La liquirizia (Glycyrrhiza glabra) è una pianta erbacea perenne alta fino a un metro appartenente alla famiglia delle Leguminose.

La Glycyrrhiza glabra , comunemente detta liquirizia, deve il suo nome principalmente alla sua piacevolezza al gusto infatti la sua denominazione deriva dall’unione della parola greca glycos , cioè dolce con la parola, sempre greca,rhizos cioè radice indicando quindi una “radice dolce”. Già nota nell’antichità viene nominata anche da Teofrasto che la chiama radice di Siria od anche Scithica riferendosi all’ampio uso che di essa sembra facessero gli Sciti.

La discrezione della materia protagonista.

La forza della materia si può esprimere attraverso la potenza del mimetismo?

Sì, è quello che ho cercato di fare.

La forza e la potenza di per sé non mi interessano, sono secondarie, anche se possono servire ad attirare sguardi.

Cerco invece l’eleganza e il poter dare una diversa lettura a ciò che si pensa di conoscere già. I ‘cretti’ e le plastiche di Burri, la Cappella di Rothko a Houston, i carboni di Cavellini, li ho tutti interiorizzati e amati, cercando sempre di tenere a mente la raffinatezza del grande fotografo Hiroshi Sugimoto.

L'imperfezione è un elemento imprescindibile della natura umana, un piccolo-macro elefante di liquirizia nera con le orecchie bucherellate, come un piccolo fossile, può esprimere gli aspetti dell'uomo e delle sue innumerevoli sfaccettature ?

Ho scelto di chiamare la serie delle liquirizie ‘boogeybeasts’ gioco di parole che deriva da ‘boogeyman’, equivalente inglese del nostro Babau, essere fantastico che popola il buio e le nostre (forse non più le vostre, ma sicuramente ancora le mie) paure notturne. Un modo figurativo per esprimere la parte più buia e animale dell’animo umano che svanisce non appena si realizza che l’immagine è quella di un innocuo animaletto di liquirizia. E allora i ruoli si invertono : lo spettatore diventa l’oscuro da temere che divora il boogeybeast.

Le liquirizie gommose mi hanno sempre affascinato più per il loro aspetto e la loro materia che per il loro gusto (non le mangio). Ho voluto associare il loro aspetto dalle forme più o meno leggibili e difettose a quelle dei reperti antichi, di frammenti trovati negli scavi così rendendole atemporali e un po’ misteriose.

Cosa nasce dalla scelta di usare materiale vivo, mutevole, decomponibile, al tempo stesso ironico, al limite del gioco, come se fossimo in un Luna Park, o in un negozio Candy?

Spesso fotografo ‘junk’, in questo caso ‘junk food’ – cibo spazzatura.

Sono affascinata dagli scarti, non tutti, ma tanti sì.

Cerco il riscatto dello scarto, di renderlo altro, di cambiargli l’etichettatura scontata a cui è destinato. Uso l’ironia, il gioco, perché preferisco la leggerezza come mezzo espressivo.

Can the strength of a material be expressed through the power of mimicry?

Yes, that's what I’m trying to work on.

Strength and power do not interest me in themselves, they are secondary, although they may be useful to draw the attention. I’m looking for elegance, instead: a possibility to give a different interpretation to what you think you already know.

I interiorized and loved Burri’s 'cracks' and plastics, Rothko’s Chapel in Houston, Cavellini’s coals, and I try to always keep as an example the great photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto’s elegance.

Imperfection is an essential element of human nature.

Can a small macro-elephant made out of black licorice, with its ears full of holes like a tiny fossil, express aspects of manhood and its innumerable facets?

I decided to call the licorice series 'boogey beasts'.

It is a pun that comes from 'boogey man', the English equivalent of our ‘Babau’, the imaginary creature that populates our -perhaps no longer yours, but definitely still mine- dark night terrors.

It’s a figurative way to express the wildest part of the human soul, something that vanishes as soon as you realize that it’s just a harmless licorice pet.

Then, the roles are reversed: the viewer becomes the cruel being to be scared of, the one devouring the ‘boogey beast’. Chewy licorice has always fascinated me, more for its appearance and consistency than for its taste (I don’t usually eat it). I wanted my 'boogey beasts' to look like ancient artifacts found during excavations, thus making them a-temporal and a bit mysterious.

Why did you choose a ‘living’ matter, something that keeps on changing, that’s decomposable and, at the same time, ironic, almost a game, as if you found yourself in an amusement park, or in a Candy store?

I often take pictures of junk, in this case I chose to work with junk food. I am fascinated by almost all kinds of trash. I look for the re-evaluation of waste, I try to turn it into something more valuable, to change the way it’s usually considered. I play with irony: I prefer to use lightness as a medium to express myself.

OPPRESSIONE/LIBERAZIONE Il senso di Oppressione scaturito da oggetti che intrappolano un uomo in una clessidra, ma al contempo per Marcus esiste la speranza alla Liberazione?

Sì, esiste.

Nella mia performance mi pongo un preciso obiettivo: guardando il procedere del gioco, cerco di fare in modo che il giocatore che sta perdendo guadagni tempo, e che ne perda il giocatore che è in vantaggio. Per raggiungere questo scopo, uso il mio corpo per fermare la caduta delle palline di polistirolo all’interno della clessidra. Il risultato è che, sebbene io sia imprigionato all’interno della clessidra, il mio spirito e la mia possibilità di influenzare siano liberi di muoversi e agire nello spazio esterno.

OPPRESSION/LIBERATION The sense of Oppression resulting from the objects trapping that man in an hourglass, do you think the hope of liberation exists (for you, for us, for the man)?

Yes. In the performance, I have a goal.

I look at the game and try to give more time to the loosing player, and less time to the winning player, by stopping the Styrofoam balls with my own body. The result is that, although I'm trapped in the hour glass clock, my spirit and my influence are free and out in the open air.

L’Arsenale di Venezia apre le sue porte, per il quarto anno consecutivo, ai finalisti della settima edizione del Premio Arte Laguna: dal 17 al 31 marzo 2013, presso le tese di San Cristoforo, saranno esposte le opere dei 105 artisti internazionali selezionati per le categorie di pittura, scultura e installazione, video arte e performance, arte fotografica.

Durante la serata inaugurale, sabato 16 marzo, saranno annunciati i cinque vincitori assoluti, uno per ciascuna categoria.

105 finalisti su 8mila iscrizioni, pervenute da 37 Paesi questi sono i numeri del Premio Arte Laguna 2012/ 2013.

Questi numeri sono la conferma di una passione, la grande passione per la scoperta di nuovi talenti e questi segni numerici confermano solamente che questa dedizione è corrisposta da ottomila artisti di tutto il mondo che hanno creduto nel Premio, nel suo curatore Igor Zanti e nella sua giuria. Una scommessa che ogni anno si rinnova cosÏ come Zanti ha descritto nella sua presentazione " The day after tomorrow".

The Day After Tomorrow - L'alba del giorno dopo, è un film del 2004 diretto dal regista Roland Emmerich. È una storia di fantascienza apocalittica del filone catastrofico, sceneggiata dallo stesso Emmerich, che narra di una ipotetica, per quanto parziale, fine del mondo.

Con l’avvicinarsi del 21 dicembre 2012, il genere catastrofico ha avuto una considerevole impennata di film, serie tv, documentari di taglio pseudoscientifico, si sono concentrati, sempre con maggiore attenzione, nell’immaginare diversi ed originali scenari apocalittici.. Ma la fine del mondo c’è stata?

Essendo io seduto alla mia scrivania, a scrivere queste poche righe, posso affermare con certezza che non c’è stata nel senso in cui la immaginavamo o nella forma che ci è stata suggerita.

