Hello and welcome.

In 2018 we are offering you a unique blend of authentic northern drama, stunning dance, groundbreaking new work and family thrills at the circus.

We pride ourselves on bringing the best drama to the heart of Huddersfield. We are delighted to welcome back Northern Broadsides with their new production of hard times (p6) and to bring you the world premiere of Mikron Theatre’s revolting women (p7).

In January we present the visually astonishing air play (p8) and in February we welcome National Dance Company Wales performing their triple bill terra firma (p9).

We are the only place in Yorkshire to enjoy these unique events.

In June we are heading outside our walls for the first time in over five years to welcome Circus Tsuica (p11) to Greenhead Park. This exclusive event features an international company of French acrobats with local brass band accompaniment.

We are delighted to keep exploring new ways for creativity and ambition to thrive and we look forward to welcoming you this season.

CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ROLE AT THE LBT? That’s a good question. I am kind of a man for all seasons, administratively speaking. I work behind the scenes as an office manager, senior administrator and assistant to the Director.

WHAT DOES THE LBT MEAN TO YOU? I love this place. There is nothing to compare with live theatre, and having such a wealth of entertainment practically on my doorstep is one of my favourite things about this town.

WHAT ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT THIS SEASON? Circus Tsuica’s now or never and a festival both seem like incredible, unique events. And I love a good story, so the whole of the drama offer is right up my street, especially hard times and rita, sue and bob too.

Creatives from Mikron Theatre Company join us to talk about the world premiere of revolting women; LipService discuss their comedy homage to Jane Austen, mr darcy loses the plot; m 6 Theatre Company explore the true story of the Holmfirth tiger in a tiger’s tale and Northern Broadsides will be chatting about their adaptation of Charles Dickens’ hard times.

Live entertainment comes from Woodhouse Musical Theatre Company, who will perform extracts from made in dagenham, and members of Huddersfield University Big Band will perform well-known songs from the genre.

Best friends Rita and Sue get a lift home from married Bob after babysitting his kids. When he takes the scenic route and offers them a bit of fun, the three start a fling they each think they control.

Andrea Dunbar’s semi-autobiographical play was written in 1982 when she was just 19. It’s a vivid portrait of girls caught between brutal childhood and an unpromising future, and hungry for adult adventure.

Told with wicked humour, startling insight and a great ear for dialogue, rita, sue and bob too famously became a cult film.

Jane Austen is dreaming up Darcy, a proud, lip-curling handsome creation in very tight pants. But then a door squeaks, a visitor approaches and Jane hastily hides her work.

Mr Darcy is left dangling. Left to his own devices he embroiders his own storyline while his creator stitches her quilt.

When she returns she finds Darcy is diving into a lake in a clinging white shirt, dancing the Berzerka (a more extreme version of the Masurka) and wrestling carp. ′Britain’s favourite literary lunatics′, LipService, celebrate the work of Jane Austen with their own affectionately irreverent tribute; mr darcy loses the plot.

Imagine a world where imagination is forbidden.

Coketown is such a place. Thomas Gradgrind will not permit fanciful thoughts in his school or his home. But what effect will this policy have on his own children, Tom and Louisa? How can he protect them from corrupting influences – especially when the circus comes to town?

When retired miner Don and former private school teacher Carol meet at a bereavement group, they thought they’d found a new beginning. But a bike ride through Europe would test their budding romance, and the road to love is rocky when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object.

Northern Broadsides (For Love or Money, The Merry Wives) return with Deborah McAndrew’s witty adaptation of Charles Dickens’ great Northern novel.

Why did it take so insufferably long for women to get the vote? revolting women tells the Suffrage story through the eyes of a less well known Pankhurst, Sylvia, who fought for the vote alongside working women in the East End. Sylvia meets Lettie and they push together to parliament, to bend the ear of the cabinet.

A story of absolute commitment or dangerous obsession?

Huddersfield’s own Mikron Theatre Company (Raising Agents, Till the Cows Come Home) return with the world premiere of revolting women. Full of political satire, song and more suffrage societies than you can shake a stick at, revolting women unravels a contentious and momentous movement in history.

Flying umbrellas, larger-thanlife balloons, giant kites floating over the audience, and the biggest snow globe you’ve ever seen will make you gasp in wonder and laugh until it hurts. air play is a circus-style adventure of two siblings journeying through a surreal land of air, transforming the ordinary into objects of uncommon beauty. Fabrics dance in the wind, balloons have a mind of their own, confetti turns into the night sky, and an enormous canopy of hovering silk forever alters their future.

This international spectacle is the creation of husband and wife team Seth Bloom and Christina Gelsone and merges their circus and street theatre performance art with the sculptural artistry of Daniel Wurtzel.

With visual images seemingly sewn from the sky, this poetic ode to childhood will enchant and electrify the young and young at heart.

The Green House brings the outside in; on a Wes-Anderson style tv set, the ‘stars’ are stuck in a never-ending loop. Beautifully unsettling and full of character.

Tundra is a barren landscape where ultra-modern creativity blinks into life and tears pages from Russian folk dance and revolution.

Atalaÿ is a watch tower from which far off lands can be seen from four points; a contagious dance influenced by the warmth of the Mediterranean.

A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE

A terrorist code-named Cerestes is on the loose, and the police have planned a sting to capture him as he steps off a train at a London station.

Join much loved Huddersfield writer Angie Smith as she takes you through her journey, her story and her work with Jamrock Productions.

The operation, led by the buffoonish Major Quentin, has drawn in two civilians – Ez and Barry. Perfect strangers as the play begins, their time waiting for the trap to be set gives them the chance to get to know each other, and try to make sense of the chaos unfolding around them.

For over 12 years Angie’s love and passion for the stage has brought laughter to hundreds of people with shows such as Wrong Move, Family Confusion, Thy Neighbours and many more.

Blanche DuBois seeks solace with her sister, Stella, after her world starts to crumble. But her downward spiral brings her face-to-face with Stella’s husband, the sexy but brutal Stanley. As temperatures soar and passions rise, Blanche and Stanley battle for Stella’s soul.

Alan Ayckbourn's 77th play shows he has lost none of his theatrical inventiveness.

In 2017 Angie announced her retirement from performing. In this special evening she will be taking her audience back to where she started and saying thank you.

SUPPORT US The Lawrence Batley Theatre is the home of live performance for Huddersfield and Kirklees. For almost 20 years, community groups and other supporters campaigned for a professional theatre in Huddersfield and their efforts brought about the opening of the lbt in 1994.

Serving a population the size of a small city, lbt consistently confounds expectations.

Our accessible, high quality, diverse and socially relevant programme incorporates all artforms; and our work in the community celebrates and challenges people’s creativity and interests, irrespective of their background or circumstance. We continue to honour the story of a theatre demanded by the people of Kirklees who had the vision to know what a difference art makes.

After 23 years hard at work, our Grade II listed building is in need of maintenance, our auditorium needs renovating and our theatrical equipment needs replacing.

We want to begin a comprehensive renewal programme to see our theatre fit for the years to come.

Christmas is a special time of year as we remember others, celebrate with family and friends and partake in festive traditions. A trip to the theatre is one such treat, but for many children in Kirklees this isn’t a reality.

Award-winning poet and theatre maker Jackie Hagan’s way has been to make a new solo show that features the real voices of proper skint disabled people she knows. Jackie has conducted interviews with people from all over the country living on the fringes and the spaces in between. They are not sob stories, they are fully rounded lives full of the spiky humour and the complicated weirdness of being human. Jackie weaves these narratives together with poetry and anecdotes, celebrating the weird, the wonky, the unruly, and the resilient.
