Reid Hoffman

TECH OPTIMIST AND BELIEVER IN NETWORK

8 ZAGALETA LIFE interview

A founding board member of PayPal, a co-founder of LinkedIn, and a partner at the Silicon Valley venture capital firm Greylock, Reid Hoffman deeply understands the potential of AI. He recognizes the transformative power of this technology and has been an active advocate for its responsible development and implementation. Hoffman believes that AI has the potential to augment human capabilities rather than replace them entirely. He emphasizes the importance of ethical considerations and the need for human judgment to guide AI systems effectively. Hoffman believes that regardless of the magnitude of the problem, whether it’s climate change or economic justice, 30 to 80% of the solution is technology. In other words, technology expands the range of possibilities and modifies the cost curves. It alters what you may be able to accomplish with the available resources.

“I’m beating the positive drum very loudly, and I’m doing so deliberately,” Hoffman says in response to a recent tech lash, a tendency of concentrating on the negativity and uncertainty about what technology is bringing versus the positive sides. Reid Hoffman has long been at the vanguard of the U.S. tech industry, from the early days of social media to the introduction of new artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT. His compelling perspective on artificial intelligence is simple: technology is here to improve our lives.

The 55-year-old serves on the boards of 11 tech companies, including Microsoft, which has bet heavily on artificial intelligence, and eight nonprofit organisations.

Greylock Partners has funded at least 37 artificial intelligence companies. He was one of the earliest investors in OpenAI, the most prominent AI startup, and recently resigned from its board of directors. He cofounded Inflection AI, an artificial intelligence chatbot startup.

Hoffman is a member of a select group of interlinked technology leaders who are at the forefront of the AI advance, many of whom also led the last internet surge. In addition to Elon Musk and Peter Thiel, he is a member of the so-called “PayPal Mafia” of former PayPal executives. The latter two supported DeepMind, an artificial intelligence startup that Google acquired, and all three were early OpenAI backers. Jessica Livingston, a co-founder of the startup incubator Y Combinator, also invested in OpenAI. OpenAI’s current CEO, Sam Altman, was formerly the president of Y Combinator.

Technology executives have been strongly pushing their different takes on artificial intelligence’s threats and opportunities. Hoffman, an untiring advocate of the virtues of AI, talks about it loud and clear. From blogs and interviews to talks to governments across the world, he carries the message, “The solutions live in the future, not

by enshrining the past”.

AI is an amplification intelligence and is here to help people better their circumstances—a goal behind all of Hoffman’s ideas and his mission to make a positive and lasting impact on the world. Hoffman believes AI is crucial to this objective and cites its potential to transform areas such as health care and education by “giving everyone a medical assistant” and “giving everyone a tutor,” respectively.

In March, he published his latest book, Impromptu: Amplifying Our Humanity Through AI, co-written with the AI tool GPT-4. “I wrote the first book on AI, with AI, just as a kind of a demonstration piece on this,” said Hoffman. More than half of it was produced with GPT-4. Hoffman finished the book in a little more than two months; “the amplification was real.”

Hoffman believes that warnings about AI posing an existential threat to humanity exaggerate the capabilities of the technology. According to him, any potential problems caused by AI, such as job loss, the fall of democracy, and economic disruption, have a straightforward solution: more technology.

The unabashed tech optimist believes that artificial intelligence and generative AI are the most significant technological advancements in our lifetime. In a recent interview with the Washington Post, Hoffman expands on Steve Jobs’ metaphor that computers are “the bicycle of the mind” by stating, “AI may now be the steam engine of the mind.”

“The future is sooner and stranger than you think,” noted Hoffman years ago. In his new podcast Possible, he looks at the most optimistic version of it and what it will take to achieve it. Each episode, co-hosted with Aria Finger, also showcases GPT-4, OpenAI’s most advanced and potent language model to date, as a guest.

Who is Reid Hoffman, whose brainchild, LinkedIn, has

9 interview ZAGALETA LIFE
“It’s nice to be happy. But the meaning of life is meaning—what’s the impact you’re having on the world. Suffering to accomplish that is a perfectly fine thing.” Reid Hoffman

become synonymous with professional networking? Launched in 2003, the platform aimed to connect professionals from various industries, allowing them to build meaningful relationships, seek job opportunities, and share industry insights. The idea struck a chord with millions of users worldwide, quickly propelling LinkedIn to the forefront of the social media landscape. Today, the platform boasts over 930 million members in more than 200 countries, serving as a digital bridge between professionals across the globe. Hoffman’s journey to success began with a strong academic background. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Symbolic Systems from Stanford University and a master’s in Philosophy from the University of Oxford as a Marshall Scholar. His original plan was to become an academic and write philosophical papers, helping others figure out who they wanted to be. Realising that this might not have a sufficient impact on the world, he decided to become a software entrepreneur.

Reid Hoffman is known for his affable, approachable nature and amiable personality. A natural networker, Reid believes that nurturing relationships, both personal and professional, can open doors to endless opportunities. His goal is to encourage all of us to “think about our lives as entrepreneurs”.

Successful at making money, he is indifferent to monetary success. Ten years after the sale of PayPal, he was still driving the same Acura he had bought with the sale’s money. “What makes the meaning of life is people, so you try to be good to people immediately around you and in your broader community. So a lot of my projects are about how I can affect the world in the hundreds of millions. I only spend money when it helps one of these vectors.” His only known weaknesses are two: fine dining and technology. He cannot resist computers, mobile phones, and very large monitors. “I’ve always been a fan of using very big monitors because I write an outline and then I write the thing next to it, and I write really quickly.”

Hoffman is not a huge fan of foundations because they are too risk-averse. He supports non-profits such as Kiva, Endeavor, CZI Biohub, the Berggruen Institute, New America, the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI, and the MacArthur Foundation’s Lever for Change. Hoffman has received various awards for his philanthropic work, including an honorary CBE from the Queen of England and the Salute to Greatness Award from the Martin Luther King Center.

Hoffman and his wife, Michelle Yee, have decided not to have children. He says that due to his heavy workload, he wouldn’t be able to commit to his children.

The rapid pace of technological innovation witnessed in recent years has unveiled a seemingly infinite array of possibilities. These transformative technologies reshape the economic landscape, disrupt traditional industries and pave the way for new ones to flourish. The World Economic Forum surveyed academics, industry leaders and futurists on innovative technologies and compiled the Top 10 Emerging Technologies of 2023 report featuring the most notable breakthroughs that will have a positive impact on society in the next three to five years.

15 tech ZAGALETA LIFE

01 Flexible Batteries

They are made of lightweight, bendable materials; they are now appearing in everything from wearable medical devices and sensors to flexible displays, smartwatches, and textile-based electronics.

Flexible batteries are made of lightweight, malleable materials and can be easily twisted, bent or stretched. Currently, several varieties of flexible batteries are available. They are rechargeable and feature lithium-ion or zinc-carbon systems mounted on conductive polymer current collectors.

Flexible batteries can be used in wearable medical devices, biomedical sensors, bendable displays, smartwatches and emerging textile-based electronics.

The global market for flexible batteries is anticipated to expand significantly to meet continuously rising demand not only for wearable devices but also for greater miniaturisation and flexibility of electronics.

Several firms are already working hard to develop and commercialise flexible battery technology. However, there are still opportunities for innovation in this field, and as technology improves, new competitors are expected to join the market.

16 ZAGALETA LIFE tech

Generative artificial intelligence

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) generates new and unique content by learning patterns in data. It employs human-inspired learning techniques and complicated algorithms. Soon, it will be used for much more than only producing texts, sounds, images and computer programmes. AI will very likely take over drug design, architecture and engineering.

In the sphere of education, AI can design tailored curriculum that adapts to student abilities and learning progress while fostering

critical thinking, sparking creativity and capturing innovative thoughts. In the workplace, the adoption of AI-based language models, such as ChatGPT, may boost productivity by shifting human duties from rough drafting to idea development and editing.

AI applications will have to adhere to agreed-upon professional and ethical norms, respect copyright and guarantee privacy. With all relevant safeguards in place, generative AI has the potential to increase creativity and effectively challenge traditional thinking.

17 tech ZAGALETA LIFE

Aviation has a large carbon footprint, accounting for 2% to 3% of global emissions. Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is one of the solutions that will help the aviation industry reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Produced from biological, such as biomass, and non-biological, such as CO2, resources, SAF makes up less than 1% of global jet fuel demand today. By 2040, this must increase to 13–15%. This expansion will necessitate the construction of 300–400 new SAF plants, and airlines, manufacturers and fuel companies are ready

to make this possible.

Since 2009, the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) has approved nine SAFs for blending at a ratio of up to 50% with traditional jet fuel. The approved SAFs are made from a variety of sources, including captured CO2, green hydrogen from renewable energy, plant oil, animal fat, etc. Other potential candidates are still in the developmental stage, including one that uses engineered bacteria to improve the SAF’s energy profile.

18 ZAGALETA LIFE tech
03 Sustainable aviation fuel Aviation remains one of the biggest drivers of the international economy.

04 Designer phages

Phages are viruses that selectively infect specific species of bacteria with their genetic information. Using tools from synthetic biology, it is possible to reprogram the genetic information of phages so that infected bacteria execute a bioengineered set of genetic instructions. Using bioengineered phages, scientists can alter the functions of a bacterium, causing it, for instance, to produce a therapeutic molecule or become sensitive to a certain drug.

Recent advances make engineering of the microbiome, the microbes

living on and within the body, beneficial to both human health and agricultural productivity.

Early promising results of engineered phage therapies are attracting substantial venture capital, which will facilitate clinical testing of engineered phages. Phage-based therapies utilising both natural and engineered phages will continue to emerge as a potent way to engineer microbiomes, thereby improving the health of humans, animals, and vegetation.

19 tech ZAGALETA LIFE
By reprogramming phages using laboratory tools, synthetic biologists can target individual bacterial species, thereby inducing them to produce therapeutic molecules.

Metaverse for mental health

Excessive screen time and social media use may adversely impact psychological well-being. However, screen time spent developing connections in shared virtual spaces, rather than contributing to the escalating mental health crisis, may help mitigate it. Virtual shared spaces are digital environments for professional and social interaction. The future of virtual shared spaces is commonly referred to as the metaverse, which may include virtual shared spaces with augmented or virtual reality (AR/VR) capabilities.

Currently, gaming platforms and non-invasive technologies such as electrode-containing headgear are being studied for therapeutic use. Metaverse will also be linked to neurotherapeutic technologies, such as direct brain stimulation for the treatment of intractable depression. Utilising the metaverse for a range of mental health care needs could be mutually beneficial: not only would patients benefit, but grounding the metaverse in a practical, essential application could propel the development of this innovative virtual space.

20 ZAGALETA LIFE tech 05
Virtual shared spaces may actually aid mental health.

06 Wearable plant sensors

According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, global food production must increase by 70% to feed the world’s population by 2050.

Wearable plant sensors have the potential to enhance plant health and agricultural productivity. These sensors are non-invasive, compact devices that can be affixed to crop plants for continuous monitoring of temperature, humidity, moisture and nutrient levels. Real-time data from plant sensors allows farmers to perform precise interventions

based on the needs of plants and helps to optimise crop yields, reduce the use of water, fertiliser and pesticides and detect early disease symptoms.

Wearable plant sensors are poised to revolutionise crop production and management despite obstacles such as the high cost of installation and maintenance, the difficulty of data interpretation, the need for improved data analytics tools and the unknown long-term effects of wearable sensors on plant growth and development.

21 tech ZAGALETA LIFE
The next frontier is wearable plant sensors - small devices that can attach to crops and continuously monitor temperature, humidity, moisture, and nutrient levels.

Spatial omics

Advanced imaging techniques with DNA sequencing, to map out biological processes at a molecular level.

Combining advanced imaging techniques with DNA sequencing, spatial omics maps molecular-level biological processes. This emerging technique enables the visualisation in unprecedented detail of formerly unobservable cell architecture and biological events, which can be utilised to create molecular-level “cell atlases” of various species. Spatial omics can have applications in therapeutic discovery, characterization of various cell types in tumours to customise treatment, unravelling the mechanisms of complex

diseases like Alzheimer’s disease and rheumatoid arthritis, and the study of infectious diseases.

Once there are answers to technological challenges in data gathering, processing, storage and standardised reporting, the market for spatial omics solutions will be able to reach its maximum potential. Rapidly evolving from a niche technique to one that is becoming widely employed, spatial omics could ultimately transform our understanding of biological systems and life’s mysteries.

Flexible neural electronics

Brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) use sensors to capture electrical signals from the brain in order to control machines.

Brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) utilise sensors to capture the electrical signals produced by the brain and interpret them into instructions that computers can execute. Currently, BMI-like systems are employed for treating epilepsy and in the field of neuroprosthetics. However, the rigid materials used in these probes often result in discomfort and scarring. In contrast, flexible circuits, which conform to the contours of the brain, offer superior performance compared to their rigid counterparts.

They hold the potential to advance our understanding of neurological conditions like dementia and autism, while also providing enhanced control over neuroprosthetic devices without requiring frequent recalibration. It is conceivable that future implantable devices, such as cardiac pacemakers, may also incorporate these flexible materials. Continued advancements in flexible BMI technologies may eventually pave the way for a true interface between humans and artificial intelligence.

