If you know me...

you know my mantra, “You don’t need a lot of clothes; you just need the right clothes.”

Having too many clothes just increases your stress level – too many choices! But, in today’s caring for the planet mindset, my mantra takes on a far greater significance.

Making intelligent decisions about what to buy, how we care for our clothing*, and the life cycle of our purchases takes on moral significance.

• The throwaway culture continues to worsen. At present, many items are worn only seven to ten times before being tossed. That’s a decline of more than 35% in just 15 years.

• The average US consumer throws away 81.5 lbs of clothes every year. In America alone, an estimated 11.3 million tons of textile waste – equivalent to 85% of all textiles – end up in landfills on a yearly basis.

• Fast fashion brands are producing twice the amount of clothes today than in 2000 (H&M; Victoria’s Secret; Urban Outfitters; etc).

• One study estimated 15% of fabric used in garment manufacturing is wasted.

What can we do?

For starters, BUY ONLY WHAT YOU LOVE and WEAR WHAT YOU BUY.

Investment dressing is another phrase that is as relevant today as when it was coined eons ago (remember “Dress for Success”). Yes, some things might cost a bit more, but amortize the wearing of that leather jacket or cashmere sweater over its life cycle of 5-10 years.

Take excellent care of your clothes, shoes, handbags and jewelry to extend their life*. Fast fashion can account for an inordinate amount of waste because of inferior quality fabrics or less-than-stellar workmanship. Some garments just don’t hold up. Circular fashion continues to gain momentum: consignment shopping is on the rise, and our partnership with Divine Consign has become a significant part of many of our customers’ stewardship of their fashion dollars and their wardrobe (see page 3). Also, our buyers do their part, paying attention to the mission and efforts of vendors with whom we do business. Some designers at the forefront of sustainability efforts include AG Jeans, Essential Antwerp, Frame, French Connection, Johnny Was, MZ Wallace, Moussy Vintage, Rails, Sanctuary, Trina Turk, White + Warren, & Zadig & Voltaire.

In summary, the issue is complex, and the solutions even more complex.

We can all start by raising our awareness…articles on sustainability proliferate –take the time to educate yourself. And…BUY RESPONSIBLY!

How to care for jewelry? Soap and water go a long way especially with sterling silver!

Don’t hem your denim – cut your jean hem for a modern selvage edge. (LZ is the expert!)

Oh, and always wash your denim inside-out.

Those dust bags that come with your shoes and boots? It’s the end of boot season, so have your footwear polished and touched up for next year. Store in the dust bags.

• Hand wash cashmere.

MINDY ANSWERS BURNING QUESTIONS

Tips from the team Award-winning fashion

Mindy reports that not a day goes by without a customer querying her about denim trends. Mindy’s an expert, and she’s firmly in the camp of the right jean for your body type.

Rectangular:

Waistband above the hip; flare or wide leg.

Apple shape:

Mid-rise waistband; light-colored jean to accentuate your legs!

Hourglass:

Wider leg; bootcut; high rise skinny. Accentuate your slender waist! (No, skinny jeans are not “out”...a high rise makes it modern.)

She adds,

“For petite women, a straight leg jean paired with a classic white tee and an oversized blazer is a terrific look. Push up the sleeves to elongate the look!

With a fuller jean, tuck a tee or blouse and wear with a crop blazer. Fuller piece on the bottom? Balance the look with a more tailored and/or shorter top..

With a straight leg, wear a cardigan or something not too wide – again it balances the look and gives you a longer, leaner appearance.”

More from Mindy:

HOW TO MASTER THE FRENCH TUCK!

“First, fold the hem of your blouse or tee under, so you don’t have so much bulk in your jean – then tuck!

For a sweater, take about an inch on the side ( never in the middle) and tuck off to the side, above the belt loop. Even cuter? Unbutton most of your buttons and pull the sweater hem to the opposite side, you get a really cute twist without bulk.”

Ritika Does India Travelogue

“Many of you know Ritika as the designer of SILK ‘N MORE shawls and scarves. Ritika also heads up our shipping and receiving department.

Once a year, Ritika travels to India to see her family, visit the (family) factories, and collaborate on new designs.

Barely off the plane after her month-long sojourn, I asked Ritika if she would blog about her trip.” ~Faye

Such a looong trip: 24+ hours and sooooo many emotions. I get to see my parents, my sister, and extended family...priceless!

The moment I land, time slows down, and every minute seems precious.

Food is of paramount importance, and everyone asks what I would like to eat. My response is always, “As long as I’m not cooking – anything!”

Of course, I have my favorites: Mom’s cakes, omelettes for breakfast, and the abundance of street food that is special to my hometown, Amritsar.

There is no rush to get anywhere. There’s a term we use “Indian standard time,” could be 10:30 or so. Remember, I’m on vacation.

Every day starts with me waking up early (creature of habit). I enjoy tea with mom; breakfast comes later. This is the best time to talk – about nothing and everything. Chat about what my kids are doing. What’s new in my life. What is going on in the life of various cousins, etc.

Mid-morning is when I visit our showroom or factory for the scarves. Collaborating on new patterns and styles is a highlight.

Lunch is promptly at 1:30 pm. (Indian standard time doesn’t apply here.)

Afternoons include a short siesta for most people but not for this American. So I get caught up on emails. It’s after midnight in the US – the time stamp on my replies shocks everyone.

Evening is about tea time with at least 1 of my favorite snacks from town. Everything gets a good reheat – I don’t want to ruin my trip with an upset stomach. Then it’s time to stroll the backyard. The memories come flooding back: the sound of the local birds, the fragrance from the Eucalyptus trees towering over our home... everything has a distinct childhood memory.

Someone or other drops in to say “hello.” Of course – more snacks and tea or coffee or a drink (or 2)!!

Dinner is a quiet affair for mom and me, hanging out in front of the tv watching something we start over and over because we get chatting and forget the storyline.

And all too soon, my month in India is over, and I’m packing my bags to head home. The 24-hour return trip seems especially long. But still, I look forward to seeing the snow (NOT), and my family, and Oscar, my dog.

And then, the planning for my next visit can start...

Evolution vs Transition

Traditionally in fashion, we talk about “transitioning to a new season.” I see it more as an “evolution.” Evolution has the connotation of moving forward, changing for the better. These days we live with uncertainty and anxiety, but we’re getting better at navigating worrisome situations.

In other words, we evolve our normal as our situations evolve.

I always say, “Our clothes are the armor with which we face our daily battles.” BLAZERS are the perfect suit of armor for this moment in fashion history. Being comfortable reduces your anxiety, so pair with your joggers or a new pair of jeans.

Slip out of your house slippers and into a pair of fashion sneakers.

My point? A simple piece of clothing (you have several BLAZERS in your closet) can evolve your confidence and your wardrobe. Keep moving forward! -
