SUMMER 2025

WHO WE ARE

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT THE BOARD

Fellow Members:

I hope and trust that you all had a safe and peaceful offseason. As we approach another summer on our beautiful island, I wanted to recount what we accomplished over the past twelve months and update you about what we have in store for the summer of 2025.

When you arrive at the Foundation, you will notice that our camp building has a brand-new A-frame roof (replacing the old flat roof) and exterior staircase. We chose this design for a number of reasons. First, it is more visually appealing. Second, the A-frame enables the roof to shed water completely, as opposed to the flat roof which retained water that would bake in the sun. This will extend the useful life of the roof while minimizing ongoing maintenance. Finally, the A-frame design allows us to install HVAC units in the roof attic, making the building usable year-round with heating and cooling capabilities.

This roof project is the single biggest capital project undertaken by the LBIF in at least 25 years. It would not have been possible without the extreme generosity and support of the members who contributed to our Annual Appeal, as well as the interest earned on our endowment fund, which Blai members Ken Stein and Sandy Strine generously donated to a significant extent. That generosity enabled us to fund the project without having to incur a nickel of debt.

As we enter 2025, we are seeing:

· Continued membership growth, including our Blai and Tennis Memberships.

· Thriving summer camp enrollment because of expanded offerings and contemporary curricula.

· Expanded business and community relationships.

· New grant awards, including awards from the Ocean County Cultural Heritage, William S. Paley Foundation, New Jersey Cultural Trust, Ocean County Tourism Marketing Grant, and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

· A record number of art exhibitions, films, concerts, and social events.

o May: Works on Paper 2025

o June 4-8: Lighthouse International Film Festival

o July: 40 Under 40 juried exhibition

o July: One Night Only, a gala event supporting and showcasing our talented local artists

o August 6: House Tour

o August: Member/Student/Faculty Exhibition

o September: Plein Air Plus 2025

o Fabulous fun family programs

o Children’s specialty camps, including Cheerleading, Theater Camp, Contemporary Dance, Singing Songbirds Camp, Fishing Camp, and Tennis Camp, to name just a few.

In addition, for those of you who play Tennis and Pickleball, Brett, Tom, and Kristen have brought a real passion and member-centric attitude to our facilities. Their focus on the member experience was a breath of fresh air and they continue to be desirous of doing everything they can to making the LBIF the premier tennis operation on the Island.

I have previously described our Ceramics Studio as a “hidden gem,” with its state-of-the-art kilns and facilities for experienced and beginner potters alike. Over the past year, however, the expanded offerings and classes have “outed” our Studio. Its increasingly welcoming environment continues to encourage beginners and experts alike to stop in to learn more about such a fascinating art form. We expanded our staffing in the ceramics studio, so I encourage you to stop by and speak to Jeff, Christina and some of our ceramics residents about everything that our facility has to offer.

My main priority for 2025 remains growth; growth in our membership; growth in our fundraising; and growth in our offerings.

Our members are the lifeblood of the Foundation. We cannot sustain this organization without a growing and vibrant membership. And that doesn’t just mean more dues. It means members that want to come to the Foundation to experience all that it has to offer, whether cultural, educational, athletic or otherwise. If visitors see a place with a lot going on, engaging a welcoming community that provides quality services and enjoyable programming, they will want to be here. That’s how we will grow our membership.

So I would ask each of you to encourage your friends and neighbors to become Foundation members—especially young families that can become generational contributors to our LBIF community. Educate them about all the Foundation has to offer for people of all ages. Bring them to the Foundation to visit. Invite them to attend a concert, view an art show, play Tennis or Pickleball, or try their hand at Ceramics. Direct them to our website so that they can see for themselves all that we have to offer. I know that if we can engage with them at some level, we can persuade them to join us as members.

Finally, fundraising is critical to the sustainability of the Foundation. Membership dues, Tennis and Camp revenue contribute to our operating budget, but capital improvements are only possible through the generosity of our members. We sincerely thank those families who have made gifts to the Foundation in addition to their yearly dues and we hope you will continue to keep us in mind during our next Annual Appeal.