23 tech ZAGALETA LIFE

Data centres, which facilitate Google searches, email, the metaverse, AI and a plethora of other components of an increasingly datadriven culture, use an estimated 1% of world electrical power. Net-zero-energy data centres could aid in the management of the environmental issue and are becoming a reality. Emerging solutions, such as liquid cooling systems that employ water or dielectric coolant to dissipate and repurpose harnessed waste heat, are being created to counteract heat issues. AI is used

to evaluate and optimise real-time energy use. The modular and demand-based technological infrastructure also contributes to netzero-energy objectives.

To achieve net-zero-energy data centres, novel approaches to combining the aforementioned methodologies with new electricity generation, storage and management technologies will be required. The flood of innovation and investment in this field provides ample reason for optimism about the future.

24 ZAGALETA LIFE tech
09 Sustainable computing Innovative computing solutions that promote sustainable energy use are being developed in response.

10 AI-facilitated healthcare

The COVID-19 epidemic highlighted flaws in public healthcare systems throughout the globe. This opened the door for the rapid integration of AI and machine learning (ML) into healthcare, both to predict and efficiently handle potential pandemics. AI-based solutions may help cut medical care wait times. The underlying reason for delays is often unequal access to existing resources, resulting in underutilization, rather than a lack of capacity. In some cases, the wait time for treatment can be reduced from many

months to only a few weeks.

The effect of AI-based healthcare might be much greater in underdeveloped countries, which often lack the infrastructure and staff to provide health services to a large portion of their populations. Despite present data privacy challenges, AI-based healthcare solutions will become more prevalent in the next three to five years, to the tremendous benefit of human health, especially for those in underprivileged regions.

25 tech ZAGALETA LIFE
These technologies can help anticipate and effectively address future health crises, and reduce wait times for medical care.

Ana de Armas

AND HER ROAD TO STARDOM

26 ZAGALETA LIFE
celebrities

“She’s going to be like Sophia Loren,” says Jamie Lee Curtis.

“One of those rare crossover worldwide sensations. She’s got this exquisite depth and is singularly gentle and insanely beautiful.”

She did not think she was going to be a Bond girl or Marilyn Monroe. “At the same time, I guess I kind of knew [it could happen] because that’s why I moved to L.A,” said Ana de Armas.

Ana de Armas speaks candidly about her experience in the limelight, having her life minimised to a cliché, and being weary of Los Angeles. She’s now one of Hollywood’s busiest and most sought-after actors. She co-starred with Ben Affleck in the erotic thriller Deep Water, which Adrian Lyne directed, as well as The Night Clerk with Helen Hunt and in Netflix’s political drama Sergio. She also played Marilyn Monroe in the movie Blonde. Not to mention her previous collaborations with Ryan Gosling (Blade Runner 2049) and twice with Keanu Reeves (Exposed and Knock Knock) that seem so long ago already.

Ana Celia de Armas Caso was born in the Cuban capital of Havana. Growing up in the little seaside town of Santa Cruz del Norte, she knew very little about life outside Cuba. The borders were closed, and the internet and television were both restricted. De Armas and her friends kept themselves and their neighbours entertained by putting on theatre shows and playing in a Spice Girls cover band—she was Baby Spice. It didn’t matter if no one understood the words or the meaning of Wannabe at the time. What mattered was that the passion for performing and pop culture had begun. Later, despite her parents’ efforts to persuade her otherwise, she enrolled in Havana’s famed National Theatre School. While still in school, at 16, she landed her first lead role in Una Rosa de Francia, directed by Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón.Realising the limited opportunities Cuban artists have in their homeland, de Armas decided to try her luck abroad. 200 dollars and a Spanish passport that she gained through her maternal grandparents brought her to Madrid. The 18-year-old was cast as Carolina in the television series El Internado. Set in an elite boarding school, the show became popular with viewers and made de Armas a celebrity figure in Spain. Starting to feel stuck in teen roles after six seasons of the show and several other Spanish-language movies,

27 celebrities ZAGALETA LIFE

What lies ahead for de Armas? The actor has resumed filming her upcoming action-thriller Ballerina directed by Len Wiseman and co-starring Keanu Reeves. It is the first spin-off of the John Wick franchise, set between the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019) and John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023). De Armas’s character, ballerina-assassin Rooney, chases down those who murdered her family. Ballerina is set to be released in the United States on June 7, 2024.

de Armas did not think twice when a Hollywood agent approached her with an offer of representation. And here she was, with her Spanish-only portfolio and no English but the goal of getting her foot in the door of Tinseltown. De Armas requested that her representatives send her to auditions, claiming that she did not come to Hollywood to study English. She stated on Saturday Night Live that she learned English through watching Friends and considered Chandler Bing the “greatest” instructor. Learning the lines phonetically, she made her Hollywood debut in Eli Roth’s thriller Knock Knock, starring Keanu Reeves, followed by Hands of Stone and War Dogs. De Armas’s portrayal of the holographic AI Joi in Dennis Villeneuve’s sci-fi blockbuster Blade Runner 2049, which won two Oscars, put the actor on billboards and, most importantly, placed her on the red carpet next to Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford. Her Hollywood breakthrough came in 2019 with a role in the murder mystery “Knives Out”. The role of immigrant nurse Marta Cabrera, who gets caught in the middle of a family murder investigation, earned de Armas 11 award nominations, including a Golden Globe and a Critics’ Choice. When Jamie Lee Curtis first met de Armas on set, her outlook on life and aspirations struck a chord with her. Later, she adds, “She is remarkable. She’s going to be like Sophia Loren, one of those rare crossover worldwide sensations. She’s got this exquisite depth and is singularly gentle and insanely beautiful, but also she is a girl from Cuba so there’s that tenacity and perseverance and fierceness to her.” A much better description of de Armas than the original synopsis of de Armas’s Knives Out role: “Latina caretaker, pretty”. No wonder the first instinct she had after reading the line was to refuse the role. Not wanting to be put in frames, she acknowledges that an occasional stereotype-laden role is fine, “so long as it’s not only that.” Like the one of a Bond girl in Cary

Joji Fukunaga’s No Time to Die. Fukunaga created the character of a Cuban CIA agent with de Armas in mind. And finally, there was Andrew Dominik’s Netflix biopic Blonde, based on Joyce Carol Oates’ book, in which de Armas played one of America’s most legendary icons, Marilyn Monroe. She spent a year working with a dialect coach, reading Oates’ book, and studying hundreds of images, videos, audio recordings, and films to prepare for the part. “I remember when she showed me a video of her screen tests for Blonde,” says Curtis. “I dropped to the floor. I couldn’t believe it. Ana was completely gone. She was Marilyn.” The critics were wowed. Catherine Bray of Empire called her performance “powerful”, and Richard Lawson of Vanity Fair noted, “De Armas is fiercely, almost scarily committed to the role, maintaining high and focused energy through every torrent of tears and screams and traumas.” She received nominations for the Academy Award for Best Actress, BAFTA, Golden Globe and SAG Award in the same category. While the wowed critics spill their praises, the actor focuses on what brings her joy away from work. “I like talking about life and art and babies and pets, says de Armas. “Acting is what I love to do, but I can’t talk about it, not all the time.” On Late Night With Seth Meyers, De Armas revealed that her dog Elvis played Marilyn Monroe’s pooch Mafia. “When I watch it, I don’t know how to feel because, of course, it’s a very serious important scene in the film. And then at the same time, I’m just looking at him and I’m melting,” de Armas said. Today, after fleeing LA following her finished romance with Ben Affleck, de Armas happily resides in Vermont in a newly acquired, fully furnished, six-bedroom, eight-bathroom home that sits on 30 acres of land. She is now dating Tinder executive Paul Boukadakis and has no remorse for leaving LA, the city that always kept her anxious.

32 ZAGALETA LIFE aviation
Stellantis and Archer Aviation join forces to manufacture Archer’s flagship electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, Midnight. Stellantis will work with Archer to stand up Archer’s recently announced manufacturing facility in Covington, Georgia (USA).
33 aviation ZAGALETA LIFE

Archer is designing and developing electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft for use in urban air mobility networks.

Archer is working to certify Midnight with the FAA in late-2024 and will then use it as part of its UAM network, which it plans to launch in 2025.

34 ZAGALETA LIFE aviation

This unique partnership in the urban air mobility industry will leverage each company’s respective strengths and competencies to bring the Midnight aircraft to market. Archer brings its world-class team of eVTOL, electric powertrain and certification experts, while Stellantis will contribute advanced manufacturing technology and expertise, experienced personnel and capital to the partnership. This combination is intended to enable the rapid scaling of aircraft production to meet Archer’s commercialization plans while allowing Archer to strengthen its path to commercialization by helping it avoid hundreds of millions of dollars of spending during the manufacturing ramp-up phase. The goal is for Stellantis to mass produce Archer’s eVTOL aircraft as its exclusive contract manufacturer.

As a further sign of its commitment, Stellantis will provide up to $150 million in equity capital for a potential draw by Archer at its discretion in 2023 and 2024, subject to the achievement of certain business milestones that Archer expects to occur in 2023. Stellantis also intends to increase its strategic shareholding through future purchases of Archer stock in the open market.

CARLOS ALCARAZ THE NEW KING OF WIMBLEDON

Winning Wimbledon Carlos Alcaraz is confirmed as number 1 in the world. The 20-year-old has won the most prestigious tournament in the world: it is only his fourth tournament on grass and he is the third youngest ever to triumph at Wimbledon. He was born in 2003, since that year, apart from 2020 skipped due to the pandemic, he has always won one of the fantastic four: Federer, Nadal, Murray and Djokovic.

“It’s a dream come true. It’s nice to win, but even if I had lost I would have been very proud of myself for having made the history of this tournament, playing in a final against a great player like Novak. I didn’t expect to arrive on these stages so soon: I’m very happy for me and for my team. It’s a dream to be at this level, especially for me as a 20-year-old boy.” He has practically already said it all after receiving from the hands of Kate, for the first time to award as Princess of Wales, and speaking before the heir to the British throne, Princes George and Charlotte, King Felipe of Spain (twice in grandstand and two victories for Alcaraz who always asks him to go) and in half Hollywood: Brad Pitt, Hugh Jackman, Emma Watson, Andrew Garfield, Daniel Craig.

Carlos Alcaraz was born on May 5, 2003 in El Palmar in Spain and is 20 years old.

Alcaraz began playing tennis at the age of three at his father’s school, who was also a professional tennis player. At the age of 15 he entered the distant part of the Equelite JC Ferrero Sport Academy of Juan Carlos Ferrero, former Roland Garros winner and world number 1, who thus became his coach.

Carlos made his ATP Tour debut, aged just 16, at the Rio Open in February 2020.

At the age of 17, Alcaraz made it to the main draw of

the Australian Open - he was the youngest participant in the men’s singles in this competition.

2021 was a breakthrough year for him, as he won his first ATP title in July at the Plava Laguna Croatia Open in Umag, beating Richard Gasquet in straight sets. 18-yearold Carlos became the tour’s youngest champion since 2008, and also the youngest Spanish champion at 17.

In 2022 Alcaraz became the youngest winner of an ATP 500 title. He then emerged victorious at the ATP Masters 1000 in Miami, beating Norwegian star Casper Ruud big time. With that triumph, he became the third youngest player to win an ATP 1000 event.

THE TUSCAN THEOREM AND THE MASTERY OF WINE MAKING

Their mission, although straightforward, carries the weight of ambition: to cultivate wines of a strong identity, deeply rooted in the territory. Following organic and minimalist viticulture practices, they aim to promote native grape varieties, enhancing those characteristics that truly embody the essence of Tuscan territories.”

Discover Arillo in Terrabianca, a distinguished Tuscan winery, owned by the Burkard family. In 2019, Adriana and Urs Burkard initiated a bold project, acquiring three diverse estates - Terrabianca in Chianti Classico, Il Tesoro in Maremma, and Colle Brezza in Val d’Orcia. They set a clear objective: crafting wines that embody a distinct regional character and a robust identity, strictly adhering to organic and minimalist winemaking principles.

The Burkard family’s rich legacy is intricately woven into the fabric of Arillo in Terrabianca. Their logo, a reinterpretation of the family’s crest, symbolizes their values. The two stars signify a bright future and their sons’ continuity, Gregor and Ricardo. The castle represents the family’s stability, and the three hills denote their triad of estates.

Adriana Burkard’s pioneering concept, “The Tuscan Theorem,” lies at the heart of their mission. This concept unites the unique charm, environmental diversity, and esteemed wine heritage of the three estates, forming a harmonious triangle across the varied terroirs of Chianti Classico, Maremma, and Val d’Orcia. Despite their distinctiveness, they all share a common pursuit: crafting wines of exceptional quality and character.

Ferrari Purosangue

The Ferrari Purosangue, thanks to its modern architecture, is a versatile car that effortlessly marries unparalleled comfort with the driving thrills that are a signature of all Ferraris. The ‘Purosangue’ (Thoroughbred) moniker perfectly encapsulates the car’s architecture: its sleek, athletic exterior is a radical departure from the styling of other four-door, four-seater cars on the market and pairs seamlessly with a luxurious cabin offering superb occupant space and comfort. The Purosangue is not just an exceptionally fast, nimble car – it is also the first Ferrari four-seater with the volume to guarantee all occupants an exceptionally comfortable on-board experience.