Il 21 dicembre è stata, almeno per quanto riguarda la maggior parte della penisola italiana, una soleggiata giornata invernale che ha dato il via alle vacanze natalizie, senza però cedere il passo a nessun evento particolarmente catastrofico... ...La mostra dei finalisti di quest’anno sarà, forse, il nostro personale, Day After Tomorrow, la nostra alba del giorno dopo, il punto da dove ripartire, anche se evidentemente, nulla si è fermato, ma anzi tutto ha continuato ad essere vivo e vegeto a germinare, a crescere, come fa la natura durante i mesi invernali, quando si nasconde in un apparente sonno foriero di vita. Non mi rimane, per concludere, che dire grazie a tutti quelli che in questo premio ci credono, e continuano a crederci, e soprattutto a tutti gli artisti che hanno saputo con il loro lavoro, rendere ogni edizione sempre più eccezionale, ed hanno voluto essere partecipi di questa nuova radiosa alba.

Grazie a tutti voi che credete nell’Arte.

Questo nome deriva da spermatozoi e la doppia perchè semplicemente sono in due TT. E la loro dualità è assolutamente compenetrante, anche per le persone che gli sono attorno.

Ma andiamo per ordine. Alla domanda pressochè ovvia "perchè questo nome?" La risposta è stata diretta, semplice " perchè seminiamo la tela, perchè

In addition to three-dimensionality, there is an extra component: Time.

Time is one of the key variables.

Time is allowed to exists and expand, in our works.

We did not create a painting with the fourth dimension in it… it just came by itself.

That’s how our work turned out to be extremely contemporary: going a thousand steps backward.

There is no need to make large-scale installations or huge works, if you want to create something new.

Conceptually, simplicity is the guiding principle of all things, it is our avant-garde.

And, most of all, it is one of our greatest needs.

Our works have been defined abstract, informal, cubist and spatial.

Lucio Fontana, for example, cuts the canvas to go further. To look beyond it.

We crossed the canvas, as indicated by Fontana, but when we were passing through the cut, we stopped, looked around and discovered a whole new world there… so, instead of keep on going, we stayed in the middle of it.

Finding a microcosm.

We called it ‘Orthogonal Spatialism’. In a square millimeter of a painting you can find a whole world, this is what we want to reveal.”

Non essere troppo lucido, perdere l a concentr azione, percepire anziché guardare, lasciare posto alle apparizioni, sono fra gli elementi chiave della mia ricerca e sono parte integrante dei miei strumenti di lavoro al pari della macchina fotografica e del computer..

Ed è per questo che non ricerco l'evidenza, non amo mostrare, non amo determinare un estetica ma piuttosto sfumarla, non voglio che l'opera ti costringa a guardarla.

Mi piace l'ombra.. la scopri se ne hai voglia.

Il desiderio mi porta a cercare di trasmettere un sapore, nei miei ritratti così come nei paesaggi cerco di ottenere una vaghissima rassomiglianza con il reale pur lasciandone intatte le caratteristiche originali. Questa vaga rassomiglianza ne determina il sapore.

Poi. Dal sapore si passa al sapere. Il piacere mi predispone alla ricerca.

Eppure le tue opere riescono ad essere espressione tangibile dell'odierno.

Questi sono dei lavori sulle manifestazioni del Cairo, una serie di 6 che ho esposto con la galleria Massimo Minini al MIA e alla Maison Européenne de la Photographie a Parigi. Quando ho visto sugli schermi la prima manifestazione sono rimasto molto colpito e mi è venuta l'idea di lavorare su immagini di folle. Una tale immensità che riempiva lo schermo, che ho fotografato, e che mi riportava alla multitudine di interferenze televisive della mia infanzia.

Attraverso l’uso di contrasti molto forti volevo ritrasmettere la drammaticità di quei momenti... della storia.

It’s raining, when we get to Naples.

That’s weird.

The taxi driver tells us that it's been raining since we arrived.

That’s soothing… for us, at this point, not surprising anymore.

Winter rain gives a different perspective to the city.

Colours fade up to the point of vanishing… in a moment (of absence) the city is drawn by its own shadows. Everything is perfect for what we have to do.

There’s the right atmosphere to meet and interview Paul Thorel...

Please, try not to misunderstand what we are saying.

It's just because Paul, in his art, does this, as well.

The absence of colours, in order to transform visions through shadows, alternating very strong light and dark colours to give new power, new life to things.

All this, with much discretion.

Your search starts from memories: old televisions, faces and art from the past, like in the case of Jawlensky. Memory is closely linked to abandonment.

What’s abandonment, for Paul Thorel?

I am very attached to art history.

I need to visually put together forgotten things, in order to rebuild and refine our necessity of creating. We suffer a lot because of abandonment. Artists are always afraid of being left.

We do have forgotten many artists, who have been historically decisive to achieve what we are today.

Possiamo entrare?

Sì perché nelle tue opere è predominante l’esigenza di far interagire lo spettatore, creandogli un luogo, una culla, uno spazio materico dove egli stesso diventa parte integrante dell’opera. Da dove nasce l’esigenza di condivisione?

Sono partita dal presupposto che un’opera è elemento narrante. Tuttavia, capita che essa utilizzi linguaggi non a tutti comprensibili o troppo finiti in se stessi. Per me è divenuto importante impostare una traccia da cui ognuno possa sviluppare un’esperienza, essere parte della narrazione, farla sua. Giocare sulle possibilità di pensiero e d’interazione aiuta a oltrepassare i convenzionali confini tra opera e fruitore: più che una parete da allestire o una massa da schivare e osservare a distanza, creare un luogo/ situazione da scoprire a 360° permette all’osservatore d’essere il completamento di un pezzo.Non servono molteplici interpretazioni perché la chiave di lettura è il fruitore (meglio se caratterizzato da un personale pizzico d’ironia)!

Scappavo spesso da scuola, da casa, da tutti e mi rifugiavo nei boschi (la fortuna di vivere in mezzo a un parco!). Osservavo il cielo attraverso la folta maglia di rami. Mi sentivo protetta come in uno smisurato nido naturale, un grembo che gratuitamente mi accoglieva e con cui, stranamente, non dovevo entrare in conflitto. Il nido è di per sé un rifugio in cui nascere (Grande Nido è una sorta di enorme uovo), crescere, trovare conforto. Un nido, però, è anche il limite primo da valicare per poter meglio conoscere, per scongiurare l’inettitudine alla vita.

Adoro gli alberi, oltre che per l’ampia iconografia che li caratterizza, per la loro generosità: silenziosamente vivono, non chiedono nulla e danno molto. All’ombra della chioma di un albero si riscopre il tempo sospeso, magico.

Quando esposi L’albero di latta allo Spazio Heart di Vimercate (Mondoscarabocchio), ebbi due grandi soddisfazioni: notare come gli adulti si mettevano liberamente in gioco e vedere arrivare puntualmente un gruppetto di bambini del quartiere pronti ad animare l’esposizione. Potevano interagire con “l’opera” e, in seguito, incuriosirsi, porre domande, interpretare il mondo artistico senza alcuna soggezione. Permettere di rompere il silenzio di uno spazio espositivo, stuzzicare la compostezza del rapporto fruitore/ opera è, se ben studiato, un’alternativa per sensibilizzare, per riavvicinare chiunque all’arte (e non solo). L’installazione di “Mi sento nudo con tanti scarabocchi in testa”, ironizza sull’essere umano contemporaneo che non ha mai tempo, ha bisogno di coordinare tutto, deve apparire al meglio, prendersi troppo sul serio, pianificare attentamente ogni sua azione.

