Summer has arrived! This season we’re celebrating incredible local artists from right here in Yorkshire and bringing them to our stages.

We are incredibly proud to launch our new Associate Artists – Gary Clarke and Philip Stokes. These artists are creating brave and exciting new performance, testing boundaries of creativity and telling unheard stories with a distinctly Northern voice. Our Associate Artists have a genuinely collaborative relationship with the theatre, receiving support including space to develop new shows and the opportunity to showcase new work here.

Gary Clarke is the Artistic Director of the pioneering, award winning dance theatre company Gary Clarke Company, based in Barnsley. We are delighted to have their new show DETENTION with us this summer exploring the impact of SECTION 28, a piece of legislation which ‘prohibited the promotion of homosexuality’, it promises to be bold and moving. Leeds based writer Philip Stokes’ is recognised by the British Library as a Culturally Important Playwright of the 21st Century. We are excited to have the world premiere of Philip’s new play Brighton’84, a gripping new drama set in Brighton’s Grand Hotel on an infamous 1984 night in British political history – not to be missed!

As always, the summertime is an opportunity for us to take the theatre outside. Summer in the Courtyard is back bigger and better than ever this year with a fresh new line-up of live music, comedy, headline DJs, family fun and so much more all whilst basking in the sun (let’s hope it’s got it’s hat on!) We have the return of our Courtyard Comedy Festival, our Dinky Disco heads out into the open air and we have our own mini music festival Courtyard Live, Friday & Saturday nights of live music performed by local bands and artists that’s entirely free!

As the only professional theatre in Kirklees, we recognise the importance of celebrating the wealth of talent we have in the region. We’re here to provide opportunities to the abundance of amazing local artists we have here, which means we can share world class stories rooted in our communities on our stages for you to experience. As a registered charity (No. 510693) we can’t continue to do this without your support. So come see a show, dance the night away in our courtyard, cool off with an ice-cream. We hope you’ll join us for a summer of magic.