The Purosangue has a mid-front-mounted engine with a gearbox at the rear to create a sporty transaxle layout. The Power Transfer Unit (PTU) is coupled in front of the engine to provide a unique 4×4 transmission. This delivers exactly the 49:51% weight distribution that Maranello’s engineers deem optimal for a mid-front-engined sports car. It is the only car with these proportions to sport a midfront-mounted, naturally-aspirated V12. Maranello’s most iconic engine debuts in this brand-new configuration to ensure the car unleashes more power than any other in the segment (725 cv) while guaranteeing the most enthralling Ferrari engine soundtrack. Furthermore, it can deliver 80% torque even at low revs for unique driving pleasure at all times. The engine (code-named F140IA) maintains the architecture that made the Prancing Horse’s most

recent 12-cylinders so successful, i.e., a 65° angle between its cylinder banks, a 6.5-litre capacity, a dry sump and high-pressure direct injection. It was designed, however, to produce the highest amount of torque at low revs possible without losing the feeling of linear, never-ending power typical of Ferrari’s naturally-aspirated V12s. 80% of the maximum torque is on tap at just 2100 rpm and it peaks at 716 Nm at 6250 rpm. The maximum power of 725 cv is reached at 7750 rpm and throttle response is characteristic of a real sports car. Intake, timing and exhaust systems have been redesigned, while the cylinder heads are derived from the 812 Competizione. Huge attention was lavished on improving mechanical and combustion efficiency by employing Formula 1-inspired calibration concepts. The result is that the most powerful engine ever developed by Ferrari

43 automotive ZAGALETA LIFE

for a four-seater car is also the most powerful in its segment. The layout of the 8-speed, oil-bath dual-clutch transmission was optimised through the adoption of a dry sump and a significantly more compact clutch assembly, shaving 15 mm off the installed height in the car, which, in turn, lowers the centre of gravity by the same amount. The new clutch’s performance is 35% higher, transmitting up to 1200 Nm of dynamic torque during gear shifts. Thanks to new-generation actuation hydraulics, clutch fill times are now faster, so total gear shift times have been reduced compared

to the previous 7-speed DCT. New gear ratios mean the spacings are shorter and more progressive, and a longer top ratio is geared for greater economy in motorway driving. Down shifts have been calibrated to optimise smooth shifting, focusing on driving pleasure and emphasising the sound of the new V12 engine. The F140IA’s soundtrack is typical Ferrari, with unmistakable subtle V12 harmonics, until the driver accelerates hard: as the engine approaches the 8250 rpm red-line, there’s an enthralling crescendo that reaches its pinnacle at the kind of high revs only Ferrari’s engines can deliver.

The reveal of Sweptail in 2017 marked the dawn of the contemporary coachbuilding movement. RollsRoyce had many clients asking for custom vehicles of their own, leading the company to create a full-on coachbuilding division.

Within this group, three particular patrons with a deep appreciation of contemporary nautical design, especially J-Class yachts, had very similar visions of what they wanted. After four years of development, the new Boat Tail was born.

The three Boat Tails share a common body, but each is individually, highly personalised, reflecting the confluence between the vision, capability and unparalleled ambition of the marque and each of the commissioning patrons.

The blue one, the protagonist of this article, is the first of the three Coachbuilt Boat Tails. The Boat Tail is based on Rolls-Royce’s own Architecture of Luxury, a modular platform that underpins the current Phantom, Cullinan and Ghost.

Once the preliminary design proposal is penned by hand, the discovery of the form is enabled with a full-sized sculpture in clay, allowing hand-crafted manipulation of the expansive surfaces to perfect its shape.

The clay sculpture is digitally remastered, from which the buck is created onto which aluminium sheets are hammerformed by hand.

Akin to yacht building, a pure form, monolithic in scale and uninterrupted by panel breaks, is created.

Rolls-Royce

46 ZAGALETA

The most eyecatching feature of this vehicle is the enormous, handpainted Azur blue bonnet, graduating down to a lighter shade. Up front, a painted RollsRoyce pantheon grille replaces the traditional stainlesssteel finish.

The 15-speaker Bespoke Rolls-Royce Audio System utilises the entire Boat Tail’s floor structure as the resonance chambers for the sound system’s bass speakers, creating an exceptional audio experience for the patrons.

The fascia is distilled in its appearance, purposefully reduced to provide a modern aesthetic. This minimalist canvas accentuates the jewel-like features of the BOVET 1822 timepieces specifically commissioned by the client.

The interior leather reflects the bonnet’s colour tone transition: the front seats in a darker blue hue, recognising Boat Tail’s driverfocused intent and the rear seats in a lighter tone.

The deck opens in a sweeping butterfly gesture to reveal an intricate and generous hosting suite. Its complex movement was inspired by cantilever concepts explored by renowned architect Santiago Calatrava.

The chest is appointed with the perfect accoutrements for a true Rolls-Royce al fresco dining experience; one side is dedicated to aperitifs, the other, cuisine, complete with cutlery engraved with the name ‘Boat Tail’, made by Christofle.

Boat Tail

“Boat Tail is unprecedented. Boat Tail is a distinct counterpoint to industrialised luxury,” says Alex Innes, Head of Rolls-Royce Coachbuild Design, Rolls-Royce. “It is not just the method to reach a destination, but the destination itself.”

Rolls-Royce Boat Tail presents a wonderful new aesthetic for the marque, balancing previously unseen levels of sculpture with discrete, sometimes playful functionality. Boat Tail is a fully homologated, roadlegal motor car that was created to be driven, it was only fully released by the marque once it had undergone the same rigorous dynamic testing as all other Rolls-Royces, including high speed analysis to ensure the contents of the rear hosting suite are sufficiently fastened and therefore silent under power. Indeed, each client has stipulated that they wish to drive their Boat Tail immediately upon receipt. At nearly 5.8 m long, its generosity of proportion and clarity of surface present a graceful and relaxed stance. The front profile is centred on a new treatment of Rolls-Royce’s iconic pantheon grille and lights. A strong horizontal graphic with deep-set daytime running lights forms

Boat Tail’s intense brow line and frames classical round headlamps, a design feature recalled from the design archives of Rolls-Royce. In the profile, nautical references are very suggestive. The wraparound windscreen recalls the visor on motor launches, while the gentle rearward lean of the A-pillar, the large, crisp volumes at the front and the tapered rear create a gesture that recalls a motor launch rising out of water under power. A progressive negative sculpture in the lower bodyside creates a lithe impression while making a historical reference to the running boards of heritage Rolls-Royce designs. Viewed from the dead rear, the body resolves in a gentle sharpening of the form. As with the front, a horizontal emphasis is established at the rear with wide, deep-set lamps – a break from the expected vertical Rolls-Royce lamp iconography. Indeed, it is at the rear where the nautical references become more apparent. The aft deck, a modern interpretation of the wooden rear decks of historical Boat Tails, incorporates large swathes of wood. Caleidolegno veneer is applied in a feat of Rolls-Royce engineering; the grey and black material, which is typically housed

in the interior, has been specially adapted to be used on the exterior, with no compromise to the aesthetic.

The open pore material features a linear wood grain which is visually elongated by brushed stainless steel pinstripe inlays, serving as an optical nod to the typical wooden construction of yachts – both old and new. The veneer treatment extends to the lower transom area resolving the taper and overall volume astern. From the rear, one perceives a strong graphical composition marked by further horizontal emphasis, accentuating Boat Tail’s great width. Deep-set lamps establish a dramatically low reference point, evoking the dipped stern and proud bow of a motor launch under power and on plane.

An explicit architectural influence is discovered in Boat Tail’s unconventional fixed-canopy roof. Adding to the sculptural form, the sweeping roofline concludes in delicate structural elements that touch down on the rear, redolent of flying buttresses. Of course, if inclement weather is encountered while the roof is removed, a temporary tonneau is stowed for static transitory shelter.

TUXEDO ALLURE AND SOPHISTICATION

When it comes to formal attire, few garments can match the elegance and charm of a tuxedo. With its sleek silhouette, refined details, and enduring allure, the tuxedo has become synonymous with sophistication and class.

The tuxedo, also known as a dinner jacket or black tie, became popular in the late 19th century in the fashionable circles of England and the United States. Its inception is credited to a gentleman named Henry Poole, a renowned Savile Row tailor, who introduced a shorter jacket to be worn with formal trousers in 1865. This design innovation provided a more comfortable alternative to the traditional tailcoat and soon gained popularity among the fashion-conscious elite. The name came later, from Pierre Lorillard’s Tuxedo Club in upstate New York. Ironically, the tuxedo was originally considered an informal dinner jacket. Over the years, the tuxedo underwent subtle modifications and refinements, evolving into the quintessential black tie attire we recognize today. Notable developments include the addition of satin lapels, silk facings, and the iconic bow tie. The cummerbund, a pleated sash worn around the waist, serves both a practical and aesthetic purpose. Originally designed to hold opera tickets, the cummerbund evolved into a stylish accessory that

conceals the waistband, giving the ensemble a more polished look.

While the classic black tuxedo remains a perennial favourite, contemporary fashion has expanded the repertoire of tuxedo variations, allowing individuals to express their style. Variations include midnight blue tuxedos, coloured accents on lapels and pocket squares, and alternative fabric choices such as velvet or jacquard. Furthermore, the concept of the tuxedo has transcended gender boundaries. The rise of genderfluid fashion has prompted a surge in tuxedoinspired designs for women, blurring the lines between traditional menswear and womenswear. This development not only embraces inclusivity but also highlights the tuxedo’s timeless appeal and adaptability. The suave fictional spy, James Bond, has cemented the tuxedo’s association with timeless elegance. Whether it’s Sean Connery’s classic white dinner jacket or Daniel Craig’s sleek midnight blue ensemble, Bond’s affinity for tuxedos has made them an iconic part of his cinematic legacy.

The tuxedo’s significance extends well beyond its aesthetic appeal. Wearing a tuxedo is a statement of refined taste and adherence to formal etiquette. It conveys an air of timeless elegance, confidence and respect for the occasion.

JAMES WELLOCK

Entrepreneur and former owner of Wellocks

James Wellock together with his wife Jo and children Sally and Ralph grow a family business that became the leading food service supplier in the UK, supplying the best hotels, restaurants and sporting venues in the country from Skibo Castle in the north of Scotland down to Padstow in the very southern part of England on a daily basis. The business was sold 5 years ago and the family have invested in food businesses in their local area that have been struggling. Their restaurant with rooms, The Angel at Hetton achieved a Michelin star within its first year of their takeover

Seen from the outside, one might think of you as someone successful. Do you consider yourself a high achiever?

I haven’t been asked this question before. We took our business in the UK from a very localised company with 17 employees including me to a Nationwide organisation with over 550 people employed that was recognised as being the best in its sector. So yes I think we achieved our goals with the company.

Knowing what you know now, is there anything you would have done differently when you were first starting out?

No I don’t think so, I believe that every experience, good or bad is there for a reason and there are things to learn from every experience. Maybe if it hadn’t been for the adversities that we had in the early years we wouldn’t have achieved as much.

What was the hardest decision you ever had to make?

When we first took control of the business there was an equal partner, after about 10 years it became clear that we were very different people and had polar opposite ambitions for the business and life in general. I took the decision to break the partnership for the good of the company, it was the most difficult thing to do as the partner was my brother.

What have been some of your biggest learning experiences?

Our daughter Sally, asked me if I would take part in the marathon des sables with her, I was

someone who was not a runner ever but I agreed that we should do it together. I then had to train and make sure I could complete a 250km foot race in 7 days across the Sahara desert and not let her down, I was in my fifties when we took part and we did complete it but it was an 18 month journey of training hard and not very much of a social life! With the right mindset there isn’t anything you can’t do.

What is the underrated personality trait you need to live your best life?

Be dependable and honest to the people in your life and remain open-minded. Try never to have to think if only…

Which books motivate you? Which lecture or phrase inspires you?

Natural Born Heroes by Christopher Mcdougal was a book I read and referred back to while training for my races. It is a heroic true story that changed the outcome of the 2nd World War but then analyses how they actually achieved these amazing feats of strength and endurance.

I was taught as a child to treat people how you would like to be treated yourself and we have brought our children up with this same ethos.

What does your Zagaleta home have that soothes your soul and inspires your daily work?

The views of the mountains and the sea, the tranquility and sense of wellbeing that Zagaleta invokes gives a clarity of mind and an amazing place to relax and truly enjoy life and be your best self.

ANDREW BEVERLEY

British ex-soldier, lawyer, banker and businessman.

Andrew and his wife Isabelle (British and French respectively) met in London and have been married for over 25 years. They are grateful to have two wonderful sons, Max (21) and Sam (19), both students in the UK.

A keen rugby player in his youth, more recently, Andrew has been able to indulge his passion for racing classic cars across Europe. He will race for the last time at the Le Mans Classic Centenary celebrations in June.