Allestire una classe con questo professore silenzioso, immobile, privo di fretta, dava l’opportunità di fermarsi e riflettere. Tracce di Contemporaneo (evento promosso da Associazione Heart e Bice Bugatti Club, a cura di Simona Bartolena) ebbe la durata di un giorno. Nello scattare le fotografie per documentare “Mi sento nudo … tiene banco”, pensai a quanto quel contemporaneo da lì a poco sarebbe appartenuto al passato, a quanto vecchie già fossero le tracce lasciate …

“Mi sento nudo con tanti scarabocchi in testa” è composto da un ulivo vero, purtroppo morto a causa del freddo. Lo vidi a terra nel momento in cui lo tagliarono e pensai malinconicamente al re nudo che in quel momento era.

Rigoglioso, fu un bel decoro da giardino, ma, spoglio, rischiava di divenire solo legna da ardere. La fiaba di Andersen mi balenò in testa. Lo invitai a una nuova avventura e pare abbia acconsentito!

Attraverso un intreccio caotico di fili di metallo, riesci a creare un'imponente Equilibrio. Questa ovviamente è una nostra interpretazione… esiste realmente questa ricerca di "equilibrio" per Anna Turina?

Mi accorgo di credere a una logica basata sui paradossi e spesso sono costretta a focalizzare un baricentro ove potermi permettere d’essere in bilico.

Quando elaboro un pezzo, gli equilibri nascono spontaneamente o per necessità, qualora esso debba rendersi funzionale.

Allo stesso modo, per me, anche lo scarabocchio più istintivo possiede una solida coerenza, per via di una dialettica a noi connaturata.

Accade che, per necessità, debba riordinare tutto con coscienza, ma poi non riesco a resistere: torno a scompaginare i pensieri, a mettere in discussione tutto, a portare al limite determinati paradigmi.

In fondo siamo un continuo divenire e, nel mio personale percorso, gli equilibri non so se li cerco, forse me li invento.

The need to interact with the viewer prevails, in your pieces: you create a place, a cot, a space of matter where he/she becomes an essential part of the work. Where does this craving for sharing come from?

I started from the assumption that a work of art is a narrative element.

It happens, from time to time, that its language is not understandable for everybody, or that it’s a bit too self-sufficient. For me, it has become important to set a track where everyone can develop his/her own experience, be part of the narration, make it personal. Playing with thoughts and inter-action helps to go beyond the conventional boundaries between artworks and viewers: rather than just setting up a wall or making a mass to dodge and observe from a distance, I try to create a place/situation to discover, where the observer is the completion, the missing piece. There’s no need for multiple interpretations, in my works, because the key is the user (and it’s much better if he/she adds a personal touch of irony)!

The way your artworks communicate. Your metal sculptures express their own language. They have a warm, maternal feeling and, at the same time, they are very entertaining! Tell us about their own words, their expression… who are your works?

I used to run away from school, away from home, away from everyone, and go in the woods (that’s the good fortune to live in the middle of a park!).

I looked at the sky through the branches. I felt protected as if I was in a huge natural nest, in a lap that freely welcomed me and with whom, strangely enough, I did not have to fight. The nest itself is a haven where to born, grow and find comfort (my Big Nest is some kind of huge egg). A nest, however, is also the very first limit to cross, in order to meet the world and avoid the ineptitude of living. I love trees, both for the extensive iconography that characterizes them and for their generos 78

ity: they live quietly, not asking for anything and giving you a lot. In the shade of a tree’s canopy, you can discover a magic, suspended time.

I had two great satisfactions when I showed my Tin Tree at the “Heart Space” in Vimercate (Mondoscarabocchio): to see adults feeling free to play with it and to have a bunch of kids from the neighborhood around, who animated the exhibit the whole time. They could interact with the work and, later on, be curious, ask questions, interpret the artistic world without any fear.

Allowing to break the silence of an exhibition space, teasing the conventional composure of the relationship between the viewers and the artworks… if well organized, these are good ways to raise awareness and to get people closer to art (and not just that…). The installation I feel naked with so many scribbles on my head is ironical about those contemporary human beings who never have time for anything, who always need to coordinate and must look at their best, who take themselves extremely seriously and carefully plan every single action.

Setting up a class with a silent, motionless professor gave people the opportunity to stop and think. Traces of Contemporary (an event sponsored by Heart Association and by Bice Bugatti Club, and curated by Simona Bartolena) lasted one day. In taking the pictures to document I feel naked ... holding forth, I thought about the fact that what was considered contemporary at the moment would have very soon belonged to the past, and that the traces left there were already old...

In I feel naked with so many scribbles on my head there’s a real olive tree, dead because of the cold. I saw it on the ground when they cut it, and I melancholically thought about the fact that it looked like some kind of “naked king”. When alive, it was a beautiful decoration for a garden but now, bare, it was in danger to just become firewood. Andersen’s tale flashed through my head. I invited it to live a new adventure… looks like it agreed!

You are able to create an impressive balance with a chaotic mixture of metal wires.

This, of course, is our own idea... is there a search for "balance" in Anna Turina?

I believe in a logic based on paradoxes; I often focus on a center of gravity, a place where I can afford to be out of balance. When I create a piece, balances arise spontaneously or by necessity, if it needs to be functional. Similarly, for me, even the most instinctive doodle has a solid consistency, because of the dialectic deeply rooted into each of us. It happens that I have to rationally rearrange everything, but then I can not resist: I go back and disrupt my thoughts, start questioning everything, in order to test the limits of several paradigms. In the end, we are constantly evolving and, in my own personal journey, I don’t know if I'm really looking for balance, maybe I’m just… inventing it.

I segni si fanno e si sfanno per accumulo o sottrazione. La parola scritta ha senso quando si libera dell’oggetto che nomina così che sia il segno protagonista e farsi oggetto. Quindi non annulla il senso anzi lo amplifica rendendolo segno portatore di un significato altro. Il pensiero si traduce in pensiero grafico che cambia in momenti emozionalmente diversi. Pura magia.

Azzardo… un metodo, un codice che decifra in maniera lucida anche le ombre con cui si può convivere, in uno spazio che può coinvolgersi …

Sulla porta del mio studio vi è appeso uno scritto: questo è il luogo della mia immobilità.

Visiting the studio of someone who makes art is like entering a bedroom or a corner of a house unexposed to unfamiliar or not intimate people, and the ability to adapt to a place to discover is rather pleasant. We start listening with respect and then we are captured ….

You entered the place of my immobility.

Oliana, your working instruments are simple and recognisable, but everything becomes important and gets a new life, and we didn’t realise it just a moment before …

My working instruments are chosen among the traditional painting instruments, with a preference for pigments diluted with water or a special, natural glue.

Touch, colour and inner visions that follow who is looking at them; a dimension that invites to knowledge also when the shadows or the cuts go through the big canvases and can upset but not reject ….

I wouldn’t like to disappoint anybody saying that there is nothing or almost nothing to explain in a piece of art.

A piece of art in itself is something complete, conclusive, containing all the elements to be understood.

The big canvases add pathos. I realise not only that I am in front of a creative work, but I am inside it and I don’t know where it will lead me.

Unwritten texts, unreadable words, signs are the ideal friends of matter, a kind of very sophisticated decoration that puts us in relation with the daily communication of feelings ….

Signs are made and unmade for accumulation and subtraction.

The written word has a meaning when it gets rid of the object it names, so that the sign becomes a protagonist and an object. So it doesn’t cancel the meaning but it amplifies it making it a sign bearing another meaning.

The thought becomes a graphic thought that changes in emotionally different moments.

Pure magic.

I venture … a method, a code decoding clearly also the shadows one can live with, in a space that can involve the viewer …

Un dono è un’eredità che viene da lontano, non è mai la materia o lo spirito che inizia il primo battito ma ha già una vita compiuta che non sarà mai la stessa del suo tempo.