As I look forward to the 2025 summer season, I would encourage and challenge you to do something, whether large or small, to ensure an even brighter future for the Foundation. Everyone can contribute in some way, whether financially or in less tangible ways.

I am extremely proud of what we have been able to accomplish over the past few years. We have returned the Foundation to a stable fiscal footing and I remain confident that we are well positioned to flourish for years to come. Here’s wishing you all a safe and healthy 2025 and another wonderful LBI summer.

In closing, I encourage all of you to take a few seconds to thank our staff when you are visiting the Foundation. It is their hard work and dedication that keeps the Foundation the vibrant cultural center that it is today.

LBIF HISTORY

Founded in 1948 by Boris Blai, the LBIF is an outstanding community cultural center. Blai, a student of the sculptor Auguste Rodin, and the founding Dean of The Tyler School of Art, Temple University, envisioned a unique facility that would foster individuals, and their talents, while enjoying summertime at the Jersey shore.

Boris Blai was born in 1893 in Rivne, Russia, and received his early training in sculpture and painting at the Kiev and Leningrad Imperial Academies. In 1912 Blai arrived in Paris to study at the Ecole des Beaux Arts with Emile-Antoine Bourdelle and Auguste Rodin, later becoming an assistant to the master sculptor, Rodin. Blai also studied bronze casting and portrait painting in Munich. After coming to America, in 1927 Blai secured his first teaching position at the Oak Lane Country Day School in Philadelphia. In 1935 he founded The Tyler School of Art, Temple University’s degree granting art school located in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania where he remained Dean until his retirement in 1960.

The LBIF has continued Blai’s vision by offering thousands of classes, workshops, exhibitions, and educational programs to the community. Since its first season, the LBIF has committed itself to the enhancement of the creative arts and the physical sciences. Though it began as a seasonal operation, the LBIF has grown into a year-round organization providing a place for learning, free expression, new experiences, and the exchange of ideas and understanding.

Celebrating LBIF’s 75th anniversary in 2023, we recognized our past Presidents, who along with their board of trustees, staff, members, volunteers, and supporters have enabled the LBIF to remain the cultural anchor of this region. To mark this milestone, we recognized these Presidents who gave of their time, vision and wisdom to sustain LBIF and its priceless 22-acre campus.

We thank Julie Berkowitz for her book, The Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences - A History: 1947 - 2014, available for purchase at LBIF.

TO OUR COMMUNITY

It is because of Boris Blai, an artist, educator, and pioneer, who had the vision to create this special campus and made possible what we enjoy today. In 1948, he built and named these 22+ acres “The Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences,” a concept that goes back to Leonardo da Vinci who is history’s ultimate example of exploring the symbiotic relationship between the arts and sciences.

Over the years I have sought out Blai’s remaining family, his friends and colleagues to document his accomplishments and to honor his legacy. As a community, our mission must be to preserve his gift of this magnificent mid-century modern building designed by George Daub, arts and science studios, and a native landscape that offers tranquility through its natural coastal beauty. Preservation is now more important than ever before.

I was fortunate to receive audio tapes of an interview Blai gave (from the 1950’s) from Blai’s grandson Adam. Blai’s words offer a glimpse of his vision and ideas of what the LBIF represented to him from its inception and founding in 1948.

An excerpt from this oral history, Boris Blai (a Russian immigrant) remarked:

“…I had an idea that we should create a cultural city — a city of business, art, education — and people who would like to come and live in an environment like this could be very helpful to each other… I am working now on that — to have a settlement right by the sea. …And arriving there, the immigrants, right next to it, establish a city with culture, school, retired people, who already been through in the scientific world, business world, art world, and maybe with all these accumulations of great knowledge, of our contemporary knowledge, what comes out sometimes is great work of art. Some man, maybe my students, maybe my student’s student, maybe my great grandchild will be able to create that thing.”

I would like to believe that for Boris Blai, that the “cultural city by the sea” he spoke of creating was the Foundation. We are the stewards of Boris Blai’s vision and keepers of his legacy. I am eternally grateful for his grand accomplishment in creating a unique campus dedicated to the arts and the sciences, on a barrier island no less! I am also grateful to the people of his generation who supported this vision and made it happen.

