A.C.E. Night—Night Circus Our Annual Charity Event is upon us! On March 13, there will be live and silent auctions, Wine Bottle Ring Toss, Jumbo Plinko, Dessert Dash, and Heads or Tails to win the Booze Wagon. While mingling at the event, you might experience magic tricks, a bendy woman and a snake charmer. If you have not purchased your ticket, go ahead and do that soon. You might want to grab a friend to join you too! Many members and attendees have been planning their costumes and are anxious to don them for the event. The word is there will be some showmen and women, the human cannonball and maybe even the world’s strongest man! There is still a need for day-of volunteers to help shuttle auction items to the event site and to decorate the event space. If you are available to help, email April. We look forward to seeing you at the biggest event of the year! All proceeds from this event go toward Community Grants and the Claire Marsh Scholarship which is awarded to a spouse continuing their education. Please see more information regarding Grants and Scholarships on the last page of the newsletter.

Nerf Wars Nerf Wars is returning April 18. This event is for ages 5-12 with parents having an opportunity to join in the fun for the last 30 minutes. Check in begins at 11:00am, playing from 11:30-1:00pm and eating pizza and a cookie at 1:00pm. The event will be held at the Lewis School Age Center on Lewis North. The cost to play is $10. All players must provide their own protective glasses and compatible Nerf gun. Nerf bullets will be provided. A parent/guardian is required to stay for the duration of child(ren)’s playtime. A waiver is required for all participants. Hope to see you there! Email Melissa with any questions you have regarding the event.

Operation Deploy Your Dress We are lucky to have Operation Deploy Your Dress (ODYD) here at JBLM. ODYD is a donation-based, volunteer-run nonprofit organization that collects new and gently used formal attire to “deploy” free of cost to military and dependent ID cardholders. This includes school-aged dependents needing Homecoming or Prom attire. Hours for the shop vary by month and are always posted on the “JBLM - Operation Deploy Your Dress” Facebook Page. The success of this shop is dependent on volunteers helping in two-hour shifts to outfit customers. The shifts include weekdays, one Saturday and one evening per month to help vary the open hours for customers. Duties include greeting customers, helping them select dresses, unpacking donations, organizing displays, and putting dresses away after try-ons. If you are interested in helping for the month of March, sign up here. You can also email Anna to be added to the email list to receive future sign ups. In order to have dresses on the racks, donations are always accepted. Gently used formal attire– gowns, cocktail dresses, shoes, and accessories– are always accepted during shop hours. We look forward to seeing you in the shop as a customer or volunteer!

Board Positions

Scholarship Opportunity

It is already time to begin thinking about your interest in serving on the LCSC Executive Board for 2020-2021. Contact Julie if you are interested or would like more information. You can see job descriptions here.

LCSC is a large donor to the Fort Lewis Family Member Scholarship Fund each year. In the past this scholarship fund has given to family members of the Army. This year, they are opening their eligibility to include dependents of any service member assigned to or retired from JBLM. You can see all the details regarding their eligibility here. Applications are open for high school seniors, students continuing education and spouses. The fund awards scholarships to those working toward their first Bachelors degree. The application deadline is March 16, 2020.

Community Grants The Lewis Community Spouses’ Club raises money throughout the year in an effort to provide monetary support to local and national organizations and charities via the Community Grants Program. Funds are given as grants to on- and off-post organizations that serve military members and their families on JBLM and surrounding communities. Last year the Club raised approximately $37,000 at our Annual Charity Event (A.C.E. Night) and this money helped fund the Grants program. Because of the participation and generosity of our Club members, we were able to give to the Fort Lewis Family Member Scholarship Fund, multiple Lakes High School athletic teams, the Children’s Museum of Tacoma, Operation Homefront, Dogs on Deployment, SafePlace, Wear Blue: Run to Remember, the Buffalo Soldiers Museum, multiple Boy Scout troops and many more.

In the past five years, the fund has given out $190,000 to 144 recipients. Here you can read an article written by an LCSC member about last year’s awardees. If you have any questions about the Fund, you can email them at ftlewisfamilyscholarship@gmail.com.

Applications will only be electronically accepted through March 25, 2020 by completing the Community Grants Application here. All applicants must be a non-profit organization. Please email if you have additional questions.