Se il tempo tr aduce quello vediamo nel pensiero delle cose E lo rende leggibile - intagliato di tr acce che conducono alla nascita -, chi ripor ta quello che è illeggibile sulla superficie dell’origine trovando le nozioni, le sostanze plastiche, le alchimie che rendono la pelle della car ta un oggetto che respir a?

Nelle opere di Oliana Spazzoli avviene una precisa resur rezione: come se il popolo di una biblioteca scompar sa riavesse le fr atture di parole-segni, in una nuova realtà che mani apocrife hanno inciso nella sua mano.

La balena con tanti occhi è il mio disegno preferito, ma anche gli uccelli cupi o colorati testimoni di ritratti perduti fissi e dolenti o di organi sparsi e spaiati. Il tatuaggio evoca la letteratura dell’avventura, pirati innamorati, gesta eroiche o tristezze condannate all’eternità.

L’arte di conservare nel disegno questo mondo visuale e profondo è una missione oppure una selvaggia necessità?

Prima di tutto sono estremamente sorpreso per l’acutezza e la non banalità della domanda/e .

Credo sia una necessità molto personale che spesso trova fondamenta nel cliente che mi chiede e richiede il massimo. Nell’iconografia del tatuaggio classico non è mai stata presente una poetica o un linguaggio formale che andasse al di la del tatuaggio stesso, se non una romantica retorica per certi versi anche un poco ingenua, nel senso più romantico del termine.

Io sono per la forma, anche perchè la sostanza senza la forma non avrebbe respiro, vivono di conseguenza.

Questo è il mio linguaggio, mi piace la bellezza che fa chiudere gli occhi, che minaccia le certezze, l’imprevedibile e il nascosto..... fare questo mestiere è una missione che spesso penso di non avere, mi sento piccolo piccolo rispetto a tanti colleghi che vivono col “sangue” questo mestiere...mi piaceva il gioco di parole del sangue.

Il bello è nelle curve, nel non sapere cosa c’è dopo, un volto vuotato dei suoi segni riconoscibili... mi piace far crescere nuove identità, mi piace creare e dar vita a un nuovo formato iconografico di bellezza, che non necessariamente deve piacere, anzi ai più non piace...

ma la cosa piace a me :-) 95

The many-eyed whale is my favorite drawing, but I also like dark or colored birds witnessing either lost, fixed, painful portraits or scattered, odd organs.

Tattoos evoke either adventure-literature, pirates in love, heroic actions or never-ending sadness.

In your drawings, there is the art of preserving a deep visual world… is it a mission or a wild need?

First of all, I am extremely surprised by the sharpness of your question!

I think it’s a very personal need, often matching with the customer’s very specific requests.

There’s never been, in the iconography of the classic tattoo, a poetic or formalized language going beyond the tattoo itself... just some kind of rhetoric, in some ways even a little naive, in the most romantic sense possible.

I pay much attention to concrete forms, partly because substance without form could not exist, they are absolutely connected. This is my language, I love beauty that makes your eyes close, that threatens certainties, I love unexpected, hidden things… doing this job is a mission that I often do not think I have, I feel very small compared to many colleagues who work with “blood”... I liked the pun “blood”.

emptied of its recognizable marks... I like to let new identities grow, I like to create and give life to a new iconographic format of beauty, which does not necessarily have to be appreciated… most people actually do not like it... but I do! :-) The tattoo needs to be in tune with those who will live dreaming of it or having nightmares about it... are you always conscious that your artwork on somebody’s skin will give a shape to the volatile matter of memories?

It’s actually a very strange, magical thing.

There’s often a peculiar empathy running, where desires flow, and where the environment responds. AND I DO, TOO. In other words, even without knowing the customer I prepare a design that reads into his past and experiences, even though I did not have any knowledge of that and, above all, I didn’t know the person himself!

It’s a beautiful thing, even if it’s very short, to unconsciously bond with someone through a drawing and, even more, through his own pain.

I can never remember people’s faces… I regret that, because I often disappoint those who I meet, to whom I think I have given a lot.

Art is experiential, it grows, like living matter, on what we feed it… transforming visual experience into tattooing defended the freedom of your research?

In the beginning that was a huge limit, because I considered the technical knowledge more important than the formal research. As time (a long time) passed, the two things melted together.

I believe, however, that the surface is often a limit, the immediacy you have moving the brush with oil paint does not exist in tattooing, where the sign is carefully designed and measured.

Tattooing contains a very formative discipline, that fits perfectly with personal research, it’s a bit like using water colors... you HAVE to think!

And, after all, creating is a universal need that binds us all, whatever is the form that’s most suitable to each of us.

Yes… it definitely protected me… today I can say that it allowed me to understand different languages, although I think that this is a very personal attitude.

Is skin the best support for you, in order to express yourself?

The sharp patterns, the exact overlapping of different elements, using just the amount of color that is necessary, the rapidity of the creation may have reduced your temptations and excesses...

I stand for subtraction.

Paul Valéry once said that the deepest part of a man lies in his own skin… of course, with all the limitations and the dark disorders that follow.

Skin is a necessity. We wear it and we bear it, and when we can not stand it anymore, and deep wounds do not let us breathe, we can create a new skin for ourselves, more intense and rare.

Come si può descrivere di una superficie ubriaca fatta di segni? Fiori accoppiati in un horror vacui tenero e accogliente. Si riconoscono, i fiori, e ci mettono a nostro agio, anche nel piccolo disagio della moltitudine, della sovrapposizione, e nell’avvolgimento che aderisce ai nostri pensieri distratti…

Da quando la storia dell’arte ha cominciato a dispiegarsi in termini

di “movimenti” e di “avanguardie”, rappresentare o dipingere fiori è diventato un tabù per qualsiasi artista che si rispetti.

I fiori sono diventati il simbolo stesso di una pittura da salotto, decorativa, vuota e priva di spessore concettuale. Il decorativisimo è stato bandito dall’arte come il peggiore dei vizi, in un mondo ossessionato dalla sacralità del Concetto eretto a nume tutelare dell’Opera. Eppure, a ben guardare, i fiori sono il contrario dello scialbo e fiacco decorativisimo.

Con i loro contrasti, le loro asperità e il loro vicendevole rincorrersi e lottare nelle mille forme che la natura ha fornito loro, i fiori sono simbolo di vitalità, di lotta, di energia. “Il mondo vegetale così calmo, così dimesso, dove tutto sembra pervaso di accettazione, silenzio, obbedienza, ricordo, è invece il luogo dove la ribellione contro il destino è la più veemente e la più ostinata”, scrive Maurice Maeterlinck nel suo straordinario L’intelligence des fleurs.

“Il fiore dona all’uomo un esempio prodigioso di disobbedienza, coraggio, perseveranza e ingegnosità”. In un altro passo, che mi ha ispirato molto per il mio lavoro, Maeterlinck sembra ricalcare alla perfezione ciò che avviene nella mente di un artista che decida di utilizzare la trama complessa del mondo floreale per comporre le sue opere: “Si direbbe che davvero le idee vengano ai fiori allo stesso modo in cui vengono a noi”, scrive. “Essi brancolano nello stesso buio, incontrano gli stessi ostacoli, la stessa volontà avversa, nel medesimo ignoto; conoscono le stesse leggi, le stesse delusioni, glistessi trionfi 103

lenti e difficili. Sembra proprio che i fiori posseggano la nostra pazienza, la nostra perseveranza, il nostro amor proprio; la stessa intelligenza varia e ricca di sfumature… Lottano, come noi, contro una grande, indifferente forza che poi finisce per aiutarli. La loro creatività non solo segue gli stessi metodi prudenti e minuziosi, gli stessi faticosi sentieri, stretti e tortuosi, ma anche quei balzi inaspettati che permettono all’improvviso di raggiungere un punto fermo pur essendo partiti da un’idea vaga”.