I wish to acknowledge the seven decades of Board members, volunteers, members, artists, scientists, and teachers who championed the mission of the LBIF as a cultural anchor of LBI and as a center for creativity and education for all age groups. I wish to thank our current Board members whose commitment and talents continue to contribute to our stability and direction.

Thank you to our wonderful, creative, talented, and dedicated staff. Our youth camp staff is exceptional, the team who create and communicate our many social and educational events are brilliant, and our very active recreational staff are passionate masters! The dedicated work of the many Chairs and Committee members; the Art Committee, Science Committee, Performing Arts Committee, House Tour Committee, to name a few, cannot be overlooked. The hundreds of volunteers, and particularly our annual House Tour volunteers, make all these events and programs found in these pages possible.

Thanks to the business community who we value and partner with in complimentary ways. Thank you to our non-profit partners in the sciences and the arts who help us build a stronger community with our shared interests. Thanks to our visitors who come through our doors, year-round. I hope you return again and again. And finally, a sincere thank you to all our members and their families, both our longtime members and our new members, who keep the LBIF alive and thriving each year because of their commitment, involvement, support, and love of the LBIF

Our community is our lifeblood, year-round, and it is your continued support that sustains the Foundation. It is up to us to protect and maintain this gift from Blai; now and for future generations. As beneficiaries, please join me to continue to build a bright, exciting, innovative, and inspired future.

My very best wishes to all for a wonderful summer, Daniella Kerner

Fee $50 for two-day workshop

Join us for a two-day portrait workshop, taught by award winning portrait artist Edgar Jerins. This two-day workshop will focus on capturing a likeness by understanding the proper placement of the features, likeness and shading. Day two will focus on artists refining their drawings, rendering hair, and adding color if they choose. Medium of choice is welcome; drawing is preferred. All skill levels welcome, from beginner to advanced. Bring your own art supplies.

ABOUT Edgar Jerins

Edgar Jerins began his training as an artist at age 14. By 18 he won a scholarship to the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. At the time of his graduation in 1980, Jerins had won several of the school’s awards. That same year, he won the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant, an international award for Realist artists. The grant enabled Jerins to travel to Los Angeles where he continued to perfect his exacting realism, often as portraits in oil pastel. Edgar Jerins looks deep into the struggling souls of troubled people; he lays bare their uneasy relationships and harnesses their despair into sublime works of art. The subjects of Edgar Jerins’ monumental charcoal drawings, some over eight feet in width, are often his friends and relatives—people whose lives touch the artist directly.

After raising a family and a long career in real estate, Kathleen went back to school for Fine Arts to create a livelihood that involved more active freeform experiences; a dramatic departure from the detail-oriented demands of business. Nature and the environment have always been an important lifestyle focus for Kathleen, who has sought to work to preserve the environment in some way. She produces all of her work with this in mind. As a print and paper maker, Kathleen has spent much of her artistic explorations employing low and non-toxic methods within these two compatible disciplines. Eco printing allows her to create monotype style prints on the garments using the shape and dye within the actual botanicals used in the design. There is little trash and no toxic waste generated in the process.

SCIENCE

We are proud to continue our partnership with the Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey (CWF) that will help support and strengthen our science based initiatives with emphasis on rare wildlife, including wildlife surveys, habitat management, and public outreach. Activities include migratory and nesting bird surveys, northern diamondback terrapin monitoring, and wildlife habitat enhancement.

CWF will provide wildlife-focused summer camps led by the biologists who carry out the organization’s mission to preserve rare and atrisk wildlife in New Jersey. We will work together to ensure that LBI is a sustainable home for vulnerable wildlife species, and a place whose residents and visitors are engaged in the natural world around them.

Estuaries and their surrounding wetlands help stabilize shorelines, protect inland habitats, and defend human property from coastal flooding and sea level rise. They also play an important role in reducing climate change, as they act as a carbon sink. Although when coastal wetlands are damaged, their ability to sequester carbon can be lost. In the coming years and decades, our salt marshes will be on the front line of a rising sea. Every action to reduce our environmental impact today, will increase the chance that places like this will be around for future generations to visit and admire.
