a diverse team of people of various races, languages, and abilities

Amazon volunteer work with The League involves lots of collaboration, creativity, and assistance during weekly Art Therapy sessions. The participants in the Adult Medical Day Program enjoy conversing and connecting with the volunteers as they complete artistic projects together. There is a palpable sense of camaraderie and purpose when the Amazon volunteers come to visit. In December, Amazon volunteers spread some holiday cheer by visiting The League to wrap participant gifts for the Holiday Drive.

The League is grateful for the generosity of Amazon BWI’s employee resource groups that continue to champion our mission and align their philanthropic giving with our goals to build long-term, innovative programs that have a lasting, positive impact on the community. Together, we are to improve the lives of Baltimore residents and promote accessible and equitable opportunities for growth in the community.

MY SON IS THRIVING AT

Matthew brings such friendliness and energy to the group every time he is volunteering. Everyone knows and likes him! The coordinator feels Matthew will naturally blend in with his positive attitude and interest in the people at Helping Up Mission.

I am grateful that Matthew has Personal Supports in his individual plan. Without it, these beneficial opportunities would not exist. Towanda deserves a huge SHOUT-OUT! She is the perfect companion for Matthew. We communicate regularly, she offers helpful suggestions to me, she understands Matthew’s challenges, and is very flexible with her schedule. [She] is always very patient and kind to Matthew. They go to the Planet Fitness Gym, go shopping, run errands, etc. She is teaching Matthew very important life skills, such as waiting in line and staying organized. Yesterday, Towanda took Matthew for a haircut, helped him count out the money, and explained inclu more awesome ways that Towanda is helping Matthew. Sh appreciative of her commitment to Matthew.

Thanks so much for this incredible service for Matthew.

Sincerely,

!