After obtaining his law degree from Oxford, he graduated from Sandhurst and served 6 years as an Infantry Officer. After the Army, he went back to law, becoming a partner in Linklaters’ London office before joining a client, Morgan Stanley, in a business role in a principal finance team. In 2008, seeing that opportunities at MS would be limited, with two colleagues, he established a small, independent principal finance boutique, which he enjoyed enormously before retiring a few years ago.

Seen from the outside, one might think of you as someone successful. Do you consider yourself a high achiever?

Life has been very kind to me in so many ways and I have achieved more than I hoped for when embarking on my career. Compared to many, however, I have achieved little: I will leave no mark in any history, nor any great legacy, but I am satisfied with what I have done and very appreciative of my lot, fully content with my wonderful family and excited about the next phase of life.

Knowing what you know now, is there anything you would have done differently when you were first starting out?

I am not a great one for looking over my shoulder and asking too many questions about the past. Time is an arrow that flies in one direction! I don’t think it is particularly healthy to spend time on potential “Sliding Doors” moments. I suspect that all the old roads I stumbled along would have led to here, having regard to the opportunities, state of my experience, character development and drives at the relevant times: how can one imagine changing one thing, without changing everything else as well? That said, I am sure that there are many, many things that I should have done differently. Wish I had found an entrepreneurial spirit earlier in life, but that is a little like wishing I had been better looking or taller! The main trick is to concentrate on maximising one’s talents and opportunities. Overall, I am happy with how I did on that measure.

What have been some of your biggest learning experiences?

I think my most valuable experiences were gained in the military. Specifically, seeing the importance of will and morale on performance and also recognising what is real fear and, therefore, what it is not. This understanding helped with perspective in many high-

pressure situations professionally, on a sports field or on a racing circuit. That said, I have not been able to bring it to bear on the golf course: I too frequently crack and duff it in the water faced with a carry.

What is the underrated personality trait you need to live your best life?

Moral courage is really important and quite rarely seen, particularly in public life where we all suffer its absence. It helps provide discipline and a guide to conduct, to bring clarity in analysis before making a difficult decision and it also provides support in dealing with the consequences. It is both rod and staff. When we fall short, as we all do, it is quite difficult to be happy with what we have done or how we have behaved.

Which books motivate you? Which lecture or phrase inspires you?

I have always been an avid reader so picking one book is quite difficult. One can see most of humanity in Shakespeare’s plays still. John Fowles’ Magus is an odd choice, but it so powerfully transports me back to adolescence and a long summer in Spetses chatting with friends about life ahead and what kind of men we would become. Any of Robert Graves’ historical narratives is worth a read and The White Goddess is an astonishing workprobably more interesting than accurate and of no use in the modern world!

What does your Zagaleta home have that soothes your soul and inspires your daily work?

The richness of the lush, mature garden provides an intimate and even exotic retreat from the cares of the world. The views into the mountains give perspective, scale and relief. We are immersed in a beautiful environment and endlessly refreshed by it whilst wanting for nothing, except perhaps a better golf swing and handicap.

Seen from the outside, one might think of you as someone successful. Do you consider yourself a high achiever?

I think that it depends on how you define success and high achiever. I have been so lucky in my life to work and focus on matters and areas that have my highest interest; that is to develop and make available innovative treatment options for the rare disease population, that can increase their life expectancy and improve their and their family’s quality of life to make it possible to live a fulfilling life. We are talking about a neglected patient population, who are in desperate need for both diagnosis and treatments for their rare diseases. Serving this under-served population have a significant impact on societal health.

Knowing what you know now, is there anything you would have done differently when you were first starting out?

The short answer is: “not really”. Having said that, I have made a lot of mistakes, of which I have learned a lot. My professional life has continuously been a learning journey, where I have been so privileged to work with many talented people, the 4P’s, as I call them: People with Passion and Pride in Performance. By working with many talents, I have been able to not only depend on and use the brain, that I have, but to use all the brains that I have been given access to.

What was the hardest decision you ever had to make?

Being a trained surgeon, it took me long time, may be too long time, to decide on whether to pursue an academic career within surgery or a business career. I discussed this dilemma not only in my family but also with a lot of friends. One of my good friends, the former Head of the Orphan Drug Office at FDA said to me: “Think about it, every time you go to work with the feeling that the work you are doing potentially will make a significant difference in the life-expectancy for the under-served rare disease

population and their families”. This was an important part of my decision making, and a driving force ever since, and it proved to be the right decision for me to be part of trailblazing of the whole Orphan Drug space and develop and make available Orphan Drugs. Without the support and understanding of my family on this career shift, it would never have been possible. I owe them a lot of thanks.

What have been some of your biggest learning experiences?

Coming from a small town in a rural district in Denmark, it has been extremely rewarding, though challenging, to work and collaborate with all stakeholders (governmental bodies, universities, academic institutions, pharma and biotech leaders, patient organizations) all over the world with the overall purpose to develop innovative therapeutic options that satisfies unmet medical needs for a patient population that is in desperate need for access to treatments.

What is the underrated personality trait you need to live your best life?

To live the best life both professionally and privately, you need to embrace the challenges, be openminded, inclusive, adaptive, and agile, and continuously apply prudence and humbleness in whatever you do. Inviting people for your passion in life and enrol them in your ambitions are extremely powerful.

Which books motivate you? Which lecture or phrase inspires you?

I have had great motivation being inspired by books like Peter Sims: “Little Bets” on how breakthrough ideas emerge from small discoveries; Jim Collins: “Good to Great” on why some companies make the leap and others don’t. Also, there is a Spanish poet - I forgot his name – who said: “There is no path for you to walk, you lay the path in walking”,a very powerful sentence and worth remembering when you open up new horizons.

HOLLY GRENFELL

Cosmetic Scientist & European Union Safety Assessor

After graduating from UC Berkeley, Holly embarked on her over 40-year career in the skin care business, working in Executive positions with the most professional global companies in the industry. After over 13 years with the Estée Lauder Companies, she was promoted as Senior Director and moved to Europe to a new Division of Lauder called Origins, with responsibility for launching Europe, Africa & the Middle East. She was Managing Director of the Skin Science Center and Cosmeceutical Product Developer. She continued to work with Dermatologists starting her own company, White Lab and then was named to Orifame’s Global Skin Care Expert Panel, . Holly enjoys golf, hiking, bocce & long-distance ice-skating on Sweden’s frozen lakes, and even occasionally “shaking it up” at parties with her hidden talent, belly dancing.

Seen from the outside, one might think of you as someone successful. Do you consider yourself a high achiever?

Gosh that’s tough when there are people who have really done great accomplishments, but in my own small way, I feel happy in pursuing a field of work that I am passionate about – skin care. Even today, after 40 years in the industry, skin still fascinates me with its ability to regenerate, renew itself & protect us and all the new active ingredients to discover. Besides any recognition I’ve had has been more than a team effort with lots of fun had in the process.

Knowing what you know now, is there anything you would have done differently when you were first starting out?

Well, I’ve basically had two careers in cosmetics, one in sales and one in science. After University at UC Berkely, I started in marketing & sales at Clinique. When we visited the Research Center I always wished that was me in the white lab coat. So, at the age of 50 I decided to go back to school and get a graduate degree in Cosmetic Science studying physiology, statistics and emulsion science, then on to studying clinical testing & toxicology and becoming a Product Safety Assessor for the EU. The thing is I doubted myself when I was young, didn’t think I could cut in hard sciences but I found out I was pretty good at it. So don’t believe the myths, it’s never too late.

What was the hardest decision you ever had to make?

Upending my entire life in California and moving to Sweden. It was a leap of faith after meeting my charming Swede Henrik, to change country, culture, language –just about everything. Luckily, I was able to stay with Estée Lauder and was promoted to a new division to launch in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. And back to Henrik, I’m happy to report that the spark we felt when we met briefly that summer at Oxford University is still very much alive today, 26 years later.

What have been some of your biggest learning experiences?

Disasters big and small! Well, I guess I would say more errors and mistakes that you learn from, register and become wiser. Skin care product development is complicated, trying to get every element right from packaging, to ingredient story, formulation, regulatory is an agonizing process. Leaving the many layers of

a large organization and starting your own company. It’s was only me to blame for printing the wrong text on 300,000 cartons! You know the quote “mistakes are painful when they happen but years later the collection is called experience”

What is the underrated personality trait you need to live your best life?

Curiosity. People who are interested and ask questions are open. Learning new things and discovery reminds us we don’t have all the answers and often, perhaps too many assumptions and biases. Curiosity gets us out of our comfort zones, a bit into the unknown and expands our empathy with people. I certainly can’t take the credit but love the quote that a mind that is open to new ideas never returns to its original size.

Which books motivate you?

“I am Malala” (Yousafzai). She stood up for girl’s right to education at the risk of her life. So brave and instead of being angry, in her gentle way, she persevered and shook the world. Now her foundation is helping establish educational programs in many areas in the world where opportunities did not exist before. Wow!

Which lecture or phrase inspires you?

In Sweden we have each December, the famous Nobel prize winners for fields like Medicine, Physics or Chemistry. During this beautiful ceremony they give their acceptance speech, and you hear these incredibly brilliant people who have spent years over a microscope dedicated not to fame or fortune but to solving a problem and helping humanity. Imagine working out the human genome sequence and being so humble and always giving credit to everyone else.

What does your Zagaleta home have that soothes your soul and inspires your daily work?

Zagaleta is like having your own private golf course you share with your friends. After retirement, one struggles a bit to find new meaning, the next step, a community. I was so touched the first week I was here and my phone pinged with welcome messages from 11 different countries - very international. But I think it’s the magical combination of mountains and dreamy views of Gibraltar with zero traffic noise. I open the windows, hear the rustle of pines and palms and think, hum, maybe I’ll start a new project or maybe just work on my golf game….

JOY ALCHEMIST

With the highest number of esteemed Best Craftsmen in France, Baccarat continues to write its sparkling story. In 1764, in the eastern reaches of France, a collective of artisans set out on a quest to transform the fundamental elements of nature—earth, air, fire, and water—into glass of unparalleled excellence.Years and many alchemical experiments later, they honed their secret formula for achieving the purest crystal known to mankind: Baccarat, a magical substance capable of transforming the energy of the elements and humanity into a wellspring of universal delight.Today, Baccarat is setting new trends in hospitality. From the enchanting streets of Paris to the bustling metropolises of New York,Tokyo, Miami, and Hong Kong, the essence of Baccarat’s art de vivre can be discovered within its exquisite Houses, boutiques, restaurants, bars, hotels, and lounges.

The opening of the Baccarat Hotel New York marks the brand’s new evolution into a perfectly crafted lifestyle and hospitality brand. Baccarat Hotel New York, owned by China-based Insurer Sunshine Insurance Group and managed by SH Hotels & Resorts, is the first hotel and global flagship for the more than two-hundred-and-fifty-year-old Baccarat crystal brand. Directly across the street from the Museum of Modern Art and steps away from Fifth Avenue’s legendary shopping, the Forbes Five Star hotel occupies the first 12 floors of the split-level tower that rises 550 feet above West 53rd Street. Glowing inside and

out, the lower levels of the hotel are veiled by a 125-foot-wide corrugated crystal-like curtain. “Entering the lobby, guests are greeted by a mesmerising 20-by-25-foot wall adorned with more than 2,000 of Baccarat’s most iconic glasses, the Harcourt. Each custom-sized glass has been laid horizontally and lit by an LED light to create a 24-hour light show,” says Barry Sternlicht, Chairman and CEO of Starwood Capital Group, the parent of SH Hotels & Resorts, a lifestyle hotel brand management company that manages the hotel. Seventeen custom chandeliers hang throughout the Baccarat Hotel New York – many suspended by rough cord rope – while one stand-out chandelier is made exclusively out of wood and hangs in the second-floor bar. Selected classic and reinterpreted pieces from the brand’s archival and contemporary collections are also displayed in towering vitrines on the second story.

THE HOTEL’S INTERIORS WERE CONCEIVED BY FRENCH DESIGN DUO GILLES & BOISSIER TO COMBINE THE CLASSIC ELEGANCE OF A PARISIAN HÔTEL PARTICULIER WITH THE CONTEMPORARY AESTHETIC OF ITS MIDTOWN NEW YORK CITY LOCATION. GILLES & BOISSIER, ALONGSIDE STARWOOD CAPITAL’S OWN DESIGN TEAM, DESIGNED MANY OF THE HOTEL’S FURNISHINGS INCLUDING COMMISSIONING SEVERAL NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN WORKS FROM THE BACCARAT FACTORIES. Dazzling and seductive, the Baccarat Bar at Harrods fuses Harrods glamour with Baccarat’s legendary craftsmanship. “In the crystalline interiors, the gentle nuances of light play create a magical experience elevated by innovative cocktails,” says Cameron Attfield, Baccarat Bar Manager.

THE INTERIORS, DESIGNED BY FABLED STUDIO, ENHANCE THE BEAUTY OF BACCARAT’S HANDMADE CREATIONS. THE BAR HAS BEEN CREATED AROUND THE IDEA OF BEING A ROOM WITHIN MAISON BACCARAT IN PARIS, PAYING HOMAGE TO THE FORM AND PATTERN OF SOME OF THE BRAND’S MOST CELEBRATED PIECES.

