The Summer Reading Program is underway with “An Ocean of Possibilities“ for kids aged 0-12, “Make Waves“ for teens and “Challenge Yourshelf“ for adults. Track your reading with Beanstack, an electronic reporting software that can be accessed using a mobile device, computer, or with the help of Library Staff, for a chance to win prizes.

Early Literacy

Give your child a head start on early literacy at Lambton County Library. Early literacy is what kids know about reading and writing before they can actually read and write. Lambton County Library offers a variety of programs that help foster early literacy, family literacy and lifelong learning.

Baby Rhyme Time

AGES 0 - 2

Learn new songs, activities and games that you can share with your baby and play a key role in your child’s development. This 30 minute story time includes movement games, rhymes, songs and stories to help your baby recognize colours, shapes, letters and numbers.

Makerspace Training

Receive one-on-one training on select Makerspace equipment at select library locations. Choose to be trained on the 3D Printer, Laser Cutter, Silhouette Cutter, Button Maker or Sewing Machine. Once trained you will be able to book time for independent use on the equipment. Registration required.

July 20 - Create your own book cover: Create a new book cover for your favourite book using whatever medium you choose. Experiment with paint, oil pastel, etc. to re-imagine your book’s cover.

July 25 - Weaving a seahorse with paper: Enjoy an ocean themed story while working on a seahorse craft.

July 28 - Reduce, reuse, & recycle ocean art: Reuse and recycle some everyday items to create this colourful ocean craft while listening to a story about keeping our oceans clean.

July 31 - Pirate spyglass: Create your own spyglass to help you and your band of pirates navigate the high seas!

August 18 - Build a pirate ship: Work on your fine motor skills and develop your problem solving while building your own pirate ship out of cardboard. Decorate your vessel however you want!

August 24 - Pirate head crafternoon: Design a wacky pirate head using your handprint!

Create a colour explosion and make fresh water from salt water. Kids can take part in two activities using water. The program will incorporate elements of S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics).

July 25 - Under the sea activity hour: Experience several Under the Sea activities such as fishing for sea creatures, bowling for an octopus, and, we will each be creating a jelly fish.

August 8 - Shiny foil fish: Listen to the book “Rainbow Fish” and create your own colourful shiny fish using cardstock, markers and tinfoil. We will also discover what whales sound like under the sea.

August 15 - Bubbly sea creatures: Discover some interesting facts about fish while we read a special book. We’ll then create a fun sea creature using soap bubbles to add colour and have a treasure hunt around the library.

Art Workshops

Explore different creative techniques with local artists and reimagine the cover of your favourite book! Submit your original artwork to the service desk at any Lambton County Library location from July 3 to September 2, 2023. All artwork entries will be displayed at Sarnia Library from September 9 to October 28. Six winning designs will be displayed at Gallery in the Grove’s upcoming exhibit featuring works by the Canadian Society of Children’s Authors, Illustrators and Performers (CANSCAIP). The Grand prize winners in each age category will be awarded an Art Kit (valued at $50) and four runners-up (two from each age category) will receive a book prize pack.

Stargazing Party

ALL AGES

Before GPS navigation and maps, explorers and travelers used the night sky to navigate. Learn how to recognize navigational stars, constellations and planets in our own night sky. Sarnia Astronomical Society members will provide telescopes and assistance for viewing various celestial bodies in the night sky and will conduct a tour of the night sky at 10:00 p.m. Stay from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. or drop-in for a short time.

In order to facilitate optimal viewing of the sky, lighting at the venue will be very low. Please be prepared to navigate in the dark.

It is recommended that you dress for cooler weather and bring a blanket or lawn chair to sit on.

Please note: If the weather is not favourable for the event it may be rescheduled to a later date.