Così, allo stesso modo del dispiegarsi di un fiore alla sua nascita e della sua eterna lotta per arrivare alla bellezza della pianta matura, anche le mie opere crescono in un accumularsi solo apparentemente caotico e causuale di elementi differenti, di colori, di trame, di contrasti e tensioni tra figure e 104

colori, fino ad arrivare alla forma compiuta del quadro.

Poi ci sono loro, i nostri eroi, la madonna e i santi, le pin up ma anche le icone del potere e dell’immagine, il carnevale colorato delle divinità indù e le figure che ci riportano alla stanzetta armati di colla e forbici a ricostruire, in qualche modo nel nostro diario, una ir-realtà più affine…

Tutti noi, che siamo venuti al mondo

dopo lo spartiacque decisivo degli anni Sessanta - gli anni del boom economico, e, di conseguenza, della scoperta del “consumismo delle immagini” e della comunicazione diffusa -, oggi non possiamo che avvertire l’inevitabile pre-esistenza di ogni immagine rispetto alla nostra immaginazione, e dunque l’impossibilità

di costruire un’immagine “nuova” a priori, in un mondo basato ormai in maniera ossessiva sulla ridondanza e sull’invadenza delle immagini diffuse ovunque nel mondo (dagli schermi di tablet e computer ai video alle pubblicità). Ecco allora che, proprio come bambini nella loro stanza dei giochi, noi cerchiamo di ri-costruire il mondo e l’universo a nostra immagine e somiglianza, semplicimente scegliendo, ritagliando, riposizionando, sovrapponendo, accumulando immagini e forme seguendo il nostro istinto e la nostra sensibilità formale… le immagini centrali dei quadri, quelle che “abitano” il folle paese di Cardeña, non sono che strani fantasmi, enigmatiche presenze prelevate dal mondo cosiddetto “reale” e riportate in un universo altro, magico, prodigioso, che ha fatto dello spiazzamento e della meraviglia la sua cifra stilistica e il suo credo. Avviene così che il Papa possa convivere tranquillamente con Bin Laden o con il Dalai Lama, una bambola sexy con un assassino, il Bambin Gesù con baby Krishna o con Ganesha… perduto per sempre il loro potere intimidatorio, taumaturgico o consolatorio, queste figure diventano pure presenze fantasmatiche, plasmate a misura della nostra immaginazione.

Non posso fare a meno di pensare alla costruzione di questo universo di segni, non si può non notarlo questo tempo della ricerca; Camus dice “Bisogna immaginare Sisifo felice”

ì, Camus aveva centrato la dimensione sublime e snervante del lento svolgersi di un tempo privato delle consuete prospettive di velocità, di limitatezza e di ragione: il tempo lungo, quasi infinito, del ritaglio perenne e ossessivo, che si ripete ogni giorno uguale al precedente, e dell’accumulazione continua di forme e di immagini, senza regole né

limiti, è lo stesso che può sperimentare colui che vive la situazione dolorosa e avvilente della reclusione, della malattia, dell’abbandono, della solitudine.

Eppure, in questo inaspettato recupero di senso, in mezzo a questa dispersione eterna di attimi senza tempo, in questo ritrovare un nucleo formale felice e spontaneo (come la scrittura automatica dei surrealisti o le 105

prove di Art Brut dei disadattati mentali), c’è un senso di gratificazione, di felicità e di grazia fanciullesca che non si scambierebbero più con nulla al mondo.

L’insieme delle tue opere è dominante e stordisce; serve tutta l’esperienza del mondo (che ti circonda) per semplificare la meraviglia, quella vera che può riconoscere anche un bambino adulto che non è mai cresciuto…

Inutile citare Picasso e la sua celebre frase

sulla necessità di ritrovare la “semplicità” del bambino oltre l’esperienza e la consapevolezza formale dell’artista.Certo è che, nella pratica solo apparentemente semplice del collage, è necessaria una grande dose di disinvoltura e di naturalezza nel lasciarsi guidare dalle forme e dai colori, un’essenzialità nel non scegliere deliberatamente gli elementi del puzzle che si va piano piano costruendo sotto i tuoi occhi, lasciando che essi “atterrino” da soli sulla tela, senza mai fermarsi a riflettere su ciò che sta uscendo o su ciò che dovrà emeregere dal fondo astratto dei colori e dei fiori, per far sì che la composizione e il fulcro del quadro emergano alla fine da soli, senza intermediari né registi, con la forza e l’immediatezza di un’apparizione accidentale e fortuita.

Felipe fai questo per noi, ci riempi di sogni e colori e non trovi importante apparire come un logo posticcio su un prodotto inutile…

L

’unica “firma” possibile per un artista è la sua cifra stilistica, la sua capcità di trasformare il caos in forma, la sua passione per la bellezza in ogni forma possibile essa possa apparire nel mondo. Il resto è un inutile gioco di vanità e di presunzione sul piccolo 106

palsoscenico del mondo: inaugurazioni, serate mondane, piccoli circoletti borghesi che vogliono celebrare la star di turno… Felipe ha scelto di rifuggire da questo, rendendosi imprendibile e lasciandosi rappresentare unicamente dalle forme cangianti e colorare del suo lavoro artistico.

Adoro Ganesh, il giardino delle delizie e la Madonna di Antonello da Messina, in fondo cerchiamo sempre una sicurezza originaria….

La ricerca di spiritualità è una costante dell’uomo,

dagli albori della civiltà al caotico e demenziale mondo ipercommercializzato e mercificato in cui siamo costretti a vivere oggi. Non vedo reali differenze tra la forza di un Buddah, di un Cristo, di un Ganesh o di una Madonna con in braccio il bambinello.

Sono tutte rappresentazioni della ricerca del sacro, del centro e dell’origine, che appartiene in maniera naturale all’uomo, così come l’aspirazione alla libertà, all’amore, alla fratellanza universale.

How could you describe a “drunk” surface made of signs?

Flowers paired in a soft and cozy horror vacui. We can see flowers, and they put us at ease, even in the small discomfort of their overlapping and winding multitude, something that sticks to our distracted minds...

S

ince art history started to be organized in terms of “movements” and “avant-garde”, representing and painting flowers have become a taboo for any respectable artist. Flowers have become the symbol of some kind of old “living room-style” painting: something decorative, empty and with no conceptual depth. Decorative paintings have been banned from art, in a world obsessed with Concept, now considered the

tutelary deity of any art work.

Yet, on closer inspection, flowers are the exact opposite of something just dull or mushy.

With their contrasts, their roughness and their mutual chasing and fighting each other, in the thousands of forms that nature provided them, flowers are symbols of vitality, struggle and energy. “The calm and resigned plant world, where everything seems possessed by acceptance, silence, obedience and memories, is instead the place where rebellion against fate is the most vehement and stubborn”, Maurice Maeterlinck wrote in his extraordinary L’intelligence des fleurs.

“Flowers give people a wonderful example of disobedience, courage, perseverance and ingenuity”.

In another passage, that enormously inspired my work, Maeterlinck seems to perfectly understand what happens in the mind of an artist who decides to use the complex floral world to compose his works: “It really seems that flowers have ideas in the same way people do”, he wrote, “they grope in the same darkness, they encounter the same obstacles, the same hostile will, the same unknown; they know the same laws, the same disappointments, the same slow and difficult triumphs. It really seems that flowers have our patience, our perseverance, our self-respect, and the same varied and nuanced intelligence...

They struggle, like we do, against a huge, indifferent force that then ends up helping them.