72 ZAGALETA LIFE interview SWISS CEO DIETER VRANCKX ZAGALETA LIFE exclusive interview

Dieter Vranckx, a dual Swiss-Belgian citizen, has been CEO of SWISS since 2021. He has achieved the turnaround of SWISS and will further refine and develop the business model and the sustainability strategy due to changed market structures. He has worked for SWISS and the Lufthansa Group in various management positions for about 25 years, in Europe as well as in Asia and America.

His degree in industrial engineering in 1997 was followed by an MBA from the Solvay Business School Brussels, later a General Management Program at the London Business School and an Advanced Management Program at the IMD Business School Lausanne.

Dieter Vranckx is a member of various boards of directors. He is currently Chairman of the Board of Edelweiss Air AG, a member of the Board of the Swiss-US and German-Swiss Chambers of Commerce and a member of the Steering Committee of the Europa Forum. He is married, has two children and lives with his family in Switzerland.

Could you provide an overview Swiss International Airlines and its current position in the aviation industry ?

SWISS is Switzerland’s largest airline and part of the Lufthansa Group as well as a member of the Star Alliance, the world’s largest network of airlines. We connect Switzerland with the world with direct flights from the national airports of Zurich and Geneva.

After the pandemic we returned to profitability in 2022 despite numerous challenges. Optimized cost structures, stable summer flight operations and favourable market conditions all made major contributions to the positive business performance. We achieved an exceptionally strong operating profit for the year of 456 million SWISS francs, an improvement of almost 900 million SWISS francs on the prior-year result.

What differentiates Swiss International Air lines from other competitors in terms of services, routes, and overall customer experience ?

As Switzerland’s largest airline, SWISS embodies its home country’s traditional values, such as reliability and hospitality, is dedicated to delivering the highest product and service quality and has set itself ambitious CO2 goals. We care about a personalised customer experience that meets the needs of the individual passenger.

In terms of culinary experiences on board, the focus is on high-quality and regional products. With SWISS Saveurs and SWISS Taste of Switzerland we offer award-winning concepts, in collaboration with renowned Swiss partners and excellent Swiss cooks.

Furthermore, SWISS operates one of the most modern and youngest fleets in Europe and is the only renowned airline to offer First Class on all long-haul flights.

With over 100 direct connections in 50 countries, SWISS has a very diverse, attractive route network. The hub system, organised in optimised arrival and departure waves, also offers transfer passengers short connecting times and good connections.

In recent years, Málaga has become an increasingly popular destination. How has your airline capitalized on this trend and what unique features or services do you offer to passengers traveling to Málaga?

Spain, and Andalusia in particular, is a popular leisure region, and there are also many people from Spain living in Switzerland who want to visit their friends and relatives.

73 interview ZAGALETA LIFE

Business travelers have interesting direct connections to the Swiss financial center, and customers can also reach many attractive destinations in Europe and overseas from Màlaga with short connecting times in Zurich.

Can you tell us about any upcoming developments or initiatives that your airline has planned for Málaga, whether it’s new routes, increased capacity, or enhanced customer experiences ?

We are highly satisfied with our service to Màlaga at present but will continue to monitor the market closely and make adjustments to our flight program to Màlaga if necessary. We can say at this stage that we will be offering more frequencies next winter than in the previous one.

Business travelers often have specific needs and expectations when flying. How does Swiss International Air Lines cater to the business class passengers, and what amenities or services do you offer to ensure a comfortable and productive journey ?

Our Business Class guests benefit from various special services such as extra baggage, priority check-in and boarding, access to our exclusive lounges, additional menu choices and much more.

The service is individual and designed to meet the personal requirements of our guests. For example, the guest can choose the timing of the meals.

The Business seat on Longhaul Flights is spacious, offers privacy and can be used perfectly for working during the flight as well as for relaxing by converting the seat into a comfortable bed.

With the rise of virtual meetings and remote work, how do you see the role of business travel evolving in the future, and how is your airline adapting to these changes ?

It is correct that there are reduced business flights due to Skype, Zoom and other digital platforms, and that they will probably never fully return to pre-crisis levels. However, business flights are still important and personal contacts continue to have a high value. Travelling and personal meetings connect people directly and foster the understanding between different cultures.

Moreover, business flights have been partly compensated by leisure travel. Leisure travellers seem to be more willing to invest in privacy, comfort and distance, so not reducing the size of our Business Class has been the right decision.

Finally, as the CEO of a prominent airline, what is your vision for the future of your company, and how do you plan to adapt and thrive in an ever-changing and competitive industry ?

As a premium airline, we also want to live up to our responsibility to the environment. SWISS has set itself ambitious CO2 targets and aims to halve its CO2 emissions by 2030 compared with 2019. To achieve this, we continuously renew our fleet, work with our system partners to make air traffic more efficient, promote the market launch of new technologies and more sustainable fuels, and support the implementation of climate protection projects.

On the product side, SWISS is looking forward to offering its passengers a completely new, more personalized travel experience under the name “SWISS Senses” from 2025. A key element of this new experience is a completely revamped cabin interior on the long-haul fleet. This is the most comprehensive cabin refurbishment in SWISS’s history, and we will continue to meet our high standards with this extremely high-quality product. As a premium airline, we want to accommodate our passengers’ desire for more individuality.

“Spain, and Andalusia in particular, is a popular leisure region, and there are also many people from Spain living in Switzerland who want to visit their friends and relatives.

Business travelers have interesting direct connections to the Swiss financial center, and customers can also reach many attractive destinations in Europe and overseas from Màlaga with short connecting times in Zurich.”

Natalia Martín, Building Engineer

Born in Malaga, she spent her formative years in Marbella, surrounded by a large family that instilled in her values such as effort, perseverance, and commitment. These values were further strengthened through her involvement in sports during her youth. After graduating from the Technical Architecture University of Granada, she pursued her degree in Building Engineering at Antonio de Nebrija University in Madrid. She joined the Technical Department at La Zagaleta in January 2000. Since then, she has played a vital role in the growth and development of the community. Currently studying Master Project Management.

If the walls could talk”, is the say. Each house project is a dream, a story, an illusion, or rather the sum of many illusions since many people get involved during the construction process such as developers, architects, technical architects, engineers, surveyors, geologists, structural engineers, installers, carpenters, glassmakers, bricklayers, plasterers, painters, interior designers, landscapers, photographers, renderers and ,of course, the administration and public institutions. Our mission is to ensure that each one is heard on time in this song.

However, it is a long way with many milestones before the door of the client’s home can be opened, and the wonderful views from the living room can be seen. It all starts long before laying the first stone. After the urban development, the plots are defined, and we must select the one that meets the required conditions such as square meters, buildability, orientation, location, to get the maximum result.

From here, we must dress it up “for the party”, make it comfortable, with elegant shoes that don’t hurt and fit our budget, and make sure no accessories are missing. The final product should be unique and should reflect the clients’ dreams.

Throughout the process, we walk the path together, and everyone at the team contributes their best at every moment. While we all come to have fun and improve our quality of life through our work, we don’t forget that what matters and, above all, the result of the final product. We like to think that the houses we build at La Zagaleta are HOMES WITH A SOUL. We listen and observe in silence, knowing that sometimes walls can speak too.

Look to the future, learning from the past, always enjoying the present.

Elisa Gómez-Cambronero, Customer Service Department

Born in Madrid and raised between Madrid and Málaga, she holds a diploma in international commerce. After completing her studies, she decided to move to London, but her longing for home eventually led her to return. Upon her return, she was presented with an opportunity to interview for a job with the Zagaleta Group. She quickly became enthusiastic about the project and despite living in Malaga, she did not hesitate to join the Zagaleta service staff immediately. Her initial tasks included supporting the customer service team, and over the course of three years, she has expanded her responsibilities and developed her skills.

At La Zagaleta Service, our top priority is always the welfare of our clients and providing them with the best attention possible. Keeping that in mind, I would like to highlight certain phrases that I consider crucial in my work:

“We are happy to help you!” We are always ready to assist and help you choose the best options. Being helpful is essential to us.

“We do it on your behalf!” We treat your problems as our own, negotiating and searching for solutions on your behalf.

“ASAP!” At our office, procrastination is not an option. We strive to give our best at all times, and we believe that both effectiveness and efficiency are key.

“Know-how!” La Zagaleta Service offers its clients all our potential, know-how, and experience to promote and improve the quality of life in La Zagaleta.

“We hope this information helps!” We believe that continuous communication with our clients is essential, and we strive to keep them informed. Good feedback is always positive, and we enjoy getting to know our clients to provide them with a personalized service. Lastly, I must mention the spectacular environment where we work and how important it is for us. The good atmosphere, both inside and outside the office, makes everything we do much more enjoyable and satisfying.

“We don`t wait for “MAÑANA”!!!

Annika Lomander, Corporate Management Assistant

Born in Gothenburg, Sweden, and raised between Madrid, Barcelona, and Stockholm. Native in Spanish, Swedish and English. My professional experience as a personal assistant for top management in different sectors such as Foreign Affairs, private healthcare, Real Estate, and music industry & entertainment, has provided me with vast know-how and a wide professional network.

In 2010 I was hired at La Zagaleta as the Personal Assistant for the Senior Management.

So many things have changed in the past 30 years, including the tasks of a personal assistant. Even the job title is different. Before, you were referred to as a secretary, and your work was to screen calls, take notes, transcribe correspondence, translate or paper filing. The research was done with encyclopaedias, the translations with thick dictionaries and we used telephone directories to find the details of a person or a company.

When I began my first job, as Secretary to an Ambassador, the only tools I had was a switchboard, an electronic typewriter, a telex, and a fax machine.

Years later, I was working for the Chairman of one of the 5 majors of the music industry when the internet arrived, changing the work procedures forever: The computers made it much easier and faster to process work and the internet made communication so much more efficient and definitively more fun.

The downside was that the filter between the Directors and the outside world almost disappeared since they became more accessible through personal mobiles and email, thus increasing their workload and leaving them less time to deal with business. However, this gave valuable time for their secretaries to do more skilled work and in many cases, they became their Assistants (PA).

As in most jobs, it is very important to keep up-to-date and know about everything that is going on in and outside the company and in the world. For this profession, you need to be disciplined, be loyal and very discreet. It is also important to keep up with the latest trends as technology is changing constantly. If you deliver and manage to be ahead of yourself (and more importantly, ahead of your boss) this profession will always be in demand.

My keywords are discipline, loyalty, and discretion.

GOLF

MARTA FIGUERAS DOTTI

With an impressive career behind her, currently President of the Ladies European Tour Council, and recently awarded the 2023 Christer Lindberg Bowl for her contribution to European Golf and leadership of women’s golf in Spain, it is an honor to interview this legend: Marta Figueras-Dotti.

She started playing golf at the age of 7 with her father. Her coach, Jose Gallardo, took her under his wing at the age of 12 and never left her side. In 1978, while traveling to Fiji for the World Amateur Championship, she met the coach at USC at the airport, and he offered her a scholarship to study in the US. In December 1979, she left for the US, graduated in 1982, and turned pro that same year. She played on the Ladies European Tour and the US Mini Tour until 1983 when she earned her card from the Q-School to play on the LPGA tour, and she remained there until 2002.

Upon returning to Spain, she became the coach for the National Team and La Blume, and worked for the Federation for 15 years. It was a very good transition for her, as she enjoyed being able to share her knowledge and experience with the best amateurs in Spain. She also coached many Spanish pros who played on the LET and LPGA.

In 2016, she was selected to be the Captain/Coach for Team Spain in the Olympic Games in Brazil. In 2017, she was chosen by Annika Sorenstam to be her Vice Captain for the Solheim Cup. With her extensive experience with juniors, it was an incredible feeling to be chosen by Annika and be part of the team.

In 2018, she became a member of the LET Board of Directors, and in 2019, she assumed the role of Chair of the Board. Since then, she has invested most of her time focused on trying to provide opportunities for women in Europe. Bringing the Solheim Cup to Spain has been one of her most challenging yet extremely rewarding projects.

In 2015, she also co-founded the Golf Coaching Academy with two partners. The academy has been in Madrid for 9 years, coaching juniors and people of all ages, and organizing events not only in Madrid but also in Europe.

In 1997, she gave birth to her only son, Nicholas, who traveled with her on the LPGA tour until he was 4 years old. He is her biggest asset and a wonderful human being who constantly supports her in her career and stands by her side in her projects. She also coaches at her home club in Puerta de Hierro.

“The opportunities offered to women are much less than to men, and that affects everything in life”.

1. You are considered a legend of golf. What have been the biggest challenges you have faced during your career as a golfer?

I think a professional athlete faces a lot of challenges throughout her career, and specially a woman. To begin with, the opportunities offered to women are much less than to men, and that affects everything in life. For me, having to move to the US to compete at the highest level was probably one on the biggest challenges. I left home with a suitcase and my golf bag and lived as a nomad for many months. Not having a base, a “home”, leaving your family behind, your coach, your friends… that was difficult and very lonely at times. Having to adapt to traveling alone for many weeks in a row, living out of a suitcase and competing, was quite intense.

2. Can you name a golf player whom you admire particularly for their technique or perseverance?

I always had Seve Ballesteros as a leader in my mind. Seve was 6 months older than me, I played with him a few times while I was still an amateur and we stayed in touch over the years. He had a charisma like no other golfer I have ever known. He was creative on the golf course, passionate about the game and with some incredible skills.

I remember him saying to me: “Marta, there is no secret here, from sunrise to sunset… that is how much you have to practice…”

Over the years on tour I met incredible players with incredible skills. Back then we didn’t have the technology and resources that are available now, so we had to develop our own abilities and help each other when in a crisis. Some names come to my mind that were great examples like Annika Sorenstam, Lorena Ochoa, Nancy Lopez or Patty Sheehan. One thing I learned over there was always to observe. If I didn’t make the cut one week, I didn’t have the chance to leave earlier, so I stayed and followed the leaders so I could learn a lot from them. It was different back then, we didn’t have as many opportunities and life on tour was not as easy. But it was a great experience.

3. You have been the captain of the Jr. Solheim Cup in 5 editions. How would you describe your experience and what does this event mean to you?

The first Junior Solheim Cup was in 2002. I was then working for the Spanish Golf Federation and I remember getting a call from the AJGA. They told me that John Solheim wanted to organize a Junior event and they asked me to organize it. That year I had to do everything! From flight tickets, to uniforms to selecting the team… there were 7 Spanish players that year. It was a wonderful experience for them and for me.

Marta Figueras-Dotti enjoying Zagaleta New Course

“I think the Jr Solheim Cup is a great opportunity for juniors to experience professional women’s golf at its best”. They get to share the week with the best players from both continents, they compete for 2 days and then they stay to watch the Solheim Cup. I have been the Captain of Team Europe on 2 occasions and the vice-captain a few others. The event has a very special place in my heart. It has been nice to see how many of the players that were on the Junior Team have gone to the Pro Teams over the years. I believe every junior dreams of playing the Junior Solheim Cup.

4. What advice would you give to young female golfers who aspire to follow your footsteps in professional golf?

I could really spend hours talking about advice for young golfers. But the first I thing I would say is that you have to have a strong intrinsic motivation to succeed in this world. If you are not passionate about this game, if you are not in love with golf, you will most probably not make it to the top. This is a tough sport. You can win a tournament, or 2 and then play like a real beginner and feel like you have to start all over again.

Determination, hard work, and patience are also key factors. And I would encourage all juniors that want to make it to the top to have a good team behind them. Nobody can do this alone. You need to invest in a good team, coach, physical trainer, sports psychologist, agent… whatever is needed to be the best you can be. Surround yourself with people that believe in you, that are knowledgeable and that are going to bring the best out of you.

5. What actions do you think could incentivize women’s golf?

It is known that bringing women to the game of golf is going to attract many more golfers. For once, most of the women bring their children with them, and it is a good pathway to encourage juniors to pick up the game of golf. With this said, it is important to be able to make golf attractive for women. In my experience as a coach for many years, coaching men is very different than coaching women. I think a lot of the effort should be made made at club level, so it is important for club professionals to have experience in coaching women of all ages. They need different things, they are more “feel” players than technical players, they need the “social aspect” of the game, the fashion aspect that comes with golf. It is essential to create events that will not take too long. In other countries like Scotland, they organize tournaments playing only 6, 9 or 12 holes. That allows women to participate without having to spend a whole day on the golf course.

It is a great family sport, women bring the children and the family to play with them. So focusing on bringing women to the game of golf will certainly increase the amount of golfers that play the game.

COURSE MANAGEMENT

Maintaining a golf course requires a delicate balance of science, art, and hard work. It entails preserving the natural beauty and environmental integrity of the course while ensuring a consistent playing surface that challenges golfers of all skill levels. Vital aspects of course maintenance include proper irrigation, mowing, fertilization, and pest management, which demand an expert team with specialized knowledge and skills.

At La Zagaleta Country Club, Nacho Castro assumes the role of Head Greenkeeper, overseeing every aspect of the courses to create a playing surface that offers both challenge and enjoyment to golfers. As important tournaments like the PING Junior Solheim Cup approach, Nacho Castro shares the key strategies for maintaining the Old and New Courses at La Zagaleta.

Under Nacho’s guidance, maintaining the course’s impeccable condition becomes paramount. Rigorous attention to detail ensures that the fairways are meticulously mowed to optimal heights, the greens are expertly irrigated for consistent firmness and speed, and fertilization practices promote lush and healthy turf. Additionally, strategic pest management techniques are implemented to protect the course from potential threats while minimizing environmental impact.

134 ZAGALETA LIFE golf
“Our courses are always in optimal condition and able to host any international tournament”.

THE STANDARD OF EXELLENCE

Club de Campo La Zagaleta boasts two world-class golf courses: the Old Course and the New Course. The Old Course features T1 variety greens, while the rest of the course is covered in Bermuda 419. Similarly, the New Course features A4 variety greens, while the rest of the course is also Bermuda 419 which is highly drought resistant. Both courses offer a range of high-quality varieties suitable for high-level play.

Annual maintenance is demanding to offer our members a perfect course throughout the year. This requires renovating the soil and plants twice a year: in spring and autumn. This maintenance involves removing old soil and plants, followed by adding silica sand to the holes and soil enhancers to aid root development, Nacho explains. Daily maintenance of the courses involves mowing routines, nutritional agronomic management of plants, irrigation management, bunker maintenance, and attention to small details that set us apart from other courses. At La Zagaleta Country Club, they understand the importance of conserving water while keeping their courses in top condition. That’s why they’ve implemented various measures to optimize their water usage. One of the ways they conserve water is by using purified water for irrigation. This helps to ensure that the water they use is of the highest quality, which in turn promotes healthy

growth of the grass and other plants on the course.

In addition to using recycling water, they also have an advanced irrigation program in place that helps them to optimize their water use. With this program, they can monitor the water levels on the course and adjust their irrigation practices, water at the right time. To further reduce their water consumption, they’ve implemented a plan to reduce the irrigation area. By doing so, they can minimize the amount of water needed to maintain their courses without compromising their quality.

We also asked Nacho about hosting a tournament like PING Solheim Cup this year. He says that requires meticulous planning and attention to detail. At La Zagaleta Country Club, the team takes great pride in their course and are always looking for ways to improve it.

Leading up to the event, they had several meetings with the Solheim’s team of agronomists, who had only one recommendation for Zagaleta Old Course: keep up the level of maintenance. This was a great compliment to them, but also a challenge due to the water quality problem they faced.

They reserved the tees and flag positions, and they made sure they were on top of all the details. This attention to detail is what sets them apart and makes them capable of hosting an event of this caliber.

On March 15th, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia presented the accreditations to the tenth promotion of Honorary Ambassadors of the Spanish Brand at the Royal Palace of El Pardo. This initiative, promoted by the Spanish Leading Brands Forum (FMRE), aims to publicly recognize individuals, companies or institutions that have contributed the most to strengthening a positive image of Spain abroad through their exemplary professional careers. With this tenth promotion, Spain now has 70 active Honorary Ambassadors in 7 different categories. The accreditation is honorary in nature and requires the prior acceptance of the “Honorary Ambassador of the Spanish Brand”, as well as their willingness to collabora-

te in FMRE initiatives that strengthen the international image of our country. La Zagaleta, as a member of FMRE, was represented by its Executive President, Ignacio Pérez Díaz, and its Communication Director, Sergio Azcona, who held a brief meeting with His Majesty the King after the ceremony.

INNOVATIVE FIRE DETECTION PROJECT PRESENTED AT LA ZAGALETA

In a groundbreaking event led by the Security Department of La Zagaleta, a demonstration of a cutting-edge dual camera system capable of detecting fires several kilometers away was held at our Helipad. The Zagaleta First Intervention Team simulated two fire scenarios, allowing attendees to witness the capabilities of this unique camera, the only one of its kind currently manufactured worldwide. The initiative, supported by the Benahavís City Council and its Mayor, Mr. José Antonio Mena, brought together technicians and executives from all relevant emergency response entities in our municipality, including GREA, INFOCA, UME, Marbella Firefighters, Benahavís Local Police, Civil Guard, Andalusian Regional Government, and the Urban Planning, Environment, and Security Departments of the Benahavís City Council. Estepona Civil Protection was also present, showing great interest in fire-related matters in the vicinity of our municipal area.

Following the practical demonstration, the ambitious “pilot” project was presented at the recently completed “GREA Coastal Base.” The project generated significant anticipation as it marked the first collaborative effort to address the fire risk in Sierra Bermeja, safeguarding the unique flora and fauna of this special environment, which includes prestigious and representative developments such as La Zagaleta on the Costa del Sol. Special thanks were extended to the Benahavís City Council and GREA for their support and coordination efforts, marking the beginning of the Working Group responsible for implementing this innovative and singular Project.

Unit (UME) Conducts “Real Scenario Simulation” Maneuvers

Taking advantage of the project’s theme, the Security Department of La Zagaleta organized a “real scenario fire simulation,” conducting practical and operational maneuvers alongside the 2nd Battalion for Emergency Response of the UME (BIEM II), based in Morón de La Frontera, Seville. Throughout the evening, two possibilities were simulated: “defense in an urban interface” (protecting a house from encroaching flames) and “defense of the Zagaleta perimeter” (clearing and cooling the contact zone of an approaching fire near the development’s perimeter). The exercises, during which insights and operational procedures were exchanged, were supervised by UME commanders, including the presence of the Battalion’s Lieutenant Colonel and the Chief of the USAC MONTEJAQUE from Ronda, along with the Chief of the Provincial Fire Consortium of Malaga, who landed at our Helipad to evaluate the joint experience. Many thanks to the BIEM II of the UME for this unique and enriching opportunity, never before carried out with Private Security Guards.

Françoise Bettencourt Meyers

L’ORÉAL HEIRESS

160 ZAGALETA LIFE celebrities

Françoise Bettencourt Meyers, the granddaughter of L’Oréal’s founder, is the world’s wealthiest woman. Bettencourt Meyers and her family hold around 33% of L’Oréal stock.

She has been on the board of L’Oréal since 1997 and is the chairwoman of the family’s holding business.

She became France’s reigning L’Oréal heiress in 2017 when her mother Liliane Bettencourt, the world’s wealthiest woman at the time, died at the age of 94.

Bettencourt Meyers is also the president of her family’s philanthropic foundation, which promotes French advancement in science and the arts.

L’Oréal and the Bettencourt Meyers family committed to giving $226 million to reconstruct Notre Dame Cathedral following the April 2019 fire.

Françoise Bettencourt Meyers is the world’s wealthiest woman, with an estimated net worth of $80.5 billion, up $5.7 billion from the previous year. She is the eleventh wealthiest person on the globe this year, up from the fourteenth last year. According to Forbes, Bettencourt Meyers is one of just 337 women on Forbes World’s 2023 list of billionaires, representing only 13% of the world’s 2,640 billionaires.

The majority of Bettencourt Meyers’s fortune stems from her ownership in the L’Oréal business. Together with the family, she owns around 33% of the hair and beauty conglomerate.

Bettencourt Meyers first appeared on Forbes’ list of billionaires in 2018, after her mother Liliane Bettencourt, the world’s richest woman at the moment, passed away in 2017. With a net worth of $42.2 billion, she became the richest newcomer, the wealthiest woman and one of the world’s 20 richest individuals.

Bettencourt Meyers is the only child of Liliane Bettencourt and French politician André Bettencourt. She is also the granddaughter of L’Oréal founder Eugène Schueller, who developed a hair colouring solution named Oréal in 1907, marketed it to Parisian hairdressers, and ultimately founded the company.

The way to the top was not always easy for the heiress. Her undoubtedly privileged upbringing was also very sheltered as a result of her overprotective mother, who lived in continuous terror of her abduction. A complex mother-daughter relationship had ups and downs due to personality differences. Liliane, a charming socialite, was into high fashion and social life, while Françoise was more introverted and leaned towards intellectual activities. The relationship peaked with the so-called Bettencourt trial, which began in 2008 and concluded three years later with a decision in favour of Françoise, who requested permission to handle her mother’s inheritance owing to her “faltering mental health.” François-Marie Banier, a prominent photographer, was sentenced

to three years in jail for taking advantage of Liliane’s mental instability and collecting more than one billion euros in gifts and contributions over the years.

Bettencourt Meyers studied Judeo-Christian international relations and devoted a lot of time to understanding religion. She is married to Jean-Pierre Meyers, grandson of a renowned rabbi executed by Hitler’s regime, and chose to convert to Judaism. She raised her two sons, Jean-Victor, 35, and Nicolas, 33, as Jewish. Both are L’Oréal board members.

An avid literature and art lover, Bettencourt Meyers is a published author. In a five-volume treatise “A Look at the Bible” she examines the significance of the link between Christianity and Judaism. All profits from the proceedings of this book go to Doctors Without Borders. She also wrote a book on mythology, “The Greek Gods”. She is an active and generous philanthropist. Bettencourt Meyers and L’Oréal contributed $230 million to the renovation of Notre Dame Cathedral in 2019. She is the head of the Bettencourt Schueller family foundation. Liliane Bettencourt, André Bettencourt and Françoise Bettencourt Meyers established the Bettencourt Schueller Foundation (Fondation Bettencourt Schueller) in 1987 to enhance French society and expand France’s international influence through three key engagement areas: life sciences, the arts, and inclusive society. The Foundation bestows five awards: three in science and two in culture. The awards offer the winners a professional springboard and a chance to persevere on the road to innovation. In 2022, the Bettencourt Schueller Foundation granted 64.5M€ in total grants: 27.4M€ for life sciences, 23.5M€ for arts and 10.4M€ for solidarity.