Their creativity does not just follow the same careful and meticulous methods, the same tiring, narrow and winding paths, but also those unexpected leaps that suddenly allow to reach a certain point, even if starting from a vague idea.” So, like a flower in its opening and in its eternal struggle to get to the beauty of a mature plant, my works also grow in a seemingly chaotic and random accumulation of different elements, colors, textures, contrasts and tensions between shapes and colors, up to the final form of the picture.

And then, here they come: the Virgin Mary and the saints, the pin-ups and the icons of power and image, the colorful carnival of Hindu gods and the figures taking us back to our room, with scissors and glue, in order to reconstruct in some way, in our diary, an un-reality more closely related to what we are...

We were born after the Sixties’ crucial

watershed - the years of the Economic Boom, “images’ consumerism” and widespread communication. For this reason, we are experiencing that images pre-exist our imagination, thus it seems impossible to construct an image that could be considered new in advance, in a world based, in an obsessive way, on redundancy and intrusiveness of images (on tablets, computers, videos and ads). So, just like children in their playroom, we try to re-build the world and the universe according to our image and likeness, simply by selecting, cutting, relocating, stacking and storing images and forms, following our instincts and our formal sensibility.

The central images of the paintings, those who “live” into Cardeña’s crazy country, are just strange ghosts, enigmatic presences taken from the so-called “real” world to a different universe: a magical, miraculous place where displacement and wonder are essential to its style and belief.

In this way, it happens that the Pope peacefully coexists with Bin Laden and Dalai Lama, a sexy doll with a murderer, baby Jesus with baby Krishna or Ganesha... having lost their intimidating, miraculous or comforting power, these figures become pure phantasmatic presences, shaped to fit our imagination.

I’m thinking about the construction of your universe of signs… it is impossible not to notice this time of your research; Camus said, “One must imagine Sisyphus happy”.

C

amus pinpointed the both sublime and exasperating dimension of the slow unfolding of time when it’s deprived of its usual perspectives: speed, limitations and reason. That’s the long, almost infinite, time of the obsessive cutting, repeating itself every single day, accumulating shapes and images, without rules or limits. Those who live painful and humiliating situations like imprisonment, illness, abandonment, of loneliness can experience the same thing. Yet, in this unexpected recovery of meaning, in the midst of this eternal dispersion of timeless moments, in this finding a happy and spontaneous formal nucleus (such as Surrealists’ automatic writing or Art Brut works made by mental misfits), there is a sense of gratification, happiness and childish grace that you would not exchange with anything else in the whole world.

The combination of your works dominates and stuns; you need a huge experience of the world (around you) to simplify the wonder, the real one that can also be recognized by a “not grown-up”...

There’s no need to mention Picasso and his

famous phrase about the necessity to find the “simplicity” of the child together with the experience and formal awareness of the artist.

What is certain is that, in the only apparently simple technique of collage, you need a great deal of ease and naturalness in allowing shapes and colors to guide you. There’s a sort of essentiality in not deliberately choosing the elements of the puzzle that is slowly building up in front of you, in letting them “land” on the canvas by themselves, without ever

stopping to think about what is coming or what will emerge from the abstract colors and flowers. The objective is that the composition and the core of the picture emerge at the end by themselves, without intermediaries or directors, with the power and immediacy of an accidental, fortuitous apparition.

Felipe decided to run away from all this, becoming “uncatchable” and leaving only the iridescent colored shapes of his artistic work to represent him.

Felipe, that’s what you do for us: you fill us up with dreams and colors, and you do not care about appearing like a fake logo on a useless product...

The search for spirituality is a constant

The only possible “signatures”, for an artist, are his style, his ability to shape chaos and his passion for beauty, in every possible way it could appear in the world. The rest is a useless game of vanity and presumption, on the small stage of the world: openings, soirees, small bourgeois circles who want to celebrate the star of the moment...

I love Ganesh, the garden of delights and the Madonna by Antonello da Messina. In the end we always look for the original safety... feature of humankind, from the dawn of civilization to the chaotic and insane world in which we are forced to live today.

I see no real difference between the strength of Buddha, Christ, Ganesh and Mary holding the Holy Child. They are all representations of the search for the sacred, the center and origin, which is something that belongs naturally to man, as well as the aspiration for freedom, love and universal brotherhood.

Grandi, grandissime, come le facciate dei palazzi o angoli industriali, superfici in balia della realtà, ma anche piccole, tag, icone feroci o ironiche che sbucano in angoli anonimi di strade conosciute.

Possono essere anche pesanti come gli intonaci, i mattoni la polvere a la vernice o leggere come il fruscio dei pennarelli rigorosamente neri.Vi presento OZMO.

La materia di OZMO si fonde con il lato sporco della materia e il più sacro dei simboli; un gioco sofisticato di citazioni alte e basse come un mash-up tra Bach e i Pubblic Enemy …

OZMO: Io preferisco Mozart … e lo mixerei con Eminen.

In realtà non ascolto hip hop in genere, ho ascoltato un po di rap italiano ma quello americano ho cominciato solo adesso a capire lo slang. Non lo capivo molto la lingua, poi sono stato a New York e un po’ a Londra, alla fine sul campo ho migliorato! … come musica preferisco il Calypso, perché secondo me fonde meglio le caratteristiche di queste due citazioni.

Il pezzo che vi ho indicato – io ascolto sempre pezzi Calypso rigorosamente pre anni ’70 – ha un suono molto ingenuo, molto folkloristico che arriva dalla tradizione caraibica, ma è mischiata anche con influenze che hanno dato luogo in tempi contemporanei (dagli anni 70) allo ska e al raggae... scoprirete dei pezzi che al tempo stesso sono dei classici e hanno il seme di quello che poi sarà la musica “in levare” … anche la pratica del freestyle nel rap, deriva dai calypsonian che durante il loro carnevale disputavano una “guerra” in rima, la Calypso War, dove chi vinceva diventa il Calypso king dell’anno, quindi il Calypso war non è altro che l’antenato delle battle di freestayle nell’hip hop ovvero sfide di rime dove l’avversario deve rilanciare alla sfida approfondendo la ricerca ho scoperto anche una radice

che si ricollega ai “trovatori francesi”, perché le isole di Trinidad e Tobago (isola dove è nato il calypso) sono state a lungo dominate dai francesi, poi le influenze afro, creole e cajum; i calypsonian anni 50 si ispiravano al modo dei trovatori francesi, i poeti musicisti del 1200 europeo e medioevale.

Musica e ritmi africani che si fonde con mondo dei trovatori; lo ritrovi nei loro testi dove si parla di eventi storici o episodi di una memoria dell’africa del passato; un modo per comunicare ad altri ex schiavi la propria memoria o il proprio passato anche raccontando di eventi contemporanei in musica, come i cantastorie…

Le tue storie di immagini hanno un peso, una “forma evocativa” (cit. da una tua intervista recente) anche se spesso sono alla sintesi formale assoluta con bianchi e neri, al tratto e isolate (Pre-Giudizi universali le mie preferite come anche le icone isolate che si snodano su un muro di cinta dell’Attack Festival ) …

OZMO: be, il bianco e nero è l’ossatura dell’immagine, o meglio si può ridurre l’aspetto pittorico, l’immagine si può ridurre al disegno, l’espressione più sintetica del disegno è l’impostazione grafica dove il disegno la fa da padrona.

I tuoi lavori suscitano meraviglia, non ci si può sottrarre a leggere il codice della memoria che ci fa riconoscere un dannato michelangiolesco o le orecchie di topolino… mi piacerebbe pensarlo come un nuovo linguaggio pop, che si riappropria della propria esperienza visiva …

OZMO: nel 2003 ho cominciato a lavorare come Ozmo, con questa impostazione enciclopedica delle immagini che si rincorrono e che si mixano tra contemporanee, storiche ecc. Quel tipo di ricerca veniva subito dopo una mia esperienza nel mondo dell’arte, lavoravo per un gallerista di Milano per il quale io dipingevo quadri molto colorati, impegnativi … io dipingevo ad olio immagini che scattavo con la macchina fotografica digitale, utilizzando situazioni di estrema oscurità o luminosità, quelle immagini che erano al tempo stesso iperrealiste ma anche astratte e le ridipingevo su tele di grandi dimensioni.