Bettencourt Meyers has been a member of the L’Oréal board of directors since 1997 and continues to grow the family fortune. She is chairman of the family’s holding company, Téthys Invest, through which she has supported numerous projects, including the French private hospital operator Elsan.

From Kiehl’s and Lancôme to Maybelline and La Roche-Posay, L’Oréal manufactures some of the most popular skincare and cosmetics brands. Recently, the business introduced a marketing campaign to attract consumers from Generation Z. Emma Chamberlain assumed the role of Lancôme ambassador in January 2023, following a November 2022 multi-brand partnership with Ready Player Me, an avatar platform for the metaverse. Bettencourt Meyers strives to lead a low-key life. She is holding on to one of the greatest luxuries available to a member of one of the world’s most illustrious families: anonymity.

Chanel Pique-Aiguilles

As part of the Mademoiselle Privé collection, Chanel introduced the Pique-Aiguilles limited-edition watch series during the 2023 edition of Watches and Wonders. Gabrielle Chanel always carried two tools in her ateliers on rue Cambon: a pair of scissors suspended from a ribbon that she wore around her neck as a sautoir and a pincushion, the indispensable instrument of any seamstress. The invaluable accessory for dressmaking typically takes a form of a metal cuff crowned with a substantially sized dome-shaped cushion and enables tailors to store and organise their pins and needles in an easily accessible location. Arnaud Chastaingt, Director of Chanel’s Watchmaking Creation Studio, drew inspiration from this unassuming instrument to create the Mademoiselle Privé Pique-Aiguilles watch. Chanel watches typically take design cues from the French Maison, such as winding the brand’s signature embroidered leather purse chain around the wrist or imprinting tweed on the dial. Chastaingt adds, “I like the image of this functional piece of jewellery that adorns the wrists of seamstresses.”

The collection comprises five 55mm-diameter, oversized timepieces that convey a tale of Chanel Couture and Haute Horlogerie. The dial of the Mademoiselle Privé Pique-Aiguilles Pearls Motif watch, pictured in this article, is completed in a black tweed effect and adorned with meticulously placed gemstones to form long necklaces, braided chains and Byzantine brooches. All are sculpted in yellow gold, then delicately arranged on a plate with a relief pattern of black tweed and an array of diamonds and gold pearls. The Mademoiselle Privé Pique-Aiguilles Lace Motif watch features a lace motif of camellias that was created using three distinct Métiers d’art techniques: hand engraving of the yellow gold dial surface, enamel technique, and decals to sketch the motif. There are five diamonds and countless minuscule gold pearls covering the entire surface.

The Tweed Motif pattern depicts a tweed jacket embellished with 92 diamonds. The dial is adorned with a chain, similar to the one stitched into each Chanel jacket, to ensure that it drapes precisely. The black fabric of the Mademoiselle Privé Pique-Aiguilles

Embroidery Motif is embellished with sequins. Conceived by the Watchmaking Creation Studio as a convex disc of black-coated white gold, snow-set with 650 brilliant-cut diamonds and embellished with a delicate array of small gold beads, it exudes timeless elegance

The Quilted Motif watch features five iconic bags that are engraved and modelled in black mother-of-pearl to simulate quilted leather. Their engraved yellow gold chains are embellished with diamond pendants, and each fastening features a baguette-cut diamond. Each model is water-resistant to a depth of 30 metres and is limited to 20 pieces.

YAMAHA CFX CONCERT GRAND PIANO

After presenting its first grand piano 120 years ago, last year Yamaha made history again with the introduction of the much-lauded next-generation CFX concert grand. The original Yamaha CFX grand piano was introduced in 2010 as the company’s premier model, designed for the most prestigious stages in the world. It was quite a challenge for Yamaha to improve this handcrafted instrument, but technological advancements have enabled the company to improve the piano’s sound quality and responsiveness. Terry Murphy, Yamaha Music Europe’s Piano Strategy Director, states, “The new CFX represents an extraordinary milestone in the history of the grand piano.”

The CFX is a full-sized concert grand suitable for the greatest concert halls. Soundboard and iron frame, bridge, hammers, and music desk, nearly every component, material, and production technique have been meticulously re-examined and refined. The rim undergoes Yamaha’s exclusive Acoustic Resonance Enhancement (A.R.E) process, which matures the wood over an accelerated period to achieve the tone and resonance of an instrument that has been ‘played in’ for decades. Conventional barriers between performer and piano have been eliminated by positioning the artist and their music at the centre of what Yamaha calls a ‘Unibody Concept’ design philosophy. The result is an instrument that becomes an extension of the artist’s vision, inspiring the performer so that the music flows effortlessly and expresses every facet of the performance. “It’s an instrument with which the player can connect on a deeper and more profound level and an instrument that’s truly worthy of taking Yamaha’s proud tradition of concert grand piano making forward into the next decades and beyond,” says Yutaka Matsuki, General Manager of the Piano Division at Yamaha Corporation in Japan.

Architectural surge at ZAGALETA®

WHEN DESIGN TEAMS, TALENT, AND DELIVERY BECOMES CULTURE

The explotion of global demand within the world of luxury housing over the course of the past three decades has fostered a profound evolution, both in architectural and conceptual terms. The pursuit of an elevated way of life stands as the force behind the notion of possessing a secondary residence in a foreign land, ideally situated within a delightful and sun-soaked holiday destination.

In this context, it is difficult to avoid acknowledging the essence of the word ¨enjoyment¨ or simply said “fun”. People unequivocally dream of a better lifestyle, meaning awakening in a different country, state or landscape. The likes of Florida or the Southern States of Europe merely serve as a handful of examples. It is like trying to fulfill a deeply rooted lifetime dream—if one attains success and possesses the means, it is the first vision that graces their eyes upon awakening: a beautiful bedroom, a breathtaking garden, or a sublime vista. Therefore, why not please? Why not seize the opportunity?

The recognition that “the dream home and place exists somewhere out there,” combined with the abundance of videos accessible via social media exploring this very subject, shall undoubtedly instigate a gradual inclination to participate in the undertaking as one’s economic circumstances improve.

CGI`s: HARD TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN REALITY AND GENERATED PICTURE, BUT KEY IN THE CUSTOMER ENGAGEMENT STAGE

At the same time, an endless array of architectural designs, predominantly conveyed through the so called Computer Generated Images (CGI), have flooded and infused our minds over the past decade. The persuasive power of visualization assumes paramount importance in the decision-making process, particularly during the final stages of a purchase process. Against the backdrop of a thriving market, wherein developers emerge from almost every nook and cranny, showcasing resplendent visualizations, this facet has acquired even greater significance, particularly in the aftermath of the pandemic.

PROPERTY SELECTION: INFORMATION, PRODUCT, AND.. TRUST!

Property, just like in many other industries, is a matter of trust. Many people would argue with this statement and say that it

is simply the product that matters. The challenge is not only in the act of buying, but also in ensuring that what you have bought lives up to the promises made in the early stages, that it works, and that you are happy. The difficult part comes when, or rather if, you want to sell. Will you find a buyer, or will you be left waiting in a queue? At the end you will be faced with everything you didn’t know when you made the purchase, and every buyer will remind you of it. And then, it will be too late!

BUYING A PROPERTY: A KEY STEP IN YOUR LIFE THAT YOU ARE UNLIKELY TO EASILY REVERSE

When it comes to purchasing a property, it’s a decision that carries considerable weight and significance, as it becomes an permanent milestone in your life’s journey. Whether it’s a luxurious villa overlooking the sparkling coastline or a charming countryside retreat, the process of finding the perfect abode entails careful consideration of various factors, such as security, functionality, insulation and in general the solutions given to the architectural design and features.

One of the challenges that arises during the home-buying journey is the discrepancy between the enticing renders showcased during the initial stages and the actual finished product. It’s only when the construction is completed and you step foot inside your new sanctuary that you can truly gauge its true essence. This temporal gap between expectation and reality can be both thrilling and nerve-wracking, as you hope that all the meticulously planned features seamlessly come together to create a harmonious living space.

Imagine investing in a meticulously rendered and exquisitely designed home, eagerly awaiting the day when you can revel in its luxurious comforts, only to discover that some of its features don’t function as expected upon delivery. Such an unfortunate turn of events can swiftly turn your dream into a disappointment, undermining the very purpose of acquiring a home for holidays and enjoyment.

Ensuring that your chosen property meets your expectations in terms of security, functionality, insulation, and for example the

182 ZAGALETA LIFE design

presence of captivating water elements is crucial. Luxury brands in the real estate market face their own set of challenges in this regard. Not every architectural aspiration can be easily realized, and untested building solutions and innovations can present unforeseeable hurdles.

However, navigating these challenges and finding the perfect property that encapsulates your desires is a journey worth embarking upon. The desire of a breathtaking view, the soothing sounds of a cascading waterfall, or the joy of hosting loved ones in a thoughtfully designed space are the rewards that await those who invest time and consideration in selecting their ideal home.

Ultimately, buying a property is an investment not only in brick and mortar but also in the intangible aspects that shape our lives. It’s a commitment to creating a sanctuary where cherished memories will be made and treasured for years to come. So, take the time to explore, envision, and choose wisely, as buying a property is a significant step that you are unlikely to easily reverse.

The ever-growing demand for exquisite properties has set the stage for an unprecedented construction boom in recent years. Within the realm of real estate, the repercussions of the pandemic have caused material shortages and subsequent inflationary pressures, exacerbated by the ripple effects of the Ukraine conflict. As a result, the cost of building a home today has surged by at least 30% compared to a mere four years ago. Against this backdrop, regions like the Costa del Sol in Spain and esteemed municipalities such as Marbella and Benahavis have become epicenters of luxurious living, attracting a myriad of new players in the luxury housing market, some of whom boast substantial financial resources and capital, capable to develop extraordinary complexes and residences.

186 ZAGALETA LIFE design

CONCEPTUALIZATION PHASE: IMPORTANCE TO TAKE THE TIME.

In the creation of the high-end residential product, it’s essential to elaborate the concept throughout. Just like in private banking it is fundamental to understand your client before investing in anything, in real estate it is about the same. Here the focus needs to be basic: What kind of property do I want to build, for whom and why? Is the objective to build a house in order to sell it and that is it, or is it to build a house to pass it for future generations or, just in case, should it be a sellable house at any time in the future in case the next generations do not want to keep it?

When one thinks that to build a luxury home this is equivalent, in terms of capital required, to the creation of a medium size company with an amount ranging between 5 and 10 million Euros, the answer is that it is worthwhile to be well advised and moreover to dedicate it sufficient time as this building shall or should be here for centuries to come.

GOOD THINGS TAKE TIME

It is not a say, but it could almost be one and a general rule. Good and well-done things require time. This is also the case for the concept and the design. It is like that, and time confirms it.

Nowadays the lack of time and daily run makes that on many occasions we do not stop to think about the relevance that the decisions that we take will have in time. With respect to the good ideas, one should write them down as they come to mind in order to rescue them at a later moment to develop them further and be able to improve them, something particularly relevant in the construction of a house. Good ideas surge in moments of inspirations and not “rushing” between two meetings. I am sure this has happened more than once to you: You are being asked for a name for a new project while you are immerged in the middle of a task... There is no inspiration, and if there is no time nor focus, the result usually isn’t good.

187 design ZAGALETA LIFE
188 ZAGALETA LIFE design

Although it is true that the architecture has evolved enormously in the past three decades and that the current one has nothing to do with the one back then, it is sad to see how many homes are being demolished nowadays, as no long-term mind nor vision had been considered back in the early days. Thinking about it loud, it is a nonsense to demolish and to destroy value when home and building could last centuries.

OLD PROPERTIES ON PRIME PLOTS. A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR A SUPER PREMIUM ARCHITECTURAL MARKET.

This phenomenon of the conceptualization is particularly present on plots with prime views and locations.

Only some 30 years ago, almost everything on a good location sold and therefore developers could “relax” as clients were looking

189 design ZAGALETA LIFE
190 ZAGALETA LIFE design

for good locations and the views seduced them, being pleased with an architecture that covered its needs. With the spectacular evolution in the way consumers conceive and understand the homes and spaces 30 years later, a great deal of homes has no other choice than the demolishment as there is simply no viable solution to adapt nor to modernize them. Nevertheless, those homes that back then were conceived well are not being teared down nowadays. This point affects directly the value of a property when it comes to sell it in todays market as the only alternative remains the demolition.

DESIGN AND USAGE: GREAT PARALELISM WITH THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY.

Conceptually both face the same challenges, moreover in a highly saturated market. One thing is design and the other is usage, two linked parameters. A nice design attracts and helps captivating the view at a first sight but then comes the practical and more pragmatic side and if its use doesn’t “score” in the

191 design ZAGALETA LIFE
192 ZAGALETA LIFE design

table, there will be no sale. A new car should have, as a minimum, all the evolving successes of the previous ones, plus all the new features, performances and innovations, on top of a beautiful design. In this respect, everything, or almost has been invented.

When a house gets conceived one must think of how it shall be positioned as a product in the future market where it shall compete. Here the same law applies, the more features it “scores” the higher the likelihood to sell it in the future. The buyers, often families are focused on exactly what their needs are and if those features are not present the property it will be ruled out. Often though the expectation on what the property should have been is set by the previously visited homes. A good example in the luxury segment is the high of the ceiling or the double high ceiling in the living room area. Once the buyer has put the focus on this point and wants it, he will rule out any new property that doesn’t have it or will only buy it if at all, against a strong discount. It is better not to be in such a position!

Trends

READY FOR RED

Indulge in the allure of a femme fatale with a captivating red dress, wrap yourself in a luxurious velvet design or wear a punk-inspired red shirtdress with a daring wide slit. While red may not defy the cold, it undeniably commands everyone’s attention. Alexander McQueen, Alberta Ferretti, Valentino, Mugler, and Proenza Schouler know that too

HOURGLASS EFFECT

Waist elements should not be overlooked. Choose belts to balance out broad shoulders: either chunky ones like Max Mara or skinny ones like Louis Vuitton and Chanel. Don’t like the cinched feeling? Peplum will save you. Brandon Maxwell and Balmain both considered it.

TARTAN REVIVAL

The perpetually popular tartan design has transcended its classic punk and grunge vibe and embraced a daringly vibrant colour scheme in the complete ensemble presented by Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood. Burberry explored a fresh take on tartan, incorporating eye-catching pink and purple as well as yellow and electric blue.

WINTER FLOWERS

Floral prints have gracefully bloomed their way into the autumn/winter collections. Transmitting a sense of calm optimism and serenity, they have emerged in subdued hues at Chanel, in a slightly gothic mood at Burberry and paired with black lace in Paco Rabbane’s collections.

BASIC CHARM

The enduring presence of basics and uniform dressing is evident when Gucci’s models confidently strut down the runway in timeless button-down shirts, oversized blazers and wide-leg jeans. The Row, Bottega Veneta, Dior and Prada also showcased the same style, further solidifying its prominence.

POWER SHOULDERS

Bigger than ever and embracing exaggerated proportions, the 1980s shoulder is back. Whether it’s through padded shoulders, voluminous sleeves, or architectural draping, big shoulders add an instant dose of confidence and drama to any outfit. Seen at Saint Laurent, Courrèges and Balenciaga.

LEGS FOR DAYS

Visualise ultra-short shorts. Now, envision them becoming even shorter. Accentuating your legs to the fullest extent, leaving no inch hidden, the little shorts emerged prominently at esteemed fashion houses like Miu Miu, Theory, Christian Siriano, Prabal Gurung, Sergio Hudson, and LaQuan Smith.

DARK ROMANCE LACE

Explore your romantic side with ethereal aesthetics. Lace has returned, but this time in the deepest hue: black. Eveningwear at Gucci, Off-White and Balenciaga revel in the elegance of sheer embellishments and immaculate lace workmanship.

FEATHERED AFFAIR

Feathers complement both daytime and evening looks and add a stylish flair to any ensemble. Used to enhance a silhouette or serve as a statement piece, they effortlessly elevate an outfit. Take cues from Valentino’s black and white feather coats or Bottega Veneta’s aqua coat adorned with ostrich feathers.

SPARKLING METALS

Shimmer, glimmer and all things metallic make it a convenient choice for a party. The sequined metallic dresses and fuzzy metallic coats from the likes of Paco Rabanne and Gucci, among others, will add a touch of glamour to any social gathering.

Since Lift Foils began developing eFoils seven years ago, the company has consistently pushed the limits of battery technology. Engineered in-house by the company, the new Gen4 batteries provide the best possible experience on and off the water and feature a new and cutting-edge battery management system (BMS) that optimises the performance and efficiency of each ride, thereby extending the battery’s overall lifespan. With the Gen4 battery system, charge times have been reduced to less than 30 minutes for the Light Battery and 50 minutes for the Full Range model. Lift Foils’ market-leading position has enabled the firm to get access to battery cells used in the best electric cars, which have the maximum energy capacity per cell.

The Lift Full Range Battery provides up to 2.5 hours of ride time, while the Lift Light Battery provides up to 1.5 hours of riding time. The Gen4 batteries have a fully redesigned enclosure to offer a durable, lab-tested, and field-proven solution. Lift Foils has prioritised safety and dependability while enhancing lifetime and decreasing weight. For ultimate comfort and safety, the housing sports a redesigned ergonomic handle and rubber feet. The LCS Fixed and Folding Propeller Kits, which include a unique click-and-lock system for quick interchange of your eFoil propeller, shroud, or folding propeller without the need for tools, enable you to get the most out of your LIFT4 experience. The propellers of the LIFT4 are precisely machined from a single piece of aluminium. Before being completed with strong anodization, each propeller is manually polished and balanced to perfection. The protective shroud has been redesigned to not only provide the rider with protection and peace of mind but also to enhance hydrodynamics and provide stability to the overall ride.

The LIFT4 comes with everything one needs to experience the magical feeling of eFoiling. There is also a standard 2-year warranty on all components.

Lift Foils is the inventor of the first electric hydrofoil, or eFoil, and the undisputed leader in the eFoiling industry. The Lift e-foil, which was founded in 2013 in Puerto Rico by engineer and ardent surfer Nick Leason, enables riders of all abilities to fly over practically any body of water at up to 30mph with no waves or towing necessary.

The LIFT4 features an updated shape for increased aerodynamics, extra-durable construction, long ride time and the highest speed on the market.

When it comes to design and usability, Lift Foils always pays close attention to the smallest of details and has updated some small but crucial components, such as latches. The LIFT4 features updated carbon fibre latches that were designed and manufactured in Puerto Rico. These updated latches have a new ergonomic design and significantly reduce the weight of an eFoil assembly. In addition, they provide precise tensioning and automatically modulate pressure within the hatch compartment, making it simpler to open and close the hatch in any condition. The LIFT4, constructed of carbon fibre, maintained the original board shapes and sizes.

Additionally, enhancements and refinements have been made to the new LIFT4 eBox for a nearly silent and effortless experience on the water. The innovative Quiet Ride Technology System of Lift Foils consists of a sophisticated motor controller that is their smoothest and quietest controller to date, halving any previous eFoil vibrations or noises. This new system employs the most advanced technology in the electric mobility industry and substantially improves the riding experience by halving any extant vibrations or noises. Thus, riders are not listening to their equipment, but rather to the natural surroundings.

For the LIFT4, Lift Foils introduces new wings to provide riders with the ultimate flying experience. The new Camber Pro Series is the smoothest eFoilspecific wing series to date. The eFoil wings control your ride. The company fine-tuned the shapes and curves that define wing performance giving the rider an even more balanced sensation. The new Camber Pro Series is available in three sizes: small for lighter riders who want a sporty feel, medium for an overall amazing feel and large for a gentle surfy ride at reduced speeds. Two back wings, 36 and 46 Glides, have been added to provide the ideal equilibrium between stability and carving performance.

For maximum efficacy and reduced weight, the LIFT4 mast is made entirely of carbon fibre and is available in two sizes: 28 inches and 32 inches. LIFT4 is equipped with a precision-machined aluminium propeller, milled from a block of aerospacegrade aluminium, handpolished, hard-anodized, and calibrated to perfection. The propellers are ultra-rigid for a maximal bite and torque and are designed to withstand any maltreatment they may endure in the water. All components of the propulsion unit are modular and readily interchangeable based on the rider’s preference, thanks to the Lift Connect System (LCS)

SWAN 128

After the recent launches of the ClubSwan 125 and the Swan 120, Nautor unveils the new 128-foot model. The Swan 128 places second in the Swan large yacht range, completing the line that includes the 88, the 98, the 108 and the 120. Also known as project N. 1400 by Frers studio, Swan 128 consolidates the Argentinean designer’s forty-year collaboration with the Finnish shipyard, which has been particularly active over the last ten years with the production of 13 new yachts, seven of which are over 80 feet (the limit that separates Swan Yachts from Maxi Swan Yachts). Lucio Micheletti + Partners designed the deck and coachroof, and architect Misa Poggi was responsible for the interiors.

The Swan 128 perfectly embodies the Swan concept of the sporty cruiser, a yacht designed for long ocean voyages but also perfectly at ease in major international competitions without needing to change any of its characteristics. As with all the latest Swans, the hull is designed for maximum performance at different speeds, remaining perfectly symmetrical at different angles of the heel. In keeping with the shape, the adoption of the double rudder blade guarantees optimal control even at high speeds, optimising the helming experience as much as possible and offering remarkable sensitivity to the wheels despite the boat’s considerable size. The contained heel—around 20 degrees in optimal conditions—also results in remarkable comfort under sail, allowing all areas of the boat to be used without acrobatics.

The generous sail plan, as in all Frers designs, provides the necessary power for a fun and thrilling ride even in light winds while remaining docile and manageable in more challenging conditions. The VPP poles are remarkable, with peaks well above 17 knots.

The deck plan features a streamlined and sculpted deckhouse, albeit in a semi-raised saloon configuration, that gives the boat an especially sporty feel. The bow has been designed to have a good separation between the headstay and the code zero. Micheletti focused on volumes, shapes, and details to provide as much lightness as possible without compromising the functionality and protection typical of Swan deckhouses. The cockpit offers the typical three-area division that characterises all Swans. The front area, close to the deckhouse and protected by a sprayhood and a bimini top (a retractable model with a rigid structure is optional), is dedicated to guests.

The collaboration between Frers studio, the shipyard’s interiors department and architect Misa Poggi has led to an optimal and flexible layout, with a large owner’s quarters in the foreship area and a generous aft crew area. The elevated saloon, accessible via an extra-large companionway, offers three levels of natural light with panoramic views both when standing and seated. The two

Architect Misa Poggi, together with the Finnish firm’s inhouse team, is at the owners’ disposal to interpret any desire in layout and style, suggesting tailored materials to make each Swan 128 unique and inimitable.

areas, well separated between the lounge and dining area in the standard version, however, offer numerous customizations, including exclusive day beds to take advantage of the large hull windows even during navigation. The TV lounge, directly connected to the raised living room, can be converted into a large dining room that can seat up to ten guests. The owner’s quarters feature a master cabin and bathroom, both full-beam. The customization possibilities are endless given the size of the rooms and the reduced structural constraints of the area, which is well defined by regularly shaped bulkheads.

Hull and deck manufacturing is based on Sprint technology with carbon pre-preg fabrics and epoxy resin in a sandwich featuring a Corecell core, all materials engineered and produced by the leading composite company Gurit. The process involves a twostage post-curing in a digitally controlled oven for about 20 hours with a characteristic curve up to 90 degrees Celsius, plus a final structural assembly post-cure.

In terms of propulsion, this maxi yacht is equipped with the most advanced SCR technology to reduce emissions in compliance with the latest IMO III regulations, plus a variable pitch propeller to optimise efficiency and noise and vibration reduction.

INFINITY 42 BLUE

Rossinavi embraced a new challenge of transferring BluE, Rossinavi’s new eco-friendly navigation technology, to a monohull. One of Rossinavi’s most appreciated projects, born from the collaboration with Fulvio de Simoni, was chosen for this venture. The result is Infinity 42 BluE, a hybrid-electric yacht that takes eco-sailing to a higher level. The Infinity 42 BluE is the certainty of constant evolution.

The yacht is manufactured wholly of aluminium and has a reduced draught, allowing for enjoyable navigation even in shallow waters. Equipped with solar panels and a large battery cell, the Infinity 42 BluE will be able to navigate 90% of the time in fullelectric mode during a daily navigation scenario and 70% of the time during an Atlantic crossing scenario, with the remainder of the time being spent with diesel generators. This has a significant impact on reducing noise, odours and emissions.

The solar panels on the Infinity 42 BluE perform exceptionally well in low-intensity sunlight and can generate energy even at minimal solar incidence angles. Aesthetically, integration with the deck is nearly complete due to the great flexibility that enables them to be seamlessly incorporated into curvilinear designs. This project’s eco-displacement hull is designed to reduce fuel consumption even further than a conventional full-displacement hull at standard cruising velocities of 10–11 knots.

Like all new Rossinavi projects, Infinity 42 BluE will feature the Rossinavi Artificial Intelligence system on board. The AI system continuously monitors the boat’s performance, can learn and anticipate the needs of guests on board and communicates with crew members in real-time, suggesting lower-impact actions and instructing them in more conscientious yachting. In addition, Rossinavi Zero Noise Technology, which substantially reduces noise and vibrations on board, will undoubtedly be present.

Regarding the interior, every location on board has been meticulously designed to provide visitors with as many comfortable areas as feasible. Above all else, the expansive sun deck stands out, which extends to the stern due to a slight height difference. This original architecture enables the creation of an open area aft of the saloon portal that is protected on all sides and offers great comfort and privacy even when the vessel is berthed, as the raised deck partially screens it from the stern.