Questi oggetti-quadro mantenevano questa corrispondenza funzionavano ma dopo aver dipinto per un po’ per il gallerista (avevo un’esclusiva e mi sosteneva acquistando tutti i miei pezzi) cominciò a decidere cosa dovevo fare e voleva entrare in merito alle mie scelte non artistiche, ma strategiche ….

Contemporaneamente, in maniera spontanea, ho cominciato a esporre come “Ozmo”, ho iniziato a disegnare in strada e a fare interviste … e mi sono reso conto che questo aspetto più ludico, più leggero mi attirava di più.

Quando dipingevo ad olio utilizzavo i materiali più costosi, i colori ad olio migliori … prima facevo le fotografie, sceglievo le foto, selezionavo quelle da riprodurre in pittura, poi facevo una ricerca sul colore e cercavo i colori ad olio giusti e cominciavo il lavoro vero e proprio…un lavoro lunghissimo e costosissimo e anche faticoso. Ozmo era l’opposto e lavorava in maniera diversa … utilizzava materiali di recupero, carta, poster in pvc di pubblicità, teli da affisione che all’epoca rubavo in giro per la città (adesso invece me le regalano!) dipingendo su queste superfici di recupero, i pennarelli che uso sono quelli che si trovano normalmente in qualsiasi negozio di colori, gli Uniposca, e invece di lavorare su una ricerca basata sul colore, ho ridotto il tutto ad una dimensione assolutamente sintetica. Dall’aspetto spichedelico con immagini tra iperealismo e astrattismo sono passato ad una babele di segni, tra iconografie che si intrecciano che all’occhio dello spettatore suscitano una serie di storie possibili.

Street artist, outdoor, museo, art director, curatori, esposizioni … l’etichetta facile per un artista ibrido e mutevole è in agguato, ci si convive oppure occorre sempre avere una via d’uscita?

OZMO: Si forse è stata una via d’uscita… ma poi ci sono in qualche modo rientrato, nel senso che l’aspetto esteriore del lavoro può diventare un problema, qualsiasi certezza o abitudine diventa caratterizzante e di conseguenza limitante in termini di energie per andare avanti.

Occorre mettersi alla prova e cercare altre

vie e scopi che non sia semplicemente fare soldi, atteggiarsi a fare l’artista o esporre in una galleria … all’inizio si poteva pensare che questo fosse un punto d’arrivo ma mi sono reso conto che non erano le cose che mi soddisfacevano, non era quello che volevo veramente. I soldi non i ho più fatti (ride ndr.) e più che atteggiarmi ho preferito essere artista e la sfida è sempre aperta. Intanto ho fatto pace con la pittura, ho ricominciato a dipingere ad olio e reintrodotto il colore per cui di fatto adesso ho chiuso un po’ il ciclo. Una volta che ho esplorato l’aspetto grafico, il disegno, la pittura tradizionale ad olio (che poche persone hanno visto e conoscono) adesso la sfida prossima è quella di sintetizzare tutto questo e realizzare delle opere interessanti …

un’ officina di collaboratori che lavora per lui con stampanti e computer – mentre anche alla luce delle tue recenti collaborazioni i segni si intersecano e convivono (i lavori in collaborazione con Jeremy Fish)…

soprattutto per me. Mi sono sempre un po’ complicato la vita, non mi sono mai accontentato di fare lo stesso quadro, purtroppo o per fortuna il lavoro dell’artista è la ricerca, se lo fai sul serio e se non ci si accontenta di essere solo una “posa” e ti metti in discussione, riuscirà ad arricchirsi in quello che può scoprire di nuovo ma anche su quello che può scoprirà su se stesso …

Purtroppo il fattore economico fa la differenza e i numeri lo rappresentano … questo permette alle sottoculture di trasformarsi anche attraverso questi stimoli, non sono meglio di noi, ma loro hanno la possibilità di crescere e di supportare in tranquillità la ricerca e il lavoro.

siamo divertiti, lui è un gran professionista e da lui ho solo da imparare, poi gli americani hanno questo aspetto un po da “boscaioli”, arrivano fanno la loro posa, senza sbavature perfetta … può essere al massimo questi il loro difetto, di essere un po’ rigidi, nel sapere dove sanno già dove andare a parare, un po prevedibili.

La loro forza, rispetto a chi lavora in Italia è il numero di uternti a cui si rivolgono

… come nella musica o nell’arte se sei bravo a far qualcosa hai un audience di molto superiore a quella nostra… metti di creare un brano musicale e che questo venga donwlodato da 5 milioni di persone .. in Italia al massimo sono 5000 anche se il costo di una stampa è di 10 dollari per un tot di pezzi venduti riesci a camparci, in Italia non è sdoganato questo sistema.

Esiste un luogo impossibile dove lasciare un segno o una nuova sfida ..

OZMO: Fare tatuaggi

Size matters.

Whoever looks at a tiny screen (a smart-phone, a monitor or any deviated reality from the communication), never clashes with “images”.

Big or huge, such as facades of buildings or industrial angles, different surfaces at the mercy of reality, but also small, fierce or ironic icons emerging in anonymous corners of well-known streets.

They can also be as heavy as plaster, bricks, dust and paint, or as light as the rustle of strictly black markers. I present OZMO.

OZMO’s matter is a mixture of dirty and sacred symbols, a sophisticated game of both high and low quotations, like a mash-up between Bach and Public Enemy...

OZMO: I prefer Mozart ... I would like to mix him with Eminem.

In fact, I do not usually listen to hip hop, I have listened to some Italian rap, but I’ve

just started to understand the slang of the American one.

Deepening the research, I also discovered a root connected to the French troubadours, because Trinidad and Tobago islands (the places where Calypso was born) have been dominated by the French for a long time, then the influences I like Calypso music because it merges the of African, Creole and Cajum came; features of various sources much better Calypsonian from the ‘50s were inspired than other styles of music.The piece I have by French troubadours, the poets and pointed out (I always listen to strictly premusicians of the 1200 European Middle 70s Calypso music) sounds very naive, very Ages. Music and African rhythms blend folkloristic. Your stories, made of images, have a specific weight, “an evocative shape” (like you said in a recent interview), although they often have a formal synthesis, with absolute blacks and whites (my favorite ones are Universal Prejudices and the isolated icons running on a wall of the Attack Festival)...

OZMO: Well, black and white is the image’s backbone. You can reduce the appearance of painting, image can be reduced to design, the most succinct expression of the design is graphic, where the design is the most relevant element.

Your works arouse wonder, you can not stop memories, which make you recognize a Michelangelo damned or Mickey Mouse’s ears...

I’d like to think of it as a new Pop language, as something that reevaluates the viewing experience...

OZMO: I started working as OZMO in 2003, with an encyclopedic setting of images chasing each other, a mixture of contemporary and historical ones. That kind of research came immediately after my experience in the art world: I used to work for a gallery owner in Milan, for whom I painted very colorful and challenging pictures... I painted on large canvases pictures that I took with a digital camera, in situations of extreme darkness or brightness: images at once hyperrealistic and abstract. Those pictures

worked, but after having painted for that gallery owner for a while (we had an exclusive contract, he supported me by buying all my pieces), he wanted to decide what I had do, not only on an artistic level, but also on a strategic one...

At the same time, in a spontaneous way, I began to display my works as OZMO, I started drawing on the road and doing interviews... I realized that this was much more fun, and much lighter, and it attracted me much more.

When I used to paint with oil colors, I used the more expensive materials, the best ones... first I took the pictures and I chose the ones to copy in my paintings, then I did a search on the right oil colors and started the actual work... that was a very long, expensive and exhausting job.

OZMO was the opposite, he worked in a

different way... I used recycled materials, painting on paper and PVC advertising posters, which at the time I used to steal around the city (now they give them to me for free, instead!). The pens I use are those that you can find in any store, the Uniposca ones, and instead of working on a research based on colors, I reduced everything to something absolutely basic and essential. Starting from psychedelic images, between hyper-realism and abstraction, I switched to a Babel of signs, an intertwining iconography that, in the viewer’s eye, elicit a number of possible stories.

Is it possible to live with it, or is it better to always have a way out?

OZMO: Perhaps, it was a way out... but then I somehow went back, in the sense that the appearance of the work can be a problem, any certainty or habit becomes distinctive, and consequently limiting in terms of the energy needed to go ahead.

It is necessary to test yourself and try different ways and purposes, rather than just trying to make money, to pose as artist or to display in a gallery... at first you might have thought that this was a desirable goal, I soon realized that these

things did not satisfy me at all… that was not what I really wanted. I didn’t make money (he laughs), and rather then posing, I prefer to be an artist. The challenge is always open.In the meantime, I made ​​peace with painting, I started again to paint with oils and reintroduced the color. That actually ends a cycle.Once I’ve explored graphic design and traditional painting with oil (something that only few people have seen and know), now the next step is to synthesize all of this and create new, interesting works... especially for me! I’ve always made my own life a bit complicated, I have never been content to do the same painting over and over. In any case, an artist has to keep on researching, if he’s serious, and he’s not happy to just be a “pose”. Putting yourself in crisis, you’ll discover new things about art and, what’s more, about yourself...

Funky Madonnas, terrible tarots, intrusive sponsors and immortal works of art... however, you privilege the sign rather than the marketing, which is something that characterized the (now former) street artists. In Banksy’s film, Exit through the gift shop, Guetta creates a workshop where people work for him with printers and computers – also considering your recent collaborations, where signs intersect and coexist (I’m thinking about your works in collaboration with Jeremy Fish)...

OZMO: Only the wall-panting was created together, then we presented our works separately. Jeremy Fish is not a writer, he is a skater with a lot of experience in prints and underground graphic in the West Coast and in San Francisco, he never painted illegally, he didn’t grow up as a writer. It was a great show, we had fun, he’s a great professional and I can only learn from him. Americans have this “lumberjack” look, they come and make their installation without smudging, perfectly... this could be considered their limit: to be a little rigid, to know in advance where they are going, to be a bit predictable.Their strength, compared to those who work in Italy, is the number of users they serve... in music and art, if you’re good you could have an audience far greater than ours... for instance, if you create a piece of music, it could be downloaded by 5 million people, whereas in Italy there would be 5.000 at the most. Considering that the cost of a print is $ 10, there you could live on it, whereas in Italy this system doesn’t really work.Unfortunately, the economic factor makes the difference, and the numbers show it clearly... this allows subcultures to be transformed through these incentives.

They are not better than us, but they have the chance to grow and steadily support their research and their work.

In una realtà svuotata di senso, dove la facciata conta più della sostanza effettiva, dove ci si muove tra macerie, in cerca di un percorso possibile, di un sentiero sgombero, tra ostacoli e difficoltà, possiamo ancora sopravvivere attraverso le idee: quest'opera rappresenta l'elogio alle idee artistiche, creative e personali che sanno farsi spazio in una società capitalistica formattata e bugiarda.

Queste idee sono linfa vitale, rappresentano colore, movimento, contro l'immobilità intellettuale. Sono una speranza, un residuo luminoso che si fa strada attraverso le strade più buie della contemporaneità.

In a world deprived of any meaning, where the appearance is more important than the actual substance, where we move amid ruins in search of a possible, clean path, but full of obstacles and difficulties anyway, we can still survive through ideas.

This work is a praise to artistic, creative and personal intuitions, the ones that are still able to find their space in a capitalist, formatted, deceitful society.

These ideas are lifeblood, they represent color, and motion, against the intellectual stillness.

They are hopeful, luminous remains making their way through the darkest streets of contemporary times.

Thought in a hand_2012 Di che materia sono fatti i desideri?

Labili, a volte surreali, irrealizzabili, eppure desideriamo averli a portata di mano per poterli gestire con facilitĂ , plasmarli a nostro piacimento, realizzarli in fretta e poi goderne, consumarli, nutrirci. Ma come le nuvole spesso ci sfuggono dalle dita, perdono forma, si scompongono e si ricompongono, vivono di vita propria.

Ed il loro pensiero ci assilla, la loro libertà spesso ci ferisce, ci sembra di poterli toccare con mano, ma sono labili e come tali possiamo solo aspettare che mutino della stessa materia di cui è fatta la realtà .

Thought in a hand_2012 What are desires made of?

They are ephemeral, sometimes surreal, unattainable, and yet we want to have them in our hands, in order to manage them easily, mold them at our will, achieve them quickly and then enjoy them, consume them, feed ourselves with them.

But, just like clouds, they often slip away, they lose their shape, they decompose and recompose, living their own lives.

Often, thinking about them is a harassment for us, their freedom hurts, it looks like we can grab them, but they are evanescent, so we can only expect them to turn into such stuff as reality is made on.

My work is about the fluid boundary between the digital and real. Where real world environments can be overlaid with digital information and manipulation and change the relationship which we have with the real. It is my intention to explore this relationship through paint and to resolve these issues in the realm of fine art. I begin most of my work in photoshop where I stitch together digital images, QR code, blocks of colour as well as photographs that I have taken. This process allows me to have much more control of my compositions and allows me to move elements of the painting around on a fluid and instinctive level. Once I am happy with my composition I take my work into painting. Oil paint gives me the opportunity to have a much more personal relationship to my paintings I really believe in the poetry of the marks that can be made on the canvas with oil paint.

Despite my work being about the contemporary experience of technology I am inspired by a range of different artists from a range of different eras.

For instance the way I build up the layers in my work is heavily influence by my study of the Flemish old masters at the same time I am influence by the way contemporary artists such as Benjamin Edward's utilize code and technological symbols in their work.

Il mio lavoro riguarda il confine fluido tra digitale e reale. Dove gli ambienti del mondo reale possono essere rielaborati con informazioni e manipolazioni digitali, modificando, in questo modo, il loro rapporto con il reale. È mia intenzione esplorare tale rapporto attraverso la pittura e risolvere queste tematiche nel regno delle arti figurative.

Inizio la maggior parte delle mie opere in Photoshop dove assemblo immagini digitali, codici a barre, risme di colori e fotografie scattate da me.

Questo processo mi permette di esercitare un maggiore controllo sulle mie composizioni e di mettere in moto gli elementi del dipinto su un livello fluido e istintivo. Quando sono soddisfatto della mia composizione, trasferisco il mio lavoro sulla tela. I colori a olio mi danno l’opportunità di avere una relazione molto più personale con i miei dipinti. Credo veramente nella poesia dei segni che può essere composta sulla tela con i colori a olio.

Nonostante il mio lavoro sia rivolto all’esperienza contemporanea della tecnologia, sono ispirato da una gamma di diversi artisti, appartenenti a un ventaglio di epoche diverse. Per esempio il modo in cui realizzo gli strati nei miei lavori è fortemente influenzato dallo studio dei grandi maestri Fiamminghi e allo stesso tempo sono influenzato dal modo in cui gli artisti contemporanei come Benjamin Edward’s utilizzano codici e simboli tecnologici nelle loro opere.
